Chapter 1: A New Gift

• (y/n) - your name

It was supposed to be a special day.

Your best friend's special day.

The day where she gets her gift to help her family and the town.

Yet you ended up going home with something you never expected you'd get;

A gift of your own,

or should you say... a curse?

Let's start from the very beginning.

You were a mere four year old child when you became friends with one of the Madrigals. The Madrigals were the most important people of the village since they possessed powers of their own; in this case, they called them gifts.

You never knew how the story went on how and when the Madrigals managed to get gifts since your parents never really told you about it before when you were little, but even then, you always idolized them when they walked to the town everyday and watched them use their magic.

You especially liked Isabela's gift - the way she can just grow beautiful flowers with a wave of her hand always made you smile. Even seeing Luisa lift up heavy buildings with ease made you wonder how strong she really is.

Every morning, you'd go outside of your home and sit nearby just to see them all do wonderful things with their gifts. You even thought that maybe you could even have one of your own!

It would be nice to help everyone in the town with your gift. You could fly through the skies and deliver things in case anyone was too busy to do so, or maybe you could even read people's minds!

The possibilities were endless when it came to fantasizing about what gift you were getting when you were five years old. While you weren't a Madrigal, you still wished that you could have one. Your parents just knew that you'd cry if you realized that you can't have one if you weren't a part of their family.

Still, out of all the Madrigals who came to the village everyday, there was this one child who looked like he was more than happy to mess around with other people with pranks that he might've hidden under his sleeve. You couldn't seem to take his eyes off of him whenever he's in your line of sight.

He doesn't look like he's using his gift, so you assumed that he was also the same age as you are, along with the other girl who was constantly smiling and always in awe whenever she sees what Isabela and Luisa are doing. Both of them were most likely not of age yet to get their gifts.

There was this one time where you ended up crying because your favorite stuffed rabbit's head got ripped off. Sniffling and sobbing from the side of your house, you hugged your stuffed rabbit close to your chest until you heard a set of soft footsteps walking towards your way.

Lifting your small head up, you were a bit surprised to see the boy Madrigal. He had a light golden-brown complexion and brown curly hair. You immediately recognized him as well due to the yellow poncho he wore.

"Hey, what's wrong?" He said with a gentle smile as he takes a seat next to you. Wiping your tears, you try to hide your toy away from him and shifted your eyes away, not wanting to have company at the moment.

"It's... nothing." You said in a small voice. The boy frowned but leaned forward to see what you were hiding, much to your surprise and discomfort. While you proceeded to hide the toy further away from him, he already saw and knew what you were crying about.

"Oh, your toy is broken..." He said, to which you didn't reply. You just kept your gaze away from him as you continued to sniffle and prevent any more tears from falling out of your eyes.

"Hey, don't worry about it!" You heard the cheerful voice of the boy say. You lifted your head again to see him already standing in front of you with his hand lifted for you to take. "I don't know much about fixing stuffed toys, but I know someone who could help you!"

You stared at his hand for a moment then back up at his face. You could see his green eyes twinkling happily as he stared right on your tear-filled face. Despite from the somewhat dim background, the freckles around his cheeks and round nose were visible. He looked cute, to say the least.

You hesitated before taking his hand and lifting yourself up from the ground. "How are you going to fix this?" You asked and showed him the decapitated head and torso of your stuffed rabbit with bits of small cotton spilling out. "It looks like stitching it just won't be enough..."

"Like I said, don't worry about it." He said, his comforting grip on your hand slightly tightening. "My tia can probably help you fix your toy!"

"Your tia...?"

"Tia Julieta! I'm sure you've seen her around the village healing people with food!"

You paused and slowly dropped your hand to your side. Was he suggesting to bring your toy rabbit to her so she can feed it and miraculously grow its head back?

"...Doesn't Miss Julieta's gift only affect real people?" You asked while staring down at your stuffed rabbit.

"...What do you- Wait, no!" The boy snorted and almost seemed to hold back his laughter when he realized what you meant. "I'm saying that tia Julieta can help you fix it by stitching it together. She even fixed my poncho once!" He said and pointed at the stitched section of his yellow poncho where it semeed to have been previously ripped.

"Oh." You muttered and immediately thinned your lips out of embarrassment. Scoffing playfully, the boy grabbed your hand once more and grinned.

"Come on! You can also meet my prima, Mirabel!" He said. Before you could ask if Mirabel was the girl who always seemed close with Isabela and Luisa, he cut you off ans dragged you out from the shadows, towards the center of the village, where the light hit your face once more.

