15. Selfishness and Reality
"The water is crazy clear." You whispered as you kicked your feet in rhythmic movements.
"Do you...hear the melody too?" Luka's voice was gentle and completely hesitant as he sat with you on the ledge. He hadn't been back here since the night he took Marinette, but something told him this would be the best place to make things right with you.
"I do." You had a small smile on your face as you sat with your eyes closed as you listened to all the sounds of the area around you.
"I'm sorry that I pushed too far." Luka's sighed.
You shrugged, "I overreacted. I was also a bitch, I'm sorry." Your eyes opened and you glanced over at him with a bashful smile spreading across your lips.
"Both true." He chuckled softly and his face immediately shifted to appear defensive when you glared over at him, "Hey you said it first."
You bit your lip as you tried to hold back your smile. "Yeah, well, I'm allowed to say it."
"I simply agreed with you."
The two of you fell back into silence. The water moved rapidly with the wind, as it was steadily growing later into fall.
"What's your favorite season?" You asked and he looked over at you with a confused expression.
"I don't really have a favorite. Each season brings something. One gives me more creativity musically, another inspires me to craft instruments." He spoke as he shrugged once more, like he could continue listing off reasons.
"Valid." You responded though you could only think about how similar he sounded to Marinette's indecisiveness.
"What about you then? Just to continue on with your random questions." He snickered and you resisted the urge to smack him.
"Fall." You answered immediately.
"Well you must be happy now then."
"You wanna know why? Since you had your justifications ready I may as well give you mine." You grinned at him and he nodded simply, not picking up on the playful tone you threw back at him.
"Go ahead."
You blinked as you paused but then nodded. "You can see the stars the best during the fall. I don't understand why truly, but they are the brightest during this time of year."
"Why do you care for the stars so much?" He questioned.
You smiled softly. They had always reminded you of all the places you wanted to go because the stars looked over everyone. For a few years, stargazing was the best way to connect with Marinette...and there was also Adrien who always reminded you that your heart was in the stars. "They're beautiful and hold an incredible amount of meaning." You decided to keep the answer simpler.
"I agree but I guess I'm also not the type to focus as much on the simpler things in life."
You looked at him with a baffled expression. "You don't think so? That's surprising with how calm you are, I'd think you would like everything to be simple." You snorted.
"I'm calm on the outside Y/n, but my mind and my heart are always raging." With the way his eyes lit up when he looked at you, you couldn't help but wonder if he wanted to finish that statement with 'when I'm with you.'
**
The two of you stopped at your door.
"I really am sorry again. I can't control my stupid ass temper sometimes." You spoke, embarrassed.
Luka's smile widened. "Or your mouth." He squished your cheeks together and you batted his hand away.
"Go home you little fucker." You stuck your tongue out at him and turned to reach for your door. Luka grabbed your wrist, making you stop with your hand hovered over your doorknob.
"What?" You asked with a shaky voice as you felt your cheeks begin to slowly flare from the nervous feeling his touch was giving you.
"I was just wondering if you were coming to our birthday party?" He asked and let go of your wrist.
You furrowed your eyebrows. "Jules may have mentioned that?" You spoke with a higher-pitched voice, "But I've been completely caught up in my own bullshit so I haven't thought much about it. I'm such a brat." You laughed.
"You should come."
His voice was serious which made your heart begin to pound again. "Okay." You whispered and you couldn't believe how quickly you said yes. "Only for Juleka though." You replied with a wink, sounding much smoother than you had previously sounded.
Luka laughed. "I wouldn't expect anything different."
You wagged your finger at him teasingly. "You better keep thinking that way, Couffaine."
"Goodnight Y/n." He still was smiling as he waved to you before walking back to his house.
You felt as if you fell through the door as you walked inside.
"Did you make things better dear?" Your mom asked as she noticed you walk inside. She didn't know the complete details of the argument the two of you had, but you wanted to be honest with her when you told her where you were going earlier.
"I think so." You nodded assuringly, "So about a birthday party...."
***
"Morning Y/n." You turned and your eyes were immediately met with his shimmering green ones. You felt heat rush to your face and you smiled shyly.
"Morning, Adrien."
"How did things go with Luka? I hope you guys made up." Adrien smiled brightly like he always did. You felt your heart pound against your chest at the mention of Luka, and simply having a conversation with Adrien. It was all getting to be a lot.
You waved your hand in front of your face in attempt to cool off. "It went really well." You beamed as you looked up at him, "Thanks for encouraging me to talk to him."
Adrien nodded. "I just want you to be happy Y/n."
"Is you-know-who with you?" You asked with a cheeky grin, also trying to avoid the flustered feeling his response sent soaring through you.
"Y/n! We're at school!" He whispered, though his voice sounded almost like a hiss.
