Chapter 5: Round Two
During the fight, civilians go on about their lives as they roam a subway platform, waiting for their train or leaving to head to work or home. With a loud crash, Hellboy and Samuel both fall through the ceiling, smashing into an empty ticket booth. Several people scream and run from the impact. An explosion of coins, glass, and steel shatter everywhere along with sparks from the lights. As people struggle to their feet, they see a crater made where the booth use to be. Hearing gruff struggling and loud growling coming from the hole. With a loud yell, Hellboy is thrown out.
"Woah!" He shouts as he flies backwards, lands on a line turnstiles, uprooting them all. He finally slides to a stop at the end of the platform, panting, but he turns his head and sees a subway coming towards him.
"Oh, crap." He says as the light from the subway shines over him.
Sammael flies through the air, unfolds its bone scythe. Hellboy rolls away and Sammael misses. The tip imbeds itself in the floor and then Hellboy gets up, slamming his stone hand into Sammael, but he twists sharply. Hellboy misses and his stone hand crumbles into a concrete column.
Kat yells as she uses her powers to help her glide through the path that Hellboy and Sammael fell through. She could hear several people screaming. She finally slides through the hole and yelps as she uses her powers to stop her from crashing. Hovering over the crater, she freezes like a deer in headlights as she faces several civilians.
"Uh...heh, heh..." She meekly gives them a wince of guilt. "Don't mind me." She gently drops to the ground and follows the fighting noises as everyone watches her.
Sammael grabs Hellboy and tosses him again till he slams into the wall, tile and concrete explode from the impact. Hellboy groans and hears a phone ringing. He looks up and sees an old payphone. He gets up and snatches it off the wall, sparks fly everywhere.
"It's for you!" Hellboy shouts and smashes it across Sammael's face. Whamming him over and over, Hellboy continues to teach Sammael an important lesson. "You...shouldn't...hurt...people!" He shouts at every swipe.
With a twist of its own arm, Sammael blocks the final hit and crumbles the payphone. Sending it flying across the platform and crashing into the wall. Hellboy watches with a shocked look as Sammael's arm crunches loudly, returning its bones back to normal. Sammael moves and swipes his scythe at Hellboy, but he dodges every swipe. It hits a column and tries to hit again, but it misses continuously.
Hellboy backs away and smirks, "You missed."
But Sammael seemed to know what he was doing. Hellboy watches it back away and turns to eye the column. Hellboy looks and watches it crumble more and realizes his mistake.
"Oh, crap." He looks up quickly and watches the office above crash down over him. Collapsing furniture, the ceiling, everything all over him.
Sammael takes a step towards the crowd and roars , causing screams to erupt from the fleeing public. When it takes a step towards them all, it grunts loudly as vines wrap around it. It roars in frustration. Kat stands behind Sammael, using her powers to keep him contained. Everyone watches in fear, yet curiosity and wonder.
"Sammael, you are such a bad doggy." Kat grits her teeth as she holds on to it.
Sammael roars and struggles to fight, it pounds its fist into the ground and pulls itself forward. Determined to break out of her power.
Kat groans as her feet slides over the ground but she grunts loudly and yanks back, struggling to hold on. Sammael did not like being trapped again. Sammael growls and turns towards her, giving her slack as he begins to move towards her. She gives him a warning eye.
"You don't want to do that, Sammael." She warns.
With a loud growl, he turns to lunge towards her, but she was ready. Unleashing her power, she yells as she sends a large red ball of pure power towards him, sending him flying backwards and slamming against the wall.
Panting softly, "I told you so." Kat sighs out.
With a loud roar, Sammael struggles to get up; its body crackling loudly as it repairs its bones. He growls as he looks up at her, sending her a ferocious roar.
Before he could pounce her again, Hellboy shoves all the debris off him as he gets to his feet. His entire back was covered with broken glass stabbed into his flesh, but he didn't let it bother him. He needed to focus brining Sammael down before he hurts someone.
"Hey, Chunk-face!" He shouts out as he rises from the debris. "You can do better than that. Big monster like you." He pants out as he stands up straight, blood trailing down from his brow all the way down to his chin, dripping from the top of his neck.
