Chapter 3: Reese Conley

"The time has come to turn your heart
into a temple of fire."
-Rumi

Oh my goodness, I'm on fire!

I swatted at myself, trying to extinguish the fire though it knew it would not do anything. I ran around the tree like a headless chicken. Not even noticing that the girl did not move and was just watching me.

"You better get away from that tree or you will set it on fire. This is a notional park, that means you cannot damage or remove any price of it," the girl said in an impassive tone.

That was the question she was asking, really? The flames were licking my skin and it hurt. I needed to cool down. I needed to find water.

"Water. I need water," I told her as I ran past her in another regulation around the tree. She just looked at me with her dead cold gaze.

"I don't have water, but the park does have a lake."

"That's good." I passed her again. "Can you lead me there?" My voice boomed around catching the attention of a few people. The sound of gasps could be faintly heard.

"Follow me." Her commanding voice cut through all of the stares and gasps as people watched me as the girl walked slowly. What is wrong with her? Why isn't she shaken, surprised, or whatever emotion someone would feel when seeing someone on fire? This was not the first time that Reese had been engulfed in flames but this was the longest. He would definitely have an element because of the fiasco.

"Okay," was the only thing I could say as I chased after her. We ran through the fields of the park. I had never been to this park before and did not realize how big it was. As we reached the top of a hill I saw it, the lake that this girl was leading me to.

I looked toward her and we caught each other's eyes. She had beatiful pastel blue eyes as light blue as the polar ice caps, but they looked dead, as if the shine was taken out of them. She blinked and the moment ended.

"Run." Her voice was held no urgency, but I didn't need any. I ran fastest towards the lake, also grumbling down the green rolling hill. My shirt was burning as the fake wind tried to kill the flames.

My shirt is definitely going to be ruined after this whole ordeal. Hopefully I won't substain that bad of burns.

Even though my shirt was engulfed in flames, my body didn't hurt. I was practically born on fire so fire or hot things never really hurt me, but if I received a burn on my body, it would get tender and painful to the touch, that's why I'm still wearying of the rules because I can still die from my heart.

I leaped into the lake, hugging my knees as I form a perfect cannonball. I had taken up light swimming as a way to cool myself down. The water splashed as my body was finally free from the open flames. I swam around the lake, doing a backflip before swimming up to the surface to take a well deserved breath of reielf.

The girl was standing on an old wooden harbor that was built. It had started to rot around the thick logs, but it looked stable enough for someone to stand or sit on it.

I freestyle swam over to her and rest my tanned forearms on the harbor. Dark ugly holes were in my now wet shirt. I probably looked very unappealing, but I could not help but laugh.

The girl looked at my face, her face never changing from its resting position. "Are you okay?"
