Ad Infinitum: A Horrifying Canceled Idea
To say that war is horrifying is an understatement. Thousands of casualties that come from the combined effort of guns, fires, chemicals, bombs, even bare hands. Nothing truly showed the terrifying and pointless misery of war more than World War 1 or also known as The Great War. Thousands of soldiers dug in trenches, dying to disease, stuck in a never ending struggle of barely gaining more than a few feet of ground. No Man's Land is infamous for having little to no survivors the moment they stepped foot in it.
With such a horrifying event that happened in real life, it's a shame we haven't gotten horror media focusing on it. World War 2 is the king of military media, leaving possible ideas for World War 1 in the dust behind it. Which is a true shame, as WW1 is such a dark event where no one was truly the hero nor the villain, just soldiers fighting for a war they had no place in. However, on May 21st of 2015, a trailer for a game known as Ad Infinitum was put on YouTube....

And HOLY SHIT does this look terrifying!
Despite showing so little this one minute trailer does so much right. The lone soldier of unknown origin running through abandoned trenches in the dark rain. Where is he running to? What is he running from? Even where he rests he isn't given a moment to breath as we see disturbingly long fingers extremely close to his head, scratching away on the tanks side. The soldier runs more and more until he finally stops, needing to breath. The second he looks up....a disturbingly tall humanoid creature is looking above him, grasping its head in its hands before standing to its full height above the trenches in what seems to be a...prayer?
So many questions ring through your mind, the main one being just what the hell was that creature and how many of them are there? Why is it tormenting this man? Sadistic pleasure? Is it hunting him? Are these creatures that come to hunt the trenches? And the final bit of the trailer where it shows a macabre image of a gear being ran in the skeletal shape of a human torso. It's all so wonderful in its realm of horror!
From the wiki it states
"Ad Infinitum is a survival horror game focused on a family drama that is set in a surrealistic World War I environment and a turn of the century style mansion.
You are a seriously traumatized returning German soldier plagued by nightmarish visions of your experiences. Your close family members have tragic stories of their own that you are free to uncover. As you wander around your home, sudden noises or memorabilias can trigger a PTSD attack, dragging you back to various nightmarish landscapes based on the "great war." You will encounter vicious demonic creatures, avoid deadly traps and solve challenging puzzles while trying to put the tragic events of the war behind you."
Post traumatic stress disorder is already a terrifying concept, but it leads to more questions about this. Are these creatures real? Are they just figments of imagination caused by the terrors of war? Just what did this German soldier see that scared him so badly? Monsters....or men?
Such an incredible idea almost brought to life....almost....
News eventually spread out of the games cancellation. Apparently the creators website, Strixlab, and other online game company websites all disappeared. Considering this was made seven years ago, it is very unlikely we will never see such a wonderful idea be brought to life.
Such a wonderful idea we will...never....wait what the hell?