Blinking and adjusting your eyes to the bright light, your vision landed on the boy's face. Now that you weren't in the shadows anymore, his appearance looked clearer and more visible;

His brown curls were messy like he hasn't brushed them for two days, yet it still looked good on him. The way he grinned with one missing tooth made you let out a small giggle, and his green eyes looked prettier than before. You can even see his freckles more now.

"Oh right, I almost forgot to introduce myself!" He said and began to shake your hand vigorously. "My name's Camilo! Nice to meet you!"

'Camilo...' You said his name inside your mind, almost as if you wanted to remember it forever. Smiling and wiping the last tears from your eyes, you gently retracted your hand away from Camilo and hugged the pieces of your stuffed rabbit close to your chest.

"(Y/N). Nice to meet you too!"

True to his words, Camilo led you to his tia Julieta, who also had Mirabel by her side. She seemed to be helping her prepare her areppas to people in the village who were sick or just had injuries. The little girl was confused when her cousin brought a girl along with her, but immediately smiled to comfort you when you saw how nervous you were.

You did have a right to be nervous; you haven't talked to any of the Madrigals until now. You always just watched them from your bedroom window, from the porch of your house, or from a crowd. Talking to them all of a sudden felt like a dream come true.

"Oh yes, dear." said Julieta with a gentle smile. She reminded you a lot of your mother, who unfortunately, was away in this specific day. "I can definitely fix her for you, so don't worry."

"Really?" Your chest felt like it was about to burst from happiness. "Thank you so much, miss Julieta!"

"I told you she can fix it, (Y/N)." Camilo popped up from behind your back and patted your shoulder. "Don't be sad anymore, alright?"

Giving him a thankful grin, you nodded and gave Camilo a brief hug. "Thank you, Camilo!" You exclaimed before retracting away and turning over towards Mirabel, who was now walking over towards the both of you.

Camilo, on the other hand, was processing the scene that just happened. It shocked him that you would just hug him out of nowhere, but his eyes softened once he saw you talking to his cousin. Seeing people smile and helping them with their troubles was something Camilo always loved to do, even if his methods sometimes do get him in trouble.

He and Mirabel also gained a new friend today! How awesome could his day get?

Ever since then, you, Camilo, and Mirabel became good friends. You eventually got to learn a lot about the family Madrigal, especially once you finally stepped foot inside their house. It was bigger than you expected it to be, but then again, you were a small child - of course everything was gonna be bigger.

Mirabel always communicated with Casita. It almost made you scream when the tiles suddenly carried you over towards the kitchen with your friend right beside you, laughing at your reaction.

After a year though, you've gotten used to Casita moving furnitures and the floors. You always greeted them when you came over and visited Mirabel and Camilo at the nursery. Due to your frequent visits, most of the Madrigals already knew you and even acknowledged you as some sort of a family member that just doesn't live in the house.

Isabela would grow some pretty roses of your favorite color just to impress you and Mirabel. Luisa would surprise you and lift you over her back from time to time. Dolores would chit chat with you about some things she heard in the village, which you weren't really sure how to respond. Abuela Alma would just smile at you and sometimes have you join her and Mirabel when she's talking about the origins of La Casa Madrigal.

Even Bruno, who you don't really see frequently but always get a peek of him from time to time, knows who you are and acknowledges you whenever you're in the house.

As you three turned five years old, Camilo finally got his gift. You were disappointed that you couldn't have one of your own and that maybe you couldn't be friends with him anymore since you didn't have, but seeing Camilo happy and getting his own door made you think that it wouldn't matter if you didn't get one. You were sure that he would still hang out with you, same goes to Mirabel - she'll be getting her gift in a few months as well.

Ever since Camilo got his gift, he wouldn't stop using it to surprise you or prank you. There were times where he shapeshifted into Mirabel just so he could get extra pieces of candies that you always brought with you whenever you visited. Well, until the real Mirabel steps inside the nursery, which in turns makes you chase after the mischievous boy around the house.

He couldn't outrun you, of course. Casita was always there to help you and slow him down by letting the floors move like a treadmill, stopping him from running away.

Although he shapeshifted often, you never really saw him shapeshift as you before. You first figured it was because he didn't want to shapeshift into people who weren't his family, but he also shapeshifts into some of the townspeople, so you weren't sure anymore.

