Chapter 19: The Poisonous Mushroom — Naruto's Sick Day
"Ugggh! This is the worst!" Naruto groaned as a washcloth was on his forehead and he was laying in bed sick as a dog.
"I told you not to eat that mushroom, but you did," Nia shook her head as she sat near the genin with a glass of water in her hand.
"It just looked... really good, ya know?"
"That doesn't mean it's edible. You need to look pass the appearance of things, Naruto. The mushroom we were looking for wasn't pleasing to the eye, but it was the healthy one to eat." Nia lightly scolded the blonde as she helped him sit up and tilted the glass gradually up as he began sipping the water slowly.
When she was done, she noticed there was some vomit on his jacket and as she wore her gloves, she helped him out of it and placed it in a basket where she would wash it for him later. Looking into his closet, Nia then grabbed him a black shirt with an orange swirl at the center of it and placed it on him.
"Your food will be done in a little while, all right?" She told him gently, "For now, let me just change this bucket for you. You've been vomiting a lot."
As she did that, Naruto waited for her return and when she came back, she placed a new bucket by his side then took the cloth off his forehead to wet it again with cold water, squeeze the extra water out, then place it back onto him as he sighed in relief.
"Curly Brow," He talked as she began to take out some bland crackers for him to eat while he waited for his food, "You're... an angel, ya know?"
"Oh no..." The girl began to blush while smiling to herself, "I'm no angel. I just like to do whatever I can for you. I'll always be here to take care of you when you're sick."
"What? You really mean that?" Naruto weakly replied before wincing.
"Of course I do," Nia answered with a smile as she kissed his cheek then gently lowered him back onto his pillow, "I promise."
Feeling touched, the genin grew red as his lips curved upwards.
"I promise to do the same for you too, ya know?"
"Mhm," The girl understood then placed her hand on his cheek, "Okay, why don't you get some rest now? I gotta go back and keep preparing your food, all right? If you need something, just ring this bell I'm putting beside you, okay?"
"Yeah... thank you."
"No problem, I just hope you feel better real soon. I'm so worried about you."
"Don't worry about me, I'll be in perfect shape in no time, thanks to you, Sweetie."
"That relieves me," Nia sighed happily, "I'll do my best for you, Naruto."
However, some time later, Naruto clung onto a orange plastic bucket as if it were a life raft. His stomach felt like the bag in a set of bag-pipes being vigorously squeezed. With a heaving lurch of his stomach another small mouthful of bile dribbled from his quivering lips into the waiting pool of rancid vomit.
"Guuhh..." Waves of heat coursed through his blood, a cold sweat glistened in his gaunt features. His eyes sunken and his skin sallow, everything ached, everything sagged. The guy felt miserable.
"My poor baby," Nia was at his bedside, wiping his mouth with a rag before helping him sip a bit of water at a time again.
After that was finished, she would place his bucket to the ground and fluff his pillow before the genin plopped back onto it.
"I-I'm sorry," He apologized. "Our date got... c-cut short too cause o-of... me, ya know?"
"You don't need to apologize. Just focus on getting better. I'll be here the entire time until you feel better, all right? And like I said before, when I go into another room for whatever reason and you're in need of help or need to use the bathroom, just ring this bell next to you, okay?"
"S-Sure, but seriously though... you were so happy the entire time we were out and now you're stuck taking care of me for the next day or so cause I was being careless. Not only that, but weren't you supposed to sub in for Iruka-sensei at the academy later on?"
"Yes, but you need to stop stressing over the little things. I'm just glad you didn't eat a mushroom that could kill you. I'm grateful that you're only suffering from the most minor symptoms. Also... I have no problem spending my day taking care of you. So please... just focus on recovering."
Naruto nodded, trying to not have such shallow breathing. He then turned his head, giving her a weak smile while reaching out to hold her hand.
"Is there anything you need me to do for you at this moment? Anything at all?" Nia asked, slightly flustered over having her hand being held.
"D-Do you mind... ru-rubbing... my feet, ple-please?"
"Of course, I'll massage them for you," Nia gave a smile before sitting on his bed across his feet, and picking one up, began to do what was requested of her.
She smoothly rotate her thumbs over the bottom of his foot, earning a hesitant sigh of relief from the blue-eyed ninja. One hand began coaxing the top part of his foot while the other relaxed his sole and heel.
