Ch:59 (Heart's desire)
The next morning
Yinsu was a little nervous, among all these people she only knew Crown Prince GuānYû that to because he had visited when she was young and that was around ten years ago, she had to take them to their town's largest mountain which had been terrifying their people from going up there and collecting woods, herbs, fruits and many other gifts nature provided selflessly, she noticed Fire Master entering the room with Crown prince, they were speaking in whispers, they would have breakfast and then leave for the mountains.
Lord Ping was pacing in the room where his daughter stood near the window, he was worried for the safety of his daughter, no matter how powerful the Crown Prince is a father is always worried for their child, he noticed the three women appearing a few minutes after Crown Prince and Fire Master, he was a little assured thanks to Wind Master about his daughter's safety.
They sat down for breakfast. Yìfēi noticed ShuîYuê's eyes were puffy and red, and she knew why, "Be very careful, Your Highness; the slopes are quite steep at some parts, and it's slippery due to rain," Lord Ping cautioned.
"We'll be fine," Crown Prince assured, looking around the room; Water Master was finally eating something instead of poking and staring at her bowl of rice, unlike last night, "All of you are prepared?" He asked, all four elementals either replied or nodded their heads.
They got inside the carriage, and it drove them to the foot of the mountain; everyone clasped their things properly before they began to hike up the mountain; The Crown Prince stopped when they were a little further inside the forested mountain.
"I have some important points to remind you," he began, "I'll be in the front with Miss Ping right behind me, she'll guide us, at the back of the group will be Fire Master," Xiàn Fèng nodded his head, "Yowards right and left will be Earth and Water Master, Wind Master will walk with Miss Ping in the centre," GuānYû told, he had noticed Yinsu was more comfortable around Wind Master.
"Keep a sharp eye, do not talk unnecessarily, save energy; we don't know what we are getting ourselves into, do not wander off in any condition, and no matter what, do not get separated," he added sternly.
"Yes, Your Highness," Earth Master replied. GuānYû nodded his head at her, and they began to walk.
Water Master glanced around the forest while watching where she was going, something didn't sit right with her, 'How come it's so quiet? There should be birds twittering or at least insects buzzing; it's deadly quiet,' she thought, sharing a knowing look with Earth Master.
"Your Highness?" Earth Master called, GuānYû raised his hand to halt.
"Yes?" He asked as they stood in a circle.
"It's completely quiet; forests aren't supposed to be deathly silent," Earth Master answered, glancing around the area with sharp eyes.
"I agree, it's like something is here," the Crown Prince started looking around, ShuîYuê stared at the muddy forest floor.
"I don't think there's a ghost here," she stated loudly.
"Water Master keep your voice down!" Earth Master hissed in annoyance.
"I think it's just some wild animal," ShuîYuê said even louder.
"If it's a wild animal, there should be some residues of its prey behind; there's nothing like that," Earth Master pointed out smartly.
"What if it doesn't leave residues?" Water Master asked with a smirk.
"What do you mean?" Earth Master questioned with narrowed eyes.
"This animal eats their prey completely; we found nothing, no feathers, bones, horns, it can mean only one thing," Water Master spoke, pacing around.
"It's a snake," the Crown Prince stated as he looked at ShuîYuê for confirmation who nodded her head.
"A big snake, not an anaconda though, but big enough to swallow a whole deer," ShuîYuê said walking towards Yinsu, "Miss Ping, what's at the top of the food chain here?"
Yinsu stared at ShuîYuê for a while, "At most wolves, tigers and lions are on the other side of the mountain," she informed.
ShuîYuê shivered hearing wild animals who loved meat were on the other side of the forest, "Thank you for informing us so soon," she muttered walking away from her.
"Wolves could devour deers or sheep's whole, insects will take care of the remains and bones will decompose," Earth Master chimed in.
"But it's not a wolf," Water Master told certainly.
"How are you so sure it's a snake?" Shù Zìrán questioned annoyed.
"Earth Master, use your intellectual mind, make use of your powers," ShuîYuê provoked.
Shù Zìrán scoffed placing her palm on the bark of a tree and closing her eyes, she could hear the forest now, from the breath of the squirrel to the speed of the fishes, she could feel it all, leaves falling off from countless trees while new ones bloomed, parasites sucking all the nutrients out of the trees what a fine symbiotic relationship, she could feel the push of the wind and the strength of the rocks.
