The next morning Prerna had her official interview with Mr. Bajaj. He noticed that she had only graduated from a small university, but her common sense and smarts made up for it. He reviewed the salary with her and they signed the needed documents before Prerna went to her assigned department for a tour.
Some of the women in the department whispered about Prerna's desi look, but Prerna ignored them. The day was spent in housekeeping and onboarding, then after, Prerna and Sonia went to the market for shopping.
Nisha had gone to the market to shop. It has been just over a month since she had arrived in Mumbai. She was staying at some girls hostel her Di had found and paid for. Nisha had recently gotten her first salary and went out to buy things.
She was looking through an open market when she heard a child crying nearby. He was asking for his mother in Bengali. Nisha turned to just kindly smile at the kid, but she stumbled into something a bit more serious. A man was holding the kid's arm and not really paying attention. He yelled at the boy to stay sitting on the stool while he went inside. Nisha went over to the shop the kid was near, and acted like she was looking at the things.
"Aapki mumma kahan hain?" She asked in Bengali.
"Mama yahan nahi hai. Woh park mein thi," the boy replied.
Nisha was shocked as the situation slowly dawned on her. "Aap kiske saath ho?" She asked to confirm her suspicions.
"Pata nahi. Mujhe mumma chahiye!"
Nisha swore in her mind. She couldn't let the man take the kid. "Aap mere saath aoge? Hum police uncle ko dhundte hai, woh aapko mumma ke paas le jayein ge."
The boy wiped his face and nodded. Nisha double checked if the man was nearby, and took the kid's hand and began walking away. In her other hand, she got her phone and started dialing the police number.
"Arre! Yahan se baccha kahaan gaya!?" Nisha heard a man's voice screamed from behind. She hoped the crowd was big enough to hide her so she didn't run. They had just gotten near the gate of the market when the man came in front of them and spotted the kid. He pointed at her and started running. Nisha picked up the kid and started running.
"Bachao! Yeh mere bachhe ko kidnap karne ki koshish kar raha hai!" Nisha screamed as she ran past the gate. She kept running, and went inside a nearby building. It was just recently built, so it was still empty. There was no one inside except for her... and the man. She ran up floors, trying to get away from the guy.
On the third or some floor, Nisha put the kid down as she was getting tired. "Mein aapko yahaan rakh rahi hoon. Aap na, bilkul, aik dum chup, thik hai?" She placed a finger on her lips and the kid nodded and followed. "Koi noise nahi, accha. Samjho hum hide and seek khel rahe hai, yeah? Bilkul chup. Main jaungi aur noise bajao gi, phir wo mere piche ayega or aapke paas nahi, okay?" The kid nodded and Nisha kissed his head before leaving. She ran far away from the kid and started purposely being loud so the man would come after her.
The kid was hiding behind the door when another man came running in. The man looked around the room, then pushed his jacket back and put his hands on his belt. The kid saw the police badge on the man's belt and ran out, quietly hugging him.
The man was startled, but he stayed standing and knelt down by the kid. "Ghabrao nahi, main police wala hoon. Abh koi danger nahi hai." He consoled the kid "Aapke piche badman tha?" The kid nodded.
"Is building mein hai?"
The kid nodded again. "Woh acchi didi ke picche gaya hai."
The policeman hugged the kid and lead him down the stairs where a pair of suited policemen were coming up. He handed them the kid and went looking for the lady.
Nisha could hear the kidnapper close behind her and kept running upstairs. Eventually, she ran down a hall and went inside a room, hiding in a closet after she closed the door. A minute later, the door opened again and the kidnapper came in, huffing. He looked around the room and kicked over the desks and opened other doors to try and catch her.
He was just outside her closet door when another man tackled him from the side. Nisha watched as the new man began beating the kidnapper, but the kidnapper got up and ran out. The new man chased after him.
Nisha slowly got out of the closet and checked the coast before running back down. She checked the room where she left the kid but he wasn't there. Nisha started to panic and ran downstairs. The entry room was empty so Nisha ran outside. She saw a couple of police vans outside, and saw the kid talking to a policewoman. She finally sighed in relief knowing the kid was safe. The kid saw her and smiled, but Nisha put a finger on her lips and waved goodbye. The kid waved back and before the policewoman could turn, she was gone.
The policeman caught up with the kidnapper as he fell down the stairs. He grabbed him by the back of his collar and beat him all the way down to the police vans. The suited police saw him and ran to him. They took the criminal from him and pushed him to the van while the policeman went to the kid.
"Sir, baccha Assam se hai. Ma ke saath park mein tha ke kissi ne utha liya."
"Parents ka naam bataya isne?"
"Ji sir. His father works in a hotel in the city. Hum Assam ki police se connect kar rahe hai, sir."
"Good job, officer Lona. Jabh tak yeh ghar nahi pohonchta yeh aapke saath rahe ga."
"Ji, sir. Lekin good job to aapko milni chahiye. Aapne us kidnapper ko pakda. Abh shayad koi inside information mil sake."
"I hope so. Phir finally hum is kidnapping ring ko band kar sakein ge." He replied to the officer, then turned his attention to the kid.
"Jo aunty aapke saath thi, woh aapki mumma nahi thi?" He asked in Bengali.
The boy shook his head. "Woh acchi didi thi. Usne kaha hum police uncle ko dhondein ge. Phir maine aapko dekha."
"Good boy," the man smiled and messed the kid's hair.
"Toh abhi didi kahan gayi? Humein unka thank you karna chahiye."
"Woh chali gayi."
"Chali gayi?"
"Haan. Usne aise kiya aur aise kiya aur phir chali gayi," the boy waved and blew a kiss.
The policeman laughed and stood up. He asked Lona to get a description of the woman from the kid so they could find her. He then recalled 15 minutes ago when he had seen her running past him, screaming. She was turned away from him, her hair blocking her face.
He was thinking when someone called out to him.
"ACP Sheikh sir!" An officer ran up to him.
"Kya hua?" Sheikh responded.
"Aapko commissioner sir bula rahe hain."
Sheikh nodded. "Let's go," he went and got in the car, waving at the kid as he passed.
Good job, didi.
