Peeking over Vincent's arm, Nelly could almost hear the gears turning in his head as he looked down at the membership slip in his gauntleted hand. The poor woman who seemed moments ago so over the moon about the fiends being dealt with, was now standing looking as confused as Vincent. Nelly was the only one who just seemed relatively okay with this situation, she had already got her membership, that happened the previous time they were all here, so it made sort of sense that the woman would reward Vincent with that. But the way he side eyed the money Nelly got had him seemingly trying to figure out how this was a fair deal, when he did just as much if not a little more than her.
"Thank you so much! If you need any more help, we'll be around for a little while I think..." Nelly beamed and looked pointedly up at Vincent, she was expecting something, and he gave nothing. He just gave a nod, pocketed the slip and turned and walked away just as silently; if not for the metallic clinking that came from each movement he made. Nelly looked awkwardly back at the woman, she whispered a quiet apology and ran after Vincent. The wall he was previously leaning against was clearly calling out to him, because that's where he was making for.
Nelly just sighed, seriously, he was just going to go lean against a wall for the time they were here? Running a hand down her face, she trotted after him. She was trying, maybe a little too hard to compensate for any awkward atmosphere that could've happened between them previously. "It's the same," her voice had Vincent stopping, he was near the mooring, they could both see the Broncho. "Your membership and what I got, it's the same. If you wanted to buy it outright, it's about 300 gil." Nelly explained, she didn't know when Vincent was last out and about in the wider world, considering he said he'd been around for a while, a lot could've changed since last time. Also, she had zero clue if he knew that the membership cost that much.
He listened to her; Vincent stood motionless as ever apart from his cloak moving in the warm breeze coming off the crystal blue water behind him. Nelly just stared up at him, unblinkingly just waiting and watching, when he remained silent, she groaned and hung her head. Why was he now being absolutely impossible? Holding up her hands, Nelly turned and gestured behind herself. "Let me buy you a drink." She didn't know if he had money, but considering the woman just gave her 300 gil, the least she could do was buy Vincent a drink. Not only that, if the man wouldn't change into weather appropriate gear, then the least he could do was hydrate and not end up keeling over from the overbearing sun.
That had his red eyes flicking over the top of her head and looking towards the direction her hands were still gesturing to. Nelly didn't think it was a hard thing to agree or disagree to, but apparently it took longer to think about than she ever thought, in the end he did nod though and that had her grinning up at him. She was going to take that as a small victory, all of this was a small victory; she'd managed to get him away from his new favourite leaning place, regardless of the fiends and the concern he gave her, it was still a win. But also, now she was managing to get him away from that damn wall and somewhere else.
Nelly pouted in thought as they walked towards the bar, maybe he was humouring her? She looked up at him from the corner of her eyes, it wasn't like she could see much of his features, his cloak, bandana and now his long dark hair shielded him. With a sigh, Nelly shook her head, she'll take humouring, as awful as that might be, but she'd take it.
At least inside the bar it was cooler, the wooden flooring radiated a coolness that the outside sun couldn't seem to taint. Being fully opened windowed, no glass being present at all, it did allow a fresh breeze to come in. All in all, the bar was the coolest place that was probably here, even Johnny's caught the afternoon sun which made it extremely hot at times.
Even before Nelly could open her mouth, Vincent was already sitting down at a table. She slowly sat down opposite to him, he seemed to have that habit, apparently. Just going off and doing something regardless of others present. Nelly softly sighed, maybe he was still off from earlier? She had said she wasn't afraid of him, she was worried for him, there was a huge difference. "What'll be?" She crossed her arms on the table, enjoying the cool wood as she crossed her ankles underneath her chair. From the minute shake of his head, Nelly just looked despairingly at him. She resisted saying something, she just hung her head and leaned it against her crossed arms. Did he honestly just humour coming with her, to just sit and do nothing?
