CHAPTER 12✨
I pushed the door open to reveal the warm embrace of home. Mom stood there, a playful smile lighting up her face as she welcomed me inside. The air was thick with the comforting aroma of spices and simmering dishes, drifting from the kitchen and wrapping around me like a warm hug.
"Hey, look who's back!" she exclaimed, a playful glint in her eyes. "Did you have a nice nap at your friend's house?"
"Oh, you caught me, Mom! Yes, I had the most luxurious nap on their sofa."
Mom raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Is that so? Next time, you should just invite your pillow to your friend's house instead of yourself."
"I'll remember that for next time," I replied with a grin. "But I was wide awake the whole time. We had too much fun."
"Alright! Lunch will be ready soon. You better have an appetite after all that 'fun'."
"Yes, Mom, I'll be sure to work up an appetite for your delicious food."
"Good," she said, nodding firmly. "And no more napping after eating, okay?"
"No more napping. Unless your food puts me into a food coma, that is."
She playfully swatted my arm. "Now, hurry up and wash your hands, young man."
I saluted jokingly. "Yes, ma'am!"
After washing up, I settled down at the dining table, greeted by a delightful spread of dishes neatly arranged in stainless steel bowls. Each bowl held a different delicacy, a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
There was steaming hot dal, a lentil stew flavored with cumin, turmeric, and garlic. Beside it, was a bowl of fragrant basmati rice, each grain distinct and fluffy. I also had a serving of Aloo Gobi, a spiced cauliflower and potato curry. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, tender yet retaining their shape, and coated in a thick, aromatic gravy.
Alongside these dishes were freshly prepared rotis, their soft and pliable texture ideal for savoring the flavorful curries. Completing the meal was a bowl of refreshing raita, a yogurt-based condiment infused with cucumber and mint.
Finishing my meal, I retreated to my room, where the books lay in wait. I spent the afternoon engrossed in studies, the only interruption being the occasional rustle of pages as I turned them. As the evening approached, I glanced out of the window and spotted Ritu jogging with her friends. The sight brought a smile to my face, and I quickly moved outside to greet her.
"Hey, Ritu," I greeted her with a wave.
"Everyone, this is Jaikar," she announced, introducing me to two of her friends.
"I'm Meera," said the first friend, a shy yet cheerful girl with a pleasant smile.
"And I'm Chaya," said the second, a girl with a gentle demeanor and kind eyes.
"It's nice to meet you both," I replied, feeling a bit nervous and excited.
Ritu, noticing my nervousness, smiled reassuringly and began the conversation. "So, Jaikar, what do you do in your free time? We love to jog and hang out."
"Oh, I enjoy reading and exploring new places," I replied, trying to compose myself.
Meera chimed in, her eyes lighting up with interest. "That's really cool! Have you read any interesting books lately?"
"Yes, I recently finished an adventure book," I responded with eagerness.
Chaya nodded in agreement. "Adventure stories motivate you to try new things."
As we walked through the path, our conversation meandered through various topics, from our favorite books and movies to our most embarrassing moments. Meera shared a hilarious story about a mishap at a family wedding, while Chaya talked about her recent travels and the people she had met along the way. Ritu, as always, had a witty remark or an amusing anecdote to share, keeping the mood light and cheerful.
Our conversation took a more serious turn, delving into topics that were close to our hearts. We spoke about our career aspirations, sharing our dreams and ambitions with each other. It was refreshing to have such an open and honest conversation, knowing that we could share our thoughts without fear of judgment.
The setting sun painted the sky in a mesmerizing display of colors as we made our way back to our starting point. The way was bathed in a warm light, casting long shadows across the grass. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this friendship.
Meera clapped her hands together, smiling. "Well, that was truly invigorating!"
"It sure was," Chaya agreed, wiping sweat away from her broad forehead.
"We will take our leave, Ritu," they said in unison, exchanging amused glances.
Ritu waved a goodbye. "See you later!"
As their laughter gradually faded into the distance, Ritu and I stood still, silently watching their calm departure. The road was bathed in the soft glow of twilight, while the evening air carried the gentle sounds of nature settling in for the night.
Ritu turned to me, her smile warm and genuine. "How are you feeling, Jaikar?"
"I'm feeling good," I reassured her. "Being here with you, it's all I could ask for."
Ritu's smile widened. "I'm glad to hear that. Sorry if that felt a bit sudden. My friends urged me to introduce you soon."
"No problem! Your friends seem really nice." I enthusiastically clapped hands.
"They are, aren't they?" Ritu's eyes sparkled with genuine fondness.
