Freak Show
The night was quiet at Camp Half-Blood, the only sounds were the howling wind and the growling of monsters in the forest. Everyone seemed to be asleep but one boy laid awake, he was resting on his back while starring up at the ceiling of his almost empty cabin. His sea green eyes glistened in the silver light of the moon that cast through the windows. The boy sighed and sat up in his bunk, looking around the empty cabin. He didn't like the silence, especially when he couldn't get to sleep. Suddenly a sharp growl erupted from the forest causing him to jump slightly, gods I have to get used to that, he thought.
More growls swelled in the night, all in unison, creating one thunderous noise. The boy jumped out of his bed and bolted out of the cabin, other campers were already out of their cabins looking toward the forest. A blonde guy hurried out of the Hermes cabin and came in front of all the gathered campers, followed closely by a horse-man. The centaur leaned close to the child of Hermes and whispered something in his ear before taking off toward the forest.
"Alright campers!" The blonde shouted over the growl "I need some volunteers to go into the forest!"
Many of the Ares and Athena cabin raised their hands, a certain blonde girl from the Athena cabin walked to the front while the son of Hermes smiled "Annabeth, nice for you to volunteer."
The daughter of Athena blushed slightly but it was so dark out no one noticed, except the green eyed boy. The blonde leader turned to him "Percy? Would you like to come? It would do you some good practice."
The boy hesitated but then nodded, he was still getting used to things around here.
"Good! Now you and Annabeth go suit up." The blonde then turned his attention back to the camper volunteers.
Percy looked at Annabeth and smiled while she just rolled her eyes and started to walk in the way of the armory without him.
"Hey wait up!" The boy had to sprint to catch up and when he did he was breathing hard. "You know when someone ask you to wait up the nice thing to do is--."
"Did I ever say I was nice?" She cut in.
"Well, no but--."
"So you just assumed I was nice since I was the one who nursed you back to heal, showed you around camp, and picked you for my team for capture the flag?"
"Well ya, but--."
"If you haven't noticed, Percy, I'm a daughter of Athena and you are a son of Poseidon. Our parents are rivals so there for we are too, now will you stop bothering me?"
Percy slowed a bit and sighed "For just once can we put aside our parents rivalry and be friends for a minute or two?"
"Oh looks like someone used a big word, rivalry. Did it hurt your pea-brain?" Annabeth sneered.
"Look, I just want to fit in for once and now I find out even in my own kind I'm a freak. It would help to have a friend or two."
"Well I'm sure the monsters in that forest would be delighted to be your friend, maybe you should make friends with a hell-hound or better yet a hydra."
"I get the feeling you don't like me very much..."
"Oh really? What gave you that impression?"
"No need to be sarcastic, it's just an observation."
"Oooo, another big word!"
"Will you two stop flirting and get suited up!" Came a feminine, but painfully familiar, growl. Clarisse shouldered her way between the two and kept walking. "Well?"
The two grumbled something that sounded like 'we aren't flirting!' and continued toward the armory. The ground began to shake making everyone fall to the ground, holding on to anything for dear life.
"What the--?"
"We don't know, Percy!"
"I was just asking!"
"Shut up, both of you! You can flirt later!"
Percy and Annabeth looked as if they were about the throw up "WE ARN'T FLIRTING!"
Everyone closed there eyes tightly, waiting for to earthquake to be over. It felt like decades. Suddenly everything was still and eerily quiet. The thunderous growl was gone, there was no sound of monsters in the forest, no birds in the trees, nothing. No one dared to opened their eyes, it was just too still, too quiet. The acidity smell of smoke filled Percy's nostrils making him cough into the ground, something light and flaky swirled around his face as he did this. His hands weren't gripping grass anymore, it felt more like sand, but also like burnt paper. Finally he got the nerve to opened his eyes, then he did his heart went to his throat "Oh my gods..." He breathed.
Next to him both Annabeth and Clarisse were still curled up as was everyone in the camp. What was left of camp. They were in a charred forest of collapsed buildings and trees, the forest were almost completely gone, Camp Half-Blood had turned to rubble, and an ash blanket coated the ground like black snow. Percy leaned over to Annabeth and shook her shoulder "A-Annabeth, you need to see this."
The daughter of Athena and the daughter of Ares slowly looked up and gasped. Annabeth scrambled to her feet, looking around hastily "WHAT HAPPENED HERE?!"
"How are we supposed to know, Princess?" Clarisse growled.
Annabeth glared "Go to the crows!"
Clarisse got to her feet and looked as if she was about to charge, but Percy placed himself between them "Okay, everyone calm down."
"Move it Prissy!" Clarisse snapped.
Percy glared "Don't call me Prissy!"
"I can call you whatever I want!"
"Guys!" Annabeth shouted "Enough."
The two growled but stopped arguing...for now.
"Okay, so lets try to figure this out--."
"Annabeth!" Call a voice behind them, it was Luke. He caught up with them and skid to a stop "You guys okay?"
"Ya, just a little...freaked out." Percy replied.
Luke nodded "Okay, lets get back to the others."
The trio nodded and followed Luke toward the rest of the campers. Annabeth came up beside the son of Hermes and started talking about what happened, trying to figure it out. While Clarisse trudged ahead of all of them, Percy lagged behind, studying their obliterated home.
"You!" Hissed a voice from within one of the cabin rubble, Percy couldn't tell which cabin, they were all unrecognizable. He turned to the cabin the voice had came and pointed to himself in question.
"Yes you, Kelp Head! Now get over here!"
Percy walked over to the collapsed cabin and crouched down next to a long slit between two wood boards. Two electric blue eyes starred back at him, making him jump back a little.
"Oh don't act so afraid, Kelp-for-Brains! Just come closer."
"How do you know who I am? Who are you?"
"I'll be asking the questions here. What major event happened before you went to sleep last night?"
"Why do you need--."
"Answer the question, Percy!"
"I was claimed by my father, Poseidon! Jeez!"
The voiced sighed "Thank you, now where are the others of Camp Half-Blood?"
"In the U of cabins, right behind you."
"Okay now wait right there."
"Why do I need--?"
"Just do it!"
"Alright, alright! Honestly you're like Annabeth!"
The piercing blue eyes starred at him in narrow slits "I'll take that as a complement."
"Whatever floats your boat."
A few minutes later a punk girl with spiky hair came from around the broken down cabin, she had a silver crown which oddly matched the Artemis cabin. She smiled at him "Hello Perce, long time no see?"
"So how do you know me?" The son of Poseidon asked.
"We'll get to that later." The Punk Girl replied. "But right now we need to gather with the rest of the campers. We have much to discuss." She held out her hand for him to shake "I'm Thalia by the way. Thalia Grace, daughter of Zeus."
