Her eyes locked with mine, and I saw her look down at her book again. 'The Darkest Hour', I think, if I know my Warriors books right.
I guess asking Mrs. Nightstar had worked.
But Moon seemed upset, probably because she hadn't been pared with Kinkajou. I knew that they were friends, I also knew that she didn't like me very much, which I hated.
I mean, I guess I am a bit scary, but it can't be so bad that my classmate doesn't want to work with me.
Unless it is, I thought, and she hates me and Icicle equally.
Icicle was always picking on Moon, taking her lunch money, throwing food or trash at her, you name it. It always pissed me off. Once, Icicle pulled Moon's hair, which had made Moon stumble backwards so hard she'd fallen, which had infuriated me.
So, while Kinkajou had been helping her up, I'd grabbed my sister by the hair and dragged her off to lunch.
She'd complained to Mom and Dad about it, and I'd ended up grounded, Icicle had been left off the hook because she was the favorite, they could care less about me, I knew that, the only times they ever showed up to something that I was apart of was when Icicle and I were in choir last year. She'd ended up hating the class and whined to our parents. Long story short, Dad bribed the school into not giving her any kind of music class.
I was pulled from my thoughts by the sudden ring of the bell, I stood up and saw Moon stop at Mrs. Nightstar's desk, talking in her sweet quiet voice. Although I couldn't hear, I had a sinking feeling she was asking our teacher to give her a differint partner. I had no idea who could ever say no to those big, beautiful brown eyes of hers, that, by the looks of them, were slightly glossy with tears.
Did she really not want to work with me that badly? Jeez, she really must not like me.
I sucked in a breath of air and walked over.
"Hey Moon," I greeted, and nodded to our math teacher. "Sooo, uh, I guess we're supposed to work on this project sometime soon, what if I come to your place after school and we can work on it together there?"
She fidgeted cutely with the hem of her hoodie and whispered something, I could barely here her, but I managed to catch an "I guess" in her mumbling.
"Alright, do you take the bus or get a ride?"
"Bus." Came her mutter.
"Alright, which one is it and I'll take that one."
"Two-forty-five." She uttered.
"Okie dokie, see yah then. Bye Mrs. Nightstar." I waved to my teacher as I walked backwards out of the room.
I headed down the hall towards the cafeteria, I saw Icicle with her little friend group, Burn and Blister St. Bitches, okay I'm kidding its actually St. Brewer, and Scarlet Jeffersen. I walked past them and into the lunch line and tapped my friend's shoulder.
Carnelian spun around, looking ready to spit something bitchy, then realized it was me and seemed to calm down.
"Oh," she says, letting out a breath of air, "it's just you. Why the hell did you do that?"
"All I did was tap your shoulder," I shrugged.
"Yeah, with no 'hi, hello,' or 'hey Carnelian it's Winter!' instead you choose to scare the shit outta me." She huffed.
"Well I mean . . . your reaction is pretty funny." I grabbed a hotdog, and so did she, i grabbed a water from the cooler, while she grabbed a Dr. Pepper. Then we both grabbed our respective chips (potato for me and Deritos for her) and handed the cashier fifteen dollars each.
"How nice." Carnelian grumbled.
I elbowed her playfully and sat down at an empty table. "Hey, it's just a joke! Either way, how was telling your parents about . . . you know."
"It was a fail." She sighed.
She'd been trying for the past year now to come out to her parents as a lesbian, but has been failing misrebly to do so. I patted her shoulder. "You'll get there."
"But what if I don't?" She asked, looking up at me with worried eyes. "It took me so long to even tell you, and we've been friends since second grade! Meanwhile I've only known my adoptive parents for a couple years."
"Hey, chill, you'll be fine." I said. "I get you want to, but maybe you're not ready to tell them you like girls. It's okay if you're not."
"But I want them to know so badly. But it's just so hard to tell them." She sighed, then groaned in frustration at herself.
"Welp, I don't really know what to say." I shrugged.
"Yeah . . ." she murmered, then looked up at me. "Hey, we have a math project, who's your partner?"
"Uh . . ." my face grew warmer and a sudden smirk arose on her face.
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh." She grinned, popping a chip into her mouth. "It's Moon."
"Um-"
She snickered at me and ate another chip. "Are you serious? Oh my God your face is priceless!"
"Very funny." I mumbled as she struggled to catch her breath through her laughter. A few heads turned and she just gave them her usual "you got a problem bitch?" look and they returned to their conversations.
"Anyways," she continued, "I'm SO coming over with you, she's friends with Kinkajou, isn't she? Those two are always together."
"Yeah, why, what are you trying to do?" I smirked.
"None of your buisness," Carnelian shrugged, now starting to eat her hotdog.
"Fine," I rolled my eyes, "I'll ask, I'm going to her place anyways."
"Oooooh meeting her parents already?" My friend snickered.
"Shut up," I say, biting into a potato chip.