With everyone running around, fleeing and yet watching the battle, Hellboy and Sammael take their stand in front of each other then charges towards one another. Hellboy rears his stone hand back and punches Sammael in his face, brining his hand down on the top of its head. Sammael moves to strike him, but Hellboy catches his arm and breaks it. With its broken arm, he swings it under Hellboy's feet, tripping him and slamming him to the ground. Hellboy yells in pain as the glass embedded in his back digs deeper. He turns fast, but lifts his head in alert as Sammael grabs him by his ankle. Hellboy flies up, crashing through the plate glass of a second mezzanine above the platform. He skids on the tile floor, scraping a jagged line with his stone hand. He slides past a group of bystanders and into a row of backlitsubway ads. He lands in a shower of glass and debris on wooden bench, breaking it in two.
Groaning, Hellboy moves to sit up and flinches when a stray piece of debris lands on his head at the at the last minute.
"Ow." He mutters and struggles to get to his feet. He looks up and gets to his feet while Sammael bends and yanks the gate off the hinges that led to the second floor. Several people move away to avoid it as he climbed the stairs.
Kat's hands light up as she uses her powers to fly up to the second floor. She rushes towards Hellboy.
"You okay, Red?" She pants out.
"I've had better days." He grunts out.
Together, they turn fast and see Sammael coming up the stairs, growling lowly at them both.
"Ok, I'm tired of playing. How about you, Kitten?" Hellboy scoffs.
"Way past that." She sighs out.
Suddenly, they both hear a woman calling out in panic over the screaming and growling, "My kittens!! My kittens!!!"
Hellboy and Kat both turn and see a wooden box full of kittens right in the middle of the battle.
"Aw, crap." Hellboy groans.
Right when Sammael charges, Hellboy scoops up the box, holds it high as Sammael attacks him. Using his bone blade, Sammael swipes to strike at Hellboy, but he dodges and the blade pulverizes the bench.
"Babe, catch!" He shouts and tosses the kittens to Kat.
As Kat catches the crate, Sammael slashes at Hellboy, scattering a dozen shrieking citizens. Illuminated by sparks and shorting lamps, Hellboy advances, blood dripping from his forehead and nose.
"Red!" Kat shouts and tosses the kittens back to Hellboy as Sammael swipes at her. She dodges and backs away from his strikes. Yelling, she runs up a column and flips as she dodges another swipe. Once on her feet, she shrieks when Sammael strikes her, sending her flying back and sliding over the ground. Kat cries out as she slams into the wall.
Sammael turns and its tongue shoots out, but Hellboy grabs the tongue before it hits his flesh, trapping it in his stone hand in a tight grip.
"Second date. No tongue!" Hellboy yells and spins Sammael around, slamming him to the ground over and over while holding the box of kittens safe in his other arm.
Using the tongue, Hellboy throws Sammael out a glass window. Sammael dangles above the tracks, but he re-joints himself and grabs a handhold on the train wall above the tunnel. From there, he pulls on Hellboy, sliding him toward the jagged glass. Sammael pulls harder and enters the tunnel.
"My kitties! Be careful with my kitties!" The woman wails.
Grunting, Hellboy continues to fight and free himself, "Lady, give me a break!" He yells and falls to his knees, his sweaty face is millimeters away from being sliced by the glass.
Kat groans at the aftermath. She spits out a mouthful of blood and grunts as she struggles to get to her feet. She rushes towards Hellboy and grabs her knife from her sheath. As she calls her powers, the knife lights up with an aura of red fire. She kneels next to Hellboy just as he was mere inches from the shard. With a furious swipe, she stabs into Sammael's tongue, digging and twisting into its flesh. From below, Sammael wails in pain as Hellboy lets go. It frees itself, but it looks before it and its eyes widen when a subway train appears out of nowhere heading straight for Sammael. It splatters the thing against the tunnel wall and plows on. Sammael's body sprawls motionless at the side of the tracks.
"I hope that hurt." Hellboy grunts out.
