Chapter 65: The Destruction of Konoha

At Mount Myōboku, Naruto wondered whether the Akatsuki would ever attack Konoha just to find him, while Fukasaku assured him that no such thing would happen; even if it did, Kōsuke, the messenger toad, would alert them. Fukasaku then decided to begin training on the third and final step to using Sage Mode in battle - fusing Fukasaku on his shoulder.

In Konoha, Danzō alerted his Anbu Root unit that they would be hiding underground until Pain's assault came to an end, adding that they would not be providing any support as the village's crisis would result in his promotion to Hokage, and thus any casualties would be considered as sacrifices for the greater good.

Meanwhile, Inoichi continued his interrogation and probing of Yūdachi's mind, finding a memory in which Yūdachi and Ryūsui delivered a corpse to Konan, who was to deliver it to Pain himself. The Konoha Torture and Interrogation Force was then attacked by Pain's Animal Path, who summoned a giant rhino to destroy the building. Inoichi recognised her as the corpse in Yūdachi's memories, and fleed with Ino and Shizune, who were protected by Katsuyu; Shizune, however, wondered how that Pain was able to summon when Jiraiya had already defeated the one that could. Ibiki and the others decided to attempt defeating the Animal Path, who summoned a giant, a giant multi-headed dog and a giant snake-tailed chameleon. The Anbu unit attempted to defeat the dog, only for it to survive and continue its rampage.

Ibiki trapped the giant using his Summoning: Iron Maiden technique while binding the Animal Path and summoning a torture chamber. He attempted to use pain to extract information, only to realise that the Path's body was cold and responsive as a corpse. Easily breaking free of the shackles, Pain told Ibiki that he shall know what true pain is, and proceeded to his stomach as a conduit to summon a giant drill-beaked bird.

The Anbu unit attempted to defeat the giant multi-headed dog once more, only for the dog to break free again; the giant rhino also broke free of the Iron Maiden.

Back at Mount Myōboku, Fukasaku attempted to fuse with Naruto, only for the Nine-Tailed Fox to reject him, forcing Naruto to find an alternate method of acquiring natural energy during battle.

Naruto then attempted to run while gathering natural energy in order to test whether he can activate Sage Mode when on the move, only to fail. Fukasaku told him apologetically that the method would never work and claimed that Sage Mode was not for everyone. After seeing the message Jiraiya left on Fukasaku's back, Naruto tells him that it was also a message from Jiraiya telling Naruto to never give up. Fukasaku attempted to explain that the impossible simply couldn't be done, comparing it to looking left and right at the same time. Naruto was stunned when he heard those words and exclaimed that there was a way after all.

Meanwhile, back in the human world, team Ebisu noticed the damage being wrought on their village by Pain, while Konohamaru decides to join the battle using a new technique that Naruto had taught him. Shortly after Shikamaru had told him that it was time for him to start being a teacher, Naruto decided to teach Konohamaru the Rasengan. As Naruto began explaining the three-part process, Konohamaru initially believed it to be a new Sexy Technique; Naruto, however, told him that it was a powerful, A-ranked technique. Moegi and Udon, however, convinced Konohamaru not to enter the fray and that as genin, they should simply evacuate the villagers to a safe shelter, prompting Konohamaru to recall when he was among those being evacuated during the Konoha Crush.

As he helped rescue an old lady from the rubble, Konohamaru witnesses two chūnin being attacked by the Naraka Path, who interrogates them regarding Naruto's whereabouts and proceeds to rip the tongues out of those who are withholding information. After accidentally revealing his location, the Naraka Path begins to close in on him. Konohamaru's sensei, Ebisu, engaged in combat against Pain in order to give Konohamaru time to escape. Konohamaru was unable to move out of fear and witnessed his master being defeated by Pain, who threatened to kill Ebisu if he did not disclose information about Naruto.

Ebisu told Pain that when he first met Naruto, he thought of him as someone who would interfere with Konohamaru's training, only for Naruto to prove himself as a shinobi who could impart lessons to Konohamaru that he could not, and that he would not divulge anything about a fellow Konoha shinobi to Pain. Pain decided to kill Ebisu for his silence, but Konohamaru saves him by throwing kunai at the Naraka Path's arm.

The Naraka Path was easily able to subdue Konohamaru, and summoned the King of Hell in order to extract information about Naruto. However, Konohamaru revealed himself to be nothing more than a shadow clone as the real Konohamaru, along with another shadow clone, rushed at the Naraka Path and struck him in the gut with a rasengan, leaving Ebisu shocked and surprised as to how and when Konohamaru learned such a technique. Konohamaru then told the Naraka Path that his name was Konohamaru Sarutobi and to never forget it.

"Oh no!" A shriek suddenly caught their attention as they turned their head to see Nia running toward them, stopping in front of Konohamaru. "Are you guys okay? What happened out here?!"

"Big sister, Nia!" Konohamaru grinned and pointed a thumb at himself. "Guess what?! You'll never believe what I just did!"

"Though what you did was great, we shouldn't stay here a minute longer!" Ebisu exclaimed. "Nia, you're a guardian of the Nine-Tails! You're one of the ones these monsters are after."

"Yes, I know, but... there's still people who are trapped under rubble, being attacked, and unable to flee to the evacuation shelter! I need to help them!"

"You mustn't! Just look at that belly of yours," Ebisu pointed. "You're pregnant, aren't you?"

"WHAAAA?!" Konohamaru gasped. "PREGNANT?!"

He then eyed Nia's stomach.

"Now that I think about it, I have noticed how your tummy gotten a little bigger. I thought it was because you were getting even fatter, but pregnant? I would've never guessed that in a million years!"

"Yes..." Nia rested a hand on her belly. "Me and Naruto are having babies... They're twin girls..."

