Brooke quietly closed the door. The lights in the room were off, so Nattie was probably sleeping. As she took her hand off the doorknob, a lamp turned on behind her.

"I'm sorry, Nattie," She said, turning around. "Did I – "

"I'm not Nattie."

Brooke narrowed her eyes. "How did you get in here, Jace?"

He stood a few feet away from her, next to the bed closest to the door.

"Your friend let me in," Jace said, smirking. "When I told her I wanted to talk to you, she let me wait in here by myself. She went to go talk to... Brie and Nicole? I think she's staying with them tonight."

"Get out of here," She demanded.

"Is that any way to talk to your boyfriend?"

"Ex-boyfriend," Brooke corrected. "Now get the hell out of my room."

"Oh, Brooke."

"I am not afraid to punch you in the face," She warned.

"Now we both know that's not true," Jace said. "You'll try to punch me, and I'll grab your arm and bend it so far back that it pops out of place. We don't want that, do we?"

Brooke glared at him. "What do you want?"

"I just want to talk," He said.

"Then talk," She said. He didn't say anything. "Talk, or I'm leaving and getting a different room."

Jace sighed. "Don't you miss this?"

"What?"

"Being together."

"Absolutely not," She said.

Jace paused, taking in her appearance. "Were you on a date?"

"That's none of your business!" She snapped. "We're not dating anymore, Jace. I don't have to tell you anything."

Jace covered the distance between them in two long strides. He stood in front Brooke, looking down at her. She had backed up, and she was now against the door.

"Everything you do is my business," Jace said in a low voice. "I don't care if you don't love me anymore. You are mine, and I deserve to know what you're doing and who you're with. You can't get rid of me that easily, Brooke. You will always be mine."

"You're right," She said. "I don't love you anymore, which is exactly why it's none of your business who I'm with."

Jace didn't say anything at first. He looked down at her outfit.

"I bet he didn't tell you that you look fat in that dress," He said, and Brooke's eyes widened. "At least I had the courtesy to let you know, so you didn't go out in public looking like this."

"How fucking dare you," Brooke said. She hadn't said fucking in such a long time, that it even surprised herself. She could deal with him being possessive, but she wouldn't have him insulting her looks. She'd finally made peace with herself, and she wouldn't have him putting her down, causing even more damage to her self-esteem.

Jace chuckled. "Aw, is Brooke learning grown-up words?"

"You are a fucking asshole," She continued, and he raised an eyebrow. "I may have stayed with you for two years, but I sure as hell hope no other girl has to deal with you. You are the single worst person I have ever met. I don't love you, Jace. Okay? Get it through your – "

Jace punched the door, right next to her face, and she quickly stopped talking. She felt all the confidence she'd just had drain out of her.

"You will not talk to me like that, you little bitch," He said, frowning. He grabbed her tightly by the arm, and threw her on the ground. "Bet you didn't like that, huh? How do you think I felt when you told me you didn't love me anymore?"

Brooke tried to sit back up, but he kicked her back down.

"Do you know how much you hurt me, Brooke?" He asked. He bent down and grabbed her hair, yanking her up so she was level with him. "I love you so much, Brooke. I thought you loved me, too, and that we were just going on a little break, but then you went and got that restraining order. How could you do that, Brooke? How could you – "

Someone knocked on the door. Jace frowned, and Brooke's eyes widened. He let go of her hair and shoved her to the ground.

"Answer the door," He said. "But don't tell anyone I'm in here."

Brooke got up as quickly as she could. She glanced in the mirror before answering the door. Her hair was a mess, and she had a bruise on her shoulder from where Jace kicked her.

She took a deep breath before answering.

It was Zack.

He smiled. "Hey, you left your phone in my car." He held it out to her, and she took it.

She gave him a small smile. "Thanks."

Zack's smile quickly turned to a frown. "Is everything okay?"

She shrugged, but quickly winced at the pain in her shoulder.

He lowered his voice. "Is Jace here?"

"No," She said, softly. She looked behind her, and saw the bathroom door was closed. She looked back to Zack, who was staring at her, worried. She silently nodded.

Zack walked into the room, and Brooke made it a point to shut the door loud enough for Jace to hear. Zack stood next to the bathroom, and when Jace opened the door, he didn't even notice him.

Jace was frowning. "Who was that?"

"That would be me."

Jace turned around and saw Zack, who was leaning against the wall. He walked up to him.

"Did you touch Brooke?" He asked.

"No," Jace said, putting his hands in the air in defense.

"Really? You're going to lie?" Zack asked. Jace just scowled. "Get the hell out of Brooke's room. If I find out you're near her again, I won't be letting you leave the room in one piece."

Jace rolled his eyes, and looked at Brooke. "What do you see in him?"

"Leave, Jace," Brooke said, softly.

Jace turned around, opened the door and left, slamming it shut behind him.

Zack looked at her. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I think so," She said, shrugging. She winced again. She should really stop shrugging.

Zack frowned, walking over to her. He moved her hair off of her shoulder, and saw where Jace kicked her.

"Are you sure?"

"It's just a bruise," Brooke said. She sighed. "I'll be fine, I promise."

"Okay," He said. She said she was fine, so he'd believe her for now. "Tell me if he comes near you again."

She nodded. "Zack?"

"Yeah?"

"Thank you," She said, wrapping her arms around him. Her face was in his chest, and he wrapped her arms around her. "Thank you so much."

It was silent for a few seconds, but when Zack heard a noise, he realized she was crying. He ran his hand through her hair.

"Are you sure you're okay?" He asked, softly.

"Yeah," She said, getting out of his grasp. She began rubbing her eyes, wiping away the tears. "Sorry. Yeah, I'm good. I'll be okay."

"Are you – "

"I promise I'm fine," She said, laughing. "Can I ask you a favor?"

"Sure."

"Jace is probably waiting for you to leave," She said. "Down the hall somewhere, probably. Could you stay in here tonight? Nattie's not coming back, so you can have her bed."

"Absolutely."

"Thank you."

"You don't have to keep thanking me, Brooke." He laughed.

"I'm just really grateful," She said, laughing herself. "I tend to thank people a lot."

"I think I'll get used to it, eventually," He said.

"Well, um..." She said. "I'm going to wash my makeup off; it probably looks terrible now. And then, I'll go to sleep. You don't have to go to sleep or anything. Don't feel like you have to do anything."

"Don't worry," Zack said. "I'll figure something out. Now go wash your makeup off. You look like a raccoon."

Brooke laughed. "I'm sorry!" She turned around to walk to the bathroom.

"You apologize a lot, too," He pointed out.

"I'm sorry."

He just laughed.
