Thirty-Five: Where Arth Thou, Robin Hood?
"Okay, long story short, an old friend is trapped in a castle guarded by an actual dragon during the 1400's, I need your help." River suddenly appeared next to me in my room, via vortex manipulator.
I jumped, just finishing off tying the laces of my boots. Turning to face the curly blonde woman, I placed my hands on my hips.
"Odin's name River, give me a warning next time." I breathed out, heart racing from the scare she gave me.
River Song didn't answer her eyes simply wandering over the engagement ring resting on my finger. She smirked, grabbing my hand to get a better look at the ring.
"Holy crap, the Doctor's not cheap, I'll tell you that. What is that? Gallifreyan markings? This thing must've cost him a fortune!" River exclaimed, causing me to blush.
"It was his, um, mother's ring." I coughed out, River's eyes going huge at the information.
"Wow, he actually gave you something like that, shows how much he really loves you." My face went even hotter at that, myself praying that the Doctor, Amy, and Rory who were all waiting for me in the console room didn't decide to come barging in.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, already heard enough about it from Amy." I waved it off, shaking my head. "Gosh, you and Amy are so alike sometimes it's insane." River giggled at my words as if it were the funniest thing she'd heard.
"Oh..." She shook her head, hair bouncing. "You have no idea." I watched her curiously, seeing a soft look in her eyes. However, that was wiped away in an instant, River slapping her thighs as she stood up. "Enough of that, I need your help rescuing my friend, let's go." I shrugged standing next to her.
I felt guilty since my fiancé, Amy, and Rory were all waiting for me in the console room to go on an adventure. But I'd figure it had been quite a while since River and I went on one, besides she could have me here not even two seconds after we were gone.
"Okay, let's go." River grinned, grabbing my hand as she quickly typed in coordinates on her vortex manipulator.
With a push of a button bright white surrounded us, engulfing my vision to nothing but chaos. Barely a second had passed when it ended, River and I no longer standing in my room, but now in some field of sunflowers.
My eyebrows furrowed, my body turning on its own accord seeing nothing but what looks like a forest around us. Except for the forest didn't look like any average Earth forest, no, this one was quite literally gleaming. Practically sparkling.
Tilting my head, I looked at the beautiful forest in apprehension. "Ah," River took a sharp intake of breath, breathing out with a small smile. "The Enchanted Forest, lovely place to be." I followed River, the two of us trekking through the sunflowers and into the forest.
"Enchanted Forest?" I rose a brow of disbelief, River looking to me with a small smile.
"Yes," She drawled, looking around with wonder. "The Enchanted Forest is a magical place as some may call it, the leaves never fall, nor does it snow, and it's always Spring." River explained as we made our way through the glittery forest.
The trees were greener and taller than I've ever seen, animals wandered about not scared of people, birds sang songs, and the river could be heard running all throughout. Even the smell seemed to entice you, make it so you never wanted to leave. The forest looked to be a place of serenity, like nothing violent ever happened here.
"Where do you think the fairytales emerge from? People of Earth believe Norse tales as nothing but myths, and yet you still exist. It is the same for many stories of Earth, many legends are true. In this forest, the magic came from unicorns. Unfortunately, unicorns went extinct sometime in the early 1500's, that's why in modern times this forest is no longer magical. The last of the unicorns are now living within the forest's very heart, but soon, they will die out and with them, the magic." River explained sadly, my heart dropping at the story.
How horrible.
I gazed around the forest, jumping when I saw some sort of small glittery creature flying about. River saw this as well, watching with soft eyes as extremely small naked humans flew about, wings connected to their back. Many were female, a few being male, each with identical pointed elf ears and large forest green eyes.
They giggled, playing around with each other, fairy dust sprinkling from them as they flew. I had never seen such a sight in my life, the way the sun was just in the right position over the forest to burst with fiery yellow, engulfing the entire place in its comforting warmth.
To the river on our left, women with huge shimmery tails splashed about the bay. Mermaids. Faires. Unicorns. The forest had it all, you could practically feel the magic humming with life.
"I've never seen anything like it," I admitted, holding my arms out watching as glowing butterflies fluttered around, resting on my arms.
I almost felt dressed inappropriately, almost like I should be dressed up in some flowy dress. River held up a finger, watching as a delicate butterfly landed upon her.
"Yes, I truly do love this time period." River explained, the two of us continuing in our trek through the forest.
Stags with antlers made of tree branches sprinted past us. I wondered who River's friend was, who did River know that lived in such an amazing place.
Unable to stop myself, I turned to her eagerly. "Is your friend close by here?" River shook her head, my own head tilting when a small stone cottage with smoke rising from the chimney came into view.
