Chapter One
AMY'S POV
" It's getting windy out there," Jack Bartlett, my grandpa announced as he came in from outside.
" Certainly," I agreed, grabbing a last slice of apple. " But I have to get my work done with the horses. Can you tell Georgie to meet me in the barn after breakfast?"
" Sure," Jack nodded, pouring some coffee in his cup.
" Thanks," I grabbed my hat, pulled on my boots, and headed into the yard.
My mother, Marion Fleming, founded Heartland when my sister Lou and I were young.
" Hey, boy," As I entered the barn I scratched Pheonix's muzzle. Pheonix and Georgie have quite the connection.
" I'm here." A familiar voice announced.
" You ate fast," I remarked.
Georgie shrugged. " Not very hungry when there is lots of barn work to be done!" At that point she grinned.
I smiled. " Let's get to work. We can take Spartan and Pheonix out first, okay?"
Georgie nodded and let herself into Pheonix's stall, talking quietly to him. Meanwhile, I went into Spartan's.
My mother died saving Spartan. We have a very special connection. He reminds me of Marion so much, and I love him to death.
A few minutes later Georgie and I both had our horses tacked up and we set out from the barn.
" Is it supposed to rain?" Georgie questioned, pointing to the sky. I shrugged. " I'm not sure, but it's getting pretty windy out here." At this point the wind threatened to tear my hat off my head and I put a hand on top of it to keep it down.
About an hour later, we returned to the barn, and by that time, the wind was even worse.
To make matters even more worse, Lyndy had just woken up from a nap and was very crabby.
" Here," I handed my baby daughter to Georgie. " A clients here."
" Hey!" A thin but tall women came smiling out of her trailer, leading a roan colored horse with white blaze on his forehead.
" Hi, there, you must be Sandy?" I asked.
" Yep," She nodded, and turned to her horse. " And this is Alma. She used to be a good cross country horse, and now she's acting up and rearing. You should've of seem us get her in the trailer." Sandy gave a short bark.
" But she's so pretty! I didn't think this kind of horse would act like this," Came a voice from behind me.
" Georgie! Keep Lyndy in the barn!" I exclaimed.
Sandy eyed my daughter warily. " Listen to Amy, girl," She frowned at Georgie. " There's no way of telling how Alma will act up."
Just as she said this, Alma started prancing on her toes, her eye's fixed on Lyndy.
And then, coming closer to Georgie and Lyndy, she reared.
Right at them.
