Exchanging Body Heat
"Okay, how about yellow?" I ask, holding my phone closer to Alex to show him a yellow flower arrangement.
"You're joking," he scoffed. "That looks horrible."
"Yeah, it does," I agree, "but you've already turned down red, blue, and purple."
"Oh so yellow is obviously the next in line?" Alex laughed. I rolled my eyes playfully.
"Duh," I laugh. "So any other suggestions?"
"Yeah, let's hire a professional wedding planner."
"Nah, mate," I smiled at him. "There's no need for that. We aren't having a big celebration, we can do this ourselves."
"You say us, but you really mean you, because I'm sh*t at this apparently."
"That isn't true. You're giving me some awesome moral support," I said sweetly.
"Thanks, babe. I feel so needed," he chuckled.
"You are," I leaned over and kissed his cheek. "Come on, we've done enough planning for today. Let's go watch a movie."
The two of us stood from the dining table and made our way over to the couch.
"Pitch Perfect?" I asked as we sat down.
"Oh, f**k off," he huffed. I laughed and leaned my head onto him as he wrapped his arm around me.
"Tell you what: you sing me a song and I'll let you pick the movie," I smirked, looking up at him. He looked down at me and laughed. "And no, you can't use my butt as bongos."
"D*mn," he swore, laughing. "Alright, what song?"
"Warden," I said.
"I'd rather not," he shrugged.
"Shady Grove?"
"You just want me to sing a song I've covered in The Tin Box Boys, don't you?" he asked, giving me a flat look.
"Yep," I nodded. "So go on then, sing me some Warden, babe."
"Alright," he sighed, readjusting himself. I sat up so that I was no longer leaning on him. He cleared his throat and began to sing one of my favorite songs from his old bluegrass days.
"That was beautiful," I smiled after he finished his song. "I cri evrytiem."
"I'm not that good, Len," Alex chuckled. "I mean-"
"Sh," I shushed, placing my pointer finger on his lips. "Say no more, my angel of music."
"Wha-"
"Sh sh sh," I shushed again, my finger still holding its place on his lips. "You're my Beyonce."
"Why you do dis?" he asked. I chuckled and pulled my hand away.
"'Cause I love you," I said in a singsong voice.
"Stop being so cute," he glared at me.
"Never," I said, shaking my head and giving him a glare of my own.
"I'm warning you," he threatened. "Stop being so adorable or pay the price."
"No, Javert, never," I said, mentally laughing at my own reference. I leaned closer to him in attempt to be threatening.
"That's it," he said. Suddenly, he shot forward and began to tickle me mercilessly.
"No!" I screeched in between laughs. "Not cool!"
"I beg to differ," he laughed, continuing the torturous action. I wriggled desperately, attempting to escape. My attempts weren't in vain as I fell to the floor. While it wasn't the most ideal solution, I at least freed myself.
"Ha!" I said with pride, sitting up from my position on the floor. "I've escaped your dastardly clutches!"
"That's what you think," he scoffed, joining me on the floor.
"Not again!" I squealed as he attempted to trap me. I was too quick and rolled away from him. He ended up in the perfect position for me to turn the tables on him. I sat on his lower stomach, either of my knees on either side of his waist. Admittedly, this was a rather compromising position and if someone were to walk in, they'd probably get the wrong idea. But whatever.
"Well would you look at that," he said nonchalantly, "you've got me."
"You bet your British butt I've got you," I smirked. "I'm the real MVP."
"Sure thing, Len," he chuckled. "Now get off."
"Nope," I said, crossing my arms over my chest. "You're trapped."
"Fine by me. I quite like this position," he smirked, wriggling his eyebrows seductively. I rolled my eyes.
"Go ahead and be sexual but I'm still not moving," I shrugged. "I'm too stubborn."
"I could easily push you off, ya know that right?" he questioned, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Well, yeah you can but you won't."
"And why is that?"
"Because," I said seductively, leaning forward and placing my hands on his chest, "you said it yourself- you like this position."
"What the f**k," a voice rang out, breaking the would-be amorous interaction. Thank goodness for that, too. I hardly realized what I was doing.
I quickly stood up, my face burning red in embarrassment. I looked over to see Lucy standing there looking absolutely horrified.
"Oh hey Lucy," I said, my voice small. "Didn't, uh, see you there."
"Bet you didn't," she scoffed. "D*mn."
"I-I... don't know what to say," I said, looking down at Alex. He was still on the floor, laughing like a madman.
"You don't have to say anything," Lucy shrugged. Her expression suddenly became troubled. "But I do."
"What's wrong?" I asked, thankful for the subject change. Alex finally stood from the floor. He was still laughing and had tears in his eyes.
"Well, um," she stammered. She sat on the couch and looked to Alex. "Smith, can I talk to my sister alone?"
"Uh, sure," he nodded, wiping tears from his eyes. I gave him a flat look. Why was that so funny to him?
"Actually, no," Lucy said with a shake of her head. "You can stay, Smith. But please promise me you won't tell anyone what I'm about to say."
"Promise," he said as he and I sat on the couch, me in between the two.
"Okay," she breathed out, tears welling up in her eyes.
"What's wrong, Luce? You're scaring me," I asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"I might be pregnant," she cried. She put her head down and continued crying.
I was shocked, completely and honestly shocked. I wrapped my arm around her shoulders to try and comfort her.
