Chapter 3 : Under the starlit sky

"In the silence of the night, under a canopy of stars, the heart speaks in ways that words never could."
-Vespera

The sunlight streamed through the wide, open windows of the children's home, casting soft golden rays that stirred YN from her sleep. The laughter of children playing outside floated into the room, and she sat up, stretching and breathing in the crisp morning air. Before she could get out of bed, a group of children burst into the room, their faces bright with excitement.

"YN, come quick!" one of the younger girls, Mina, exclaimed, tugging at her hand. "We have a new guest today!"

Curiosity piqued, YN quickly dressed and followed the children to the main hall. The sight that met her eyes left her momentarily speechless. Standing amidst a cluster of giggling kids, dressed impeccably in a tailored suit, was none other than Kim Namjoon. His sleeves were rolled up just above his elbows, revealing toned forearms, and a soft smile played on his lips as he handed out colorful wrapped gifts to the children.

For a moment, YN could only watch, taken aback by this unexpected but heartwarming sight. Namjoon's usually commanding presence was softened by the tender way he interacted with the children. His deep laugh resonated through the room as he kneeled to speak at eye level with one of the younger boys, offering him a toy car.

Namjoon glanced up mid-laughter and spotted YN standing by the door. His smile widened, and his eyes sparkled with recognition. "Good morning, YN," he greeted, his voice warm and inviting.

"Good morning, Namjoon," she replied, a small, surprised smile gracing her features as she walked toward him. The children around them giggled and chatted excitedly, some clambering to show off their new toys.

Namjoon stood, towering over the group, and turned his full attention to YN. "I hope I'm not intruding," he said, an amused glint in his eyes. "I thought I'd spend my morning somewhere special."

YN's smile grew as she took in the scene. "You're full of surprises, Kim Namjoon."

They spent the day surrounded by the joyful chaos of children's laughter and games. Namjoon's serious exterior melted away as he joined in games of tag and read stories aloud, each animated expression making the children laugh louder. At one point, YN and Namjoon found themselves sitting side by side on a small bench in the courtyard, watching as the kids raced around.

The afternoon sun cast long shadows as it began to set, bathing the courtyard in a soft orange glow. Namjoon leaned in slightly, a playful smirk on his lips. "I think I lost count of how many times you caught me staring at you today," he teased.

YN chuckled, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Is that so? Maybe you should focus on winning a game for once instead of getting distracted."

Namjoon's laughter was deep and genuine, making YN's heart flutter. "I think I already won something far better than a game," he said, his gaze softening.

They shared a quiet moment, the sounds of the children fading into the background as they enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. The warmth between them grew, unspoken but palpable. YN felt her usual guard lower as they exchanged smiles, her heart unexpectedly light in his presence.

As the day turned to evening, they found themselves sitting together on a low wall near the entrance, sipping warm coffee. The sky was painted with hues of pink and purple, and the soft rustle of leaves accompanied their conversation.

YN took a sip and glanced at Namjoon, a question forming in her mind. "How did you know my name?" she asked curiously, setting her cup down.

Namjoon tilted his head, a sly grin crossing his features. "I had a little help from my new friends," he said, nodding toward the children. "I asked them to find you, and they called out 'YN.' That's when I knew."

A soft laugh escaped her lips as she shook her head. "You really are full of surprises."

The conversation continued into the night, filled with easy laughter and shared stories. Namjoon's eyes sparkled as he listened, truly present, and YN found herself sharing moments she hadn't spoken of in years.

Eventually, the stars emerged one by one, and the children's home grew quieter. Namjoon stood, brushing invisible dust from his suit. "It's getting late," he said softly. "Let me take you home."

YN glanced at the sleeping children in the hall and back at Namjoon, his offer lingering in the air. With a warm smile, she nodded. "Let me say goodbye first."

She quietly said her farewells, kissing the children's foreheads and whispering promises to return. Namjoon watched her, a new admiration blooming in his eyes as she moved with such gentle care. When she was ready, she walked out with Namjoon, who opened the car door for her, his touch as respectful as ever.

