Chapter 27
Urainia, Umbrum, and their respective spirits started to roam the Earth after this. Umbrum was very preoccupied keeping all his shadows in check, and keeping his distance from the humans that were everywhere. He feared the worst.
Urainia was very sociable with all the humans she came across, as were her star spirits.
One day, while talking to an old, brown-skinned woman at the market, Urainia off-handedly mentioned that she had a sweetheart.
"Really? Is it someone I know?"
Urainia chuckled, shaking her head. "No, he prefers his space."
The old woman took a bouquet of roses from behind her. "He's a lucky god, that's for sure. Give him this to show how much you love him."
They were red, and in full bloom, their scent sweet and intoxicating.
"Roses? I've seen some growing on the Baroness' tower before. Did you take them from there?"
The old woman laughed. "Oh, no. They're very high-matencence, though."
"Thank you, Erica."
Urainia took the bouquet with her to Umbrum's tent. Umbrum was talking to Bane and Manx about a viable place to stay. They were thinking of going to the wild northern lands.
Umbrum's train of thought was interrupted by a sweet scent.
He looked up to see Urainia standing, holding a bundle of red flowers.
"Wait, Urainia. We're busy right now."
Urainia stood outside the tent for a while, until Manx and Bane left.
She peeked in. By now, she was used to low light.
"Just come in, Raina."
Urainia walked in and gave Umbrum the flowers.
"Nice flowers..."
"Thanks, they're for you."
Umbrum was surprised. "Really? Uh...I'm flattered..."
Urainia thought that Umbrum was cute whenever he got bashful. She kissed his cheek.
"Have you found a good place to stay yet?"
Umbrum regained his composure. "There's a large island up north, wild and unruled by gods. Some places are dark for part of the year, too!"
"Are there humans?"
"Some, but there's humans everywhere."
"Are you going to make an effort to socialize with them?"
Umbrum went quiet. "I'm worried that eventually, I or one of my spirits will maim a human. Or worse. And then more will hate me."
Urainia put an arm around Umbrum. "I understand your fears, but you might just end up cutting off some great connections."
"Connections? Like worshippers?"
Urainia nodded. "They'd help you relieve stress."
"Well, you're already good at doing that."
Urainia blushed, and nervously laughed. "For someone who hasn't been in a lot of relationships, you seem adept at flirting."
Umbrum blinked. "Really? I'm just telling the truth."
Urainia smiled, coy. "I love you, Umbrum."
"I love you, too."
Later, while picking wildflowers with Astera and Portia, Urainia met a goddess. She had her blue and green hair in box braids, her skin was a cool brown, stocky build, and dressed in a cottagecore sort of way.
"Are you Urainia?"
"Yes, I am. Why do you ask?"
"You've been invited to a meeting of Earth's goddesses."
"Really? Why?"
Tellulah knew the real reason: to figure her out. Umbrum had not endeared her due to his toxic blood making the mosquitoes die and the plants wither away.
But telling her that was foolish, so instead, Tellulah lied: "We're very excited to see a new goddess, and we'd all like to get to know you better."
The grin that Urainia gave her made Tellulah feel guilt.
