Here's an Excerpt from A Christmas Love Story
I look at the old Victorian styled house my Grandma lives in. It has a wrap-around porch and a swinging chair.
I sat in the back of the social workers car as she pulled in front of a white house, with a lake behind it.
An elderly lady hobbles down the stairs to meet the car.
The social worker steps out of the car and opens the door for me.
I pull my seatbelt off and step out of the car.
The Social worker introduces me to my Grandma.
The lady starts to cry. "Oh, you look like my Amy." She turns to the social worker. "What happened to her parents?"
"They were run off the road by a truck. She was staying at a friends the night of the accident. No one knew about her until the friends parents made a call to the Police and we were called in to take her in. You're her only living relative. It's great that you're willing to take in a Twelve year old."
"She's going to make me feel young. Do you want to come in for a tea?"
The social worker looks at her watch. "I can spare a couple of minutes." She open the boot and pulls my bags out. I carry an overnight bag into the house.
I look at my Grandma. "Can you tell me which room is mine?"
"You can have Amy's room."
I climb the stairs and look for the door that has Amy on it. Mum's old room was at the far corner of the house.
I open the door and step into the purple bedroom.
Mum had the coolest room.
I walk over to the window and the lake is sparkling from the sun.
Someone clears there throat and I come out of the memory of my Grandma. She changed my life that day. She's the one that shaped out the woman I've become.
I smile. "Hey, I'm Daniela."
The woman nods. "I know. You better get in the house before she goes."
I run inside and head to the bedroom on the bottom floor.
Grandma has machines connected to her. Her skin is saggy and more wrinkles are there. Her eyes are sunken in and dark circles appear on her skin.
She starts to cough.
I run to her. "Grandma?"
She looks at me. "There's a letter..." cough. "In the..." cough. "... Top draw for you." She starts to cough. "Open it when..." cough. Cough. Cough. "... Gone."
"I will. Grandma, I don't want you to go. I'll be all alone." The flood gates open and I start crying.