A few minutes passed before she attended his other foot, spending a couple more minutes giving his other foot the same treatment. She changed her usual motion and moved her thumb over the bottom side of his feet, catching the blonde off guard for a bit. He let out a small smile as he felt her watched in shock as he rub his toes individually, gently popping each of them causing him to give out a slight moan. "Mmmm... that feels nice."
Hearing this, the girl giggled.
"Why'd you make that sound so sexual?" She continued the massage.
Naruto chuckled. "Sorry... I was... just mess-messing with ya. I wa-wanted to ea-ease the mood."
However, a faint blush slowly spread across the bridge of his nose.
Noticing this, Nia decided to comment about it.
"Am I being too rough? Why is your face red, baby?"
"Oh um, no... It's just... you're..."
"I'm what?"
"Erm... just come over here," The blonde patted the spot next to him.
Nia hesitated.
"I don't think I should relax with you just yet, honey," She stood out of her chair and headed to the stove where she had been cooking brown rice. "You gotta eat first."
Since it had been settling there for quite some time, she placed some into a bowl and went back over to the genin's bedside.
"You sure it's alright for me to eat right now?" He questioned, watching as the girl picked some of the rice up with her chopsticks.
"The medic said you should be good to eat after a few hours... you're good to do so right now."
With that, Nia helped to sit him up, getting him to open his mouth as she gently began to feed him.
Naruto nibbled it, pausing before taking any more. He wanted to make sure his stomach wouldn't get upset and when it appeared it was safe for him to take another bite, he was assisted in doing so.
"Be sure to take little bites at a time okay?" She reminded him softly. "Eat too fast and you might upset your stomach."
"Yeah, I know... thanks a lot for this; I owe you one big time."
"No, you don't owe me anything. I'm doing this because I want to, so please... there's no need for you to pay me back at all."
With that, the girl set the bowl down in favor of letting him drink in some more water. When that was done, Naruto lightly placed his head back on the pillow.
"How's your head feeling right now?" Nia then took the rag off his forehead and rested her palm on it. "Did the cold rag help at all?"
"A little, but... my head is still pounding for the most part," The genin mumbled, closing his eyes.
Hearing this, Nia grabbed the thermometer and placed it under his tongue, waiting for it to go off. When it did, she frowned at what it read.
Still a little over a hundred and three degrees Fahrenheit... the poor guy...
"How am I?" Naruto glanced over at her.
Nia gave him a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry... you'll be just fine, I promise."
Briefly, the blonde smiled back before lowering it back down to a straight face.
"Say... can I ask you something?"
"Hm? Of course. Would you like me to do something for you?"
"No, but... I was just wondering... how are you?"
"How am I? I guess I'm fine but I'm just a little worried over-"
"No," The genin shook his head. "I mean how have you been lately? Has anything been bothering you?"
Nia shook her head also.
"Well aside from all that crazy stuff when Fuyuka attacked the village... no."
"I haven't heard you feel upset... over your appearance in a long time. I'm just wondering if-"
"I'm not the same person I was when we first met, you know... The reason I haven't felt upset about it is cause I've gained confidence in myself, so I don't see what's the point in me crying about it. Besides, I got the cutest guy ever to return my feelings. I'm never gonna complain again!"
Naruto slowly sat up and rested his back against the wall.
"Yeah, but... I'm just a little worried. I mean, I know you've grown a lot, but... you were so depressed about it and you had a lot of issues because of your appearance and cause how horribly you were treated by others due to that. I just need to know if you're truly-"
"Yes... I am," The girl interjected. "I don't have issues like that anymore, honey. That was a long time ago, so I'd like to keep it that way, please. I'm literally all better now. No self esteem issues, no self-hatred, no depression, no nothing — I've overcome all of that. Sure, I may get a little down every now and then and snap at someone if they disrespect me, but I'm doing just fine."
The blonde lowered his eyes as he slightly turned his head away.
"T-That's great..." He croaked.
Nia tilted her head.
"Is... something wrong?"
"No... I just..."
"You just what?"
"Just snuggle with me now, all right?" The genin widened his arms. "Come here..."
"I don't know, Naruto... I feel like you should have the whole bed to yourself. You're sick... you should be able to have all the space. Besides, I have a bit more cleaning to do."