"Do you really think an alcoholic drink is a wise thing for me to have?" Vincent's low voice had Nelly tilted her head on her arms, her eyes opening and looking up at him curiously. He remained looking down at her, leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed against his chest. He sounded honest enough, with his questioning of her, but also his eyes just looked distantly down at her. If being pushed to an edge with fighting almost had him losing himself, then what barriers he had up would probably get obliterated if alcohol came into the picture. Alcohol had a brilliant ability to show others another's true self.
Not that Nelly was saying what Vincent turned into was his true self, but they all didn't need that happening, especially Vincent considering the agony it caused him. Sitting slowly back up, Nelly looked at him plainly, "I didn't even think about that, I'm sorry." She was sorry, like they didn't necessarily have to have alcohol in a bar, yes, primarily it's clearly the idea here considering everyone present was on holiday. "Leave it to me," Nelly pushed herself out of her chair when all she got for her apology was a tilted head, he seemed acceptant of it and evidently had nothing else to say.
Nelly walked a little slumped to the bar, he was silent anyway, awfully silent unless he clearly had something to say, but this seemed worse. Like at least earlier they seemed amicable, but with how he was now acting, Nelly could physically feel the barrier pushing back at her and her attempts at talking or trying to talk. Vincent had gone and built up another wall, apparently. This was one-upping Cloud and his social issues, Nelly liked Cloud, but he made being friends with him hard just with how blunt and stoic he could be. Didn't mean he still wasn't a good friend and had a good heart, he just...Nelly didn't know, he just defaulted to being a blank slate. They literally could be loner blank slates together.
That was mean of her to think, Cloud really was a good friend, he'd do anything for anyone even if payment was jokingly thrown out, he really did have a good heart, and Nelly was rather sure Vincent probably was the same if given half the chance. Someone who was bad, wouldn't offer a potion constantly, regardless of it being a gift she gave, and then resort to curing. That wasn't the action of a bad person. But it seemed that Vincent was fine with distance, keep contact to a minimal.
Hearing the clink of the glass on the table had Vincent opening his eyes and frowning, Nelly just smiled and sat down. So, the overly colourful drink being almost glared at by Vincent shouldn't have amused Nelly so much, but it did. She sipped at her straw, the rainbow-coloured drink tasted tropical, fruity and in this heat so welcoming. "Listen," Nelly tapped a finger on the table, the action and her voice got Vincent stopping glaring at the drink, instead he looked at her with a hard look. "I'm not a massive drinker, I begrudge how expensive it is, and I don't actually like the taste. It's non-alcoholic. Only because we are here, doesn't mean we can't at least look like we fit in with this bar scene." Nelly explained while sipping at her drink when she finished speaking.
Vincent seemed almost pained by something, his eyebrows furrowed, and a gloved hand appeared from underneath his cloak. "Those women earlier on were trying a similar thing."
Nelly almost snorted while drinking, coughing lightly and patting herself on the back. She looked sadly at him, "Yeah...no, I'm not forcing change on you, Vincent. Just a mocktail." She said, her voice a little hoarse because of her coughing, but she gave him a quick thumbs up before watching as he seemingly was daring to try it. "In truth, not a clue what you like. So, I completely winged it. If you don't like it, I'll happily get you something else." Nelly leaned against her palm, she took to stirring the straw in her drink, listening to the ice cubes clink together.
Vincent reached up, a gauntleted finger pulled the collar of his cloak down, while his gloved hand picked the glass up. He just looked at her a little strangely, Nelly's eyes widened, and she looked at him almost excitably. With a small sigh, he shut his eyes and took a chance. It wasn't like he thought she was lying to him; she had been quite honest really throughout the short time they'd known each other. But the overly orange and pink liquid was hugely suspicious to him, but it was actually not bad, refreshing actually considering it was warm here.
Looking at Nelly when she threw her hands up, Vincent even heard her boots scuff and thump back to the floor, "Success!" She whispered happily to herself, "You like it, right?" She still looked incredibly excitable, she was going to say he did because he hadn't spat it out, or pulled a disgusted face, so this was definitely a win.