"They certainly are," I agreed, smiling back. "Now, please close your eyes, Ritu."
She looked at me, curious but compliant, and closed her eyes obediently. "Okay, they're closed. What's going on?"
I chuckled softly. "Just a little surprise! Keep them closed for a moment."
With Ritu's eyes closed, I reached into my pocket and retrieved a small, intricately wrapped gift. The paper was adorned with a delicate silver bow. Carefully, I placed it in her hand, ensuring she could feel the weight and texture of my little gift.
"Alright, you can open them now."
Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked down at the gift in her hand. Her expression was full of excitement as she untied the bow and carefully unwrapped the paper. As the paper fell away, revealing the small box inside, her eyes widened in surprise. She looked up at me, smiling.
"What is this?" She let out a happy scream.
"It's a little something for you," I replied, unable to contain my own excitement.
Ritu lifted the lid of the box and gasped softly as she saw the pendant nestled inside. The heart-shaped pendant resembled a miniature pineapple, with its surface intricately carved to mimic the texture of the fruit's skin. It shimmered in the light, adding a touch of warmth to its appearance. At the top of the heart, where the pineapple's leaves would be, a small cluster of green gemstones sparkled, further enhancing the pineapple motif.
Ritu reached out and hugged me. In her embrace, the world stopped still on its axis. There was no time, no wind, no rain. I felt her body press in, soft and warm. In that moment of feeling her so close, I was awake somehow, more alive than I have been in a very long time. I felt like a cocoon who yearns for the butterfly, to be safe within walls, protected. I wanted to wrap my arms around her in every way the universe is kind enough to bring me.
"It's so beautiful!" She clasped her hand to her chest. "Thank you so much, Jaiku."
"I'm glad you like it." I smiled warmly.
Ritu fastened the pendant around her neck and touched it gently. "Well, what do you think? Do I look like a million bucks?"
"You're priceless, Ritu," I whispered softly, pressing a tender kiss to her fingers.
Above us, the stars twinkled as if in approval, while the moon, feeling a twinge of jealousy, hid behind a passing dark cloud, casting a romantic glow over us. Ritu blushed deeply, her cheeks turning a shade of red that matched ripe strawberries, the color spreading from her face to her ears.
"You're too sweet," she murmured, her cheeks flustered like a delicate butterfly.
"You bring out the sweetness in me."
She glanced away shyly. "You always know how to make me feel special."
"Ritu, there's something I want to tell you," I began, my voice filled with sincerity. "Being with you, it's more than just bringing out the sweetness in me. You make me feel alive, like I can truly be myself. I've never met anyone like you, and I... I think I'm falling for you, Ritu."
Ritu's eyes widened in surprise, a fleeting moment of uncertainty passing through her gaze. However, as she looked at me, her expression softened, and a warm smile replaced the initial surprise. She reached out, her hand trembling slightly, and gently took mine, intertwining our fingers.
"I feel the same way," she said, her voice filled with emotion. "I've been afraid to admit it, but I think I'm falling for you too."
"I'm so glad you feel that way," I said, my voice filled with genuine happiness. "I've been wanting to tell you for so long, but I was afraid of ruining our friendship."
Ritu smiled, her eyes shining with affection. "Our friendship is what makes this so special, Jaiku. I've never felt this way about anyone before, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes us."
"Me too," I replied, my heart full of hope. "Together, I think we can handle anything."
"Absolutely! We make a great team, Jaiku."
In that moment, surrounded by the stillness of the evening and the warmth of her presence, I knew that I was exactly where I was meant to be. As we continued to walk, the world seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of us enveloped in our own little bubble of love and happiness. A silent understanding passed between us, a promise to be there for each other.
The gentle breeze brushed against our faces, carrying with it the sweet scent of flowers blooming nearby. The soft glow of streetlights cast a warm, romantic ambiance, showing our path ahead. With each step, our hands intertwined, a sense of connection and unity grew between us, as if our hearts were beating in harmony.
Eventually, we reached the end of our walk, and reluctantly, we knew it was time to say goodbye. We stood facing each other, our hands still clasped, not wanting to let go. The soft glow of the streetlights illuminated Ritu's face, highlighting the warmth and affection in her eyes.
"I guess this is goodnight," I said softly, my voice filled with reluctance.
Ritu smiled, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Goodnight, Jaikar! Thank you for tonight. It was just perfect."
"Sleep well, Ritu and dream sweetly."
We stood there in silence for a moment, the only sound, a rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze. With a final squeeze of our hands, we finally let go. I watched as Ritu walked away, disappearing into the night. On my way home, my heart filled with gratitude for the sweet moments spent together.
