Polaris

Two.

There were two babes.

Just lying there.

The first thing that ran through Polaris's mind was panic. Sheer and utter panic.

The second thing that Polaris did was yell for Sol. If he was going to be left with two babes, he certainly was not going to be left with them alone. Perhaps between the two of them, they could manage to not harm the infants that had been left literally at his knees.

Only when he was sure Sol had heard his call that Polaris finally truly looked at the twins before him. Immediately, his breath was stolen away at the sight.

They were as different in appearance as the sky was from the ground, though they both glowed with the same sort of light all the stars did, though theirs seemed more intense, more focused. Polaris could only imagine the Power they would have once they were fully grown.

Laying nearer to the golden side of the garden was a female child. She emitted a golden light, more warm and pure than even Sol's was. Her skin was pale, though looked as though a fine dust of something that glimmered that same color had been brushed over her body. Crowning her head was hair as black as the night between the stars.

The other child was male, and as opposite his sister as Polaris knew could be possible. The light coming from this babe was the purest silver, even more intense than Polaris's own glow. Crowning his head was hair so silver that it seemed to be his own light given physical form.

Those observations were all Polaris had time to make before Sol finally came into view. Not that Polaris was aware of that fact until the Star spoke. "You called, brother?" Sol said dryly, still far enough away that he could not see the two small figures lying on the ground. "I have never heard such panic in your voice. Is something the matter?"

Polaris looked up to his brother, the panic from his voice echoed in the silver of his eyes. "I finally know what was growing within Nyx with the help of Tyr's power," Polaris said, beckoning his brother forward to see the two bundles of light before him. "And she left them with me. I do not know what to do."

"Do not tell me the great Polaris is afraid of a couple babes," Sol teased lightly as he knelt at his brother's side. Without a pause he gathered the female child into his arms. Careful to support her head, he drew her close against his chest as he had seen the women of the surface do in caring for their babes.

Her response to his touch was immediate. A soft mewling noise left her lips, and she nuzzled against the warm chest, almost as though she were drawing from his heat. The sight warmed Polaris's heart it was so sweet.

"Do the children have names?" Sol asked, beginning to rock the girl in his arms back and forth. The motion resulted in a burst of burbling laughter from the babe.

"I was more concerned with their sudden appearance than with what to call them," Polaris admitted. He drew the other child into his arms just as he had observed.

This babe did not seem to truly like his inexperienced touch. Instead of the response his sister had given, his little hands curled into fists that were waved about in the air angrily. The small face scrunched up just before he started screaming his displeasure for all the Heavens to hear.

The screams made Sol laugh brightly, amused at his brother's unskilled touch, though he quickly turned to keeping his own charge happy so she did not start screaming as well. "Perhaps we start with names then, all else can follow after," Sol offered. He looked down at her, amazed to see eyes the same color as the golden glow coming from her skin and smiled.

After a good, long thought, Sol nodded. "This one, her name shall be Helia."

The sound of the name brought a delighted sound from the babe's lips, and she shone more brightly. It was obvious at a glance that she approved of the name.

With that success, Polaris looked at the still screaming child in his arms. "Come now, little light, let me see your eyes," he cooed softly, hitching the babe higher in his arms. Moving carefully, he shifted a hand to tickle at the pale stomach the way he had seen some women do when trying to put their babes to sleep.

The motion seemed to startle the little guy into stopping his screams even for just a moment. The small fists instead went to grip Polaris's fingers, and then he seemed content, offering the star a smile accompanied by a brightening of his silvery glow. His eyes opened to reveal they were the same silver as his hair. The babe held the elder spirit's gaze in a way that no one but Nyx had ever managed.

After a few moments, Polaris smiled. "Your name is Endymion."

And thus, the Sun and Moon were named.
