||Chapter 36: Caught In A Web||
Robert cleared his throat, handing Helen a cup and Tom,"So, what can we all do for you, Tom? Has there been a problem.", he nods,"A few actually. . . Not anything to do with noise but rather, concerns towards one of them.", he reached into the wheelchair, the small space to store things and pulled out a scythe.
"Otto; I believe this is yours."
"My scythe. . .?"
Otto stepped forward, taking it with a frown but a nod of gratitude,"But, why do you have it Sir?", Tom nods,"Because, the boy stole it and tossed it in my yard after breaking in here.", the room went silent.
Bonnie broke it first,"What?", Tom nods,"Quentin; He's been sneaking around, coming in here while you're out or distracted: He broke in once at night, but the ladder fell as did he.", Cornelius remembered Quentin didn't want to move for a whole week, and the broke ladder step.
Tom continued,"I'm not sure what he used the scythe for. . . But once he was done with it, he tossed it in my yard and I had my wife get it.", Helen nods and Tom continue turning to Robert,"And he's snuck into your workshop, you haven't been too sharp as you use to be but I don't blame you.", Robert gulped, Adelle took his hand.
Cornelius stood up, walking to the stairs and called up.
"Quentin! Downstairs now!"
~
Quentin came down, meet with the adults looking at him.
"You know what Tom and his wife told us?"
That's when he saw Otto's scythe back in his hands, gripping it tight and Robert looking at him.
"You want to tell us what Tom told us? Have you been coming in here and my workshop, stole from Otto and my keys?"
No wonder Adelle could never find them, they were with someone else the entire time!
Quentin looked at his ground, Cornelius and Bonne looked so horrified and he held out his hand.
"The keys. Now Quentin."
. . .
Quentin stuffed his hands into his pocket and pulled out two keys, putting them in his hands hand.
"Back up key for the Weather Station, and for basement."
Robert took them back,"Now. . . I could check the CCTV we installed.", Quentin's eyes widened,"But, something tells me I won't have too: Why did you do this?", Quentin gulped, everyone staring him down.
"Didn't you say Theodore's Dad was a psycho??"
Quentin spun around, Beatrix at the stairs,"That's why you were playing The Spy Game.", Bonne was taken it back as was Helen,"What?", "He's hiding something Dad, in the basement! He's got a secret door down there and Franklin is down there, he's not dead!", the room was so quiet, no one moved a muscle and all you could was the window and rain.
. . .
Then they all looked at Robert, who simply sat in silence and completely calm.
"Robert I-"
"No, no."
He stood, patting Cornelius's arm and shoulder,"I expected this to happen, with how I work; Adelle if you would. . .", she handed him some asprin, he took it and turned to Quentin with all too calm smile.
"I'll play."
He took put the backup keys on the fireplace, took the original key and unlocked the basement.
"You point out where the secret door is, Quentin."
. . .
What?
"Go on."
~
"How do you work down here??"
"Why not?"
Adelle sighed as she followed him down, Bonnie close behind and carrying Beatrix,"Tried to tell him but he refuses to move it.", Kyle peaked in, the workshop was very spacious if you could believe it ot not just a lot of clutter and equipment, he looked have been in the middle of work before being called up.
He waved hand around,"Now where is this secret door?", Quentin eyed him suspiciously,"Behind the bookshelf.", that was right behind Adelle and Bonnie, they back up as Robert rolled up his sleeves.
"Otto, mind giving me a hand: Make sure nothing falls."
Otto placed the scythe on the table, taking another end as Robert pulled the wardrobe aside.
. . .
Nothing.
"What?"
The door that was once there was gone, just a wall a spider crawling away with made Bonnie jump away.
"I'll. . . I'll get rid of the bugs."
Robert cleared his throat,"I guess in the dark it would look like a doorway, but I'm not sure where Franklin comes into this conversation.", it only then Quentin realised.
Why Robert didn't chase after him, why he never noticed; He did.
But he never did anything and just waited, knowing Tom was watching and knowing he could have at anytime told Cornelius but waited until that moment.
"Dad. . .?"
A small voice broke from above.
