Flashback
Yoongi looks at the man he once admired with more hatred than he's ever had in his life. All he wanted was support for one thing, but here he is, looking at his 'brother' who just betrayed him. "I'm going to rule the mafia one day," Yoongi says. Hoseok shakes him off as if he didn't speak at all.
"You're so stupid. We should go join the other one. The one in charge seems more reliable than anyone I've ever worked with."
"You're insane thinking we can trust our God damn rival. Are you seriously out of your mind?"
"Well I have you of all people as my friend, of course I am," Hoseok replies.
"You're not actually going to leave to join the other mafia, are you? They wouldn't accept you. You work for us."
"Exactly why they'd accept me, I have inside information."
"So what, you'd tell them all about me, huh? Tell them all about Unmei's right hand?" Yoongi asks in a hiss.
"So what if I do? You've been nothing but a dick, I think you deserve a bit of karma, don't you?" Hoseok says, his lips curling up to form a scowl.
"We're supposed to be friends!"
"And you're not supposed to lead one of the most dangerous organizations on Earth! We were supposed to be low-tier members who did what we had to do to make money. Now look at us. You soaring through the ranks while I'm left down here to rot. How many times have I almost died doing the dirty work for our boss? The man who chose you as his successor?"
Yoongi lets a sigh pass his lips. "You knew what you were getting into. You signed up for this."
"No - we did, and now it's just me. It feels like you're slipping away from me more and more every day. It's like I'm losing you to the power you're gaining."
"Are you jealous?"
"What? No, Yoongi listen to yourself. This is me we're talking about. Me. I'd never be jealous of you for succeeding, but please try to understand that if you take over, what becomes of me?"
"You'd be my right hand."
"No, I don't want that. Having power... I hate that idea. I wanted to make some money to get by, that was all I did this for. Now we're getting deeper and deeper. I can't leave! My choices are either wait and watch you take control, or I change mafias and hope that it's safer over there. I don't want to watch you die."
Yoongi shakes him off. "You'd be fine with letting me die, wouldn't you?" Hoseok bites his lower lip, opening his mouth to answer...
~Present~
Yoongi snaps awake, holding his head. He's hyperventilating, hot tears oozing down his cheeks. He wipes them off, regaining his sense of reality. Hoseok isn't here. It was just a memory. Yoongi's been having more of those recently.
Two days after he killed Eladio, he's still on the run. Not a surprise - he'll be on the run for a long, long time. Maybe even forever. Another thing: he hasn't heard from Y/n at all. Ever since their last phone call, they haven't talked. Half of him is worried, the other half isn't sure if he should cry from the pain of no longer running a mafia.
That's actually another question: who's running Unmei? Both Yoongi's right hand and his main underboss are gone. They're with him. So who the hell is leading right now? Well, it doesn't really matter. Not like he's going back anytime soon.
"Glad to see you're finally awake," Namjoon says, kicking at the gravel beneath his feet. There's a clump of burnt, soggy wood before him. A fire used to be there, but it was long gone, any smoke it had not visible in the alleyway. "Bad dream? You were moving a lot."
"I wasn't talking, was I?"
Namjoon shrugs, pressing his head against the brick wall behind him. "If you were, I wasn't listening."
"Good answer." Yoongi sits up with a groan. "Did anything happen while I was out?"
"Other than me wishing for the sweet release of death? No. Jin's still asleep over there, fire's out, no one around. Hell, I don't even know if we're being followed yet."
Namjoon had first watch, Yoongi has second, Jin has third. Now it looks like it's Yoongi's turn. "You should rest, we have a long day ahead of us. I'll take my watch now," Yoongi says.
"Are you sure you'll be alright?"
"Of course."
"Not with watch," Namjoon clarifies. Yoongi hesitates at that. Will he? Namjoon notices his silence and scoots closer, motioning to the alleyway they're hiding out in. "We're stuck in a damn alley until the sun hits. I think we have enough time to talk about it. I know what you're thinking. Why did I do what I did? I can't blame you for thinking that way, and truthfully, I regret it," Namjoon says.
"You do?"
"Of course I do. Yoongi, I genuinely believe you're one of my best friends. I did what I did to give you a chance to get what you deserve: a seat at the High Council. Jin did what he did to make sure Y/n wouldn't kill you. No matter what, we wanted you to stay alive. I'm sorry it completely backfired."
Yoongi processes his words, nodding at the end of them. "You outsmarted me. I can't be mad at you for that. What's done is done."
"You still have every right to be mad about it. We hurt you."
Yoongi dryly chuckles, the brick walls of the apartments boxing them in closing in on his mind. "Does that even mean anything anymore? Ironically, the only thing that hurts right now is being away from her."
"You really like her, don't you?"
He smiles thinking of Y/n's innocent (but not so innocent) face. The way she presents herself a certain way, the way she makes him feel alive. It draws him to her more and more. "I do," he whispers, looking at Namjoon with his eyes lighting up. "And knowing she wants to help me even though she'll be hunted too? I don't know, it makes me feel something I've never felt before."
"Uh oh, cold mafia leader's in love," Namjoon says with a soft smile.
To both of their surprises, Yoongi just chuckles and nods. "Yeah, maybe I am. But I'm glad it's with her. She deserves the world, Joon. I mean it." Yoongi looks up at the cloudy night sky and sighs. For some reason, memories of Hoseok won't leave his mind. Despite being so focused on Y/n and surviving, there's a feeling of dread resting in his chest. All because of Hoseok.
"Joon?" Yoongi asks. The younger man perks up at the mention of his name.
"Everything okay boss?"
Yoongi turns to him and lets out a heavy sigh again. "I forgive you, you know."
Namjoon looks like he wants to say so much, but instead he only nods. "I know," he murmurs. The two share a long look before Yoongi offers the man his hand. There's a few seconds of hesitation, then Namjoon takes it. They shake hands, a mutual feeling of respect hanging above them.
Yoongi genuinely likes Namjoon and Jin, even after this. Knowing they didn't want to kill him is at least somewhat comforting. Is he mad? Of course, but he's not dead. In the mafia world, that means a lot more than most would think. Sometimes not being dead is the best news of the day, and everyone ends up being happy about it. So Yoongi won't complain. On the contrary, he'll be happy he's finally doing something that seems bigger than himself, even if it's a mistake.
He drops Namjoon's hand and leans back. "Go ahead, rest. I'll be okay now," Yoongi says. Namjoon softens at Yoongi's words, humming before deciding to lay down on the hard gravel. It's far from ideal, but they don't have much choice. Yoongi watches Namjoon close his eyes. "Namjoon?" He mumbles, but it sounds like more of a croak. "Goodnight."
For a brief moment, Namjoon opens his eyes to look at Yoongi. In that brief moment, Yoongi sees the eyes of a friend staring back at him. "Goodnight," he mutters.
And just like that they both fall into their peaceful thoughts.