"Nia, do you just... never give yourself a break or something? You always hop from doing one thing to another for me like non stop. It's like you feel forced to do all these things you actually don't really wanna do. You need to stop overworking yourself. I can tell you're exhausted. Your eyes are red, ya know."
"I don't do everything that I do cause I feel forced to. I'm just doing what I have to do to keep this place clean and doing absolutely everything I got to to keep this relationship going strong. I don't care what I have to do, I'm gonna do every little and big thing possible."
"But you don't need to! That's the point!" The blonde was annoyed. "Quit acting like I'm gonna break up with you any second of the day. You don't need to try so damn hard. Give yourself a damn break."
"That's not what it is! I do it cause I want to, so please, let's stop with the bickering," Nia replied. "You'll only make yourself get stressed and worsen your condition. I told you already, I don't have issues anymore and I'll be just fine. Time heals wounds."
Naruto just glared at her before dropping to his side with his back turned toward her and lifted his sheet over his shoulders.
Nia sighed.
"Listen... all I'm trying to do is be a good girlfriend, all right? Seriously, what is so wrong about that?"
"Just drop it, all right?"
"No, we might as well talk about it now cause after that glare you gave me, it's obvious you're pissed at me, but you know what? Fine. Just try and get some sleep and when you feel better, we can talk about this."
With that, the girl took his bowl and cup and headed over to the sink, turning it on and washing out the bowl before putting it back in the cabinet. Taking a jug out of the fridge, she would then pour some cold water and bring it back to the ninja's dresser and set it atop of there.
Afterward, she crawled onto his bed. When she laid across from him, Naruto glanced at her for a moment before coldly turning the other way.
"Baby..." This hurt her as she inched closer to him and lightly shook his arm. "I'm sorry... Let's snuggle."
He didn't respond.
"Naruto..." She whimpered.
"Tell me how you feel, Nia," He finally said something.
"I already told you how I feel..."
"Tell me the truth."
"That was the truth: I'm a lot better than I was before. Obviously no one is immune to feeling down at times or feeling certain emotions, but my mind is healthy now. I don't have issues, okay?" She was honest.
The blonde looked over his shoulder.
"No issues?"
"No issues." Nia confirmed.
"You're not gonna whine about your looks?"
"Naruto, I didn't whine about my looks... I whined over how I was being treated because of my looks. Everyone saw a rat while I just couldn't and I couldn't understand why or what I did wrong to deserve the treatment I got and still do get at times, all right?"
The ninja now turned completely over to her, facing her.
"You're right, I'm sorry. It was mostly because of that and not cause you thought of it to be true. But I could've sworn you thought you was ugly?"
"No... when I look in the mirror, I don't see what's so wrong with me besides the size of my eyes and nose, but obviously if everyone keeps telling you you're some hideous monster, it's clear that there must be some sort of truth to-"
"There's no truth to it at all! There's no such thing as being ugly to literally everyone. I bet there was at least some people back in your village who thought you were okay-looking but didn't want to voice their opinions cause they're scared of what everyone else may think of them. It's literally impossible for everyone to think you're hideous, ya know?"
Nia didn't know how to feel about that.
"But what if you're wrong? What if everyone saw beauty as the same exact thing?"
Naruto frowned.
"That's still impossible for everyone to think one person is hot and for everyone to think one person is hideous. I don't care what you say, I bet you there was at least one person in your village who thought you were pretty or wanted to date you, but didn't say anything cause they're too worried about getting judged by the people who truly thought you were actually ugly. You can not be walking around with a few thousand people around you and not have at least one of them think you're attractive. I refuse to believe that. I bet my whole stash of ultra delicious ramen that someone had a crush on you even but kept it to themselves and therefore you never knew about it."
"I don't know, Naruto... if that were true, then they're damn good actors cause it seemed like everyone had the exact same opinion."
"C'mon you can't be serious... at least one of them had to have been lying."
Nia shrugged.
"I don't really care... it's whatever I guess. I guess that just showed me that beauty isn't in the eye of the beholder and that that whole concept is a lie."
"No it isn't," The genin begged to differ. "Beauty is subjective..."
"I personally think it's very objective, but okay."
"C'mon Nia, don't be like that."
"I'm just being honest, Naruto. From personal experience, I feel everyone has the same opinion of a person's looks. I'd love to be proven wrong."