The car ride was filled with a quiet, sweet awkwardness. The soft hum of the engine accompanied the occasional glances exchanged between YN and Namjoon. Though the silence was comfortable, both of them felt their hearts racing with unspoken words and stolen looks. Namjoon's hand rested casually on the steering wheel, but every so often, his fingers would tap nervously, betraying the calm facade he tried to maintain.

Suddenly, Namjoon cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "YN," he said, his voice softer than usual, "would you like to see the stars tonight?"

YN's eyes lit up with surprise. She turned her head slightly to meet his gaze. "The stars? It's already late, Namjoon."

He smiled, his dimples deepening, making him look a touch more boyish. "I know, but there's this spot not too far from here. It's quiet, peaceful... just for a little while."

For a moment, YN considered declining. She was exhausted, and the day had been full of emotions. But the way Namjoon looked at her, hopeful and patient, made her nod. "Okay, as you wish."

A few minutes later, Namjoon pulled the car up to an open garden nestled on the outskirts of the city. It was surrounded by tall trees, their leaves whispering secrets to the cool night breeze. The sky stretched endlessly above, clear and dark, scattered with brilliant stars. The city lights were far enough away that they didn't drown out the celestial view.

YN stepped out of the car, taking in a deep breath. The crisp air carried the scent of earth and the faint fragrance of flowers that lined the path. Namjoon walked beside her, his steps matching hers as they strolled to the center of the garden where an old, wooden bench sat. He glanced at her, watching the way her eyes sparkled when they lifted to the sky.

For a while, they sat in silence, the only sounds being the gentle rustle of the leaves and the distant chirping of crickets. YN's gaze was fixed upward, tracing constellations she used to point out as a child. But Namjoon, he was watching her.

"The stars are beautiful tonight," she said, breaking the quiet.

"They are," Namjoon replied, his voice low. "But their reflection is more beautiful in your eyes."

YN blinked, her cheeks flushing under the silver glow of the moon. She turned to him, a shy smile playing on her lips. "You always know what to say, don't you?"

"Not always," Namjoon confessed, his fingers lightly brushing against hers on the bench. The touch was hesitant at first, almost questioning, until he grew bolder and took her hand gently in his. His thumb traced light circles over her knuckles, grounding the moment between them. "I just speak the truth."

YN glanced down at their joined hands, her heart thudding softly. The warmth of his touch sent a subtle thrill through her, making her smile.

"You're so unique, YN," Namjoon continued, his gaze earnest and searching. "You care so deeply, give so much. It's rare to find someone who looks at the world the way you do."

YN's eyes softened as she looked up at him. There was something so genuine, so unguarded in the way he spoke that made her chest tighten. "I think you're unique too, Namjoon. Behind all the suits and power, there's someone who laughs with children and goes out of his way to see the stars with someone he barely knows."

Namjoon chuckled, his deep laugh vibrating between them. "Maybe I want to know you more, YN. Maybe that's why."

They sat like that for a while, hands intertwined, exchanging soft smiles and quiet conversation. They talked about the little things-childhood memories, places they wanted to visit, favorite books and music. Namjoon shared stories of his ambitious younger days, how he built his business and the long, sleepless nights that came with it. YN spoke about her time at the children's home, how it shaped her into who she was, and the dreams she had for the future.

At one point, YN laughed at something Namjoon said, the sound filling the quiet space like a melody. He couldn't help but smile, his heart swelling at the sight of her happiness.

The hours passed unnoticed, the sky shifting from deep indigo to a lighter shade as the moon rose higher. The air grew cooler, and Namjoon reluctantly checked his watch. He sighed, breaking the spell that had held them.

"It's late," he said, though he made no move to stand. "I should take you home."

YN nodded, though a part of her didn't want to leave. As they rose from the bench, Namjoon held her hand a moment longer before letting go. Their eyes met once more, a silent promise lingering between them.

Namjoon drove YN home, the journey filled with the same quiet comfort as before. When they reached her doorstep, he turned to her, his gaze soft. "Thank you for tonight."

YN smiled, her heart full. "Thank you, Namjoon. For everything."

With a final glance, she stepped out and walked inside, her smile lingering long after the door closed behind her.

Namjoon watched her until she was out of sight, his heart beating with a rhythm that felt both unfamiliar and exhilarating.