Vincent gave a small hum and a nod, that had her fidgeting happily in her chair, to Vincent it looked like she was doing some sort of celebratory dance, even if that was more of an odd shuffle. He was just going to leave her to it, releasing his collar and sitting back, he looked around them. Everyone seemed to be having a fun time, a couple of people with guitars were playing chilled music in a corner and some people were dancing, even some of the workers were dancing; probably in an effort to try and persuade others up...
Flicking his eyes back to Nelly when she spoke up, Vincent found himself thinking over what she had said. "You can just sell that membership thing, if you want?"
"Are you saying I need the money?" Vincent asked, his head tilting slightly as he turned his full attention back to her. Nelly's eyes widened and she actually let out a quiet sound that sounded like an eep, which had him raising an eyebrow, even more so when she slapped her hands over her face and quietly groaned. Though peeking out from her fingers, thinking she'd actually offended him, she removed her hands and looked at him curiously; his eyes were narrowed in such a way that had her suspecting he was smirking behind his collar, if not smirking than maybe, dare she think it, smiling.
"Don't! I thought I'd upset you..."
"I can take a lot more than that," Vincent shut his eyes with a quiet inhale.
"You shouldn't have to," Nelly said offhandedly, fidgeting in her seat, crossing one leg over the other as she turned in her seat, drink in hand and looked around. She hadn't really paid mind to those who were in here with them, some seemed definitely worse for wear already. She was busy assessing the area, that she missed Vincent's eyes opening slowly and just looking her way. Clearly sensing eyes on her eventually, Nelly looked back his way and looked around and behind herself before looking back at him. He was looking at her in such a way, she didn't know if he was looking through her deep in thought, his expression looked hugely thoughtful, but also like he was trying to figure something out.
Nelly wasn't going to question it, maybe he just wasn't used to someone saying normal, kind things to him? She may not know Vincent as well as the others, but no one should willingly accept the fact they could take damage and insults like it was second nature, or even have a gauge or limit, or even a ranking on the level of bad such things were or could be.
She was about to say something when she jumped because of an outburst beside them. Nelly shook her hand and frowned at the pair, her drink spilt a little and she wasn't too happy about that. Clearly someone was betting on a casual came of Queen's Blood, and they lost and weren't happy about it. Regardless, who Nelly presumed was the loser stormed off shouting, and the winner collected his winnings and ran after his friend. People did watch them go, some even stepping out of their way. In truth, Nelly thought fights were maybe common here...it clearly wasn't the most perfect place in the world, despite tourism trying to say otherwise.
Glancing back at Vincent, Nelly just put her glass down and pointed to the side. He was still just looking at her, though eventually he looked over to the board. "Do you play? I am bad, and no, this isn't even a ploy of me trying to fob you off; I literally am awful. Cloud is quite good, Barrett gets a bit too into it...there was a competition coming over, and he got...very, very competitive. You know who is quite good, and I'm surprised by it? Red. Literally, Nanaki is really lowkey a good player." Nelly just sort of rambled, she couldn't help it, Vincent just staring unblinkingly at her was putting her on the spot.
"So, it won't be much of a challenge?" Vincent asked, Nelly slowly looked away from the forgotten gameboard to him with an incredulous look. He even sounded amused, maybe she was wrong, maybe he wasn't humouring her but with her. She had hoped that the experience earlier was overlooked quickly and forgotten about, she really didn't want him thinking she was scared of him.
"Wow," she eventually said with a laugh, "That's mean, Vincent. You could humour me, and my lack of skills."
He tilted his head in thought there, his eyes flicking over her before he let out a sigh and shook his head. "You'd never learn to get better, if I did that."
"So, you're going to beat me at a game...in hopes that I get better? Cruel to be kind sort of thing, right?" Nelly asked while standing and going to the board, no one was seemingly wanting it, so she was taking it. None of the employees were stopping her either, so she returned with it and popped it on the table. Vincent had at least reached across and moved her drink aside to make room for it.
