"Rasbi, why do I have to wear this again?" Eloise- or Soup, as her close friends know her- sighed as her handmaiden, Rasbi, fussed with her hair, red horns gleaming in the sun. "You know very well the king doesn't like messiness when you visit him, your highness." "Rasbi, please don't call me that, We've known each other for years." "I apologize your hig- I mean Soup." Soup smiled, standing up and doing a small spin so the skirt of her lime green dress twirled with her. "So, how do I look?" "As wonderful as always Eloise." Rasbi gave her a small smile. "Good luck." "With my luck, I'm going to need it." Soup sighed before giving the halfing a wave goodbye and stepping into the hallway, walking through the quiet castle towards the throne room.
As the doors grew closer, her hands started to twist together out of habit. Her father only ever called her when she had to go to another boring meeting- or when she messed up one of those meetings. Taking a deep breath, she eased the door open, gently closing it behind her before she turned towards the dias her father sat upon. Next to him was his advisor, Will, who gave her a little smile as she curtsied.
"My daughter," he rose from his seat, gesturing for Will to leave. They obeyed, pausing to give her a thumbs up before quietly slipping out the door. "I understand that you're most likely confused right now-" "Dad," Soup interrupted. "Please just talk to me like a normal person for once?" His smile softened. "Very well then." He took a step forward. "I'll skip the long, boring lecture then. I've decided to hire a guard for you."
What.
"What?!"
"Eloise, please listen-" "Why do I need a guard? You know very well I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself!" Soup fumed. The king sighed. "I knew this would happen- Sweetheart, I know you can. But you are still the princess, and that makes you vulnerable. It would make me feel better about your safety while I'm away." "While you're away- You're leaving again?" "Eloise, you know I am the king. I have duties to my people." Her father said sternly. "But you can't just leave every other week for months! Last time, you were gone for two months! Magic thought you were dead!" "Eloise, this is not up for debate." "But-" "Eloise." Soup stopped. The king sighed.
"Look, I know it's hard for you, with your duties and everything. Please, just- listen to me on this, for once." Soup shuffled her feet sheepishly. She nodded. "Thank you." He glanced behind her. "Oh, there she is now." Soup turned at the sound of footsteps.
Behind her with a hand on the doorknob was a brunette dressed in a blue turtleneck, blond bangs hanging her face. She glanced around the room, seemingly curious.
"Ah, there you are. Eloise," He turned to her. "This is Bek. She will be your guard." She bowed, waving as she smiled. Soup just glared, causing her smile to droop and for her to stuff her hands in her pockets. "You don't look like a guard." "Well, she starts work tomorrow. this is just for you to meet her." He checked his watch. "Ah, and now I must leave you two be. Im sure you two will get along." He gave them a smile, one which Bek reluctantly returned. He then turned for the door, leaving before Soup could say another word and leaving the two in silence.
Bek was the first to speak up. "Well Your Highness, shall we-" "Don't." She held up her hand as Bek's face contorted in confusion. "You, are only here because my father finds me incompetent. Please leave." "Your Highness, just because you're the princess does not mean you can talk to me like that." Soup looked at her in surprise. "And for the record, I'm only here because this was my only option. But fine, I'll get out of your hair." Bek spat, spinning and stalking towards the door before she thought better of it, turning to Soup and bowing. "Your Highness." That didn't stop her from slamming the door behind her, leaving Soup alone with the empty throne. She glanced at it for a moment, before following behind the long-gone knight.
