2. The Sound of Flute

As the night fell, Wei Wuxian ushered the fluff balls into their resting pen.

Smiling to himself, he entered Jingshi took a bath once again. Combed his wet long ebony black hair. Wearing Lan Zhan's white inner robe as a night wear, having difference in size the robe hung loosely on his—Mo Xuanyu's—small frame.

Having combed his hair, Wei Wuxian sat near the brazer, facing the bright amber glow of the flames in it, taking in the soft warmth it produced. Drying his long hair while combing through them, as they dry in the warmth.

Wei Wuxian seemed lost in his thoughts.

Finally, after his hair went dry, did he snap out of his trance.

Peeping out of the window of Jingshi, Wei Wuxian noticed that the sky was completely dark, moon began to rise, radiating the soft pale glow that gave every agitated soul solace.

Wei Wuxian sighed.

"Lan Zhan isn't back yet, must be busy." He whispered to himself.

He smiled, trying to distract himself from his partner's absence. He glanced at his  terrifying yet fascinating black, glaze surfaced, made with a fine craftsmanship, flute, the infamous Ghost flute ChenQing*

ChenQing*(陈情)= To express/to give a full account.

The ChenQing he crafted, out of sheer desperation.

The fine craftsmanship was the evidence of Wei Wuxian's skills the skills he possessed, the skills that still did it's work even in desperation, creating a refined and renowned flute, that was one of its kind.

Wei Wuxian still couldn't help but feel amused at his own craftsmanship. He couldn't understand even in the dire situation, how he managed to create a refined flute, with just a small dagger, that he took from a nearby corpse.

Shaking his head to get rid of the terrible thoughts Wei Wuxian grabbed a hold of ChenQing and wore his black outer robe and exited Jingshi.

Walking a little distance from their—which actually is Lan Zhan's—living quarter. Wei Wuxian tucked ChenQing to his waist belt and leaped to nearest the boundary wall of Cloud Recesses.

Standing on the wall, Wei Wuxian leaped to the roof of the establishment, on to the slate roof above Jingshi. Effortlessly and soundlessly landing on it.

Wei Wuxian turned around.

Facing the bright moon, Wei Wuxian smiled to himself and brought his flute to his lips and blew in it, producing a low melody. Slowly, the low melody increased in crescendo creating a shrill, pleasant to hear sound.

His fingers continued to run across the holes on the flute, in a breakneck speed, almost making it seem as if the fingers were just ghosting over the flute.

[The song Wei Wuxian is playing.
From TaiGekTou.]

Wei Wuxian played ChenQing, carefree of what was happening around him, while the cold night breeze blew his ebony black hair.

Some new—the ones who recently joined the GusuLan sect—juniors were resting after finishing their classes for the daycame out of their rooms on hearing the beautiful music to see who was playing flute at this time.

A junior with his fellows, followed the music and came across the scene of Wei Wuxian playing the flute his back facing them, his long hair swayed along with his black outer robe by the breeze, unaware of the curious eyes.

The juniors whispered to one another about who the unknown person can be.

One of them whispered "Holy cow! Who's this person, such excellence in music?"

Another whispered back "Maybe a new teacher?"

Another immediately refuted "No-no, Yizhen, they can't be a teacher, don't you see where he's standing?"

The one called Yizhen whispered back "Where, Hongyu-xiong?"

Hongyu answered "They are standing on the roof of Jingshi!"

Yizhen frowned "Jingshi?"

"Yes! Jingshi HanGuang-jun's living quarter."

"Oh! Fuck me! This person got some guts." Yizhen whisper-yelled.

Suddenly, they heard a series of footsteps approaching and quickly hid behind the doors of their rooms.

The footsteps got closer and they could hear excited whispers "Oh my god, his back!"

"He's back and we didn't know!"

A beaming, gentle voice whispered "I missed him so much can't wait to meet him!"

Suddenly, a loud voice whinned "He came back and did meet us!"

The gentle voice tried appeasing the loud one "Calm down, Jingyi it's alright. We were in the classes, he wouldn't want to disturb us that's why. Moreover tone down you voice or you'll be punished."

"But Sizhui--!" Jingyi tried protesting but calmed down by the look he got from his best friend.