Kat sighs as they both get to their feet and Hellboy still held the crate of cats. They mewed softly, alerting them that they were ok. Hellboy rotates his stone hand, flexing his wrist as he turns towards the girl who owned the kittens. She rushes towards him and takes the crate, giving him a soft yet scared smile.
"Thank you." She says.
Hellboy uses his stone hand and caresses the kittens, "My job." He says simply. He could never resist kittens.
Kat moves towards the edge of the window, looking down to see if she could spy Sammael's mangled body. She couldn't. She turns towards Hellboy, gaining his attention.
"Red, we need to make sure it stays dead. Remember, if one dies, two will rise." She states.
Hellboy nods, "Come on." He rushes towards the window and jumps down. He looks up and moves to catch her as she jumps.
The crowd behind them rush to watch them both as another huge crowd from the end of the platform watches. They both pace to see Sammael's torn body. But, still, a black flame rises from its body and splits into two.
"Shit." Hellboy sighs, "This time. Stay dead, will ya?" He scoffs.
"We need to get back to headquarters, this is way beyond what we expected." She scoffs and watches the black flames fly away. "Let's go find Abe." She says and, together, they rush through the tunnels to return where they left Abe and Clay.

Under the water, Sammael's eggs begin to methamorphosis rapidly. The embryos burst out, gyrating in the water, swelling and distending. Badly wounded, Abe peers from his hiding spot and senses that Sammael's not there. He quickly swims to the surface, his weird blue blood trailing behind him. The water boils with energy behind him. Abe staggers out of the pool and hides behind a crumbling shower stall. Behind him, several creatures come to the surface. Shaking, Abe pushes his belt locator and collapses.
Clay sat alone in the tunnels, waiting patiently for Hellboy and Kat to return. Finally, he hears Hellboy's voice erupt from the radio.
"Clay, I'm getting a signal from Abe."
"We're heading back right now." Kat says over the radio.
Clay sighs and continues to wait, unaware of Kroenen drops softly from above. Clay didn't even hear him. But he did sense something. He turns and looks, there was Kroenen standing at the end of the tunnel, not far from him. He quickly gets to his feet and points his gun at him.
"Buddy, don't take another step." He warns, but Kroenen didn't listen.
With a twist of the knob from his chest, Kroenen winds himself up. Clay didn't take any chances and opens fire on Kroenen. Kroenen's body violently shakes from the gunshots as dust flies out from the wounds, but he doesn't go down. Clay gasps in shock and struggles to reload. Kroenen catches the sand that poured from his wound and watches it slip through his fingers. He grabs his blade and swipes it around. As Clay finally got his gun loaded, Kroenen stabs Clay into his abdomen. Clay grunts in pain. But Kroenen wasn't done. He continuously stabs him over and over as Clay shoots him again.
Hellboy and Kat both freeze at the sound of gunshots echoing in tunnels. Kat's heart drops into her stomach with fear.
"Clay. Oh, no!" She gasps and runs with Hellboy as he draws his gun.
Twin rivulets of blood run from Clay's nostrils as he falls against Kroenen, then slowly to the floor as Kroenen withdraws his blade. He stands there, unfazed by Clay's bullets in his chest. Dust pours from his wounds and piles up neatly at his feet. Soon, he hears Hellboy coming. He places the knife on the floor, then lies down next to Clay. With a twist of the knob, the whirring stops and Kroenen's body shakes as if he was having a seizure. Just as Hellboy and Kat arrives, his body stops and he lies there, playing possum.
"Oh, my god." Kat whispers and drops to her knees as Hellboy kneels next to Clay's body. She sobs softly and covers her mouth to muffle her cries.
"Man down. I need an ambulance right away. Do you hear me?" He quickly contacts the others. Demanding for help.
Kat checks for a pulse, it was very faint.
"Man down! Do you read? Do you read?" Hellboy shouts in his radio. "Quarry, Moss? Do you read me?"
Kat presses her hand over the wound, trying to keep pressure over it, "Come on, Clay, please hang on." She sniffles as blood pours through the webbing of her hands.
"Man down!" Hellboy shouts louder into the radio.
