Damien Gray
“What do you think about this, Damy?” Sebastian asked.
We were about an hour away from the place Layton wanted us to gather in.
“Well, it’s good land. I can’t believe Layton and Zev haven’t spread over here,” I commented.
We had just taken off from Layton’s pack, Blue Bloods. He and Zev were making final plans. Most of the Wolves were going to camp in the fighting grounds to wait for Dylan to arrive.
“We should buy it,” Sebastian said, grinning up at me.
“I’m not interested,” I distractedly commented, while picking up a few rocks from the ground.
We were making our way right by the river, and the ground was humid and full of small colorful rocks. They got my attention, much like the diamonds did. Although I knew the stones had no monetary value, they were nice to look at.
“I like these,” I told Sebastian, throwing a few stones at him.
He cocked an eyebrow at them, before throwing them into the water. “They’re nice,” was all he commented.
“Why are you not interested? The piece of land is large enough for our taste, and it’s close to Cassidy,” Sebastian said, smirking when he said her name.
“I told you to quit making comments like that about her,” I reminded him.
“I’m not doing anything,” Sebastian said, raising his hands up innocently.
“It’s too far from home. If anything, I’m more interested in expanding Mountain Peak,” I said, finally answering his question.
Sebastian laughed, and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. His arm tightened uncomfortably around my neck. I knew he was doing it on purpose because he kept on laughing.
“You’re going soft now that Emilia’s pregnant?” Sebastian asked, grinning up at me, and flicking my nose when I shook my head at him.
“I’m thinking about the pack. What would we do with this territory? Wolves would probably infest it because we’re never here,” I replied.
“Layton should buy it then,” Sebastian said, and I didn’t miss the scowl in his face.
It had been almost five months since we’d met Layton and Cassidy, and Sebastian had not been able to get along with Layton yet.
If anything, things between them were worse. Whenever Sebastian and Zev got together, things became impossible. They both had too much fun teasing Layton, and Layton did not respond too kindly to their taunts.
“He actually should,” I agreed.
Once we arrived at the site, Roderick was the first to greet us.
“You two are here early,” he said, while shaking both our hands.
Roderick arrived two days prior, and he’d been staying with Zev. He and Layton were still not getting along.
“Layton wants Sebastian and me to scope out things before the fight,” I replied, while my eyes roamed the area where all the tents were up.
“It’s looking good. I did a sweep a half hour ago. Everything’s clean. I have a Wolf standing guard near Midnight Moon Territory. Dylan and Caine will be on their way in a few hours,” Roderick informed me.
“The surprise he’ll get,” Sebastian said, laughing at the idea.
He was much too happy about the fight, and the prospect of killing Wolves without restraint.
“Things are looking good on our side,” Roderick agreed.
While Sebastian went to mingle with a few of Wolves from Roderick’s small pack, I stayed behind with him.
“How’ve you been?” I asked.
Although we had kept constant contact, Roderick hadn’t been around my pack for the last two weeks. He had been running between Caine’s and Dylan’s pack, trying to weigh in the waters for us.
All the precautions he was taking and the scoping he was doing looked good in Layton’s eyes. He didn’t entirely accept Roderick and he certainly didn’t trust him yet, but at least Layton wasn’t as hostile when Roderick was around.
“Busy,” he replied. “But I’m managing. I tried to stay out these last few days that the war was nearing us.”
“Things have calmed down though,” I commented.
“They have. When this is over, everything will get better.”
I agreed, but only for one reason. The fact that the bite remained in Emilia’s neck meant that she had gotten pregnant. But it didn’t feel real until she confirmed it with the pack doctor. Ever since it was confirmed that we had a baby on the way, I found the fight between Layton and Dylan more than petty— I found it pathetic.
I made a promise to Emilia just before taking off from Mountain Peak. I swore to keep the peaceful lifestyle that Anthony had when he was alive. I didn’t want any wars, and I didn’t want anything to put Emilia or the baby’s life in danger. They were my priority.
It was noticeable when Layton and Zev finally arrived. They had with them an army of Wolves, and for some reason, they were all howling up at the sky. There was an electric, excited mood around us. It seemed like everyone, except for Cassidy and me, wanted what was about to happen.
