Chapter Three
Hel stole a glance at the star-lit sky, she knew she should not be creeping through the palace walls, but she seldom followed what she should do, choosing to do what she shouldn't. She moved silently, casting a small spell of invisibility on herself so she wasn't seen, she moved with a quick pace until she got to her destination; the Grand Library of Asgard.
Hel looked around her and saw no one, he had mastered spells of Night Vision and Umbrageous Teleportation, which meant she could see in the dark and travel through shadows. Hel did not open the doors of the library, for she knew they made a small noise, rather, she travelled through the shadows to the other side.
Once on the other side, she produced the globe of small green light, just enough to see two feet in front of her, and she went to her favourite section of the library, the myths.
Hel cast a spell that showed her what scrolls and books she had touched, ad which ones she had not, she grinned, Hel had been studying magic for over six years now, and was proud to call herself proficient on the art of spell casting, she chose a volume which she had not read yet and sat down on a plush chair to read. Little did Hel know, she was being watched.
Hel flipped through the book with a quick pace, she had a knack for absorbing information quickly, but one part caught her eyes, and she began to read with attuned detail, "The Children of Loki," she whispered in an Ancient Asgardian language The children of Loki were mad things, Loki had two children with the female Jötunn Angrboða from Jötunheimr Hel took a sharp intake of breath 'My mother' she whispered as she continued on reading, the wolf Fenrir, the serpent Jörmungandr, "They're my brothers?" she whispered in shock as she went on reading Loki also gave birth to Sleipnir after turning himself into a female horse when his father demanded he sabotages the work of a craftsman from being able to complete the fortification of Asgard in one season, "I knew he didn't do it willingly, he might've had fun though" Hel said to no one in particular. She went on reading and was horrified at a particular spot, she dropped the book in surprise.
"Now what are you doing here so late at night daughter of mine?" a voice asked, lifting Hel's hood from off her head, she had been wearing a black clock to better blend with the darkness.
"Father!" Hel gasped standing up, "I thought you were in your bed chambers!"
Loki gave a joyful laugh and lit all the candles in the library with a wave of his hand, "I could say the same for you my princess, excellent work, by the way, you are very good at your invisibility spell, you've nearly mastered it!"
Hel's face flushed with pride and embarrassment. "Thank you, father! But if that is so, how did you find me?"
"You are my daughter Hel," Loki said with a grin, "I would know if you left your bed chambers, I was able to sense your spell anyways, but that is only because of the blood bond we share," he explained.
Hel fidgeted with the sleeve of her dark green nightdress, "Why have you shown yourself to me father? I am not trying to be rude, just curious."
"Oh I understand, I just saw that you found a strange part in the book, one that seemed to horrify you, I can tell you the true story of what happened, one that wasn't written by an enemy of mine," Loki offered, sitting in a chair opposite of Hel.
"Please tell me, father!" Hel said unclasping her cloak and setting it in her lap.
"Of course darling, now, let me start with your eldest brother Fenrir," Loki said.
"Hello my son, you are Fenrir Lokison, and you are a powerful child," Loki said fondly, looking at the small bundle wrapped in black. The child had wolflike features and was genuinely handsome and strong for such a small being. Loki could sense that he would grow to be giant and strong, as the Jotuns were, he had to hide this child from Odin, for, when he came of age, the child would be a giant wolf.
Loki set Fenrir down with his mother, "Keep him safe for as long as you can, Odin surely will be out for him once he learns that Fenrir was born, let him know what love is, that is all I ask of you," Loki said as he fled back to Asgard.
Odin, thankfully, had not noticed Loki's absence, only the all-seeing God Heimdall did, when Loki arrived back on Asgard he thanked Heimdall for not exposing him, "Do not thank me, prince, for Odin, will find out your doings."
Loki nodded and teleported to his chambers faster than the blink of an eye.
Just as Heimdall said, Odin soon found out about Loki's son, Loki was ordered to go to the courtroom only a decade later.
"Hello, Allfather," Loki said, bowing down before his king.
"Bring me your son, I know," Odin commanded, having no time for Loki's tricks and games.
"But, Father! He has not even reached adulthood yet!" Loki protested for the sake of his son.
"Oh I know Loki, this is your punishment, Fenrir has already grown to be a massive Jotun wolf, we must isolate him as soon as possible," Odin said without an ounce of sympathy in his voice.
"Father! He is just a child, would you do this to your own son!" Loki said, trying desperately to save his eldest son from whatever punishment Odin had for him.
"That is the problem Loki, he is not my son, he is an abomination and will bring forth Ragnarok, so you shall bring him to me at once!" Odin yelled.
"Mother!" Loki cried, tears brimming in his eyes, turning to Frigga for help, Frigga took one look at her son's hopeless face, he had no power in this situation, and he felt love for his child, Frigga knew what love for a child was, she was the goddess of motherhood after all.
"Allfather, at least let the child age some more, he is still a child!" Frigga said, trying to reason with her stubborn husband.
"No Frigga, he must pay for his crimes, go and give me the son at once!" Odin ordered, slamming Gungnir, his spear, on the ground, finalizing the demand.
With tear-filled eyes, Loki put on a cloak and rode his steed on the Bifrost and to Jotunheim.
"What are you doing here Loki?" Angrboda asked when Loki arrived at Jotunheimen.
"The Allfather has requested for Fenrir to be brought to Asgard," Loki said, holding his chin high, then lowering it to his chest, "I am sorry."
"Of course, but you will come back to me will you not?"
"Yes I will, I assume Fenrir is sleeping?"