"It's wolves, there are no large snakes," Earth Master said after a few minutes.
"There is a large snake," ShuîYuê said decidedly.
"So what we hunt some snake now?" Xiàn Fèng questioned looking around.
"We hunt the one causing trouble Fèng," ShuîYuê rectified as she walked in a different direction.
"We can't stray from the path!" Earth Master snapped.
"Miss Ping, is the direction Water Master walking towards the right one?" The Crown Prince asked worried.
"It's not the right one," Yinsu answered.
"See, Even Miss Ping is against it, Wind Master why don't you talk to Water Master?" Earth Master asked irritated.
Yìfēi looked at them with hesitation; ShuîYuê wasn't going to listen to her if she didn't breathe logic; her best friend was incredibly stubborn yet flexible; she wouldn't listen to anyone until they gave some logic which made sense to ShuîYuê Then she would change her mind in a second, "YueYue! Come back."
Water Master turned around, Crown Prince gestured for her to return she sighed before jogging over to them, "We can't go in that direction it's not the right one," Crown Prince put forth confidently,
"It's not the right one, but it'll take us where we need to go," ShuîYuê responded trying to sound polite.
"Where do we need to go?" Earth Master questioned sternly.
"We need to find that snake," ShuîYuê answered airily.
"I don't think we should be going after some snake," Crown Prince expressed his opinion.
"Then, with all due respect, you may continue on your way; I'll go look for it," ShuîYuê replied simply.
"We are not separating," Crown Prince reminded.
"You'll find nothing that way," ShuîYuê said.
"Why do you feel that way ShuîYuê? Did you see something?" Xiàn Fèng inquired with a soft tone.
"Not exactly, but I have a hunch we find something there," ShuîYuê answered, tightening her waist belt.
"Hunch?" Earth Master scoffed, "We are going to throw all the facts out of the window and go with some random hunches."
"Who told you to go? I am going there by myself Fèng take care of Yìfēi for me," ShuîYuê added, stealing Xiàn Fèng's perfume pouch from his waist belt; he looked at her confused. She merely gave him an assuring look and decided that was enough for Fire Master to understand why she took his perfume pouch.
"Water Master, you'll not go by yourself," the Crown Prince spoke decidedly.
"I can't take you all if you don't trust me," ShuîYuê said shrugging her shoulders.
"But it's dangerous and not the right path," the Crown prince argued exasperated.
"It is dangerous, but all right paths don't lead to the correct destination; sometimes wrong ones do," Water Master stated with a certain look in her eyes.
Crown Prince stared at her for a while, his inner conflict of mind and heart making it impossible to make a decision, he wanted to listen to Earth Master because she was right and stating facts, but he also wanted to follow Water Master where she was going.
"You can go alone; see you later," he said before gesturing to Yinsu to lead the way; at last, he crumbled to his responsibilities of keeping everyone safe and pushed down his heart's desire.
Yìfēi shook her head at ShuîYuê, "I'll be fine; Fèng's there; I am not worried about you, don't worry about me either," Water Master assured.
"All alone in some forest, no, I am going with you," Yìfēi told decidedly.
"You'll go with Crown Prince, he's stronger than me, and he can protect you better," ShuîYuê said as Xiàn Fèng gave her a small smile, "Fèng take her with you or else she's going to start crying or something," ShuîYuê joked.
Fire Master nodded his head, "Take care ShuîYuê," he patted ShuîYuê's shoulder before taking Yìfēi along with him, Water Master watched them until they were out of sight before she began her journey.
ShuîYuê looked around a tree carefully there were some marks on it, 'These marks are too precisely drawn to be from animals,' she thought taking her dagger and making a cut similar to the one on the tree on a different tree, 'If I get lost that would be cherry on top,' she thought with a scoff before she made her way down the path.
She noticed some sheds of a snake's skin, poking it with a twig. She found some further ahead, and by the size of the sheds, it was pretty clear that it was a large snake.
"So I was right after all, the cattle being killed is the work of a snake, what would a ghost get from killing cattle anyway?" She wondered out loud before stepping on a stick that cracked in two parts. ShuîYuê placed her hand on her heart to calm herself when she heard hissing whispers,
'Fuck, I am in that snake's territory.'