"Is it Ross'?" was the only thing I managed to say.
"Of course it's his," she spat, "who do you think I am?"
"Sorry," I shrank back.
"Does he know?" Alex asked. Lucy shook her head, wiping tears from her eyes.
"No. I don't really even know."
"What do you mean?" Alex asked.
"Well, I haven't really been able to get a test. I don't want anyone to know unless it's for sure."
I nodded and looked over to Alex, "Would you to take us to get one?"
"I don't want to get one," Lucy shook her head repeatedly.
"Why not?"
"Because I'm scared," she whimpered. I leaned my head against hers and sighed.
"Don't be," I comforted. "I'll be with you the whole time."
"No," she said again, her voice breaking. I sighed and looked over at Alex, silently pleading. He nodded and stood up. "Where's he going?"
"To get a test," I said quietly. Lucy pulled away from me.
"No no no," she said, shaking her head repeatedly.
"Ignoring it isn't going to make it go away, Lucy," I soothed. "You'll have to take a test."
She silently nodded. I heard the front door open and close. Lucy leaned her head on my shoulder and I leaned my head on hers.
"It's gonna be okay, Luce," I whispered.
"I know," she whispered back.
It didn't take Alex long to get back. He walked into the living room and held the box out to Lucy. She let out a sigh, grabbed it, and made her way into the bathroom.
I stood up and wrapped my arms around Alex, a gesture he returned.
"Is she okay?" he asked.
"She will be," I sighed. "I know it... she knows it. How do you think Ross will react if she is?"
"I don't know," he said, hugging me closer. "I've known him for a long time but I can't predict how this'll affect him."
"I think he'll be okay with it," I said.
"You do? Why's that?"
"I don't really know... I think I'm just hoping he will."
"You and me both..."
"Lena!" came Lucy's voice from the bathroom. "Lena! Lena, come here!"
I pulled myself from Alex and jogged down to the bathroom. I pushed the door open to see Lucy on the floor, her head in her hands.
"Lucy?" I asked apprehensively.
"Positive," she mumbled so quiet that I wasn't entirely sure I heard her.
"What?"
"It's positive," she repeated, looking up to face me. "He's gonna hate me."
"You don't know that," I said, sitting in front of her.
"Yes I do," she nodded. "Why wouldn't he?"
"Because it isn't your fault," Alex said from the doorway. "If anyone's to blame, it's him."
"I've got to tell him, haven't I?" she sighed.
"Afraid so," Alex said. "Would you like me to ask him to come over?"
Lucy nodded slowly and Alex left the room.
"Come on," I said, standing up and holding my hand out to her, "let's get you cleaned up."
"Wouldn't want to face the baby daddy lookin' like a raccoon, now would we?" she said dryly, taking my hand.
"That's actually true," I said as I helped her up. "Now, let's take a closer look at that snout."
She laughed lightly and started wipe her face with a makeup wipe. After she wiped her face off, we went into the living room.
"Just think, Lucy, you've got a little Ross inside you right now," I said trying to add a bit of humor into the serious situation.
"Wouldn't be the first time!" Alex said through gritted teeth. Lucy gave him a disapproving look, but she didn't hold it for long before she started laughing.
Not too long after Alex called Ross, he was in our apartment. He didn't really know what was going and he didn't seem all too concerned. I guess he thought we just wanted to hang out. Little did he know...
I sat next Lucy and Ross was beside her. Alex sat on the armchair next to the couch.
"So, Ross, I bet you were wondering why we've called you here today," Alex said, leaning into his seat.
"Well, a bit, yeah," Ross shrugged.
"Well-"
"I'm pregnant," Lucy said, interrupting what was probably going to be a joke from Alex.
Ross turned to her, his eyes wide and his jaw to the floor.
"You-you're what?" Ross stammered.
"I'm pregnant," she repeated. Alex and I shared a look, silently agreeing to stay quiet and let them talk by themselves.
"No, I heard you," Ross shook his head. "I just don't believe it."
"I'm sorry, Ross," Lucy whispered, hanging her head. "You must hate me."
"Hate you?" he repeated shaking his head. "I could never hate you, Lucy. This isn't your fault. This something we'll both have to deal with together. I love you."
Lucy's head shot up and she looked to the tall man.
"Really?"
"Absolutely."
The two then proceeded to kiss.
"Really? Y'all gonna go straight back to exchanging body heat after that shocking revelation?" I said sarcastically.
"Well, after what I walked in on an hour ago, I don't think you have much room to talk," Lucy said, giving me a smug look.
"Whoa, what did you walk in on?" Ross questioned, clearly very amused.
"Never you mind," Alex dismissed.
"I want to know," Ross whined.
"Too bad," I teased, sticking my tongue out at him.
"Come on, Ross," Lucy stood up, "we have a lot to talk about."
Ross nodded and held his hand out for her. The two walked out, leaving me and Alex alone once more. I held my arms out to Alex and frowned.
"Come to me, my angel of music, and let us cuddle," I said in a singsong voice. Alex chuckled and sat beside me. I lay my head in his lap and pulled a throw blanket over myself. He began to absentmindedly play with my hair.
"What if it were us?" I asked, halfway to drifting off to sleep.
"One day it will be," he said soothingly, continuing to stroke my hair. "But we'll be in a better place for it."
"One day it will be us," I repeated with a yawn.