You even asked him once about it, but he let out this obnoxiously loud laugh and stuttered. "HAHAHAHAHA I-I think my-uh... My-My papa is uh- c-calling me, (Y/N)! I gotta-gotta go...!" He said and dashed away while shapeshifting into Mirabel, abuela, and Felix before you could even say anything.

You shrugged it off and thought that maybe Camilo was just uncomfortable shapeshifting as you since you're his friend. Maybe he even shapeshifts as you without you seeing, but even so, you shouldn't really think about it.

After all, Mirabel would be getting her gift tonight and you were excited.

You walked towards the Madrigal's house at night, when the ceremony usually takes place. You held your parents' hands as you walked inside, but not before being greeted by Camilo as he shapeshifted into Mirabel and gave you a high-five by the entrance.

It was festive, just like during Camilo's ceremony. Isabela grew beautiful flowers around the balcony as always. Luisa carried heavy furnitures to decorate around the house. Julieta prepared delicious meals that guests could eat. Dolores had her ears out to check if everyone in town is already in the house. Pepa was being comforted by Felix by helping her calm down and not get anxious so the weather wouldn't be rainy.

Just like in Camilo's ceremony, Bruno was also there. Though, he looks like he's trying way too hard to not get any attention for himself by being in the corner of the room. Approaching to the man, you showed him a smile of reassurance. "Hola, señor Bruno." You said with a wave.

Not expecting anyone to actually approach him, he almost flew out of the corner of the room before setting his eyes on your little form. "O-Oh, it's just... you." He sighed as his shoulders loosened. "I um... I'm sorry. I'm not that... good with people."

"It's alright!" You said and stood next to him, watching the rest of his family smile and talk to the villagers before Mirabel gets her spotlight tonight. You sighed in satisfaction before opening your mouth to speak.

"Mirabel is getting her gift tonight..." You said and then turned around to look at Bruno. "Isn't that great? She and Camilo now have gifts that can help the village and the family!"

"Um... yes." said Bruno, unsure on how to respond to you. Apart from his family, he never really got to talk to you that much. Well, that was to be expected since he never really leaves his room other than to eat.

However you, as a five year old child who doesn't really know when to put a brake on your ramblings, continued talking. "I wish I could have a gift too. Maybe I could also help everyone in the village with my gift! It'll be nice to be able to grow flowers like Isabela, or shapeshift like Camilo!" You said dreamily and began to fantasize once again.

Bruno could only smile sadly at your words. Looking at his calloused fingers, he wondered that maybe if he got a different gift, he could be more useful to everyone else. "Yeah, that would be nice..." He muttered. "If you had a gift, I'm sure you'll do well to help everyone."

With those words, your smile widened and your eyes twinkled brightly. "You really think so!?"

Bruno didn't respond for a second but his smile remained on his face as he softly brings a hand over to your head, rubbing it slowly yet gently. "Of course." He said.

"You know, you're really not as bad as other people think you are." You said with a grin. "You're a really nice person, señor Bruno!"

Bruno was surprised for a moment. No one really told him that he was a nice person before because of the visions he told other people. They always saw the worst of his gift, and in extension, they saw the worst in him. It's gotten to the point that he doesn't even want to use his gift anymore, and wondered if he was actually helping the family at all.

"Oh, you can see visions right?" You asked, which immediately made Bruno uncomfortable. Just when he thought he was safe. "Can you see mine? Would I be able to help people even without a gift?"

Bruno gulped. "Well-"

Before he could say anything, he was cut off by abuela Alma calling for everyone's attention. The black haired man sighed in relief when he realized he was saved from potentially making (Y/N) go crazy with his visions.

Everyone gathered around towards the center of the house and watched as abuela stood on the steps of the stairs, holding the beautiful candle that signified the miracle that the Madrigals acquired. Your parents stood beside you and Camilo, who was with his parents, scanned the crowd and waved happily when he finally found you.

You waved back before turning your attention back to the candle and abuela. It was the candle that hid the town Encanto and gave each children of the family Madrigal gifts to help the people everyday.

It was glowing beautifully - sparks of the flame that flickered gently on the candle floated around like they were fireflies. The designs that looked like they were carved on the candle also seemed to glow. Even from a distance, (Y/N) felt warm and safe at the presence of the candle. She wondered how it would be like to touch it, just like Camilo did. Just like how Mirabel would as she gets her gift.

However, the longer (Y/N) stared at the candle, the more she felt her lungs tightening. Suddenly feeling uncomfortable, she looked down to the floor and tried to catch a bit of her breath, only to find the tiles ominously shuffling under her feet.

