Chapter 9: Run
Sixty feet and three rows in, it was there. Rasputin unholy mausoleum. A miniature black marble castle. Who knows what sort of evil lurked down below. John grabs a crowbar and pries open the ancient steel door. Everyone moves away for Hellboy to go in first with Ivan still strapped to his back.
"Ivan says, 'There's a whole network of tunnels down here. Goes on for miles." He says.
Two agents stand guard in the mausoleum, while the group descends carefully. The walls are dotted with yellowed skulls. John's flashlight flickers until he shakes it back to life.
"Stay close, everybody." Hellboy says, he looks over his shoulder, "Babe, you okay?" He asks.
"Yeah. Uh...no." She frowns as everyone turns to look at her. "I don't know. It's..." She tilts her head to the side, "It's weird. I'm getting a lot of...noises." She taps the side of her head, " And feelings. It's hard to explain." Her heart drops as a dark, eerily feeling fills her heart. "There's so much evil here. It's suffocating."
Hellboy frowns, worried for his kitten. But they must go on. They get back on their path and head down a staircase. As they reached the bottom, they come across an intersection. Three corridors branch off in different directions.
"You better be right about this." Manning says.
They walk into the corridor, scanning all around as they look down the three paths. Figuring out where to go next. With Ivan, their only guide, they cannot afford to get lost.
"We'll be all right, as long as we don't separate."
Suddenly, a loud TCHKANGGG erupts with loud rumbling. Large spiked metal plates shoot up from below, blocking both their way out, demolishing the staircase.
"Hellboy!" Kat screams, till her voice is cut off by the metal walls.
Wicked spikes cover the metal surface. Hellboy still bangs on it, but to no avail: it's at least six inches thick. Kat and John are on the other side. Kat's eyes light up as she struggles to bring the walls down. She grunts and grits her teeth as she calls forth her powers, but the walls were too heavy for her. She cries out in pain as it sends her to her knees. John rushes and catches her, helping her stand.
"They're too heavy." She pants.
With the team separated in three groups, this complicated things for them all.
"Hey, Sparky?" Hellboy clicks on his radio.
"I'm here, Red." Kat answer hers.
"Okay, someone's expecting us. Tell everyone to turn on your locator belts on. Anyone sees anything..." Hellboy says.
"I'll say 'Marco'." She agrees.
"'Polo'." Hellboy answers.
"Are you sure about this?" John asks from behind, into his own com.
"On a scale of one to ten: two. But, don't worry, Boy Scout, she'll take care of you. She's a tough one." Hellboy grins, meaning Kat.
Kat sighs, giving John a small smile, and turns to talk into her com again, "Be careful, Red." She says softly.
Hellboy sighs, "You, too, Babe."
Both of them grew worried for each other, it was very rare for them to be separated during missions. Each of them just as dangerous and they managed to get through them all, but something told Kat this was going to be different for them. And that scared her. Kat and John move on down their path as Hellboy shines his light down the tunnel in front of him, Manning, and Agent Lime. Hellboy led them both along with Ivan still on his back.
Hellboy and Manning come into a vast chamber: Slavic motifs crown the rugged stone pillars and archways. Water runs down the walls. Across a small stone bridge, light pours from a hexagonal structure.
"Ask your buddy how far this thing goes." Manning says.
Hellboy moves to the side and leans on the rail to look down....waaay down. It must have been over 100 feet, maybe more, Hellboy couldn't tell. It was so dark, he couldn't see the ground. He leans back and lets go of the rail. The rotten steel breaks off and falls through the darkness. It clatters loudly as it bounces off the walls and finally hits the bottom with a loud thud.
Ivan gurgles behind Hellboy, "How you doing up there, Ivan?" He asks.
"If I had legs, I'd kick your ass!" Ivan gurgles out in Russian.
Hellboy sighs exasperatedly and turns towards Agent Lime, "Would you mind holdin' this guy for a while?" He asks as he gives Ivan to him, making him carry the corpse from now on. "He's so negative." He scoffs.
Suddenly, gears above them begin to turn, cranking loudly like a warning siren. At the same time, a steel door drops from above, trapping them on the bridge and forcing the to forge ahead.
Manning rushes to stop it, but it was too late and the door was way too heavy for either of them to lift.
"Hey. Hey!" He pounds against the door, "Hey! Hey!" He shouts.
This was not good. They all jump at the loud sound of rumbling building around them. It kept growing louder. Hellboy scans the entire area for the source.
"What the hell is that?" Manning exclaims.
Hellboy takes a few steps forward and manages to see with the faint light a trail of gears way down below them. They all begin to start up and crank.
"Somethin' big." Hellboy says and looks over his shoulder briefly, "Lime, come with me."
Lime nods, "Right.