"You've already been proven wrong cause I think you're pretty."
Nia raised an eyebrow.
"Well now you do, but you thought I was hideous at first, so my point has been proven."
Hearing this, the ninja frowned.
"Yep... that's what I thought," The girl cued in on his silence.
"I wouldn't say hideous... but still, you're totally forgetting that Akihiko thought you were gorgeous at first glance, so aha!"
"He literally thought that cause I saved his life. If he were to have seen me on some regular day on the streets, I'm sure he would've thought the same as everyone else."
"Man... why you gotta be so negative?"
"I'm not being negative... I'm being realistic. I truly don't think beauty is subjective, Naruto. I think everyone has the same opinion of what's ugly and what's hot. Like, everyone thinks Lady Tsunade is hot. Am I wrong?"
"Granny?! She's old! I don't think she's hot."
Nia couldn't help but giggle.
"What? How is she old? She looks like she's twenty-five or something?"
"Noooo, she uses this jutsu thing that makes her look young, but she's actually like fifty-four or something. I think she's even older than Pervy Sage."
Hearing this, the kunoichi bursted out in laughter. "What?! I don't believe you! Quit joking."
"I'm dead serious, ya know!"
"That's crazy..." She shook her head. "But even if that were true, in her young form, you can't tell me you don't think she's hot."
"I mean... she's not my type, but I guess I can see why a guy would swoon over her. I think her boobs are too big, but Pervy Sage seems to love them."
Nia sweatdropped.
"Okay, well what about Ino? Or even Hinata? I'm pretty sure everyone thinks they're gorgeous."
"I never found Ino to be that attractive, especially when she would go crazy over Sasuke back when we were younger then would get into it with Sakura a lot. Hinata... she's okay, but she's too quiet and I don't really notice when she's even next to me. I don't really talk to her at all. I talk to Ino more than I talk to Hinata."
'Well dang...' Nia thought to herself. 'That sucks for that girl... Naruto doesn't even know she exists is basically what he just said. That's good for me then... Hinata is a beauty yet he doesn't even bat an eye at her. That's crazy, but I'm not gonna complain.'
"Alright, but I'm still living proof that beauty is objective..."
Naruto sighed and placed his arms behind his head.
"Alright, whatever... I still think someone in your village thought you were pretty but was too scared to admit it, ya know?"
"Well, I was actually there and uh... everyone had the same opinion of me so... yeah."
"Why do you gotta make this so difficult?" The blonde chuckled.
"What's so funny, Naruto? You know I'm being serious right now."
"I know you are, but I'm laughing cause it's just impossible, Nia. Some people had to have been lying to their friends so they wouldn't get judged, or at least one person was. You can't be in a village that big and have everyone think you're hideous. There's no way, ya know?"
"It just is cause there's no such thing as beauty is subjective. That's the truth no matter how you put it, cause if it wasn't then there would've been someone who thought I was pretty."
"There probably was and they just didn't tell you or anyone that they thought you were. Maybe there was at least one person who did admit that they found you attractive but everyone else around them was swaying them into getting them to think you're ugly cause they hate your guts or something."
"I mean that's a good point, but still... I highly doubt that."
"So you're telling me no one has ever had a crush on you just from looking at you? Like ever? Throughout the entirety of your life, not one person ever thought you were average at the very least?"
"Maybe... when I was little, but definitely not during any point pass twelve-years-old."
The genin gave her a look.
"What?" Nia giggled.
"I just... don't believe you."
"Well, how can I truly speak for everyone when I can't read anyone's mind? From what I've known, no one has ever liked me pass that age."
"I bet there was at least one person who was madly in love with you and you never knew."
The girl immediately brushed this off.
"Okay, Naruto..."
"I'm serious, Nia."
"Well, that's not true."
"Cause you probably never noticed or refused to believe anyone could like you at the time."
"I was treated like absolute trash... and you're telling me I probably had some secret admirer? If that were true, where was this mysterious secret admirer of mine when I needed someone to be there for me?"
Naruto shrugged. "How am I supposed to know? I was just assuming things."
"If you're using that logic, then how about you? You probably had some secret admirer when you were getting trashed on."
"Ummm..."
"Yeah, it's hard to believe it, huh cause where was the secret admirer when everyone was treating you like crap? Nowhere to be found."