A fight that had started because Liam, a Rogue, had fallen in love with Cassidy was now ending in a bloody mess. For the life of me, I couldn’t get a story straight from anyone about what had happened.
Cassidy claimed that Liam loved her and he was a kind-hearted Wolf. In my opinion, she was too nice for her own good, and I really doubted Liam was as kind-hearted as she believed.
He had kidnapped her, and that said something about him. But Cassidy happened to think he had died after Layton had killed him. She believed that the reason Layton and Dylan were feuding was because Dylan had disrespected Layton and his pack.
In Layton’s defense, he had been truthful to Cassidy. Dylan had disrespected him. But Wolves threw the word ‘disrespect’ too loosely in my opinion.
Layton had not wanted to kill Liam, because he knew that Cassidy cared for him. Since he felt too guilty about killing him, he sent Liam to Dylan as a prisoner. Liam was never meant to get released. Dylan, for his mate, had released Liam from prison.
When Layton demanded an apology from Dylan— things went downhill.
‘An Alpha does not apologize’ was a phrase that kept getting thrown around.
Things got worse when Dylan refused to hand Liam back to Layton. Thanks to all those very idiotic occurrences, we were now standing in the battleground.
“You don’t look happy,” Cassidy said, landing a few steps away from me.
There were Wolves in the area that still hadn’t seen us, and they kept staring her beautiful, white wings. Cassidy’s wings were different from Sebastian and mine. I assumed it was because she was a girl. Her wings were brighter and feminine looking.
“I want this to be over,” I shrugged.
“Amen to that,” she said, interlacing her arm with mine.
I wasn’t interested in walking around the area, but she began dragging me around through the tents. The real fight, or at least the one Layton was planning, would occur a few miles from where we were.
“Emilia told me to tell you to stay safe. I called her right before coming here,” she told me.
“Yeah, she didn’t want to let me go,” I chuckled.
“Layton is excited about confronting Dylan.”
“I bet Dylan’s just as excited. I really don’t get Wolves,” I said, honestly.
“They’re destructive,” Cassidy admitted, and her comment made a few heads turn our way.
We were surrounded by Wolves, so there was no way our conversation would be private.
“I thought you would put up a bigger fight about this. You keep saying it goes against what we are— all this fighting and killing that will happen.”
“Layton is my mate,” Cassidy said in a soft voice. “I love him. You have no idea how much he wants this to happen. I begged him not do to do this, but it didn’t amount to much. His mind was already set from the get go.”
“Yeah, I can see that,” I agreed.
“Besides, I’ve met Alpha Dylan. He’s a complete jerk,” Cassidy said, snappily.
I laughed at her words, and the way she’d spoken. I had never really heard her talking bad about anybody. Hearing her words against Dylan was a first from her, at least when she was with me.
“I know how he is,” I told her. “Zev and I met with him a few weeks ago. I’m not sure if Layton told you about it. It’s not so much that he’s a jerk. He’s an Alpha,” I shrugged.
It was the only way I could describe Dylan. The meet was short. He wanted to send a message to Layton, since they both refused to see or talk to each other.
The only reason I had accompanied Zev was because no one trusted Dylan. Sebastian was there as well. Since he and Zev had grown really close, and Seb thought Dylan was a threat, he had been on the rude side with Dylan.
The meeting had been stressful, and Sebastian’s jokes had not helped at all.
“Well I met him once. I didn’t like him, and I didn’t like his people. They are so arrogant.”
“Cass, Layton is the same,” I told her, laughing.
“No he’s not!” Cassidy quickly defended.
“Yes he is. Zev is the same way when he’s with other Wolves. Although Roderick is very reserved, he’s the same way too. They are all the same. Like you said, it’s a Wolf thing.”
Cassidy stayed by my side the rest of the day. Once in a while, Sebastian, Zev, Layton, and a few other Wolves would join us. For the most part, they were all doing rounds in the area or talking strategy.
Cassidy, Sebastian, and I were mainly there to do damage control. We were going to stay high in the air, so that we were out of reach from the rest of the Wolves. But Layton wanted us to make use of our gifts.
“I talked to my sister. Things are still going according to plan,” Jared, Layton’s Beta, informed us.