As she slowly walked ahead without making a sound, she could feel something staring at her; Water Master looked up cautiously, her eyes widening at the sight of a large green snake who was wrapped around a tree's branch, watching ShuîYuê with what she could figure interest.
Water Master gulped nervously the snake crawled down from the tree to the forest floor, its black eyes focused on ShuîYuê,
'Fuck, don't come near me, I admire snake's a lot, but please, I am a coward. Leave me alone,' she prayed as the snake stopped a few feet away from her; raising its head, it observed her curiously.
ShuîYuê hoped it was curiosity, and he was not sizing her up to figure out how wide it'd have to stretch its mouth to swallow her whole.
For a while it observed her like that before it crawled away, Water Master sighed in relief and as if that snake heard her loud sigh it turned its head to stare at her before he crawled further, ShuîYuê furrowed her eyebrows before walking after the snake, it would stop now and then and stare at ShuîYuê before continuing its path.
'This is such a bad idea, following a fucking snake, to Jun Wu knows where! He's, or she's, I don't know, is gonna swallow me whole, Mom, Yìfēi, Jīnyú, I love you all,' she thought dramatically before entering a cave.
Vines hung from the top of the cave and now and then a group of bats would fly by scaring the living daylights out of Water Master, she followed the snake who stopped abruptly, due to its large hood ShuîYuê couldn't see ahead, it slowly turned around and Water Master stared at the luminescent pearl in the water, it was emitting a bright light and serenity surrounded it.
ShuîYuê was slowly calming down from the aura of the pearl; she glanced back at the snake, who was watching her with amusement. Water Master was no expert in figuring animals and their behaviour she was however certain about the amusement in that snake's black eyes, she looked back at the pearl and took a step forward to admire it from a closer distance it was on top of a shell, and when Water Master took a closer look she could see her reflection in the pearl, it showed her face with a blurry image to her right.
ShuîYuê squinted her eyes and looked behind her to find no one there; she turned her head away and stared back at her reflection and slowly, the image was becoming clear. When she could make out the features, she leapt back, her heart racing against her ribcage.
She took a deep breath, looking back at the snake to make sure it was not using some charm on her; when it looked back at her with the same amusement in its eyes, she stared back at her reflection and beside her stood someone who she couldn't fantom.
ShuîYuê could hardly understand what was happening; she turned her head to the snake for help; it crawled into the water and stopped behind the pearl, its hood over the pearl-like an umbrella; she was anxious and worried about why she saw what she saw in the mirror?
"Hearts desire," a voice spoke and ShuîYuê looked around startled, "I can speak, don't look around foolishly mortal."
ShuîYuê stared at the snake Its tongue would analyse the air now and then,
"Y- You speak?" She asked with wide eyes.
"Yes, this pearl shows your heart's desire," it replied.
"B- but how?" She questioned bewildered,
"This pearl belonged to my ancestors; I am Its protector for this lifetime; they were cultivators," it answered in a raspy, hissing voice.
"Serpent cultivators?" She queried, it nodded its head, "How old are you.....sir?" She asked the last part purely out of respect.
"Four hundred years," it responded with slight amusement in Its voice.
"That's four times the age of the Emperor," she gasped.
"Are you saying I am old?" It asked with a hiss.
ShuîYuê shook her head immediately, " N- no, no, I- I mean you are wise from experience," she rectified before this old snake would swallow her whole.
"What do you value most?" It asked with interest.
"Wisdom, Intelligence, ambition," ShuîYuê was quiet for a while before her lips parted, "And love," she answered with utmost sincerity, lying to a snake that, too, one with the cultivation of four hundred years, didn't sound like a good idea to her.
It stared at her for a while, "You have all four within you, but you push away love constantly; don't ruin yourself over dried tears," it advised; ShuîYuê nodded her head slowly, "You should go back, your friends are waiting," it said crawling away.
"I should? I should." She nodded, walking away before she ran back, "Your pearl is really beautiful, Sir; I hope to see you again, bye," she added with a bow.
The snake watched her as she ran away, "What an innocent child, follows a large poisonous snake to Its cave and calls it sir," it spoke before crawling away.