Behind the closed doors, the group of juniors communicated through eyes one said "It's Da-shixiong and Er-shixiong!"

"They know the person?"

"They said 'he'!"

They continued listening, despite the rule 'Eavesdropping is forbidden.'

The footsteps stopped right in front of their doors and by then the flute music had stopped.

Sizhui smiled staring, at the his baba's back in silence. Which Jingyi broke with his delighted call "Senior Wei you're back!"

Sizhui sighed in defeat but didn't stop him since his baba turned around, smiled and jumped down of the roof, right in front of them.

Wei Wuxian said, his voice happy "Jingyi! A'Yuan! A'Li! A'Yang! A'Wei! A'Xu!"

The said juniors—which included Sizhui—tackled Wei Wuxian into a tight hug.

Wei Wuxian laughed brightly, hugging them all and said "Aya! I've been gone for not to long and my raddishes miss me so much?"

The juniors didn't respond just hugged him tighter.

The juniors, who were hidden heard all this and stared and each other wide-eyed.

Yizhen said through his eyes to Hongyu "Senior Wei? Wei? Wei--! Fuck me!"

Hongyu stared back "Holy! Wei? Wei Wuxian? The Yiling Patriarch?!"

Having met juniors and talked to them, helped Wei Wuxian in lifting his mood, after sending them back to their rooms. Wei Wuxian made his way back to Jingshi.

Halfway through his way back, he met Lan Wangji.

Wei Wuxian smiled brightly and said "Lan Zhan! I was just returning to Jingshi! Did you listen to my new song? Did you like it?"

Lan Wangji stared at him, his golden eyes filled with warmth, answered "Mn. Like it."

Wei Wuxian hugged Lan Wangji and said "Really? I love you Lan Zhan!"

"Mn. Love Wei Ying." Lan Wangji spoke carrying, Wei Wuxian back to their quarter.

After their nightly exercises, that are extremely important, exhausted Wei Wuxian slipped in slumber mumbled tiredly "Oh lord, Lan Zhan. I swear if your uncle finds out about this racket, he is going to Qi deviate."

Lan Wangji, warmly replied "En." and placed a soft kiss on his partner's forehead.

Wei Wuxian fell in to sleep, but what welcomed him was nightmare.

His mind wandered back to his days in the, hell on the world, LuanZhang Hills*

LuanZhang Hills* (乱葬岗)= Burial Mounds.

Wei Wuxian opened his eyes and examined his surrounding. Just one look and he knew he was trapped in a nightmare, a hell to the living.

'Burial Mounds.' he thought in terror.

He knew it was a dream and none of the anguish and torment he once suffered would repeat, but then again this place itself was enough for a man to loose his rationality, at best his life.

The day he was thrusted into this hell hole he expected death, but something far worst came.

Wei Wuxian tried to stand up but all his struggle was futile. His body was incorporeal, his ribs were broken, his legs were broken, his ankle was dislocated. Only his hands were still intact.

He dug his fingers into the soil, made of corpses and moved. The resentful energies noticed his movements and hovered above him.

The fierce corpses beneath him jerked their hands out from beneath the ground, took a hold of Wei Wuxian's dislocated ankle and pulled him back.

The pain of his dislocated increased tenfold with the forceful pull, Wei Wuxian wished to scream from the pain but then, suddenly he realised that he had lost his voice.

Wei Wuxian gasped in pain realising he couldn't possibly scream. His throat was parched.

(•)10 days later(•)

Wei Wuxian ran for his life, ran from the fierce corpses, ran from the vengeful ghosts, coming for his life.

As he ran, the corpses pulled him towards them, to shred him, to devour him. Wei Wuxian with all the strength he could muster, resisted the pull.

As he ran, body exhausted and broken, without food or water, just alive on willpower and terror. While running, Wei Wuxian didn't notice a skull on his way and stumbleb upon it. He fell, face first, more and more hands pulled his legs and flung him into the air, slamming him against a Yao.

Wei Wuxian closed his eyes, tears streaming down his cheeks, he released a strangled gasp.

His limp body slid down down the tree, his head slamming down on the ground. His powerlessness was killing him.