We were all outside of Layton’s tent. Cassidy was beside me, but she was clinging on to Zev. I still didn’t get that relationship, or how Layton was so cool with it.
If Cassidy even got near any guy that wasn’t Zev, Jared, Tyler, or me— Layton threw a fit. He didn’t want her near the rest of the guys.
Tyler was usually following close by Cassidy, he was one of her guards and also Layton’s third in command. Layton and Jared were best friends, so he trusted him with her because of that. I just didn’t understand where his trust of Cassidy with Zev came, especially when Cassidy had told me Zev and Layton used to hate each other.
“They will arrive around midday. It’ll be a large group,” Jared continued.
“You’re talking to your sister?” I interrupted.
“Christy knows how to handle Blake,” Jared explained, talking about his sister and Blake.
“How does he know what is happening?” Sebastian asked.
“Blake and Leila, Dylan’s mate, are very close. Leila tells Blake, Blake tells Christy, and Christy tells us,” Tyler casually explained.
“Isn’t that considered treason or betrayal or something, in pack law?” I asked.
I wasn’t sure of the technicalities of it, but I was sure what Christy was doing went against some of their own rules.
“We didn’t ask Christy for anything,” Layton stated, firmly. “She used to be part of our pack until hers and Jared’s dad was killed by Liam and his Rogues. Even though Christy went Rogue, she is still part of the pack, and she’s always going to be Jared’s baby sister,” Layton said.
“I guess,” I mumbled, and Cassidy smiled up at me.
“I said the same thing,” Cassidy softly whispered while Layton and Zev started discussing tactics and positioning.
It was dark out when most of the Wolves started getting into their tents. It honestly looked like we were in battle ground. Everyone was organized though, and Layton and Zev had control of all of the Wolves.
Roderick was around, but he kept himself hidden in the shadows for the most part. Although he exchanged a few words with Zev throughout the day, it was mainly Sebastian and me who he talked to the most.
At night, Sebastian and I bunked in the same tent.
“Are you scared?” Sebastian asked.
I could hear the cracklings of fires that hadn’t been put out yet. Some Wolves were standing guard outside, who would alternate during shifts.
I sighed, and put my arm under my head as a pillow. Sebastian had hogged them all on purpose, although he threw one at me a few minutes after I stopped fighting him for it.
“We’ve never been in a situation like this before,” I replied.
“That wasn’t my question, Damy,” he said, chuckling lightly. “It’s okay to be scared.”
“Are you scared?”
“I am,” he admitted. “We have a lot to lose if something happens to us. The pack is depending on you. You have Emilia at home and a baby on the way. I have a very pissed off Tania, who didn’t want us to come here. Unlike other times when we did stupid shit, this time we actually have something to go back to.”
“We’ll be fine,” I told him.
It was the first time Sebastian sounded sentimental about being there. He had been one of the most excited about getting a chance to kill Wolves.
“Yeah, we will,” he muttered, but he didn’t sound as sure he usually did.
I didn’t like the doubt in his voice. Sebastian was the most confident person I had ever met. Within reason too, because he was also the strongest person I knew.
It didn’t sound right for him to be doubtful or feel scared. After all, I was nervous and doubtful about the whole thing for the both of us.
There was a major change of plans in the morning— very early in the morning.
While Christy had assured Jared that Dylan would arrive in Layton’s pack at around midday, Wolves standing guard around the entire area poured into the camp ground at almost six in the morning.
Almost everyone was asleep. Loud and long howls outside of our tent woke me up. Everyone went on alert, but most people were too nervous, giddy, or sleepy to actually behave accordingly.
There was complete chaos for almost ten minutes, before Layton, Zev, and Roderick appeared and took control of the situation.
“They’re here,” Layton announced.
He was only wearing a pair of black shorts. Zev was wearing some sweats and a white t-shirt, but he was barefoot. Roderick on the other hand, was fully dressed. He was wide awake, and was the only one who looked ready to fight.
The entire crowd circled around the clearing where Layton, Zev, and Roderick were standing. While Layton and Zev stood over two chairs, probably so the Wolves could get a better look at them, Roderick simply stood beside them.