"No, no, no, no, no." Manning stops him and storms up to Hellboy, "Stay put!" But Hellboy didn't listen, "Stop!" Manning shouts, his voice echoing against the walls. "You listen to me. Listen to me!" He demands and watches Hellboy stop and turn to him. "I'm in charge. We're gonna go back. You can take that door apart."
"Whatever it is, it's comin' for us. Now, we got to move forward." Hellboy states, strongly urging them all to move. "Lime, let's go!"
Manning snaps toward Lime, "Stay...put!" He shouts.
Lime didn't know what to do, so he stayed still. Waiting for them both to agree on something. Ivan gurgles and mutters in Russian.
Manning turns towards Hellboy with a warning finger, "And you! I am not afraid of you. I'm in charge! We go back...!"
Just as he finishes that sentence, a gigantic metal pendulum swings past and demolishes one third of bridge a few feet from their feet. It takes Lime and Ivan with it.
Lime screams as he falls to his death, Ivan shouts out from the darkness, "I WAS BETTER OFF DEAD!!!"
Hellboy and Manning both look down, Manning places his hand on Hellboy's chest, gently pushing him away for safety. Hellboy frowns and looks at his hand, but suddenly, at the end of the bridge, another door shudders as it begins to close. He grabs Manning quickly and throws him till he slides across the floor and into the other room. Whoosh! The pendulum swings back. It destroys more of the bridge and Hellboy jumps out of the way just in time. But it swings back and hits the bridge again, destroying the rest just mer inches away from Hellboy. Suddenly, chunks of stone disintegrate under feet. He sways and struggles to steady himself. He takes off running as the pendulum swings once more to take out the final piece of the bridge just as Hellboy rolls under the door and makes it into the hexagonal building. But his tail was still out there. He curls it just in time before it could crush it.

Hellboy and Manning find themselves in a very narrow, arched stone corridor. Its walls are lined with endless rows of rusty steel blades. Faint traces of Wagner can be heard.
Manning frowns as they both get to their feet, "Music." He says.
"Shh." Hellboy shushes him and grabs his gun.
They cautiously proceed...and not that far from them, there in yellow gaslight, Kroenen nods attentively as a phonograph plays the love duet from Tristan Und Isolde. Above him, ropes, hooks and pulleys. Hellboy eyes Kroenen as anger fills him. Flashes of Travis' face fills in mind. He has waited for this. To be near the man who killed his Uncle. He was ready to shove his gun so far up this guys...!
Manning, suddenly, gets too close to a blade from the wall and cuts himself, "Ouch!" He winces.
Hellboy snaps back at him just as Kroenen becomes alert from the noise. Knowing he was not alone and he's been expecting them all. Hellboy glares at him with a dirty look, silently telling him to shut the hell up! He turns back towards the chamber and Kroenen was gone! Hellboy stiffens in alert and walks into the room, cocking his gun. He walks up to the phonograph and stops the music.
"Hey." Manning, suddenly says as he looks down. He holds up his finger to show Hellboy, "That went deep."
Hellboy rolls his eyes and continues to look for Kroenen. Manning frowns as he hears metal scraping. He turns and there he was, Kroenen! With a swipe of his blade, he strikes at Mannaing. Manning holds up his arm in protection, but feels the blade cut through.
"Hey. Hey, what's wrong with you?!" He shouts as he falls to the floor and glares at Kroenen. His eyes widen as Kroenen moves to strike again and covers himself.
Hellboy blocks his strike with his stone arm and stands in front of him with a cold glare. Kroenen uses his swordsman skills, but every strike he made, Hellboy blocks it with his powerful right arm. Like a coward, Manning hides behind the chair near the phonograph and watches Hellboy continue block Kroenen's strikes. With a swish, Hellboy grunts as his nose is slashed. He growls lowly as he turns to glare down at Kroenen. Now he was really angry.
Kroenen crosses his blades, but Hellboy grabs them both with his human hand, ignoring the cold steel digging into his flesh and blood. He yanks Kroenen forward and, with his stonen hand, he punches him till his still mask crumples against his fist.
"You killed my uncle." Hellboy snarls down at him. "Your ass is mine." He rears his fist back and punches him harder till he flys backwards and slams against a wall.
Touching his nose, Hellboy checks to see how bad it was as blood stains his hand. He looks as he hears rasping laughter coming from Kroenen. Manning gets up, frowning at that noise.
Hellboy scoffs, "What are you laughin' at, you Nazi son of a..." BAM!!! Under his feet, a huge trapdoor falls open. "WOAH!" He quickly grabs on to a rope as he and Manning drop through, along with the phonograph. The rope in Hellboy's hand spins through a copper pulley, but a large knot jerks him to a stop. Manning grabs the edge real fast and pulls himself out of the trapdoor. His eyes wides in terror as huge six foot sparkling steel blades shoot out of the ground, piercing through the skeletons of fallen souls who tried to come across Kroenen's path.
