Chapter 1

3rd Person P.O.V

The rising sun marked the start of a new day. For most people, this was a good thing. But that particular day was not looking to be a good one. At least, not according to 17 year old Jasmine Dean. She had recently moved to Sherwood, Ohio with her father, Big Bud Dean, and had been enrolled at Westerburg High School. The only downside to this was that it was just over three weeks into the new school year, so people were going to immediately know she was new. She reluctantly rolled out of bed and got ready for the day. Once she was ready, she grabbed her things and left the house, getting on her motorbike and riding to Westerburg High. Once there, she made sure to lock her motorbike in place, before heading inside the school to get her schedule and locker combination from the principal, and then went to find her locker. Her aim was to just ignore everyone else. She never made the effort to learn people's names or remember their faces, since it was just a waste of time, and also because she'd be forced to move schools again in a mere six weeks or so. This was the reason she had attended ten high schools in the past two years. Once she'd got what she needed, she decided to try and find the cafeteria. She'd missed the first few classes anyway, so she may as well get some reading time in. She found a quiet table in the corner, and sat down there before opening her book, which was The Catcher In The Rye. About an hour later, according to the clock that hung above the cafeteria door, the bell rang to signal lunchtime. Jasmine was quick to get lunch, before retreating back to her corner and continued reading while she ate her lunch. Though her attention was briefly diverted by a group of girls walking into the cafeteria. The leader was dressed in red, while the three girls behind her were dressed in green, yellow and blue respectively, although Jasmine noticed that the girl dressed in blue looked more than a little uncomfortable, particularly when people started staring at the group. She also heard a few names being whispered. It took a few minutes, but Jasmine was able to piece together that the girls dressed in red, green and yellow were Heather Chandler, Heather Duke and Heather McNamara, respectively. And it seemed the girl dressed in blue was named Veronica Sawyer.

"Popular clique, definitely. Although the girl in blue must be a recent addition, but not very comfortable with the stares. Most likely quite low on the social food chain prior to being elevated to popular girl. That's quite a jump." Jasmine said quietly to herself, turning the page of her book. She had barely got more than a few pages further when a loud commotion occurred. She briefly glanced over to see the three Heathers were the source of the noise and making Veronica look extremely uncomfortable, but also clearly pulling some sort of prank on a girl wearing a pink unicorn sweater. But she still listened in while reading, and once it looked like the trio had finished and walked away, Jasmine got out of her seat and walked over to where Veronica was standing.

"You shouldn't have bowed down to the swatchdogs and Diet Coke heads. They're gonna crush that girl." Jasmine remarked without looking up from her book.

"I'm sorry, what?" Jasmine heard Veronica ask, so she turned to look at her. Now that she got a closer look at her, Jasmine could tell that Veronica was definitely not the average popular girl, but also that she was quite cute.

"You've clearly got a soul. You just need to work harder keeping it clean. We're all born marked for evil." Jasmine answered, turning to walk away again.

"Okay, don't quote Baudelaire at me and then walk away. Excuse me? I didn't catch your name." Veronica said. At this, Jasmine simply gave a smirk in response.

"I didn't throw it." Jasmine responded, before walking away, not seeing Veronica's reaction. Veronica, however, didn't know how to react. This mysterious yet also cute newcomer had clearly only been at Westerburg High for a day, yet she acted like she'd been here for her entire time at high school. She was debating going over to talk to her again, but stopped when she saw Kurt Kelly and Ram Sweeney, the school's resident jocks, get there first.

"Hey, sweetheart. What did your girlfriend say when you told her you were moving to Sherwood, Ohio?" Kurt asked loudly, gaining the attention of everyone else in the cafeteria.

"My buddy Kurt asked you a question." Ram chipped in.

"Hey Ram, doesn't this cafeteria have a no-fags-allowed rule?" Kurt asked. Jasmine placed a bookmark in her book and closed it, before turning to look at Kurt.

"I don't know what your problem is, but I bet it's really hard for you to pronounce." Jasmine responded, giving a light smirk. This response earned a lot of gasps and shocked looks from the rest of the student body.

"Hold her arms!" Kurt said to Ram, who quickly did so. However, Veronica watched in shock as Jasmine used her book to block Kurt's punch, and then promptly hitting him in the face with it, before turning and doing the same thing to Ram, which forced him to let go. Jasmine then threw her book to the side, where it was caught by the closest student, before kicking Kurt in the most painful place possible for a guy to get hit, causing him to drop to the ground. She then turned back around and punched Ram in the face when he tried to lunge at her, which sent him down. Kurt got back up and attempted to throw a punch, but Jasmine simply leaned back so that it missed her, and took the opportunity when Kurt stumbled forward to grab his head and headbutt him three times, before pushing him to the ground again. The other students were still sitting there in stunned silence, but Jasmine seemed to take no notice of this as she pushed her hair out of her face, before reclaiming her book and walking out of the cafeteria like nothing had happened. Veronica was now feeling very conflicted as strange new feelings arose within her, and she had no idea what it meant.