I noticed Cassidy walking behind Layton, Zev, and Roderick, and joining them in the circle. She was fully dressed, but her eyes looked sleepy. She had probably just woken up as well.
“We’re not sure how, but they cut some hours from their trip. We only have fifteen minutes to clear the area because they are about twenty to twenty-five minutes away, depending on their speed,” Layton announced.
“We already had this moment last night. All there is left to say is,” Zev said.
“Fight with honor, defend your pack, and kill as many mother fucking Wolves from their packs as you can!” Layton shouted in a growl.
All around me, Wolves started shifting, howling and growling. Others growled and yelled out with Layton, before joining their pack members and shifting as well.
“I guess this is it,” Sebastian said, coming to my side.
He placed his arm around my shoulders and crushed me to his side.
“I guess it is,” I mumbled, noticing Cassidy heading our way.
She had been briefly with Layton and Zev, before coming over to us.
“Do your best, Damy. But remember,” Sebastian said, looking at me seriously. “You come first,” he whispered in my ear.
I looked at him, and he nodded at me. “I only care about your safety. You don’t leave my side, no matter what,” he ordered. “Understood?”
I nodded, just as Cassidy arrived in front of us.
“Ready?” She asked.
It was fresh outside. Cassidy was wearing a thin cardigan, but she was the only one really covering herself. Most guys had already shifted into their Wolves, and Sebastian and I were wearing a t-shirt. It would fall off either way once our wings came out.
“Do you want to go up already?” Cassidy asked, looking up at the sky, which was already lighting up.
“I guess now is as good time as any,” Sebastian said, wrapping an arm on both our shoulders.
It was going to be our position, the clear sky. We were supposed to keep it that way, unless we noticed Dylan and Caine had the upper hand. If that was the case, Layton wanted us to create a storm with everything we had, and direct all our energy at the enemy.
If that wasn’t enough, he wanted as much damage as we could cause with our elements. Cassidy with fire, Sebastian manipulating the air, and I would shake the ground with all I had. I didn’t want to use my element. I had received my element a couple of months ago— Earth.
How little I had been able to control it was all due to Sebastian, who had managed to somehow stop all the earthquakes I almost caused.
When Sebastian asked me to lightly shake the ground or to control any of the greenery around us, I only made the entire area shake. It had not been a light shake. Every time I started something, I had a hard time controlling myself.
The Wolves were still. Layton, Zeverus, Jared, Micah, and Roderick were standing about five to six feet in front of the rest of the Wolves. They hadn’t shifted into their Wolves yet. There were so many Wolves. Layton and Zev had other Wolves positioned in different points of the woods, and we were hovering over it all. The distance we had from the ground was far enough that we disappeared into the sky.
Everyone was silent in the area. I could hear the pounding of paws from the approaching Wolves. My heart was beating rapidly in my chest. I didn’t realize I was darkening the sky, which was already getting brighter, until Sebastian pointed it out.
“They’re coming,” Cassidy whispered.
Both Cassidy and I were on either side of Sebastian, who was going to be the one calling our shots.
“They’re more than I thought,” Sebastian admitted.
“They have the two biggest packs. Layton has about ten to fifteen Wolves less than Caine,” Cassidy told us. “But Dylan has almost one hundred more.”
“They’re still a shitload,” Seb said.
“We'll be fine,” I assured him.
“We have to be,” Sebastian said, but there was an edge to his voice.
We were high up. There was no way they would be able to reach us. But I couldn’t help but feel bad for the Wolves down below.
“They’re comfortable with nudity, aren’t they,” Sebastian commented when four of the guys shifted into their Wolves.
I was trying to be quiet, but I laughed out loud when he said that. Cassidy laughed too, and she slapped his chest.
“Don’t say that. Do you know who they are?” Cassidy said, nodding down at the four guys who stood in front of the rest of the enemy packs.
“I recognize Dylan and Caine from the pictures. The two in the middle,” I told her, and Sebastian nodded. We had already met Dylan either way. But seeing him naked was slightly uncomfortable.”
It seemed like he either didn’t know who Caine was, or he really didn’t care.