Though... you actually had someone admiring you from afar... unlike me... He's lucky and doesn't even know it, but... I could never tell him that. Hinata should've told him she liked him while she had the chance.
"I guess you make a good point there," The. blonde chuckled and scratched his cheek. "I never had that."
Nia felt an ache in her heart. It was like she wanted to tell him he was loved the entire time, but how could she do that when spilling out that information could lead him to falling in love with another girl? She would be absolutely idiotic to do so — it would just have to stay as something bittersweet for her.
"Anyway..." She wanted to stay clear of that. "This whole thing is stupid... what happened in the cloud should just stay in the cloud. If they didn't think I was pretty, then whatever. I didn't think any of them were cute themselves."
"SEE?!" The blonde pointed at her. "You just contra-whatever it was called, yourself. There were clearly some people who thought those other people were cute, but you weren't at all attracted to them."
"Fine... maybe in a woman's eyes, beauty is subjective, but when it comes to men, I feel they have the exact same idea to what beauty is. Like when you use your sexy jutsu... every man falls prey to that, so there... my point has been proven."
"It never worked on Sasuke..."
"Maybe cause he already knew you were a guy underneath it all...?"
"Okay well when I liked Sakura, I thought she was pretty, but Sasuke didn't think so and some others guys called her a stick and Konohamaru and Sai called her an ugly beast."
Hearing this, Nia just gave in.
"Okay, I'll give you that one. Beauty isn't entirely objective, I suppose... but speaking of Konohamaru... why'd he have to tell me that you have a thing for ugly girls?"
"What?! He said that to you?!"
"Yeah... it was that day you came back from that three week mission and found me in the classroom about to grade some papers. He was all saying that you must have a tendency for ugly chicks cause first you were chasing after Sakura then went after me, except he said at least I had boobs unlike Sakura or something like that."
"DAMN, THAT KONOHAMARUUUU!" Naruto became furious. "I SWEAR I'LL-"
"He's just a kid... I couldn't care less," The girl brushed it off before blushing and getting closer to the ninja. "But hey, I'm done with this topic. Do you think... we can cuddle now? I wanna be in your arms again..."
"I don't know... I didn't really like how you were saying beauty was objective..."
"Baby..." Nia pouted. "I was just saying how I felt about it through my experiences with people. I do think beauty is objective... for the most part at least. I really think people find the same things either ugly or beautiful... really. I'm sorry, but that's just my honest opinion."
"Well... no snuggling for you." Naruto slightly moved away.
"Nooo," Nia just scooted closer to him. "Honeybuuuun."
"Nope."
"I wanna be held."
"Not in the mood."
"Babyyy."
Naruto grinned.
"All right, I'm joking. Of course you can, but... I'm still sick so..."
"It's okay," The girl got close and snuggled up to him. "Besides, I'm sure doing this will help you get better faster. Snuggles always help relieve aches and pains and sicknesses. I know it helps me when I have a big, fat headache. Don't you think it feels good?"
"It helps..."
Seconds later however, Nia would once more speak to him.
"Naruto?"
"Hm?" The genin looked down at her. "Yeah? What's up?"
"Can... I tell you something?"
"Of course... what is it?"
"Well it's kind of a depressing subject."
"It's fine. Go ahead."
Nia spoke in a gentle tone.
"I've just... been thinking about your childhood; how you described it to be."
"Yeah?"
"I was just wondering... what would it have been like if I never left to the Cloud and instead stayed in the Leaf my entire life? Do you think... you and I could've been friends?"
Naruto chuckled awkwardly.
"Most likely not," He answered. "In all likelihood, you probably would end up avoiding me or your parents or some random adult would've made sure you stayed away from me."
"But while I was there... I never did avoid you," She reminded him. "In fact I remember playing with you if you came up to all the kids in the park... but I guess that was only a few times though."
"Yeah, I remember... but you know what else I recall? Someone always dragging you away each time you got caught talking to me."
Nia lowered her eyes.
"I'm sorry..." She felt bad.
Naruto shook his head. "It's not like it was your fault or anything. That's just what would happen if any kid was willing to play with me and an adult saw them. It was what it was, ya know?"
"But even so... if... I were to have stayed... I'm sure I would've ended wanting to be friends with you. When I was little, I was a really nice girl. I didn't care about who it was that I talked to. I was accepting of everyone."
