Chapter 43
Umbrum's temple had finished construction. It was a triangular building with a turf roof, like all the buildings in Ravenfell, but set apart by it being much taller and on the edge of the small town. There were 3 levels to it. The ground level one was the temple space, the top one was an aviary for the crows and ravens, and the bottom level was underground and dark. Perfect for Umbrum's living quarters.
Umbrum would've loved to take this opportunity to sleep all day, he hadn't done much of that for about a month, the people of Ravenfell decided to celebrate this accomplishment by throwing a massive party that night. In Umbrum's honor.
"Are you sure that I have to attend?"
Dag laughed. "Why wouldn't you?"
"I...I don't like parties."
"I'm telling you, this is nothing like those high society balls Iris and Cumulus do to show off. This is a very casual affair, mostly outside. And you at least need to have some roast boar."
"Fine, but don't force me into it."
Manx nudged Umbrum awake at sunset.
"Umbrum...godsdammnit Umbrum, wake up already!"
Umbrum got up. "Fine...I guess it's time for me to show up..."
He was still drowsy as he left the temple, and smelled something cooking. Manx smelled it too, and spotted a massive bonfire on the edge of town.
"Aren't they concerned that they might burn down all of Ravenfell with that?"
Umbrum quickly checked the wind. "No, the wind is blowing that way. Though they might end up burning the nearby forest."
"Not sure if that's any better..."
Umbrum and Manx headed to the bonfire. As they got closer, they heard music. Umbrum was excited, and his walk turned into a run.
Manx was surprised. "Umbrum? Umbrum, wait!"
Once Umbrum had arrived, the humans greeted him warmly. Dag gave Umbrum a big hug.
"I'm glad you could come." He offered him a bit of roast boar. "I see you like the music."
"Of course, how could I not?"
Manx eavesdropped on Umbrum and Dag's conversation.
"Well, since you're officially Ravenfell's god, it's time you get a cape to show your authority."
Dag asked a person nearby for the trunk, and opened it, showing Umbrum the deep blue cape.
"My aunt wove it to my specifications, the brooch I stole from Manx."
Umbrum laughed, and Manx finally had an answer for where his brooch went.
"Thanks, Dag, but I can make the brooch myself."
"Fair enough."
The rest of the night was fun, though some townsfolk found Umbrum odd, to say the least.
Meanwhile, Urainia was reading the latest letter from Umbrum. She was pleased to see that Umbrum was having a good time in Ravenfell, and it helped get her mind off of the various Lords and Ladies that wanted Leda for themselves.