You waved your hand at him dismissively. "That's why I used his code name! I miss my buddy." You winked and he looked incredibly nervous.
Adrien grabbed you by the wrist and dragged you into a corner of the courtyard. You stumbled behind him. Once you were settled into a corner, he slightly opened his shirt. "Here, say hi, quickly." He nervously looked around. You laughed internally, it looked like he was selling you drugs very poorly.
"Y/n!!!" Plagg whisper yelled excitedly. The two of you did your small little hand shake.
"Adrien giving you trouble?" You asked, continuing to keep your cheeky grin plastered across your face.
"Always."
Adrien, frustrated, closed his shirt and shut up his kwami. "Anyways!"
You noticed he sounded like he was about to speak again, but you saw your sister roll into a recycling bin behind him. "What the hell is her problem?" You raised an eyebrow.
"Who?" He asked, eyes not moving from your face. You lifted your hand and gently pushed his face in the direction of your foolish sister.
"Why is she in there?" He asked blankly.
You slapped your forehead. "I have no clue."
You finished up talking with Adrien and walked over to Juleka who was now staring solemnly as the floor alone. You took a seat next to her and tapped her shoulder.
"What's with the face Jules?" You asked gently and she looked up at you with a nervous expression.
"I...uh-"
"Did Marinette say something?" You asked with a lighter tone, knowing the conflict between you and your sister always made her nervous.
Juleka fumbled with her hands and allowed her hair to cover most of her face. "Yes."
"What was it Jules?"
"Well...Luka and I have been going back and forth about what to do with our birthday. We originally wanted to get the gang together and go to the movies, but then Alya suggested a birthday party. Now Marinette says she doesn't want to go unless you and Luka don't go and she wants me to ask both of you to stay home." Your eyes were wide with shock because it was the most you ever heard her speak at once, even if her words were mostly mumbled.
You sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder, pulling her in for a hug. "If you don't want me to come, I won't. Don't let her force this on you. It's you and your brothers birthday, not her's, okay?" You we're trying your hardest to remain calm for her sake.
"I want you there, Luka too. I want all of you to make up so we can all hang out together." She had pulled back from you and you noticed there were tears beginning to swell in her eyes.
"Oh Jules." You smiled gently, "You have the kindest heart."
She looked up at you with surprised eyes, almost like she had never heard those words before. "Thank you Y/n."
You nodded. "I hope we all make up too." You whispered, unsure if she heard you.
**
You arrived early to help your friends decorate their house boat.
"You sure you don't need the stool Y/n?" Luka was smirking behind you with his guitar strapped around him and his arms crossed observantly.
You turned around, stuck your tongue out at him, and flipped him off before taking a big jump and taping the end of the streamers to the pole. "Ha! Screw you asshat I got it just fine."
Luka just smiled his typical smile and nodded. He patted you on the head. "You're adorable, and stubborn."
You felt your face fume at his sentiment and you swatted his hand away. "Just because it's your birthday doesn't mean I have to take your teasing bullshit." You stuck your tongue out again.
Juleka walked onto the deck and your ran over to her excitedly and threw yourself on her in a tight hug. "Oh Jules! I missed you! Your brother was being a huge meanie!" You whined as you rubbed your cheek against hers and she hugged you back a bit awkwardly.
She wasn't used to you being affectionate like this, but she did enjoy your playful mood.
"She's just being dramatic. I called her adorable, no harm in that." Luka laughed softly as he walked over to you and his sister.
You once again flipped him off and he simply shrugged before he walked over to the side of the boat to play his guitar.
His music filled the air and you smiled brightly. You followed Juleka and helped her put up the last of the balloons.
Your friends soon began to fill the boat and you noticed your sister had actually came. You sat on the opposite side of the ship across from Luka. She was saying something to Juleka before she noticed Luka. Her eyes almost popped out of her head as she scanned the room for you too. You scoffed the second she met your gaze.
"Marinette!" Luka stood with a bright smile that made your heart sink.
Marinette backed into a table. "I-UH SORRY! I FORGOT SOMETHING DOWNSTAIRS! YEAH THATS IT!" She turned and ran down.
You rolled your eyes and walked over to Luka and hugged his arm. "Are you okay?"
"I knew she was avoiding me." Was all he said. To your surprise, his eyes didn't appear to reflect heartbreak like you were expecting, it was something deeper than that.
You nodded your head back to your keyboard. "Come on old man, let's play something."
"Aren't you older than me?" He teased.
"Say that again Luka Couffaine, and I'll fuck you up."
**
The music was blaring out of the speakers and you danced with all of your friends. Zoe spun you around and you giggled uncontrollably. "You've got moves, city girl!" You grinned and she laughed as she rolled her eyes at you playfully.
"You're from a city too."