"How did you do in the competition?" Vincent asked, watching Nelly's honeyed eyes flick awkwardly from him to her drink and then her just fidgeting with a pouch on her sword belt. "Nelly, how did you do?" Vincent watched her pull her deck out of the pouch and just look awkward, although she perked up hearing her name and looked at him differently then. Vincent didn't quite get it, but it was the first time he'd said her name.
"I did rubbish. I told you, I'm not very good." Nelly replied though she smiled slowly and flicked over her cards, Vincent actively asking questions was new, she wasn't complaining, she quite liked it, if only he could be similar with the others, then they might not want to act distantly around him.
There was a low hum from him, a thoughtful sound which had Nelly looking at him, Vincent seemed to look at her as sympathetically as he could, he knew full well this match wasn't going to last long, but it was at least a good way to waste time while everyone else was elsewhere doing whatever. This was fine, being tucked away in the bar listening to the musicians play and people try to dance drunkenly or jokingly was fine; it was a quiet little bubble of just them, Nelly's overexerting concentration, and Vincent's ease with countering her moves without much of a struggle. Her discouraged face or when she was really concentrating was amusing, Vincent didn't outwardly show it, but it was, she was really trying. She just...no offence to her, but she really wasn't the best at this game, and it wasn't hard for Vincent to beat her.
"There you two are!" Hearing the loud voice of Barrett had Nelly stopping glaring at her cards and smiling his way. Barrett looked at her pained face and leaned against the back of her chair, he looked at her cards then at the board before grimacing. "Oh, sorry to tell you this, but I think he's got ya beat."
"He's beaten me three times!" Nelly exclaimed, sounding despairing and sad.
Barrett winced this time and ran a hand down his face, "Why are you still tryin'?" Unless she was a glutton for being beaten, Barrett narrowed his dark eyes at her and leaned down to her level, to anyone else it would've been amusing to see considering how tall he was, and that he basically had to double in on himself to lean his hand against his knee and look at her seriously. Nelly blinked wide eyes full of confusion over what he was doing, Barrett let out a thoughtful low sound and nodded. "A'ight, move aside when you're done."
"I am done." Nelly practically whimpered, Vincent had already won, she had no more moves and she just slumped in her seat before picking herself up and out, thanks to Barrett putting a hand on her back and encouraging her to move. Nelly packed up her cards, grabbed a seat and dragged it around.
"Hey, why'd you go over there?" Barrett got comfortable in the seat and had already hunted out his deck, he looked sceptically at Nelly who'd got a chair and popped it down beside Vincent. Even Vincent seemed a little confused but just shuffled his deck.
Nelly looked at Barrett plainly before pointing a thumb up at Vincent, "I wanna see how this guy plays." Not that she thought she'd unravel the mystery of Vincent's play, but also Nelly smirked at Barrett knowingly, did he want her by his side to help him beat Vincent? Barrett just sighed through his nose and looked back at her; the expression wasn't denying the hint Nelly was getting which just amused her.
"You saw it yourself, when you got beat how many times?" Barrett seemed smug over that, Nelly just narrowed her eyes at him, Barrett wasn't going to comment any further but watching her peek over Vincent's elbow and Vincent relenting in being less tense and shielding of his cards so she could see was amusing to the gun-armed man.
"Well, it's different when not playing. Plus, I'd like to see you try and beat him. You couldn't even beat Cloud." Nelly huffed and crossed her arms, knowing full well Barrett would get riled up about that, he just shot her a look, grumbled quietly under his breath and commenced playing. She shouldn't find it amusing joking at Barrett's expense, but she could see he didn't take it to heart because he smirked and shook his head at her. Nelly just grinned back before looking over Vincent's elbow and smiling up at him, waiting curiously to see what card he played and how. If he minded her being close and almost leaning against him, he didn't say, nor did he deter her, there was still a small space between them to keep an amicable distance as the game continued on.
