CHAPTER 11✨

I finished my hearty breakfast and settled into my chair, savoring the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Just as I was about to immerse myself in the day ahead, my phone erupted with a lively ringtone, shattering the peaceful silence of the morning. I reached for it, intrigued by the unexpected interruption. It was Kiran.

I answered the call, eager to catch up with my friend. "Hey Kiran, how's it going?"

"All good. How is your health?"

"My health? Why, do I sound sick?" I replied, pretending to cough dramatically.

Kiran chuckled on the other end of the line. "No, no, I just meant in a general sense."

"I'm still recovering," I reassured him.

"So, when are you coming over to taste my world-famous burnt toast?" he teased.

"Okay, I'll bring the fire extinguisher."

Kiran laughed heartily at the response. "Make sure you bring some butter too."

"Consider it done! Did you miss me?"

"No, but Jasper did," he chortled happily.

"Oh, if Jasper could talk, I will never talk with you again," I quickly retorted.

"Ouch, that hurts!" He screamed as if I clubbed a dager through his heart.

"Alright, I'll be on my way then." With a mischievous chuckle, I ended the call.

Standing before the brass-framed mirror, I gazed at the reflection staring back at me. With each stroke of the comb through my hair, I sought to present a polished exterior to the world. Yet, the mirror revealed more than just a well-groomed appearance. It reflected a soul brimming with love, happiness, and an ambition for success.

Grabbing the Nutella from the kitchen, I walked into the living room where my mom was deeply engrossed in a book. The room bathed in a golden light as the morning sun streamed in through the windows, casting a cheerful glow over the furniture and walls. Mom looked up from her book, and smiled warmly at me.

"Hello there! Trying a new look, are we?" she teased, a playful twinkle in her eye.

"Sure! I can be a head-turner, Mom."

Her playful twinkle turned into a full blown smile. "Careful with that hairstyle, you might cause some neck injuries."

I chuckled at her comment. "I'll be careful!"

"And where are you going, Jaikar?"

"I'm going to Kiran's house to thank him for taking care of me after the stitches," I said, taking a seat on the nearby couch.

"Ah, that's very thoughtful of you. I'm sure Kiran will appreciate the Nutella," she replied, setting her book aside.

"Thanks, Mom. See you later!" I said, heading towards the door with a smile.

Saying goodbye to my mom, I decided to ride my bike to Kiran's house. The weather was ideal for a leisurely ride, with the sun shining brightly and a gentle breeze blowing through the trees. When I arrived at Kiran's house, I parked my bike and walked up to the front door. Kiran was already there, waiting for me with a smile.

"Hello, hero of hearts!" He waved at me.

"Hey Kiran, this one's better than butter," I replied, handing him the jar of Nutella.

He smiled as he accepted the gift. "You didn't have to do that, but I'm glad you did."

As I entered the house, I was greeted by Jasper, his tail wagging furiously, as if he had just won the lottery, and his tongue lolled out in a big, goofy grin. He leaped into my arms, nearly knocking me off balance. I laughed, trying to steady myself as he showered me with enthusiastic licks.

"Whoa there, Jasper! Easy, boy," I exclaimed, ruffling his fur and scratching behind his ears. He wagged his tail so hard it seemed like it might fall off any time.

"Looks like someone's happy to see you," Kiran remarked, a smile playing on his lips.

"I think he missed me a little too much," I grinned, giving Jasper one last pat before he bounded off to investigate a new scent.

"Jaikar, it's been ages!" Kiran's mom exclaimed as she walked down the hallway.

"Hello, Aunty! It has been a while," I replied, smiling warmly at her.

Kiran's mother was a striking woman, her vibrant saree embellished with intricate gold embroidery. Her fiber glasses sat elegantly on her nose, adding to her graceful demeanor. A large sindoor adorned her forehead, and her hands jingled softly with a multitude of red bangles as she moved towards me.

"It's so good to see you. How have you been?" she asked, her eyes twinkling.

"I've been well, Aunty, thank you for asking. And how's everything been?"

"Busy, as always," she replied with a chuckle. "Kiran is preparing for the exams and gearing up for his interviews."

"That's exciting! I hope his interviews go well," I said, genuinely happy for Kiran.

"Thank you. How are your stitches, Jaikar?" she asked, her tone laced with concern.

"I guess I'm doing much better, Aunty."

"That's good to hear. You must take care of yourself, especially with all the running around you do," she warned me softly.

"I will. Thank you for reminding me."

"You're welcome," she replied warmly. "What would you like, coffee or tea?"

"No need, Aunty. I already had coffee at home," I declined the offer politely.

"Alright, thanks for the Nutella," she said, before disappearing into the kitchen.

Kiran whispered closely. "Have you mentioned the stitches to your parents?"

"They found out. But I lied to them," I admitted, a hint of guilt creeping into my voice. "I didn't want them to worry, so I told them that it was just a small accident."

He raised an eyebrow. "They bought it?"

"For now, yes. I'll come clean eventually."

