Chapter 9
A/N: The song Meant To Be Yours appears in this chapter. The lyrics will be in italics, as having it appear sung more than spoken seemed more fitting for the song in question.

After the hospital visit, Veronica then made her way home. She, Chandler and Jason had spent a good couple of hours talking to one another about how to proceed with the current situation, namely Veronica figuring out how to rekindle her friendship, and maybe later her relationship, with Jasmine. However, as she neared her house, Veronica suddenly got a sinking feeling in her stomach, as though something was about to go very wrong. Her fears were proven correct when she entered the house and saw her parents waiting for her, both looking concerned.
"Where have you been?" Mr Sawyer asked.
"We've been worried sick. Your friend, Jasmine Dean, stopped by. She told us everything." Mrs Sawyer said.
"Everything?" Veronica questioned uneasily, unable to stop the feeling of dread rising within her.
"Your depression, your thoughts of suicide." Mr Sawyer answered.
"She even showed us your copy of Moby Dick." Mrs Sawyer said, showing the book in question. With a start, Veronica recognised it as Duke's copy of Moby Dick, and Jasmine's words from a few days ago rang through her mind. Fearing the worst, Veronica took the book and opened it, seeing that several passages were underlined and annotated within the book in an almost perfect imitation of her own handwriting.
"This is not my handwriting!" Veronica said.
"I've been on the phone all morning. There's a doctor in Cleveland, and we'd like you to talk with him." Mrs Sawyer said.
"What kind of doctor?" Veronica asked.
"Psychiatric." Mr Sawyer answered, which earned him a reprimand from Mrs Sawyer.
"You're sending me to a shrink?!" Veronica questioned incredulously.
"There's no shame in getting some help." Mrs Sawyer said.
"I am not the problem!" Veronica exclaimed, before she ran upstairs to her room. Once she was in there, she felt overwhelmed about the whole thing, and now knew why she'd had that sinking feeling prior to arriving home. However, a noise outside caught her attention, and Veronica had a guess as to who it might be. Instead of waiting, Veronica instead hid inside her closet, closing the door just as she heard her bedroom window opening.
"Knock, knock. Sorry to come in through the window. Dreadful etiquette, I know." Jasmine spoke, climbing in through the window.
"Get out of my house!" Veronica exclaimed. Jasmine gave a light chuckle as she realised where Veronica's voice was coming from.
"Hiding in the closet? Aw, come on. Unlock the door." Jasmine said.
"I'll scream, and my parents will call the police!" Veronica said.
"All is forgiven, baby. I hope you're ready. You're my date to the pep rally tomorrow." Jasmine said, and Veronica noted that the other girl seemed a little too happy about that.
"What? Why?" Veronica questioned.
"Our classmates thought they were signing a petition. Ha! You gotta come out here and see what they really signed!" Jasmine answered, ripping off a piece of paper from the petition in her hands to reveal what was really written there. The way she spoke only made Veronica feel all the more terrified. She'd never heard Jasmine sound this way before. She sounded gleeful, but in a highly sadistic manner.
"You chucked me out like I was trash, for that you should be dead... but, but, but, then it hit me like a flash: What if high school went away instead? Those assholes are the key, they're keeping you away from me, they made you blind, messed up your mind, but I can set you free! You left me and I fell apart, I punched the wall and cried... bam, bam, bam! Then I found you changed my heart and set loose all that truthful shit inside, and so I built a bomb. Tonight our school is Vietnam! Let's guarantee they'll never see their senior prom! I was meant to be yours! We were meant to be one! Don't give up on me now! Finish what we've begun! I was meant to be yours! So when the high school gym goes boom with everyone inside... pkhw, pkhw, pkhw! In the rubble of their tomb, we'll plant this note explaining why they died! "We, the students of Westerburg High, will die! Our burnt bodies may finally get through to you.Your society churns out slaves and blanks, no thanks. Signed, the students of Westerburg High. Goodbye!". We'll watch the smoke pour out the doors, bring marshmallows, we'll make s'mores. We can smile and cuddle while the fire roars! I was meant to be yours, we were meant to be one. I can't take it alone, finish what we've begun. You were meant to be mine, I am all that you need! You carved open my heart, can't just leave me to bleed!" Veronica hadn't thought it was possible to be more terrified than she already was, but this was proving her wrong. She could hardly believe that this was the same Jasmine she had fallen in love with. This was almost the complete opposite of the girl she once knew. She couldn't help but wonder if she had been what had triggered Jasmine's current mental state. But could their breakup really have caused it to become this bad, or was there another underlying cause to it that she hadn't figured out yet. But she knew she had to do something, no matter how drastic the action might be. Meanwhile, Jasmine had taken her gun from her pocket and was now holding it, having stowed the petition into the pocket of her trenchcoat.
"Veronica, open the, open the door, please. Veronica, open the door. Veronica, can we not fight anymore, please. Can we not fight anymore? Veronica, sure, you're scared, I've been there! I can set you free! Veronica, don't make me come in there, I'm gonna count to three! One, two, fuck it!" Jasmine exclaimed, having had enough at this point. She went over to the closet and proceeded to kick the door open, only to stumble back at the sight that greeted her within. Jasmine fell to her knees upon seeing Veronica hanging from one of the railings, unmoving and not breathing. A tremendous wave of guilt came crashing over the dark-haired girl. She had never meant for things to go this far, but now there was nothing she could do. One of the last remaining people she loved was gone.
"Oh, god! Veronica, no, please don't leave me alone. You were all I could trust. I can't do this alone. Still I will if I must!" Jasmine said, her resolve hardening. In her mind, although not the correct scenario, most of those at Westerburg had driven Veronica away from her and to this. Ignoring the small part of her mind that was telling her that this whole mess was her own fault, Jasmine got to her feet. She didn't have time to question her own sanity, not at this point.
"Veronica, I made you a snack. Veronica?" Mrs Sawyer's voice could then be heard. Jasmine turned to look at the door, and quickly realised that the wrong conclusion could be reached if Mrs Sawyer saw her there. So she quickly ran to the window and climbed out, vanishing into the night. Veronica had heard the retreating footsteps, but was then startled by the sound of her mother screaming, so quickly freed herself from her makeshift noose.
"Mom, I'm fine! I'm sorry! See, it's a joke!" Veronica exclaimed.
"It's not funny." Mrs Sawyer said. It took a few minutes before Mrs Sawyer calmed down enough and left the room. Veronica, on the other hand, was not as calm. She knew she had to stop Jasmine from blowing up the school at the pep rally tomorrow. The only problem was that she had no idea how she was going to do it.