"They're dead!" Kat shouts at him. "They're both dead!" She sobs and covers her mouth, sniffling softly.
Hellboy sighs, "Shit." He switches the channel to contact directly to the Bureau. "Hey, Red King here, anyone there? We need help!" He says.
"Go ahead, Red King."
Hellboy sighs, "We need help down here. Clay, Moss, Quarry are all down. Send an ambulance right away."
"Roger, Red King. Backup and ambulance en route. 3 minutes."
"Hear that, Bud? Help's on the way. You're gonna be ok." Hellboy says, trying to keep Clay conscious.
"We need to get Abe." Kat says.
Hellboy sighs and nods, "I'll go. Stay here." He gets to his feet.
"Be careful!" She calls out as he rushes to find Abe.
"Abe?" Hellboy calls out as he reaches the man hole that Abe went swimming in.
He reaches the shower room and scans the area, keeping his gun ready. He hears soft wheezing and moves quickly towards the noise, drawing his gun. It was Abe! Bleeding but alive, leaning his walkie-talkie.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unconscious, Abe floats in a special tank. LED strips read water temperature, pH level, etc. He's encased in a bio-cast: a cybernetic healing unit wrapped around his thorax and right arm. A web of tubes and hoses keeps him in place. Hellboy stood in front of the tank, shirtless and bandaged up. Kat leaned on the tank, her arms crossed over her chest as she was dressed in lounge pants and a clean tee, a bandage on her neck where Kroenen held his blade against her flesh. Hellboy studies Abe, as if he was in a guilty trance.
Tom Manning stood on the other side of the med bay, lighting up a cigar, "He'll make it." He puffs a few clouds. "But not everyone was so lucky. Two agents died today. Clay probably won't survive the night."
"Not now, Manning." Hellboy says, even Kat could hear how tired he was. Emotionally and physically.
Manning simply scoffs at him, "Please. My problem with you...You're reckless. Both of you."
Hellboy turns towards Manning, feeling anger rise inside his chest. Kat looks up at Manning as she wipes a tear away.
"Those men trusted you to lead them as a team. Where were you?" Manning scoffs at Hellboy.
"I knew those men better than you did. Kat and I both did."
"Ah, I see. That makes it all alright then." Manning says sarcastically.
"No, it doesn't make it right, but we stopped that creature, didn't we?" Hellboy says.
"That's what you do. That's why we need you. You have an insight. You know monsters." Manning scoffs.
Kat turns and glares at him with a cold, blank look as Hellboy takes a warning step towards Manning, "What are you trying to say?"
"This whole thing is a farce because, in the end, after you've killed and captured every freak out there...there's still one left: you." Manning says, then turns to leave.
"Hmm. Hey, uh, Manning." He calls out, stopping him. "I wish I could be more gracious but..." He turns swiftly and yanks a tank from the wall and lifts it up over his head to bring down on Manning. Manning cowers and yells in fear as he covers himself, bracing for the painful impact, but he shouts as the tank goes flying over his head, crashing through the glass wall.
Smashing through a glass partition, the mangled steel tank lands in middle of the hall in a rain of glass and aluminum studs. The agents, John, and Travis all jump in surprise. John draws his gun in alarm, but Travis rolls his eyes as he hears Manning's shouting. Manning stumbles out of the Med Bay, pointing at Hellboy as he turns to look at Travis in fury. He realizes Hellboy's rage is incredibly dangerous; they couldn't take any more chances with him.
Gasping with fright, "I want that thing locked up, starting now...Now!!! You hear me??!!" Manning shouts, then yelps and runs away as Hellboy walks over the glass, glaring at Manning.
Travis sends Hellboy a disappointed look as John holsters his gun. Travis turns and John follows him out of the Hall. Hellboy turns and sees Kat walk over the glass, carrying a blank look. She was too quiet to Hellboy's liking. It scared him...a lot.
(Forgot to warn everyone. Smut chapter coming up next. Working on it right now. Trying to meet the same pace as my first Hellboy book. Anyway, hope everyone is enjoying this book. Please remember to vote and leave comments. Lots of love ~Song~)