The cracks between the tiles suddenly gave off a dark red glow. Feeling a burning sensation on her hands, she looked down and almost wanted to scream when she saw her palms smoking and reddening every second.

Before she could lose her composure, she felt the comforting hand of her mother on her shoulder. "Honey, are you alright?" She asked worriedly. You raised your head and stared at your mother for a moment before looking down at the floors, only to realize that it looked normal.

Like nothing happened at all.

You looked at your hands and they weren't burning. They weren't smoking, nor were they giving off an odd red glow.

"Y-Yes, mama..." You said before turning your attention back to abuela, however you weren't listening at all. Your mind kept travelling back to the weird hallucination you just got. What was that?

Before you know it, abuela's speech finally finished and the lights were kept towards Mirabel, who looked especially pretty tonight. She wasn't moving and instead scanned the crowd nervously like she was looking for someone.

When Mirabel's hazel eyes suddenly landed on you, she gently lifted her hand up. Your eyes widened and wondered if she wanted someone else to take her hand, but seeing her smiling gently when your eyes landed back on hers, you gulped and slowly made your way towards your best friend.

You held Mirabel's hands and tightened your grip around it, indicating that you were nervous, especially since everyone's eyes were on you. You never really liked being the center of attention, it's why you were comfortable just watching the Madrigals most of the time by your window before you befriended Camilo and Mirabel.

But you knew that your best friend needed you right now. She needed comfort, and while she was more than excited to get her gift and rambled about it for the past week, when she was finally getting it, obviously she'd be very nervous.

What if something went horribly wrong?

You looked up and watched the Madrigals, who kept their eyes on you and Mirabel. Abuela was shocked, but her eyes softened and looked like she was even encouraging you to be with Mirabel as she walks up to her door. Isabela and Luisa looked happy that you were there to comfort their little sister. Dolores' smile widened at the both of you holding hands together.

And Camilo?

Well, happy doesn't even begin to describe his emotions. He was proud to see his best friend and his cousin walking together on the aisle. He wished he had done the same thing to you when he had his ceremony, but he was ecstatic just seeing you and Mirabel together as she's about to get her gift.

You always wanted one and often told the two of them about it, so he knew that you were just as happy as he is when you're walking with Mirabel towards her new door. It felt like you too were getting your own gift that can be used to help the town.

As you two arrived at the top of the staircase, you gently retracted your hand away from Mirabel and gave her a reassuring smile and an encouraging nod, almost as if you were saying, "You can do it." to her telepathically.

Mirabel returned the nod before turning over to abuela, smiling at her and placing her hands on the sides of the candle. You watched as Julieta placed her hand on your shoulder and Agustin silently thanked you for being with Mirabel during the ceremony.

Your heart continued to beat faster when Mirabel finally removed her hands away from the candle and walked over towards her new door, which was glowing and welcoming her to grant her her new gift. Wiping her hands on the skirt of her dress, she gently raised her arm,

placed her hand on the doorknob,

...

...

...?

Then nothing happened.

Instead of the door glowing brightly and showing the carvings on the door which signified her new gift, the door dimmed lifelessly.

You took a step forward in confusion. This has never happened before. The door was supposed to show her what her gift was, wasn't it?

Mirabel turned towards abuela with her hands anxiously held together. Everyone was just as confused as she was. Abuela looked down at the candle and her troubled face deepened when the candle flickered dangerously like it suddenly got out of control.

A strong gush of wind caused everyone to gasp and panic. Pepa was starting to get nervous as dark clouds surrounded her. Camilo frowned and ran up towards the stairs in case something happened to his cousin and best friend as Felix walked over towards his wife to calm her down. Dolores' lips trembled, Luisa and Isabela became anxious while following Camilo to get to Julieta and Agustin.

Another strong gush of wind almost flew you out of the house. However thankfully, Luisa was there to grab you and the others. You could've sworn you heard your parents call for your name but you couldn't even see them in the panicking crowd.

However, you did see Bruno pushing through the crowd to get to his family, sepecifically Pepa and Felix since they were the only ones still at the bottom of the stairs. He wanted to be there to protect them if something happened, even if he isn't capable enough to do so.

"W-What..." Abuela's eyes widened in fear when the dimmed door that was supposed to be Mirabel's glowed orange instead of the calming golden glow that every door in the house of Madrigals were known for.

