The Rings of Power (maybe with Spoilers)
I just finidshed the first two episodes of "The Rings of Power" and I am more than impressed!
The first scene, when Galadriel summed up the first age! Did we really see the Feanoreans swearing their oath???? And is her brothe really Finrod Felagund???? AMAZING! Like... it was very summed up, but who cares?! We saw Valinor. And FELAGUND! And maybe the feanoreans!
Still: Gil-Galad (is he Gil-Galad?) looks so very weird. I had imagined him totally different...
Such as Celebrimbor. For me he has the appearance of a teenager who is light enough to get drunk after his first drink. Sorry for that!
But Elrond is depicted very well. He looks incredibly young, what he actually is, but still has wrinkles (propably because of his grief after the loosing his brother). I laughed so hard, when he and Celebrimbor marveled at Feanor's hammer. I mean... tecnically he is the grandfather of both of them...
But did I got the scene, when Elrond was introduced, right? Did they say he wasn't invited to this councilmeeting (or whatever) because only elvelords were invited!? HE IS THE SON OF F*CKING EARENDIL! Who's mother was Idril, daughter of Turgon, son of Fingolfin, son of goddamned FINWE! Besides, he was raised by Maglor, son of Feanor, son of Finwe! And (as mentioned) he is a direct descendant of Earendil. I'm pretty sure, more "elvelord" ISN'T POSSIBLE these days (yes, I am talking to you, Gil-Galad, son of an unknown person! I'm still convinced, Fingon adopted him. However, he wouldn't be the Noldor most closely releated to the fomer high king Fingon if he was Finrod's or Orodreth's son. Galadriel would be, so she should have been high queen of the elves. But if he really was Fingon's son, then the title is his by right. I'm drifting of topic, am I?)
Talking about "these days": I assumed, that this took place, shortly after the downfall of Numeor, but I'm pretty sure, the trailor showed Numenor at some point. So, I'm not really sure, where in the timeline it takes place (besides, I know as good as nothing about the second Age, so...) And I'm still waiting for Isildur to appear. I assumed, it was that guy on the boat and that the other people were numenorean refugees. But he said, he came from the south, so...
Plus, that Hobbit-volk (no idea, how they are called in english) is fantastic. I'm a Hobbit in heart anyway, so it's no surprise I like them. I read the theorie, that the man from the comet was Gandalf, which would make sence, according to the fact, that he cares alot about Hobbits in later days. But again, that would mean, Numenor had fallen allready (I suppose...). But maybe I'm focused on the canon events too much. As far as I can tell, it's quite far away from it.
In general I love the way everything is depicted, starting with the cotsumes and the many traditions that are introduced (like that dwarvish contest or that unarming before entering Valinor; that way of carving the death's faces into trees). Also, the difference in the phrasing of elves/men and Hobbits (I'll just call them Hobbits) is brilliant. And the actors are great (Elrond! Galadriel!). So are the landscapes and sets.
And, there were ents at some pint! THERE WERE ENTS!
Was I the only person to be reminded of Aegnor and Andreth by his darkskinned elve and the mortal woman? It's that sad. I'm prety sure, he'll die at some point. And why does her son have long hair? Is he hiding pointed ears?
Also, the scene with Durin (was this his name? I allready forgott it...) was hilarious! His children! There wasn't much of them to be seen, but they seemed to be very, very cute!
By the way, no wonder, that Elrond wouldn't visit him for like twenty years. He was probably buisy griefing for his brother. Also, you can't blame him for not wanting to be friend with one of the mortal race again. Remember: He won't meet them in Mandos again and at that point he had allready lost his brother that way. His TWIN BROTHER! (Don't worry. Mor are yet to come...)
But: What do the dwarfs hide? A silmarill? Probably not. But one disappeared in the earth (that's a kind way to describe it, I kow) which is exactly where the dwarfs are digging. But a Silmarill would change the plot alot. Yet, there were mentioned before and surely not only to please fangirls...
But anyhow, dwarves are uisng the curse "Aule's beard". THAT'S HILARIOUS!
The only aspect I don't really agree with is the hatered between elves and men. Did the elves forgett, that Earendil was half human? Don't they remember Hurin and Huor and Beren? (and Tuor). Haven't they seen, how some of Morgoth's humane servants were faithful to Maedhros (while they betrayed Caranthir, what definitely was only because of their wicked hearts and had nothing to do with their leader. Just by the way...)? They must know, there were both "good" and "bad" men!
And I'm affraid, that this will influence my imagination too much. That would be terrible. I'll have to try not to connect it with the written Silmarillion too much...
Just one other thing: I seriously can't understand people complaning about the diverse cast. I mean, it's great. I have imagined men to be both black- and whiteskinned, because both was described in the Silmarillion. For the Hobbits: They are very close to nature, so their skinns will be darker/browner anyway. I didn't really think about skincolours of dwarfs, but Durin's wife really seemed to fit in the setting. And that elve, who's name I didn't understand really is quite handsome. Personally, I am happy that at least some of those who have the power to influence people's minds (like movie-makers) are over the terrible concept of racism and try to fight it, even if risking to get hated. In my view, this is just the right way to take a stand against hate and racism and what other awfull things humans are coming up with!
Anyway: My favourite scene still is the one with Celebrimbor, Elrond and their grandfather's hammer. Imagine them gossiping about their uncles' problems with parenting...
You'll read from me (I startded making Silmarillion T-Shirts. Be excited...)
Alice 🙃