"TWINS?!" Konohamaru's eyes were wide.

Nia nodded.

"In any case," Ebisu spoke. "It's much too dangerous for either one of you to be here right now. Please go to the evacuation shelter and let the rest of us handle things from here."

"But sensei, I can't stand around there doing absolutely nothing!" The Sarutobi argued.

"Konohamaru!" The older man raised his voice and narrowed his eyes.

Nia looked behind her to see the Naraka Path unconscious against a side of a building.

"Don't tell me.." She gasped. "Did one of you guys take the enemy down?"

"It was yours truly!" Konohamaru once more grinned and pressed his thumb against his chest. "I took him down with my very own rasengan!"

"What?!" Nia turned her head to him. "You were finally able to master it?! So soon?!"

"Geez, big sister, you make it seem like I wasn't capable of doing that!"

"It's just... I imagine that technique to be hard to do, but I'm not surprised that someone as hardworking as you was able to pull it off. Amazing, Konohamaru."

"Aww," The genin blushed and rubbed the back of his head awkwardly. "I mean, i know i'm cool and all but the sudden praise from you makes me feel all awesome."

Nia smiled briefly before that smile faded and she grasped the boy's wrist.

"Now c'mon," She said. "Like Ebisu-sensei said, it's too dangerous for us to be out here a minute longer. You had your time to shine and help out, but like he said, him and everyone else will help those in need. We need to trust in their words and abilities as a shinobi."

"Whaaaat? But wasn't it you that gave a speech about how we should help protect the people of this village even if our lives are in danger or something like that?!" The brown-haired boy questioned.

"Yes, but like I said, we're just gonna have to believe and trust in our comrades to take care of things. Now let's go!"

Nia dragged the young boy by the wrist as he whined for her to let him go. Ebisu breathed a sigh of relief as he watched the young ones go. He would then, however, fall unconscious.

Elsewhere, Tsume Inuzuka and her dog Kuromaru, along with her son Kiba and his dog Akamaru, attempted to attack the Preta Path with their Fang Over Fang. The Preta Path used the body of the first Animal Path to shield the attack while he fleed. At the same time, Shino, his father, and another member of his clan engaged in combat against Konan, who used paper clones riggered with explosive tags in an attempt to kill them. In the meantime, Pain's Deva Path arrived on the roof of the Hokage's office in order to speak with Tsunade.

Tsunade recognised the Deva Path as Yahiko, one of the Ame Orphans she had met long ago, and Pain was amused that she remembered him. After expressing their conflicting views on peace, Pain was visibly angered by Tsunade's refusal to surrender the Nine-Tails and accept Akatsuki's offer to surrender.

Elsewhere, Ino, Inoichi and Shizune were uncovering the truth behind the Six Paths of Pain when the Human Parth arrived and killed Shizune by absorbing her soul, although he managed to extract information from her mind and discovered that Naruto was at Mount Myōboku. Having discovered Naruto's location, the second Animal Path summoned Konan and five Paths, save the Deva Path, to the forest outside the village.

At Mount Myōboku, Gamatama informed Naruto and Fukasaku that Kōsuke, the messenger toad they left at Konoha, was deceased, since his name has disappeared from the toad register. Fearing that the Akatsuki were attacking Konoha, Fukasaku told Naruto to get ready to defend the village as he tasked Gamaden to use the Distant Body Water portal to transport himself immediately to Konoha, where he was to instruct Shima to summon the forces from Mount Myōboku.

In Konoha, Tsunade angered Pain when the former claims that while Konoha's actions in the past may not have been just, they had already experienced pain. Declaring that Konoha shall know pain for what they did to Yahiko, he notified Konan that he was going to use that technique, and proceeded to shut down the other five bodies as his Deva Path flew into the sky and performed a large-scale almighty push on the village.

"KYAAA!" Nia screamed as Konohamaru summoned numerous amount of clones to help shield her and himself from the tearing of Konoha as they were forced to their knees with the clones forming a dome-shaped pile around them.

"Don't worry, I'll protect you!" The genin shouted as he held onto the girl as strongly as he could.

Some clones flew into the air or were smashed by debris and disappeared. Still though, Konohamaru did his best to make sure Nia and her babies were safe.

Soon, when everything calmed itself, the clones looked around and gasped, hopping off the two and pushing away pieces of rubble that had fallen on them.

"The village..." Konohamru's eyes widened and quivered as he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

Nia straightened herself up and observed the area herself, her eyes also growing wide.

"No way..." She gasped.

The village had been reduced to a massive crater.

"Big Sister, are you okay?" Konohamaru asked with a worried look in his eyes.

"Yes," Nia answered.

"How about the babies?"

Nia rested a hand on her stomach. "I think they're fine. Thanks for asking. How about you though? Are you okay?"

"Oh, don't worry about me. I'm A okay!"

"Thanks for saving us, Konohamaru."

"You bet!" The genin grinned. "Big Brother Naruto would kill me if I ever let something happen to you or his babies!"

Nia gave a small smile, but it immediately dropped when she observed the nothingness that was Konoha.

Meanwhile, Sakura was saved from the blast by Katsuyu and shed tears as she noticed the ruins around her.

"No way..." She dug some dirt in her hands. "Someone... Anyone..."

She then bent over in tears, crying out, "NARUTOOOOO!"

As if on cue, Naruto arrived in Sage Mode, along with Fukasaku, Gamakichi, Gamabunta, Gamahiro and Gamaken.

A/N: Ahhhh shit, we're at that part ahdhsjdgrysbh. Tbh, idk how I'm gonna do this. I might just summarize it cause y'all can watch the anime but when we get to that Hinata part, everyone's looking forward to that part lmao so ig I'll write it out. Maybe.