“Pay attention, Seb,” Cassidy loudly whispered. “Caine’s the blonde one and Alpha Dylan is the one with the dark hair. The other two are their Betas, Victor and Jace.”
“I know Jace and Dylan. I should trip Jace,” Sebastian said, smiling mischievously.
“Stop!” I snapped, slapping his hand away when he was about to flick it to trip Jace.
Sebastian could’ve still tripped him either way, but he just grinned at me.
“I bet Jace would get confused. Hey, it might cheer up our Wolves,” he said, and even Cassidy cracked a grin.
Layton and Dylan were exchanging a few words. From the looks of it, most of their words must’ve been disagreements. The more they talked, the louder they growled, and the more they frowned.
Zev looked calm, but his posture was strained. He was prepared for what was about to come. Caine on the other hand, was simply staring ahead. His face was expressionless. He didn’t really have to do anything though. His height and fierce features were intimidating enough.
When I brought it up to Sebastian, he just shrugged and blamed it on the illogical disease of being a Werewolf.
It calmed me down that he was no longer as nervous as before. If he was making jokes, he must’ve been getting comfortable with the situation.
“Crap, I think Layton’s about to lose it,” Cassidy said, worriedly.
“I feel like a peeper creeper,” Sebastian commented, frowning as he looked between us. “Seriously, I do.”
“I feel left out,” I added.
“I think I should go down,” Cassidy said.
“No way,” Sebastian quickly interrupted, putting his arm over her stomach, blocking her. “We’re not moving from here. Out of all of them, we’re physically the weakest link. If we get bit, we’re done. No one’s going down there,” he stated.
Either his tone or his words must’ve worked on her. Although Cassidy was still looking nervously down at Layton, she stayed put.
We couldn’t hear what they were saying, but the Wolves behind Dylan and Layton were both throwing out insults and growling at their opponents.
It seemed like the fight was about to start. Time seemed to have slowed down as I roamed my eyes over all of the Wolves in the area. The four Betas were the first to shift, followed closely by Zeverus, Caine, and Roderick. Layton and Dylan were glaring at each other. From where I was, I could feel and hear the growls rumbling through their chests, even though they weren’t talking.
It was all very dramatic, and somewhat frightening. I wasn’t scared, but I suddenly became aware of the magnitude of the entire situation.
When Layton and Dylan finally shifted and were both about to attack each other, a hushed silence took over the area.
“What’s happening?” Sebastian asked, looking confused. Both Cassidy and I mirrored his features. I didn’t understand what was going on.
He flew a few feet ahead of us, and Cassidy and I quickly followed.
“I don’t see anything,” I said.
My eyes scanned the area, but all I saw were Wolves standing around, looking in the direction of the woods. Something must’ve happened, because it had gotten the attention of everyone in the area.
“I’ll go check,” I said.
I was about to fly down, but Sebastian grabbed my arm before I made a move.
“You’re not going anywhere. We don’t know what’s happening,” he said, but I could tell that he was unsettled by what was going on down below.
“Oh my God,” Cassidy suddenly muttered, breathlessly.
She started flying down. Despite the fact that both Sebastian and I were trying to stop her, Cassidy kept going.
“You can’t show yourself, Cass!” Sebastian snapped.
He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, but Cassidy kept going.
“I can’t believe this,” she said, looking like if she was going into hysterics
When we landed on the ground, it was very much ungracefully. I barely managed to stay upright. Cassidy and Sebastian though, landed awkwardly on the ground. By then, Cass was having a full on break down.
All of the Wolves from Dylan’s side looked at us strangely and suspiciously. Some of them even growled. The three of us had our wings out, and there was no hiding them. They were out in plain view.
Dylan and Caine both quickly shifted, and they were staring at us with wide-eyes. I couldn’t tell whether they were surprised or freaked out or scared.
I didn’t realize Layton had shifted back into his human form, until he was running over to us.
“I can explain,” Layton desperately said, trying to take Cassidy in his arms.
“Liam…” Cassidy mumbled, just before a guy started making his way towards us.
While Liam walked in the space that separated both sides— everyone around the area went deadly silent.
Comment and vote if you’d like! Yes, I know. But this is how I planned it all along, and I didn’t want to change it. It’s more of a teaser. Don’t hate me too much!