To the left side of the forest mountain
Xiàn Fèng could honestly see the worry sweating off of Yìfēi; she was glancing back now and then and would mutter something under her breath; the bright smile which always adorned her lips was gone, replaced with a worried expression on her face.
Who was Xiàn Fèng kidding? He was scared himself; even though ShuîYuê could handle herself perfectly fine, she was still a close little friend, in the Fire Master's opinion, who attracted trouble like she was honey.
Earth Master and Yinsu were leading the group in the front, while Crown Prince was a step behind them, he seemed increasingly paranoid as howls of wolves echoed around the forest, it was late morning but Shaulon Town had horrible weather, it was usually rainy and even though it didn't rain today itself the sky was cloudy and no sunlight could infiltrate to shine the dark forest.
A scream suddenly pierced their ears, and they halted to turn around and share anxious looks; it was deathly silent; Xiàn Fèng could hear the breath everyone was taking when another scream slightly higher than the first one echoed. Crown Prince descended the slope, Earth Master shouting for him to stop, Xiàn Fèng and Yìfēi followed after him while Shù Zìrán groaned under her breath.
"Your Highness! You can't just run into any place you hear a scream from," Shù Zìrán tried to reason as she jumped down a log and hurried to keep up with the Crown Prince's quick pace,
"All the more reason to go in that direction!" Wind Master snapped at Earth Master who shot her a glare.
"We should be going in the opposite direction, that is the wrong way!" Earth Master bellowed as her dreadlocks slapped her cheeks due to her rushed descent on the path.
"Earth Master seriously?" Fire Master asked losing his calm.
"You are all ganging up on me!" Shù Zìrán accused as she stopped; Yinsu gave her a sympathetic look before hurrying after the group; none of them turned around, "If you do not go with me, I'll go investigate alone!" She shouted at them
GuānYû came to a halt, his quick breaths and drastically reducing patience gave him an annoyed look on his ever so calm and kind face, he slowly turned around, and Earth Master was around twenty feet away from him, "You will follow us," he stated in the calmest voice he could speak in.
"I will not go in the wrong direction!" Earth Master snapped at the Crown Prince. Her raged breaths, and anger took the better of her.
Crown Prince walked towards her, and she stepped back, "I am not asking you to follow us; I am telling you to follow us," he said in a low voice.
"Your Highness, why are we following some screams? We don't even know where they came from," Shù Zìrán replied with a lowered gaze.
"That scream could very well belong to Water Master for all we know," he reasoned.
"We don't know, what if it's faux attempts to stray us from our path?" She asked nervously.
"I don't care for faux attempts, I would be more guilty if we don't go and check if Water Master is fine or not," GuānYû put forth sternly.
Shù Zìrán looked up into his dark eyes. They held nothing but worry for someone, someone Earth Master didn't like in the slightest, and with that, he turned around and walked away. The ebony skin of Earth Master had goosebumps on it, she stared at the dried leaves and foliage before she followed after them with a bitter pain in her heart.
Yìfēi was rushing faster than anyone, Xiàn Fèng right behind her worried for the Water Master's safety. She suddenly halted causing Xiàn Fèng to abruptly stop and tumble down a little. The Crown Prince grabbed his arm and helped him up as they hid behind some trees to eavesdrop on some conversation.
From the corner of her eyes, Yìfēi could spot four men dressed in dark green robes that camouflaged well with the forest, "This woman knows our spot; we have to kill her," one of them told, glancing around; Yìfēi leaned back to avoid being exposed before she pressed herself closer to the trunk of the tree.
"She doesn't look that much of a threat," another one expressed leaning against a tree.
"She's a threat or not is not the question; she knows our spot is the trouble; we have to end her to avoid being exposed," the same one from earlier spoke.
"Lin is right, drag her out!" The one with a dark blue sash and a long sword ordered Xiàn Fèng to hold his breath as his eyes widened in horror at the sight of a bruised Water Master being dragged out, her hands were tied to a makeshift rope of vines, and her clothes were covered in mud.
Fire Master took a step forward when the Crown Prince pulled him back in his spot, "Don't be rash, Fire Master," GuānYû whispered, Xiàn Fèng huffed under his breath as he hid back.
Yìfēi watched her best friend being dragged with anger bubbling inside her heart. ShuîYuê's lips were slightly bleeding at the corner and she was pushed to the forest floor by a kick to the back of her knees.