Then horrifying black ominously glowing tendrils of resentful energies grabbed his hands and legs, it's finger like branches traced through his body, and digging into his skin attempting to find an opening.

Wei Wuxian resolutely clamped his lips tightly refusing to let the resentful energies enter into his system.

His efforts proved futile as the resentful energies swarmed into his body through the hole on his chest where his golden core once lied, then as Wei Wuxian felt exhausted and could not hold onto his guards, the resentful energies slowly entered into his body through his three of the seven orifices.

When the resentful energies stopped entering, it furiously pulsated through his body, surging through his arteries and veins.

Wei Wuxian gasped "Out! Out! Get. out. of. my. body!" in vain.

The tendrils let go of him, Wei Wuxian lay on the ground full of corpses, motionless, not having energy to move, his eyelids dropped. He was tired.

He didn't know for how long he laid there unconscious, unguarded. Slowly, his body temperature started dropping. He knew he was close to death.

When suddenly, the resentful energies that lay dormant under his skin, inside his veins mixing with his blood, pulsated at a single place, attempting to shred his body.

Wei Wuxian snapped out of his near death situation yet he knew he was going to, inevitably, die. He whispered to himself "Circulate. Circulated it. Don't let it be stagnant. Circulate it."

~ ✼ ~ A long time later ~ ✼ ~

Wei Wuxian, snapped out of what felt like a nightmare.

He knew he couldn't afford to stay at this place. He stood up with much effort but discovered that all his injuries were pretty much gone, aside from the gaping hole on his chest.

He felt weird as if a part of his life, his soul was gone, a part of him.

He stood up and inspected his body, it looked ashen pale, so this, so frail that if not for his dirty red ribbon and now brown inner robe, he would have mistaken himself for a corpse.

He stood there confused.

Suddenly, a herd of fierce corpses tried catching him, but he ran away from them.

Slowly, more and more corpses crawled towards him. Wei Wuxian ran and ran, his pace not faltering, before his foot hit a rock and he fell down, unable to balance his body. Then with much pain he crawled away from the corpses.

An ashen white corpse crawled on top of Wei Wuxian and his opened his mouth, his greasy yellow teeth hovered over Wei Wuxian's defense less neck.

Wei Wuxian screamed but no sound came. At last he screamed desperately "Stop! Stop! Stop! I said fucking stop!"

Wei Wuxian woke abruptly, gasping for breath as strong arms throttled him.

"Wei Ying!" His lover shook him, before seeing him awake and pulling him into his arms.

Wei Wuxian couldn't utter a word, he knew it was a nightmare, but a part of his life, a life he lived once.

"Lan Zhan.." he whispered, as if to assure himself that he was safe, safe with his love.

His eyes wide, forehead covered in cold sweat, lips parted the sound came out was a broken sob, before he even knew it. But at least he had Lan Zhan with him, for him.

"Wei Ying, what happened?" Lan Wangji asked his voice laced in concern.

Wei Wuxian sobbed again Lan Wangji's chest, wetting it with his tears.

"Lan Zhan..I, I don't, I don't know, a nightmare, I'm sorry, I..sca,red y,you.." Wei Wuxian stammered between sobs.

Lan Wangji hugged Wei Wuxian tighter, pressing his head against his chest.

"Wei Ying." Cry, cry it out, cry to your heart's content.

So Wei Wuxian did. Lan Wangji rubbed circles on his back, soothingly and planted a soft kiss on his lover's forehead.

At last, when Wei Wuxian's sobs died down, he bit his lips and hiccuped, then whispered "I'm sorry, I.."

Wei Wuxian looked pitifully beautiful, tears dangling on his eyelashes, eyes glazed and swollen.

Lan Wangji's eyes darkened a little but gulped and supressed his desires and shook his head and answered "Between you and me there's no need for sorry and thank you."

Wei Wuxian giggled and said "Lan Zhan, I love you. What should I do with you playing with my heart like this?"

Lan Wangji's lips tugged in so small smile, that no one would be able to notice, if not Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian giggled and hugged his lover tightly.

Thinking 'It was just a nightmare, no one's going to know it ever, I have Lan Zhan, I'm not leaving him, he has suffered enough.'
