Chapter 8

Whenever you walked by Urainia's obelisk, you saw her surrounded by star spirits. They didn't have as much size variation as the shadow spirits, closer to Urainia's height. But they certainly had lots of color variation, from deep purple to glowing silver.

Whenever a shadow spirit walked by, they were ambushed by at least five star spirits with questions and hugs. Urainia would usually pull them off and apologize to the poor soul.

After numerous complaints from all ranks of his soldiers, Umbrum went to talk to Urainia.

Urainia was sitting, or rather floating, in front of her obelisk, etching something onto a slab. The star spirits that surrounded her did the same.

Then some star spirits ambushed him from behind with their questions.

"Why do you have horns?"

"Why do you wear that hood all the time?"

"How old are you?"

Startled, he shoved them all away and appeared next to Urainia.

"We need to talk about your servants."

Urainia tilted her head in response.

"They're not servants, they're my friends. I made them specifically to keep me company. Unlike you, it seems."

Umbrum got defensive at this jab at this character. "I did NOT create the shadows to serve me! They serve me willingly!"

Urainia stepped back, and Astera came to see her.

"Is he bothering you, Urainia?"

"Not right now. Don't worry, I can take him on."

Astera nodded, and walked away.

Urainia addressed Umbrum again. "You don't need to be so touchy."

" 'Touchy'? You just said that the only reason I made my creatures was for them to serve me."

"I'm sorry, Umbrum. I shouldn't have said that."

Umbrum's expression hardened. "You're forgiven. Put up a fence or something around your obelisk so that your creations don't bother mine."

Urainia stood up. "You're right! Thanks for the idea!"

"Then my work here is done."

As Umbrum turned away, Urainia gripped his arm.

"Wait,"

Umbrum turned to face her. Even though they were the same height, Umbrum was still an intimidating presence.

Urainia finished her sentence."Don't go yet, I've got some things to show you."

Umbrum blinked. "I'll stay, since it seems important to you."

Urainia and the star spirits showed Umbrum the slabs they were etching on. It was a writing system that Urainia made.

"Each symbol represents a specific sound, and you combine them to make words."

Umbrum took a slab and traced the ornate, swirling symbols with his fingers. He was in awe of this invention, seeing the endless potential it held. Just like its inventor.

"Can you teach me how to do this?" he asked, looking towards Urainia.

"Of course!" She gave him a soft stone slab and a sharp, short stick to write it on.

Umbrum's writing was uneven and blocky, a far cry from the clean, ornate lines of the letters. He broke the slab in frustration.

Urainia was shaken by this. She didn't think that her system would cause much stress."I'll get to simplifying the characters..."

"Don't. It's probably my fault that it looks like shit." His tone was partly humorous, meant to come across as self-deprecating, but all that Urainia saw was him burying his frustration alive.

She sat next to him. "I can help you if you like. I've been thinking of making some stamps to make the process quicker."

Umbrum was surprised that Urainia was willing to help him out. Usually he had to solve his problems on his own.

"Really? Thanks, Urainia. Are you willing to teach my soldiers your system? Because I doubt I have the knowledge or patience to teach all of them."

"Of course! I'm always willing to help!"