"I'm sure they will understand when you're ready to tell them the whole truth."

"Thanks, man. I hope so too," I replied, feeling reassured by his words.

"No problem, Jai," he replied with a smile. "Hey, have you heard about the new mall? There will be some great deals today."

I perked up at his words. "No, I hadn't heard about that. Shall we check it out?"

Kiran nodded eagerly. "Absolutely! It's a perfect opportunity to get some fresh air."

We both got ready quickly, eager for the outing. With a sense of anticipation in the air, we headed outside where my bike awaited. Kiran hopped on the back, his excitement evident in the way he eagerly pointed out the route to the mall.
During our ride, the wind played with our hair and the sun gently warmed our backs.

When we arrived, the mall greeted us with open arms. The chatter of excited voices, and the occasional laughter filled the air, creating a lively ambiance. It felt as though the mall itself was alive, with the thrill of endless possibilities and new discoveries.

We approached the grand mall entrance that stretched skyward, decorated with colorful banners and twinkling lights. The air was filled with enticing aromas from the food stalls, and the background music added to the lively atmosphere. We navigated, our senses fully engaged with the sights, sounds, and scents of the mall.

"Wanna grab an ice cream, Jaikar?"

"Yes, why not! Its time for the brain freeze."

Upon arriving at the ice cream parlor, the seller welcomed us with a colorful array of flavors. After much deliberation, Kiran opted for a towering cone piled high with scoops of various flavors, while I settled myself with a classic butterscotch cone.

He couldn't help but be amazed by the sheer size of his cone. "I should have gone for a smaller one instead of this."

I chuckled, biting my ice cream. "At least you won't be complaining about not getting enough. That thing is a skyscraper!"

Kiran laughed, trying to balance the precarious cone. "You are right, I might need a ladder just to finish it."

"You know, ice cream is a lot like life. You have to enjoy it before it melts away."

He nodded in agreement. "That's deep! Almost as deep as your butterscotch cone."

I chuckled, looking at my melting treat. "Oh, mine is turning into a puddle already."

He grinned mischievously. "Hurry up and eat it before it becomes a soup."

I laughed, taking a big bite. "Mmm, delicious butterscotch soup."

The last traces of ice cream melted on our tongues, leaving us with contented smiles. Wiping the sticky fingers, we made our way towards a small jewelry shop. The display windows sparkled with a variety of gems, each catching the light in its own way. The tinkling sound of a bell greeted us as we pushed open the door, stepping into a world of elegance and beauty.

Inside, the air was cool and scented with a hint of jasmine. Brightly lit showcases displayed delicate necklaces, shimmering earrings, and intricately designed rings, each piece a work of art. The soft murmur of conversation filled the air as customers admired the craftsmanship of the jewelry.

"I've decided, I'm buying something for Ritu," I announced with determination.

"Pick something less expensive," Kiran said, briefly eyeing the price tags.

"Why? Does my love have a price tag now?"

He laughed, "No, of course not! Just thinking about your wallet's feelings."

"Okay, I'll just get her a rock from outside."

Kiran chuckled, "A rock might be a bit too... natural. I'm sure Ritu would appreciate something with a bit more sparkle."

"True, true! I guess I'll have to stick with something from inside the store then."

"How about a small pendant? It's not too expensive, but it's still a nice gesture."

"That sounds perfect. Ritu will love it," I agreed, a smile playing on my lips.

"And your wallet will thank you too!"

"Exactly," I replied with a grin. "I'll give my wallet a little pat for its hard work."

He laughed, shaking her head. "Don't pat it too hard, or it might start crying."

"Thanks, Kiran. I'll keep that in mind."

As we looked through the pendants, each one seemed more beautiful than the last. There were designs with intricate details, sparkling gems, and whimsical shapes that added a playful touch. Despite the variety, none of them felt quite right for Ritu.

My eyes wandered over the assortment of pendants, one in particular caught my attention. It was a small, heart-shaped pendant that had been crafted to resemble a pineapple. Its design stood out from the rest. I picked it up gently, feeling its weight in my hand. The more I looked at it, the more I felt that it was perfect for her.

"This is it," I declared, holding it up.

Kiran's eyes lit up as he looked at the pendant. "Hero of hearts! It's very cute."

"Thanks, but I just got lucky with this one."

He gave my arm a playful nudge. "Whatever it is, I'm sure Ritu will love it."

With Kiran's stamp of approval, I made my way to the counter to purchase the pendant. The salesperson smiled as she rang up the purchase. We walked out of the store, the weight of the pendant nestled in my pocket filling me with joy. I couldn't wait to see the look on Ritu's face when I finally give it to her. With a happy smile, Kiran and I headed towards the bike.

We made our way back as I rode the familiar streets with ease, eventually arriving at Kiran's home. We bid each other farewell, promising to meet again soon, before I resumed my journey. The afternoon sun loomed high in the sky, its intense rays casting a sweltering heat over everything by the time I reached my home.
