Chapter 14 - Midnight
The doctor came out a few minutes after midnight, saying that Mia was in a room, but not yet awake. They estimated she would be up within a few minutes. We were allowed to see her now. Her parents, my parents, and I all rushed towards her room after the doctor told us where to go.
I heard a loud scream when we were close to her room. It was Mia. I rushed in to see what was wrong.
"Mia, what's wrong!?" I asked, panicked. I saw that she was awake, but she had a cast on her left arm and her right leg was elevated with a cast on it also. She had some bandages on her head for some reason.
"Where am I?"
"You're in the hospital."
"I am? Wait.. Who is this talking to me?"
"It's Michael.."
"Michael? What are you doing here? And why can't I see you?" She asked, turned towards me.
"What? What are you saying?" I asked her.
"I can't see you at all. Also I hardly know you, so why are you here?" She was making no sense. I asked the doctor what was going on.
"We believe that when she fell, she hit around her forehead, where the short-term memory is located. Then, we think she flipped over, hitting the back over her head, the part of the brain where the vision is located," he told me.
"So what are you saying?" I asked.
"Well, she is temporarily blind. She can't see anything right now. She also can't remember anything after two years ago. Anything that has happened in the past two years, she doesn't remember. Both of them are temporary, though. She will get her vision and memory back."
"Oh my god. She's blind right now and she doesn't know that I was ever her boyfriend," it took a minute to all sink in.
"Mia," I turned towards her, "I know you think I don't know you very well, but I'm your boyfriend, well, I was.."
"What? You've never been my boyfriend!" She yelled.
"Mia, you just don't remember what has happened in the past two years. You're seventeen now. And you're almost a senior."
"No. I'm only a freshman. What are you talking about?"
"Mia, you fell from my porch and you lost two years of your memory and your sight temporarily."
"I've never been to your house."
"Mia, trust me. You have been there many times since you've been my girlfriend."
"I said I've never been your girlfriend! We've always like each other but you've always been too scared to ask me out.." I was getting an insight into what Mia thought about me before we were dating.
"Babe, I know you don't remember much, but if you saw me and your parents, you could tell that it's not 2010. It's 2012 now. Almost 2013. And Mia, I love you, so much. You just think an ass right now. You hate me. I don't like that. Now I feel terrible for this. I feel like this is my fault," I began to cry.
"Don't cry. I'm sorry. I don't remember anything."
"It's not your fault. It's mine."
"Michael, I have no memory of how I got into the hospital, but I know it wasn't your fault. You seem to care about me too much to ever do anything like that." Her saying that made me feel a lot better. I couldn't believe she said that.