Kroenen slowly pulls himself to his feet, still wheezing in laughter. Manning looks up and watches Kroenen walk towards Hellboy who continues to dangle from the rope. He swirls his blades in the air, ready to cut the rope, but his head whips back as a metal gear comes flying at him. He looks across the door and sees Manning glaring at him as he holds several gears in his hands, armed and dangerous.
"Don't even think about it." He warns.
Suddenly, a loop of the rope wraps around neck and yanks Kroenen forward! Before he goes over, he frantically digs his blades into the floor, anchoring himself. Hellboy has used the rope hanging below him as a lasso. Hellboy grabs him tightly with his stone fist and, with a brutal yank, he pulls Kroenen into the pit!
With a horrible scream, Kroenen drops past them and lands backawards onto the spikes. He wriggles like a fish caught on a hook, only making it worse, as he slides further down the blades. Dust pouring through his wounds. He looks up and sees Hellboy standing over the edge of the pit, holding a large gear above his head, straining softly as he holds it.
"That's all for you...pinhead." Hellboy grits his teeth and tosses the gear into the pit. Kroenen emits a horrid scream as it crushes him.
Manning tosses the rest of his gears into the pit, feeling proud. He looks up and watches Hellboy sticking a cigar in his mouth and clicking his zippo, but he couldn't get it to fire up.
Looking at him in disbelief, Manning scoffs, "What are you doing?"
"Havin' a cigar." Hellboy mutters and frowns when Manning snatches his zippo out of his hand. "What are you doing?"
"You never light a cigar that way." Manning scorns and takes a match, striking it as he lights up Hellboy's cigar. "You use a wooden match. Preserves the flavor. See?"
Hellboy could tell the difference, he was impressed that Manning did something nice for him...for once. He gives him a crooked grin.
"Thank you."
"Thank you." Manning scoffs.
"You'd better stay here. I'll find a way out. We'll come back for you." He says.
"You better." Manning says as he looks around and moves to sit down as Hellboy takes off to find the eggs and Katherine, too. He grew worried for her at every footstep he made.

In a narrow tunnel, Kat and John begin to advance carefully through with their flashlights guiding their way. Who knows what horrors waiting for them down here. They weren't prepared for this or any surprises Rasputin had for them. Kat grew worried for Hellboy, wondering if he was safe. Just ahead, a cave-in. Pieces of ceiling, timber, coffins and corpses form a chaotic barrier.
As they squeeze past, John couldn't help but think about how Hellboy feels about him being around Kat.
"So, he thinks that you and I... That's why he's mad at me." John mutters.
As Hellboy was scouting for the others, he snaps his head up as he hears voices echoing around him but he wasn't sure where it was coming from. It sounded like John and Kat!
A few bones roll by, wet earth drops onto their shoulders. They draw their arms close to their bodies, pointing their flashlight beams straight down.
"But it's not true, is it?" John had to ask.
Kat frowns, "What?"
"That you feel that way about me." John stutters.
Kat sharply turns towards him with an annoyed look, "You want to know now? Here?" She scoffs and shines her light at him.
Hellboy drops to his knees and presses his ear to the ground, he could hear them from under him. He follows their voices, but he strains to listen to hear Kat's answer.
"Uh, yeah." John stutters.
Kat sighs exasperatedly, "John, you and I are friends. I'm friends with every agent in this bureau, we're practically family, and it's pretty clear that I'm with Hellboy. Got it?" She scoffs and turns, "Jesus, red, white, whatever, you men are all the same." She rolls her eyes.
Hellboy snorts, "That's my girl." He whispers.
"Hey, wait up!" John's voice echoes from below.
"Have you found them yet?" Manning voice erupts from Hellboy's ear radio.
"I got 'em right below me. It's a matter of minutes." Hellboy reassures him.
"Okay. Good. Could you hurry up? Because it's a...it's a little spooky in here."
Hellboy snorts, "You wanted to work the field, pal. Be in charge for once." He grins, finding this so funny, but he needed to concentrate on getting to Kat and the others.
Kat and John reach a wider section of Tunnel 'B'. They find themselves calf-deep in brown water. When they find themself in a natural cavern, they all freeze when they look at the sight in front of them.
"Oh, my God." Kat's eyes widen.
Before them all, the cavern wall was covered with translucent eggs and guarding those eggs was, not one, not two, not even three, but five Samamels! One Sammael is gnawing on a dry arm bone, with the hand still attached. When the light hits his face, his milky pupils constrict. He snarls at them all. Another Sammael emerges from the water. It shakes itself off. A third raise its head. They were surrounded.