"Lift her head," their boss ordered; one of his men grabbed ShuîYuê's hair and pulled it up; their boss walked towards her, "So, little miss, what were you doing in our area? My men found you hiding behind a rock and eavesdropping on our conversation," he bent down to Water Master's level.
"Don't you know that's rude?" He asked with a smile as he grabbed ShuîYuê's hair, "Tell me who sent you to spy?" He inquired his tone suddenly serious and angry.
"I came here to take a walk," ShuîYuê answered through gritted teeth.
He scoffed before his grip on her hair tightened, "To walk? DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A FUCKING GARDEN TO YOU!" He raged.
"Not by the looks, no," ShuîYuê shook her head.
"This bitch! Get Chao to break all her bones and leave her to be mauled by wolves before they gnaw at her bones!" He ordered standing straight up and punching a tree.
"Chao! Get here, you bastard!" The one who had kicked ShuîYuê yelled sometime later a man walked out of a cave, wiping his hands with a dirty cloth, the fresh splatter of blood covering his clothes and face; the said man looked up at his new victim, all colours draining from his face, his eyes were wide open in shock.
"What the hell are you staring at? Break her bones!" Their boss ordered.
The man in question slowly prowled around Water Master before stepping back,
"Boss, let her go," he requested; his boss chuckled.
"Look, this muscle head has lost his mind," he laughed, looking at his comrades who giggled.
"Boss, I am begging you, let her go," he pleaded again.
"You have hit your head on something?" Their boss asked clasping his hand on Chao's shoulder before he burst out into laughter, "I- I think that snake who had bitten him caused him memory impairment rather than poisoning," he snickered.
ShuîYuê stared at the man named Chao with curiosity in her eyes, "You know me," she stated as the boss looked between them.
"She's gone mad, she says our Chao," he pointed towards themselves, "Our useless Chao knows her?" Their boss threw his head back in laughter.
"Boss, let us leave her here, we don't want trouble," Chao begged again.
"What trouble can this woman give us?" Their boss asked with a scoff.
"Boss let's just leave," Chao pleaded again, and he and his boss began to bicker while Water Master stabbed the one near to her with her dagger.
Chao turned to look at his front when he saw three of his friends dead and writhing with pain on the floor, blood oozing out of their wounds. ShuîYuê wiped her dagger's blade on one of those men's robes before standing straight up, Chao's boss stared at her with shock as she walked towards them.
"So tell me who's causing these disturbances?" Water Master questioned looking between the two with interest.
"Kill her!" Chao's boss ordered as he unsheathed his sword; ShuîYuê sighed before throwing a sudden punch at their boss, who fell back; he touched the side of his face, which was bleeding, a black brass knuckle with blades adorned Water Master's right hand, "Bitch!" He yelled getting back on his feet.
In the span of the next five seconds, their boss was on the floor grunting in pain while Chao was on his knees begging for mercy; ShuîYuê turned around, twisting her dagger, which was embedded in Chao's boss's stomach, and he gasped in pain.
"Please let him go," Chao begged,
"Tell me who ordered you?" Water Master asked twisting her dagger as their boss screamed again.
"Lord Gao, it was him, he gave us money to create a misunderstanding between Emperor and Lord Ping!" Chao confessed as his boss shook his head at him, trying to say something but all he could do was grit his teeth in torture.
ShuîYuê hummed at his confession before turning around and pulling her dagger out of the man's body, "May your soul rest in peace," she whispered, summoning her Trident and piercing the man's heart; Chao cried for mercy as Water Master walked away.
"Kill me too!" Chao begged never-ending tears slipping down his cheeks.
"Why did you kill all those people? The entire Shaulon Town is scared that some ghost is infesting their mountain forest and refuse to come up here, why create the facade of a ghost?" Water Master questioned with a cold look in her eyes.
"Lord Gao said that Ghost King is in Heaven; if we spread rumours about the disturbances created by ghosts, no one would be suspicious," Chao cried.
Water Master leaned against her Trident which was six foot tall, "This is the problem with everyone in Heaven, they blame everything on the ghosts, use your brain, man, you wouldn't have been caught, anyone with some functioning brain cells would know not to use ghosts as an escape," she chided shaking her head in disapproval.