Loud rumbles from behind the house entered everyone's ears, then screams and gasps of fear echoed around the house. The house's tiles shook and wiggled, the walls rumbled, and the furnitures were starting to get all over the place.

The lights around the candle flew over towards you and circled around your body until one of them phased through your hands and your stomach, making you feel nauseous. Camilo tried his hardest to make sure you didn't collapse and Mirabel was right beside you, crying and asking what was wrong.

"What was that? Did it came from the candle...?" asked Isabela and kept her gaze back and forth towards you and abuela. The older woman gave you a strange look; you couldn't tell if she was looking at you fearfully or if she was looking at you in complete shock.

All of a sudden, the rumbles stopped and the house stopped shaking. Everyone started murmuring as they shakily stood up and looked towards the Madrigals, especially abuela.

However, the Madrigals' attention weren't on them. Their eyes were on the new door that was suddenly glowing in an orange color. It was less inviting than the rest of the golden glowing doors of the Madrigals. It was also darker, as if it was just barely hanging on to life.

Everyone eventually took a closer look to the door and wondered if it was Mirabel's gift. However, they were surprised to see someone else's name at the top of the door and the glowing carving of the person who was going to occupy it.

(Y/N)

It was yours.

Everyone slowly turned to look at you, who was kneeling on the ground and taking a few deep breaths with Camilo and Mirabel supporting you side by side. "(Y/N)...?" Abuela's voice was small, yet everyone knew that she was on edge.

"This can't be right..." She continued and then looked down at the candle. It returned back to its normal state. No dangerous flickers of flame. The sparks that flew around it were gentle and soft. It still gave off the same warm feeling that everyone was familiar with.

Only, the warmth of the candle didn't seem to comfort them this time.

You lifted your head then realized that everyone was looking at you with mixed expressions. Most of them were confused. Some were scared. The very few were shocked.

Before you could stand up and wonder what's gotten everyone like that, you heard Camilo and Mirabel's yelp from beside you. "(Y-Y/N)!" exclaimed Mirabel as she took a step away from you.

"Your- your hand!" Camilo pointed at your hands, which were on the floor of the house. It took you a moment to process what was happening, but when you did, you started to scream.

Fire was dancing around your fingertips and  you began to wave them around fearfully, the flickers of the fire hitting Isabela's flowers that decorated the balcony of the house. "AAAAAAAA!" You continued to scream and everyone pointed at the burning flowers. Pepa, who was already very nervous and began to have heavy rain around her head, was brought over towards the fire to extinguish them.

"(Y/N)!?" You heard your mother call for your name, however, you weren't listening at all. You were too busy screaming and waving your hand around to try and flick away the fire from your body. It even started to burn your skin after a while.

It wasn't until Bruno ran over towards you and shouted for you to calm down when you finally got it under control. "(Y/N)!" He shouted and avoided the flickers of fire that flew out of your hands. "(Y/N)! You need to stop, breathe, and calm down!"

Looking at Bruno, who was standing right in front of you while keeping a safe distance away, you stopped, closed your eyes and took shaky deep breaths. You were already crying from the burning pain that the fire inflicted on your hands so it took you longer to calm down. But eventually, the fire on your hands and around the house became smaller and eventually faded away, leaving a trail of black smoke and some ashes that fluttered to the floor.

After everyone regained their composure, they turned their gaze towards you once again. However, you kept looking at your hands which were still smoking and were still red from the burn.

"(Y/N)...?" You heard Mirabel's voice coming towards you. You lifted your head up as your eyes were glossy with tears. "You... You have a door..."

You looked over towards the door where Mirabel's was supposed to be and slowly walked over towards it with her and Bruno following you from behind. Everyone's eyes were on you, but most especially, the Madrigals.

They were all shocked.

Abuela just looked... scared.

You kept your gaze down to the floor to avoid their looks since you can't bear seeing their fearful or shocked faces, especially since they were for you.

Rubbing your hands on your arms, you finally reached the door and looked at it. The door had a seemingly ominous orange glow with your name carved at the top, among with the image of you lifting your hands up as carvings of fire were all around you. Your eyes were closed and you were wearing the same clothes you were wearing right now.

Your lips trembled and your face paled. You have a gift.

You have a gift.

Despite not being a Madrigal, you have one.

The you 20 minutes ago would've been happy. However, realizing that you almost burned Casita down and would've hurt others if it wasn't for Bruno helping you calm down...

You started to take your wish back and slowly started to take in the fact that you have the ability to control and create fire.

You had Pyrokinesis.