The genin gave a small smile.
"If... what you're saying is true, I would've... been extremely grateful to you."
Hearing this, the girl hugged him, rubbing her cheek against his.
"Awww, I definitely would've been there for you! I love my herooo!" She gushed over him.
"N-Nia, be careful! You could make me feel even worse!"
"O-Oh, sorry..." She slightly backed away from him. "I forgot you're sick."
Suddenly, outside of the front door came a rather frantic knock. Taking a break from her action, Nia hopped off the bed and headed toward the door only to discover Jiraiya had been on the opposite side.
"Jirai-"
"I came as quickly as possible after I heard the news! May I come in?!" The sannin asked as Nia nodded and stepped aside, welcoming him in before she closed the door behind him.
As she done so, the old man raced to his pupil's room, trying to see if what he was told was true. When he got there, his eyes fell on the sickly genin.
"Kid, you alright?" He approached him. "You look awful. Look how pale you are. What the hell happened? Sakura told me you had a food poisoning of some sort?"
"Oh, Pervy Sage... I didn't expect to see you right now... thanks for coming to visit me and ya, I ate something I shouldn't have and now I'm all messed up right now, ya know?"
"Don't tell me you ate some poisonous mushroom, kid..."
Naruto shamefully rubbed the back of his head.
"Actually... yeah, I did. I guess Sakura told you, huh?"
"N-No..." Jiraiya seemed rather spooked.
"Well then who told you?" Nia finally entered into the room.
The old man just seemed rather freaked out.
"You alright, Jiraiya-sensei?"
"Did you... pick up the mushroom from outside the village gates? Like... while you two were out on a date?"
Immediately, the young ones exchanged looks at one another.
"Yeah..." Nia confirmed this to be true. "Naruto picked up some mushroom while we were strolling around to head to some place close to the village and while I wasn't looking, he ate it then got sick several minutes later, but... how did... you know that? Him and I were the only ones who knew about it."
'So then...' Jiraiya thought to himself and clenched his fist. 'The Great Lord Elder was correct... the prophecy is coming to be true faster than I expected it to happen. Why am I not surprised... his predictions have always came to be.'
Glancing over his shoulder, he then asked to speak with Nia outside, to which she agreed to.
So, standing out on the balcony, he then asked what he wanted without having to worry about the genin overhearing them.
"I want you to tell me the truth: do you still take those pills I gave you?"
Immediately, Nia hands shot up over her mouth as her eyes widened.
"OH MY GOD!" She gasped.
"What?! What?" Jiraiya panicked.
"I didn't take one in two days! I forgot!"
"NIA?! KID, ARE YOU SERIOUS?!"
"Naaah, I'm just messing with you," The girl laughed, lightly slapping his arm. "Of course I'm still taking the pill. Like hell I'd forget."
Hearing this, the sannin rubbed his face.
"GOLLLYYY! I thought you were serious for a second! Damn near gave me a heart attack," He breathed a sigh of relief as Nia kept laughing.
"Sorry, I just had to. I couldn't pass up that chance."
"Oh man," Jiraiya got himself together and chuckled. "You got me good with that one; I totally believed you."
"Okay no, but I'm actually being dead serious right now: I forgot to take the pill."
Immediately, the old man's smile dropped. Seeing this, Nia keeled over, laughing again.
"I'm just joking! Ahahahaha! Ahh, I can't bre-ahahahaha! You got so serious so suddenly! I can't do this! Ahahaha!"
"Okay Nia, enough with the jokes," Jiraiya wasn't tolerating this any longer. "Did you take your pills or not, Kid?"
Getting out the last few giggles, Nia straightened up and nodded.
"Yes, sir. I really did take the pills," She told the truth.
"Good... but... when you're done caring for that knucklehead in there, do you mind... receiving an ultrasound?"
"An ultrasound?" The girl was caught off guard by this. "I've already taken a pregnancy test before and it read negative."
"Yes, but going in for an ultrasound would be more effective in determining whether or not you've been impregnated."
"Jiraiya-sensei... is something wrong? You seem really anxious and paranoid as of late."
That moment, the man contemplated everything. Should he tell the prophecy he had seen some time ago? Should he really be trying to change what was to be of the future? Would changing that lead to something far worse down the line?
What was the sannin to do at this moment? What was the right call to make?