"No, we need to make a quick pit stop so I can get directions to exactly what castle he's trapped in." I paused at that, following River forward.
He?
The two of us came upon the lovely stone cottage, River wasting no time in throwing the door open, bursting inside. A yelp escaped me at River's brash move, following her into the cottage.
My throat clenched at the huge cauldron sitting on top of a green fire at the center of the small cottage. Wooden carvings were marked all along the walls and floors in a language I couldn't decipher.
Shelves of old looking bound books and scribes lined the walls, ingredients of different things open on tables around the room. River wasn't fazed by this instead opting to look around as if looking for something.
"WITCH!" She boomed, causing me to jump with wide eyes. "WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!" My world stood still, my mouth falling open as I flatly gaped at River Song's words.
Almost immediately after River's scream, a short old woman came hobbling out of a random room looking pissed off. "Plague on you and everyone you care about, River Song! How dare you barge into my home making demands of me after years? What is it you want this time?" The old woman was dressed in stringy rags of clothing, using a walking stick to get around.
River Song crossed her arms, myself awkwardly standing behind her unsure of what was going on. "I would like to know exactly which castle it is my husband is trapped in." River smoothly said, the witch ignoring her, her gaze landing on me before lighting up.
"A sorceress?" She looked between River and I questioningly, motioning to me.
I rose a brow, River shaking her head. "No, try Norse Goddess."
The witch choked on her breath eagerly nodding her head. "Okay, River Song, I will tell you where your husband is trapped on one condition..." She paused for dramatic effect, River and I looking at her waiting for an answer. "I want three stands of her hair." The woman smirked, looking to me. "Hair of a Goddess, extremely potent in potion making. What are you the Goddess of exactly?" I stepped forward, pursing my lips.
"Persephone; the Goddess of Fire," I stated, causing the witch's eyes to brighten immensely as she did a small jig.
"Yes, a powerful Goddess! Three strands of her hair for information on your husband's whereabouts." The witch bargained, River looking at me for permission to agree.
It was only three strands, what was the worst that could happen?
"Sure," I shrugged, plucking three single strands of died inky black tufts out. "Here you go." I handed them to her, the witch greedily snatching them from my grasp counting for herself.
Accepting that it was, in fact, three strands, she turned opening a small vial placing them inside. We watched silently as she labeled the vial, 'Hair from the Lady of Fire.' River scowled impatiently when the witch didn't say anything.
"Excuse me, we held up our end of the bargain, now you hold up yours. Where's my husband?" River hissed, causing the witch to turn to us holding up her wooden staff.
"Of course," The old woman closed her eyes, reopening them a second later revealing nothing but milky white irises that definitely weren't there before. "Listen well, for this is one and only time it shall be said. Robin Hood can be found in the castle of Merrywood, trapped on the highest room of the tallest tower. But don't be so foolish as to think thy may rescue him, for this castle is guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. Robin Hood was sentenced to life in the castle by the king for his crimes of stealing from the royal vault. Any who attempt to free him shall become thine enemy thy king." The witch's voice echoed around eerily, milky gaze boring straight into River Song.
The milky gaze boring into our forms for a minute more before her eyes snapped back to brown, the old lady bringing down her cane. She waved us away, with a scowl clutching the vial of hair to her.
"I've held my end of the bargain," I had just now taken the time to notice the witch held an Irish accent. "Now leave." She ordered and before either of us could say anything more, the cottage door flew open, River and I being sucked from the cottage.
I screamed as the both of us landed feet from the cottage on our backs. Squinting my eyes open, my mouth came out harsh as the cottage began disappearing before my very eyes.
"River!" I squeaked, flying to my feet, River doing the same.
River cussed as the cottage was finally gone, me unable to understand what had just happened.
"What happened!" I yelled in confusion, River shaking her head. "It just disappeared!"
"Damn witches, always leaving once they get what they want." She mumbled, grabbing my hand and leading me through the Enchanted Forest once more.
I was still in shock, allowing her to lead me through the forest, seemingly knowing exactly where she was going. At that moment it finally hit me, River Song was married.
"Hold up," I forced her to stop, shaking my head, trying to wrap my mind around this. "You're married, you are actually properly married, and I wasn't invited to your wedding!" I raged, throwing my hands up, River cringing slightly. "Explain, right now," I demanded, River sighing, putting her hands on my shoulders.
"Okay," She agreed, biting her lip before explaining. "For me, it's been about five years, but five years ago I met a huntsman who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Robin Hood's his name, he's well... not completely human. A demi-god, in fact, which makes his lifeline quite a bit longer than the average human. We met when he tried to steal from me, and well... long story short, it was in my opinion love at first sight."
