Maya was born to Ming Na Ding and James Coulsen in Ta Lo. Because her father was American and not native to Ta Lo, her parents came to an agreement. Maya was to train and spend her summers in Ta Lo. The rest of the year she was to spend with her father, where she would get an education. But that all fell apart when she was ten, her dad had passed away in an accident. After the funeral, she went back to Ta Lo.

Four years later the people of Ta Lo selected Maya to protect one of their own. At the young age of fourteen Maya packed her bags and was sent to San Francisco to protect the son of Ying Li. What she didn't know was that she would find comfort and friendship in the boy she was supposed to be protecting with her life. And that one day those feelings would be so much stronger.