"Let's back out, real slowly." John says softly as they try to move as slow as they could.
But, suddenly, a metal wall rolls out from the sides behind them, trapping them with the Sammaels. Kat gasps and turns to face the creatures.
The agent with them stood closer to the creatures, he goes his grenade belt off his shoulder and begins to set his timer.
"Myers, ready your grenades."
John slowly takes his grenade and begins to get them ready.
Kat slowly reaches for her com, "Marco." Her voice cracks. "Marco." She says stronger. "Marco! Marco! Marco! Get your big red ass over here!" She says.
Suddenly, from above, the rocks begin to crumble loudly and fall from the ceiling. When Hellboy heard Kat's panicked voice, he wasted no time. Using his strong stone arm, he pounds furiously.
"Hang on, babe. I'm coming for you!" He grunts and keeps pounding .
The agent grips the timer and twists it, the time lets out a loud ding, setting off the Sammaels in front of him. From the side, a Sammael pounces and slams him into a wall. The agent screams in agony as two Sammaels feasts on his body. Kat screams and backs away. John shoves her to safety and gets his gun. Firing off a few shots at the creatures. But it only pissed it off more. Before it could pounce him, a large rock falls from above and crushes it.
John covers Kat in protection as Hellboy falls from above and lands on top of the dead Sammael. He slowly gets to his feet, groaning in pain. Once Sammael was dead under him, two eggs pop open and rapidly grew into two new Sammaels. Hellboy turns and faces the creatures. Jumping into the air, he delivers a stone plunge on top of one's head. Two of the creatures jump. One clamps onto Hellboy's back, the other onto his leg. Hellboy howls in pain. The third one joins in, like lions dragging down a zebra. This time, though, the zebra fights back.
"No piggybacks!"
Hellboy pulls out his gun and fires a round into the chest of a Sammael. Two eggs glow -- two new Sammaels are born. Hellboy's torso is covered in blood. He falls to the ground. A fourth and a fifth creature spring onto him, biting. Hellboy is in trouble. And he knew it.
Kat sobs as she watches, she moves to help him, but John grabs her and yanks her back, "No!" She shouts and fights him.
"No, Kat, it's too dangerous!" He shouts.
"I'm more dangerous than them. Let go. If you're not gonna let me help him, then do something!" She shouts and gets out of his grip, shoving him hard. She cries as Hellboy continues to grunt and yell in agony. Tears pour down her face and an idea pops in her head, "Hit me." She demands.
"What?!" John exclaims.
"My powers are connected to my emotions. I'm too upset. I need to get angry. I need fury. Please!" She begs and watches Hellboy growing weak. "Do it! Now!" She yells.
John backhands her hard across the face, her head whips to the side in pain, but anger filled her soul. She turns back towards John, her eyes lighting up red and fury.
"You should be running." Her voice distorts. She never grew this powerful before.
John's eyes widen as he turns quickly to run, but trips in the water. He struggles through the murky water, but manages to hide behind a boulder. Kat turns as she feels the power rise inside her. Her entire body glowed with fiery aura. Two approaching Sammaels are ready to pounce her. Panting as the power continues to build inside her, growing stronger and stronger. Like a white-hot energy being forced to build and pressure was about to explode.
Before the Sammaels could attack her, her back arches as she screams out to release her power. Letting it all go.
Like a bomb going off, Kat's body exploded with waves of power. Burning through everything in its path. The Sammaels roar and wail as their bodies charred like dust in the wind and the eggs light up, popping light bubble wrap of goo. All the eggs were destroyed. Hellboy grunts as the last Sammael was thrown off him, but with the force of Kat's power and the loss of blood, Hellboy loses consciousness and everything fades into dark.
Kat sighs as she falls to her knees as her power dims. She felt so weak. She pants softly and struggles to get to her feet, but she could barely move. Every time she tried get to her feet, she fell right back to the ground.
"Hellboy?" She calls weakly.
"Do not worry, your Majesty." A woman's voice speaks next to her.
Kat gasps and turns fast, but yelps when something slams across her face, knocking her out.
Ilsa stands over her body with a smirk as she holds a pipe in her hand, "Everything is finally coming together." She says, her German accent rolling off her tongue.
After the power wave, John laid on the ground, bruised and weak. The boulder didn't work well as a shield and he was hit. As he stirs, he hears a woman's voice speaking.
"They're all here. All of them." John looks up and sees Ilsa and Grigory! "Just the way as it was promised." They both look and see John stirring. Ilsa walks towards him and kneels next to him with an evil smirk, "Thank you for this." She says as she holds up the grenade belt.
Before John knew it, he was chained to a stone column as Ilsa took large hammer and destroyed the timer on the belt. He struggles to get free, but he couldn't. All he could do for now was watch.