"Of course, we eloped sometime in the 1300's. He and I traveled a bit before we came back to his time for him to visit with his brother. I left for a bit, got thrown in prison and haven't seen him since." She looked sad like she hasn't seen him in a long time sort of sad. "It wasn't until recently, I got word of my husband being captured and imprisoned in this castle. Of course, I'll bend the heavens to get my husband back." I hugged River when she was done, taking her by surprise.
After a few seconds, she hugged back. "I swear, I will help you get your husband back," I promised River Song making her nod happily in reply.
"Thank you," She sincerely told me.
Walking next to her, I let my gaze wander over the amazing Enchanted Forest. Fairies and butterflies seemed to fly all over the place, it wasn't until we continued walking that I realized the fairies and butterflies stopped flying in this area.
In fact, there were no creatures over here at all, it looked like a normal forest. The smell of Brimstone hit my nostrils, it was odd. When I looked ahead of me, I could see an empty field that seemed to stretch for miles, but it was oddly blurry. Before I could ask River if we were close the both of us seemed to hit an invisible force.
The force shifted as we walked through it, a huge castle which wasn't in sight before suddenly towering over of us. The castle was surrounded by a lake of lava, the only way to get across is a rickety looking stone bridge.
The castle was surrounded by some sort of perception spell that kept onlookers from seeing it when you were far away. However, when you got close enough alike to River and me, the castle revealed itself. Looking around at the stone castle which reminded me of a much smaller version of the castle I once resided in, I stayed alert for the dragon.
Turning to River, I shrugged. "I don't see the dragon." She nodded in agreeance, the two of us slyly making our way over the bridge, myself praying it wouldn't collapse.
"We made it over the bridge without dying, now where is the dragon..." I vaguely heard River mumbling, myself stuck on the fact that dead center in the next room over huge eyes were closed.
Panicking, I spun around slapping my hand over River's mouth hearing her protest. However, I only pointed to the sleeping dragon, River's face paling. Slowly, the two of us made our way toward the stairs, knowing the best way to get to her husband was this way.
It was like slow-motion when River tripped and fell down, herself landing harshly on the stone steps causing for the smack to practically scream. I held my breath, turning my head only to see the dragon's eyes open and pointedly glaring us.
"AHHH!" I screamed, the dragon letting out a loud roar as it woke up.
River clicked a few buttons on her vortex manipulator in panic. "We need back up and a better means of escape, I'm getting the TARDIS and the Doctor. I'll be back in two minutes." River suddenly disappeared on the spot making me sigh when I saw the dragon approaching me dangerously.
"Shit." I cussed, using my powers for the first time in a few weeks, levitating myself to fly up the stairs.
I heard the dragon's rageful roar from behind, as I flew up the stairs, remembering the witch told us Robin Hood was in the highest room in the tallest tower. Screaming the entire way up, I made it a point not to look behind me scared that the dragon was breaking the tower to get to me.
It wasn't until I finally got to the highest door, that I knew what I had to do. Without a care for the property, I flew straight into the door breaking it down and crashing to the solid stone floor.
Everything hurts.
A loud groan left my mouth as I stood up. Glancing around the room, I sighed seeing as it looked like any old room from the 1400's. Cobblestone walls, a fireplace, books. Nothing too special about it, well, it would be nothing too special if you overlooked the man standing at the window with a chain on his ankle.
The chain was cuffed to his leg, keeping him bound by the wall. Luckily, it looked to be long enough to allow him space to move around the room, but it wasn't long enough to release him from the room.
Also, this man was... staring right at me! Bronze sun-kissed skin, with deep brown eyes and equally as brown hair. He had a semi-long beard which was braided in two, a bushy mustache, and long messy hair braided in some areas.
It looked like he had been trapped without any means of escape for a while, though I will admit, this man looked more like a pirate if anything. Despite his rough appearance, the man was good-looking in his own way, alike to Doctor in that aspect.
Yes, he wasn't the norm attractive, but he was good-looking. The man furrowed his brows, forehead crinkling in confusion. The chains around his ankles rattled as he moved, the man's eyes widening as he gazed at me.
"Persephone?" His voice held the slightest British accent but was concealed through a rough deep scratchy tone.
My mouth dropped, I had never seen this man before, how did he know me? As if sensing my confusion, the man stepped forward pointing to himself. "Persephone, it's me, Robin Hood!" He exclaimed, my mouth falling open.
So this was River's husband, this was Robin Hood.