"So literal." You whined as you leaned your head on her shoulder.
"I'm glad you came, I know your sister tried to ruin that." Zoe sighed and you nodded, your head rubbing against her jacket.
"I'm glad too. I'm having fun and I haven't been able to say that in months it seems." You smiled as you looked back up at her, eyes locking. "The last time I did was when I was with you." You flashed her what Adrien always thought of as your jaw dropping smile. Jagged Stone entered the houseboat and you turned to face him, missing the blush creeping up your best friend's cheeks.
"Hey Dad!" Luka grinned and you smiled happily for him.
Your friends all gasped at the revelation they were having.
"You got any wrapping paper?" You heard him ask Luka. You walked over to the two of them.
"I have some." You smiled.
"Hey you looked familiar." Jagged pointed his finger at you and you snorted.
"Y/n Dupain-Cheng." You spoke and his eyes lit up.
"Oh you're Marinette's sister! Wow she's a talented one isn't she? That must mean you're pretty wicked too!"
Luka nodded as he pulled you closer to him by your arm. "She is! She's a killer musician."
You felt the awkwardness rush through you as Jagged began to praise you.
"So that wrapping paper!" You said louder than you had meant to.
**
The three of you walked downstairs. "I think I shoved it in Luka's room."
"Girls go in your room? Rock on son!" Jagged grinned and both of your faces began to flame.
"Dad! Don't be weird!" Luka almost shrieked.
Jagged laughed his head off. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Here take this and hide it somewhere! Not a word to your sister!"
"Jagged!" You stopped and turned when you heard your sister yell.
You stood in Luka's doorway and watched your sister defend Juleka. "It's for her idiot." You groaned quietly as you stood against the doorframe watching them now exchange gifts.
Before you knew it, your favorite twin's parents were tugging Luka's CD and screaming at each other. You rushed over to Luka and the others.
"It's how I got my life back together after you left me!" Jagged yelled and you clamped your hand over your mouth, amazed at the tea.
You noticed the small purple butterfly fly over your heads. "Let go of it you idiots!" You screamed but it was too late.
The others dropped their things out of horror.
You all made a run for it as the purple magic began chasing you all up the stairs. "Everyone! Get off of the boat!" Marinette screamed and you grabbed Zoe who was almost in shock as you all jumped off the boat just in time.
*
You were huddled in a corner with Zoe who was incredibly nervous. She hated akumatization and got especially panicky after yours.
You held her close as the two of you watched ladybug and Chat Noir soar through the sky.
"Ladybug!" Chat Noir called out almost in a panic as he watched the villains who were now fighting in the sky.
"Let's get moving Chat." She spoke with a smile but he grabbed her wrist before she could take off. "What is it?" Her brows furrowed.
"I think we should get some help this time. Why don't you give Y/n Dupain-Cheng a miraculous?" He asked carefully, knowing you would probably love the opportunity to fight.
Ladybug's eyes widened. "Definitely not." She spoke calmly but firm and swung off to save her friend's parents.
**
"STOPPPP!" Your head shot up. You had been extremely busy with your piece of birthday cake so you hadn't noticed Juleka's parents fighting again. You rolled your eyes, hoping that they would just stop so they wouldn't be akumatized again.
"You are going to apologize and make up by talking not yelling!" Juleka spoke loud and firm as she pointed to her parents.
"WOOOO! Go Jules!" You cheered and you were given strange looks.
"But he was the one-!"
"No one cares, the past is the past." Juleka said and you couldn't help but snicker.
*
It was getting late and you sat with Zoe on the edge of the boat. She was watching the water and you faced the other way and watched as your sister and Luka sat there laughing softly with each other.
"He still loves her...doesn't he?" You asked with a shaky voice.
Zoe looked up at you with a frown. You were staring at the two of them so hard that she was amazed that they hadn't noticed. "I think so, but you still love Adrien right?" She asked with almost a hopeless tone.
"I feel so drawn to both of them...I'm incredibly shitty." You sighed and rubbed your temples.
Zoe sat there, feeling the exact same way. She pulled you in for a tight hug. "You'll figure it out...you always do."
"I'm not so sure about that." You chuckled.
"We're all selfish sometimes." She spoke and you sighed. "Reality also sucks sometimes too."
She was looking back out at the water and you looked up at her, noticing the oddly sad look on her face. "We all love each other though. At the end of the day, that's all that matters right?" Her sad face formed a forced smile.
You looked to the ground and nodded your head gently. "Yeah...love." You whispered.
You knew Marinette and Luka weren't over there getting back together. As much as you wanted to storm over there and yell at her, you didn't. None of you deserved anything but this perfect night, you couldn't ruin that. So instead you sat there surrounding by the people you loved, and decided you would do just that.
Love.
Nothing more, nothing less.
