Chapter 1

I woke up tired as hell. I am running myself ragged. I’m interning at the hospital 4 days a week. I also work weekends as an EMT at the fire house. I work the graveyard shift. During the week I help out at Diego’s garage. But it will all be worth it. Not bad for a kid who grew up on the wrong side of Chicago. I closed my eyes and thought back to all the crap we did when we were younger. Man I’ve come a long way from that kid who helped to sell drugs, so he could help his old lady out.

I smile thinking of mom and my baby sister. Well not so much a baby anymore. At the age of 20, she is more a woman than baby. But she will always be my kid sister. I made myself get out of bed. It was now almost 3pm. I stretched and cracked my back. Damn I feel old. At 24 I should be in the prime of my life. But you know what they say. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

I was half way to the kitchen when there was a knock at my door. “Hold your horses” I yell out.  Who the hell is bothering me this early? “Hayley what the hell are you doing here this early?” I asked my sister.

“I am sick and tired of your mother trying to run my life. Plus it’s 3 in the afternoon.” Hayley yelled out all mad.

“What did she do know?” I asked on a sigh.

“She keeps watching what I eat. Telling me I’m too fat and will never find a man. I’m 20 fucking years old. I don’t need me a fucking man.”

I glare at her for using that language but mom does ride her ass all the time. She’s happy with herself so that’s all that matters to me. “So what do you want me to do about it?”

“I moved out. You either let me stay here with you. Or I’m going to go find me a man to stay with.”  My jaw dropped. What the hell, I was happy Sebastian was no longer here anymore now this.

“Wait, what do you mean find you a man?”

“Well, I figured I would kill 2 birds with one stone. I can find a man and get mom off my back and move in with him to get out of the house.”

“Listen Hayley that shit isn’t funny.” I saw her smirk. The little shit was using that. Thinking I would tell her to move in. But damn what other choice do I have? “You’ll be on your own tonight. I’m having dinner at Diego and Michelle’s house tonight.”

“Oh damn, you better call them and tell them you’re taking someone. I have always wanted to meet this other family you have. Your stingy ass never wanted to share them with me. Don’t they have a daughter that’s like 1 or 2 years older than me?”

“Yeah her name is Mia, a big pain in my ass. I don’t think you should come. She hates when I come and well having you there may be her breaking point.” I say irritated.

Haley smirked “sounds like I’m going to like this girl. Seems she already has your panties in a bunch. Interesting, mighty interesting I think.”

“I have no clue what you mean” I walked out of the room. She is just spoiled and doesn’t know her place.

Mia’s POV

“Oh hell no, you invited Liam to dinner? I say glaring at my dad. Augh, I am so tired of having him all up on my parents. Granted the first time he came over I was only 15 and he was 17. But he just seemed to take all my parents attention. Now I hate him. It doesn’t help that he is a wise ass about my anger.

I’m sick of all these males thinking they can run my life. I mean, what would you do? If growing up you had 6 brothers watching your every move.

Every time I turned around, one was there seeing what I was doing. Seeing what I was wearing. But I’m almost 22 and they can’t do or say shit now.

Hayley’s POV

I was so nervous going to meet Liam’s other family. I have heard so many nice things about them. But I worry they won’t like me. What if they’re judgmental like mom? Not that I give a shit if they are. I am happy with myself. I am not stick thin. I am curvy, granted maybe more than most. But I love myself and don’t give a crap what anyone else thinks.

So why the hell am I so worried. I thought as I took my contacts out. I am not going to put on a show for these people. I don’t have to spend my evening, with my eyes burning. In hopes they like me more, for not wearing my glasses. I shrug and “People can love me for me or take a hike.”

“What was that?” asked Liam from the other room.

“I said hurry the hell up bro.” Hahaha, “good save Hayley, just remember how special you are.” I tell myself as I look in the mirror.

I walked out of my room as he did to. “What the hell your wearing a white shirt and jeans. We look like we’re trying to match.” I huff as I remove my glasses to clean them on my shirt. Oh well, no time to change now. I was somewhat nervous on the ride over.

Liam told me more about this Diaz family and all the children they adopted before finally having Mia. It was a very sweet story.  We had finally arrived and as soon as we reached the door. It swung open and a very hot looking short girl glared at us. “Great you brought a freaking date. Like having you invade my life isn’t enough.” Then she looked me up and down, but her glare never wavered. “How much is he paying you to pretend to be his girl?” Then she looked at him. She then walked away, not even inviting us in.

“That is the ravenous Mia; she spews out nothing but venom.”  I just smiled at him. Hmm, was that a hint of jealousy I detected in her eyes?  I followed him inside and we hear Mia tell her Parents that Liam had brought a desperate girl willing to help him. Then she ran up the stairs.

“Liam, Haley, please ignore her. She has issues.” Mr. Diego tells us looking a bit angry. “Did you not introduce her as your sister?”

“Um, she didn’t give us time.” Liam tells him.

I see Mr. Diego gave his wife a look. She returned it opening her eyes slightly. Hmm, more interesting things I notice. Then they both look towards the stairs Mia had climbed. “Can we please not mention Hayley being your sister for tonight?” Mrs. Michelle asked and I tried not to laugh. Ooo seems we are going to have fun tonight at the expense of the little tigress.

Just a little preview. 

But I like Hayley and Mia. I knew Mia would be a fire ball for sure.