"How did you know?" He questioned,
"Simple, drop some of the body parts you cut in the forest. You could have blamed those poor wolves, but no, people want to be all bad and antagonising, but they don't have the intellect for it," ShuîYuê sighed in defeat, "Makes me tear up."
"But the animals we haven't been killing them!" He cried.
"Of course, you haven't," she assured staring at her bruised knuckles.
"Then is there someone here other than us?" Chao asked with a horrified look.
Water Master simply smiled, "You never know," she answered, stabbing her dagger into his throat; blood was oozing out like a waterfall or precisely blood fall; she watched him take his last breath before taking out the hairpin from his hair.
"Don't take things off the dead, ShuîYuê," she scolded herself observing the hairpin, "It's bad manners; Mom would scold you," she added when her eyes narrowed at the top of the hairpin; it had the seal of a leaf on it.
'Didn't I get something with the same leaf mark for Yìfēi years ago?' She thought rubbing the hairpin against her robes to clean the blood off it.
'Fuck it's really from Lang village, this man is Wu Yu's pawn, that jeweller who makes this jewellery, his shop had Wu Yu's junior there at that time, chances are pretty high that old fucker Wu Yu is in cahoots with Lord Gao, of course, that bastard wants North rebellions on his side,' she thought hearing footsteps, putting the hairpin securely in her hair she turned around to find Yìfēi running towards her.
Water Master stepped back as Wind Master engaged her in a hug they both tumbled down as ShuîYuê groaned in pain, "I was so scared!" Yìfēi shouted in ShuîYuê's ear who squeezed her eyes shut as her ears began to ring.
"Yìfēi," ShuîYuê rubbed her ear as Wind Master looked down at her, "This is not exactly what I prefer in women but you are not my type, sorry," she added.
The worried look on Yìfēi's face was replaced by fury; she sat up straight and began slapping Water Master's arms, "I am scared for you, and all you think of is!" She yelled, slapping ShuîYuê's arms, who tried to protect herself.
"Hey come on! I need to get laid, woman, and you never help me find some hot people!" Water Master replied, backing away from Wind Master, who was angry today.
"YueYue! You idiot! I'll break all your 206 bones! I'll feed them to wolves!" Wind Master threatened.
ShuîYuê nodded her head, "I know, I know,"
Xiàn Fèng appeared a second later, "Was that your scream earlier ShuîYuê?" He asked looking down at her bruised hands.
"Hmmmm, maybe? maybe not?" Water Master suggested playfully.
Xiàn Fèng rolled his eyes as Earth Master went to examine the dead bodies; the Crown prince was standing at the back, a relieved look on his face, "Your Highness!" Earth Master called; he blinked his eyes before walking over to Earth Master, "Only one of them was a cultivator. All the rest are humans," Shù Zìrán reported; GuānYû nodded his head.
"We need to take these bodies back; they will be sent to the royal morticians to be checked," the Crown Prince responded; Earth Master stood up quickly.
"I'll go get guards," she said ready to leave.
"Earth Master, take Miss Yinsu with you, she seems a bit startled," GuānYû told glancing at Miss Ping who was staring at the dead bodies with a blank look on her face, Earth Master nodded her head, and took Miss Pong with her, hurrying to get guards to the forest to gain back Crown Prince's trust.
Wind Master was threatening, scolding and also worrying over Water Master at the same time. Crown Prince walked over to them, Water Master appeared utterly bored with Wind Master's threats and chiding, she sighed averting her gaze from Yìfēi to Crown Prince who was startled a little, he blinked his eyes and pretended to be observing the corpses from far away, and turned around with a furious blush on his cheeks.
'Water Master caught you staring at her, how embarrassing!' He thought feeling the heat rise on his face.
"You are always getting injured!" Yìfēi fumed, glaring at her best friend, who was staring at some insects curiously, "YueYue!" She snapped and Water Master flinched a little before turning to face Yìfēi with her full undivided attention.
"Yìfēi, me getting injured at this point is a soulmate thing," ShuîYuê replied to Yìfēi's scolding, " It happens naturally, we can't stop it, it's fate," Water Master added in a heavy voice as Xiàn Fèng snickered at the crossed look on Wind Master's face, Yìfēi huffed before she walked away.
