Heartless

He was going to end it all. Today. He had to.

Her brown eyes which lighted up when she saw anything which interested her... that special smile in her face when she saw him.

No... that was what he was not supposed to be thinking.

If he went down that path, he could not recover. Probably he never will.

Savagely, telling himself not to think about it, he pushed open the door of her office.

His breath was caught in his throat as he saw her typing furiously on the computer.

'What do you do on the computer all day?'

That annoyed pout as she had looked at him.

'How many computer programmers' names do you want me to give, before you get tired and bored?'

As if anything she said could ever tire him. He could keep listening to her just to hear that glorious voice of hers or to see her twinkling brown eyes light up with joy.

Strangely, her brown eyes looked similar to the eyes of the man that he had just met. And the effect of meeting the man was the exact opposite of what he felt when he was with her.

'Walk away, Varun. You have made your bed and you know how your life is going to be. If you want her to live, walk away.'

***

No, he could not do this. Agreed, the man's words made sense and it was the right thing to do.

But he just could not do this.

Varun was gasping and his hand was trembling even worse.

In his stage of advance panic, he did not know that the door behind him in the office, had opened.

"So, it really is you."

God.

She had seen him when he had been staring.

"It looked like you..."

Her glorious smile was killing him.

But before she could say anything else, her words suddenly died in her throat.

Because she had seen him. Actually seen him.

"Varun, what...?"

Her hands were soft and it seemed almost feverishly hot to him.

Or probably his hands were just lifeless and cold.

"I..."

He gave up. He could not talk.

Did she have to be so close?

He could not think. He just could not do anything else when she was near.

"Varun?"

"My parents have chosen another girl for me. Back home." He spoke so fast that his words slipped one over the other.

But then his biggest worry was that she would see through his lie. She should not.

"What?"

Oh, she had heard his gibberish just fine. Because her brown eyes suddenly stopped smiling.

He just realized that he had never seen her like this.

"But..."

"No."

He had to get this over with before he broke down completely. "I think my parents chose right. I came here to tell you that it's over."

She said nothing.

But then he did not need to hear her words.

Because his words said it all.

It was over.