"He is, take him with you to Asgard while he is still asleep," Angrboda said, standing up and following Loki to where Fenrir slept.
Fenrir had grown to be a large Jotun wolf, he looked dangerous, but, from the short times Loki had spent with the boy, he had a calm and kind heart. Loki put a spell on Fenrir that made him easier to swaddle and carry, bid goodbye to Angrboda with tear-filled eyes meant for Fenrir not her, and left.
Loki arrived at Asgard and presented the child to Odin, taking off the magic, "This is Fenrir Lokison."
Odin called for the guards, "Take him away!"
Fenrir was still asleep when the guards took him to places unknown to Loki at the time, with shoulders hunched he whispered, "What are you going to do to him?"
"He is destined to kill me during Ragnarok, he will be taken away, bound and gagged, until he is able to break the bonds we put on him, he will never be freed. Be warned Loki, the bonds are unbreakable, therefore the day Fenrir breaks those bonds, Ragnarok begins," Odin said, head held high.
"Mother, did you have any word in this?" Loki asked, pain oozing from his aura.
"I am afraid not Loki," Frigga said, inching closer and closer to the edge of her throne.
Loki could not take it anymore, all the pain and sadness was washed away, the only thing he could feel was anger, fiery hot anger that filled the throne room like a wave of fire.
"HOW COULD YOU! MY CHILD DID NO WRONG, HE IS ONLY A CHILD! SO HE IS DESTINED TO KILL ODIN AT RAGNAROK YOU COULD NOT WAIT?" Loki screamed in agony, his power ricocheting off the walls of the room, his form moulding and shifting between different things, a man one moment, and a snake the next, his magic came near to killing a guard, but seemed to never come near Frigga.
"Guards! Take him to his chambers!" Odin ordered showing no remorse for the god at his feet.
Loki fought off the guards, his magic more powerful than any sword they wielded, it was until Frigga stepped in that they could not subdue him, "Stop! I shall take him to his chambers!" she said, stepping off of her throne.
The entire throne room stood at a standstill, it was as if the Norns had stopped time for a few moments, "Loki, my son, come," Frigga said lifting Loki up from his kneeling position, she then half carried him to his chambers.
Odin watched as his wife and adopted son went off, feeling no regret for the young life he had stolen.
"And that is what I remember from the day that they took your brother," Loki finished, leaning back in his chair.
Loki looked over to see Hel with her mouth covered and eyes filled with tears, "Oh father!" she managed to choke out, "That's horrible, my dear sweet brother! What happened to him?"
Loki sighed, "Tell me what you know of his 'punishment'."
Hel thought back to the book she had just read, "Fenrir inspired too much fear in them for them to let him out from under their watchful eyes, so they reared the pup themselves in . Only r dared to approach Fenrir to feed him, he grew at an alarming rate so everyone decided that his stay in Asgard had to be temporary. They all attempted to bind him with different chains, they were able to do it by telling him that these fetters were tests of his strength, and clapping and cheering when, with each new chain they presented him, he broke free," Hel looked to Loki for permission to move on, Loki nodded sadly, "At last, the gods sent a messenger down to , the dwarves were able to forge a chain whose strength couldn't be equalled; it was wrought from the sound of a cat's footsteps, the beard of a woman, the roots of mountains, the breath of a fish, and the spittle of a bird, things which don't exist, and against which it's, therefore, futile to struggle. Gleipnir was its name. When they presented Fenrir with Gleipnir, he suspected trickery and refused to be bound with it unless one of the gods would lay his or her hand in his jaws as a pledge of good faith, "Hel looked to Loki, "I did not finish afterwards, you came and I dropped the book."
Loki sighed, he knew he should have waited for just a few more seconds before coming up behind Hel, he continued the story for Hel, " None of the gods agreed, knowing that this would mean the loss of a hand and the breaking of an oath. At last, Tyr, for the good of all life, volunteered to fulfil the wolf's demand. And, sure enough, when Fenrir discovered that he was unable to escape from Gleipnir, he chomped off and swallowed Tyr's hand. The fettered beast was then transported to some suitably lonely and desolate place. The chain was tied to a boulder and a sword was placed in the wolf's jaws to hold them open. As he howled wildly and ceaselessly, a foamy river called "Ván" flowed from his drooling mouth. And there, in that sordid state, he remained until Ragnarok." Loki finished, looking for Hel's reaction.
"But, father! Did they have another reason for binding him?" Hel asked, shivering slightly.
"Yes, he is destined to devour your Grandfather during Ragnarok," Loki said, eyes looking far away.
"Is it okay if I ask whatever happened to Jormungandr?" Hel asked, leaning on the edge on her seat, looking at her father with wide eyes.
"It has the same beginning as Fenrir's. The only difference is how they punished him," Loki said, "Do you know what that is?"
"All I know is that he is now on Midgard."
"Yes well, unlike your other brother, Jormungandr would grow to be a large serpent, the Norna prophesized him to swallow your Uncle Thor and kill him, and Thor shall slay him in turn. In order to avoid this until the last moment possible, the gods threw him into the Midgardian sea when he was still small, now, he wraps around Midgard and is biting his own tail, which is why we call him the Midgardian Serpent," Loki explained.
"Are we all destined to start Ragnarok?" Hel asked quietly.
"Unfortunately yes, but Hel," Loki said, tilting Hel's chin up and forcing her to look him in the eye, "You have the power over if Ragnarok will destroy life as we know it or let it flourish, never forget that, but it is late, you must be going to bed, you might get a few hours of sleep until breakfast."
