The late bell had already rung by the time I made it to the biology lab. I winced as the door creaked on its hinges when I opened it. All the eyes in the room turned to me and I gulped nervously.
"I'm sorry, I got lost." I said to the professor standing at the front of the class.
"You must be..." he glanced down at a paper on his desk. "Aviana Faulkner, my new student."
"Just Ava, sir."
"Well just Ava, I'll excuse your tardiness today since you're new. But if you're late enough to interrupt my class again, I ask that you don't bother showing up."
I nodded hastily, nervously shifting my feet as everyone watched me get chastised by the professor.
"I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again."
"Good. My name is Mr. Brixtonn. You can take the empty seat next to Mr. Matthews." He said, returning his attention back to the text book in his hands. My eyes scanned the students and I felt a rush of relief as Dylan waved to me next to an empty seat.
I hurried toward him and sat down, my face feeling hot as everyone's eyes eventually returned back to the front of the room.
"You couldn't tell me that we had the same class together?" I hissed at Dylan.
"I didn't know! I'm sorry! I blame Brandon." He whispered.
I put my face in my hands, remembering the embarrassment I had felt running into that super hot guy in the hallway.
"Ugh, I ran into the most gorgeous dude I've ever seen. Literally ran right into him. That could have been avoided." I groaned quietly.
"Oh yea? Who was it?" Dylan asked, leaning forward in his seat.
"I didn't get his name."
"Ms. Faulkner and Mr. Matthews, would you mind allowing me to continue teaching, or would you like to take your conversation outside?" Mr. Brixtonn said loudly. I slouched lower in my chair, willing myself to disappear, but Dylan threw him a smile.
"Sorry sir, I was just letting Ava know what chapter we're on." He said easily. The teacher grumbled something before resuming his lecture.
"After class." Dylan mumbled to me and I flipped open my book to the current chapter.
Luckily, biology was one of my favorite classes, and I had already read through the textbook to prepare. It didn't take me long to pick up where we were and get engrossed in the subject.
The class was nearly over when I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I rubbed it discreetly while looking around the room.
Towards the back of the class, a pair of unnaturally bright blue eyes caught my attention. I startled slightly, realizing I was looking at a group of four girls, all of them witches. I could tell just by the absurd beauty of them that they held some magic in their blood. They must be part of the local coven my mom had been telling me about.
I gave them a shy wave, and one of them returned it with a small smile. The one with the blue eyes continued staring at me and I looked away awkwardly, returning my attention back to the notes I was taking.
Finally, the bell rang and everyone started packing up their bags to leave the room. Mr. Brixtonn yelled out a reminder for an assignment due at the end of the week and I quickly scribbled it in my planner.
A shadow fell across my desk and I looked up, surprised to see the four girls that had been sitting in the back of the class. I glanced at Dylan who was watching us with interest. He chewed on the tip of his pen absentmindedly as they surrounded my desk.
"So you're Ava Faulkner?" Said the blue eyed one. I could tell she had a false color hiding her true iris' just like I did, no ones eyes could be that electric blue naturally, the color was shocking against her flawless dark skin. Why she chose something so attention drawing was beyond me.
"Yea, that's me." I said, unsure of why they were making me feel so nervous. It's not like I've never been around witches my own age before. Back home we had had a small coven, and I grew up playing with the other children. I'd never felt uncomfortable around them, like I did now.
Well, all of them except for the small blonde one who had waved back to me earlier. She was standing with them, but wore a friendly smile instead of bored disdain like the rest of them. Compared to the other three, she looked almost normal, albeit still beautiful. Her blonde hair hung in perfect waves all the way down her back. She had a cute little button nose and minimal make up.
"I'm Simone." Blue eyes said, bringing my attention back to her as her piercing gaze looked me over. "This is Trinity, Bella and Kaitlyn."
"It's nice to meet you." Trinity- the friendly one- chirped. I smiled at her but felt it falter when Bella and Kaitlyn stayed silent.
"Um, well, it's nice to meet you. But I'm- I'd better get going..." I glanced at Dylan, silently asking for his assistance. He caught on immediately and stood up, throwing his arm over my shoulder.
"See you ladies later!" He said, steering me towards the door.
I released a sigh of relief once we were in the hallway away from Simone's penetrating stare.
"What the hell was that all about?" He asked. I shrugged, not completely sure. All I knew was that I felt rattled and couldn't think of a reason why.
"Those four never talk to anyone else. Well, aside from Trinity. She's nice." I hummed in response. Mostly because I didn't know what to say.
"Let me see your schedule." He said, plucking it out of my hands. "Ew, you have algebra next." He grimaced. "I'll walk you there, I'm heading in that same direction anyways."
"Thank you so much." I said, leaning against him gratefully.
"So tell me about this gorgeous guy you ran into." He said, leading me down a hallway. I glanced at the name of the wing, hoping I could remember it for tomorrow.
"Oh my god." I flushed again. "After seeing him, I'm not entirely sure Greek gods aren't real." Dylan's eyebrows raised.
"What's he look like?" He pushed.
"Um, curly copper hair, green eyes, freckles, little bit of a beard." Dylan's eyes lit up and I knew immediately that he knew who I was talking about. He laughed out loud.
"Ironic you would say Greek gods." He chuckled.
"What do you mean?" I frowned.
"I know exactly who you're talking about." He grinned. "And his name is Adonis."
I felt my mouth fall open. "Of all the names someone could have chosen for their kid, his parents decided on Adonis, and he just happened to grow up... to look.. like that?"
Dylan laughed again. "I know right. Makes me wish my parents had named me Adam Lambert or something. Woulda made my life a hell of a lot easier."
I grinned at him, so I was right. He gave me a knowing look and sighed.
"You're right though, Adonis is probably one of the hottest humans to walk the face of the earth. Well, him and... oh! Here's your class!"
"Wait, but.." I spluttered as he left, wanting to hear more. Hey, I was a single woman in a new town, I could gossip about the hot guys if I wanted to.
"I'll meet you after class!" He told me, quickening his pace to get to his next class. I sighed in defeat and opened the door, grateful that I was early to this class so I drew a lot less attention.
This class was set up much like my biology room had been. Three neat rows of tables that sat two each, facing towards the professors desk. I sat down in one of the empty seats and pulled out my laptop, placing it on the table.
"Damnnn." I heard someone mutter, and glanced up, hiding my grimace when I saw several guys staring at me from the door, muttering amongst themselves. I busied myself with my laptop, opening up the schools website so I could look at a different map of the school. I was hoping to be able to make it to my next class without anyone's help this time.
Someone slid into the seat beside me and cleared their throat.
"Hey, how are you doin'?" He asked. I looked up. Sitting next to me was one of the guys that had been standing at the door, glancing sideways I could see the rest of his friends sitting a few tables away, watching us.
"Good." I said, giving him a polite smile before turning back to my screen.
His gaze still stayed on me. "You're new. What's your name?" I turned to look at him again. He was cute-ish, I guess. A boyish hair cut hid part of his face. He had one of those frat boy auras about him. I couldn't stand frat boys, they were loud, obnoxious and pushy.
"Ava." I told him, making a point to turn back to my screen.
"Pretty name for a pretty girl." He smirked. I didn't respond and it seemed to tick him off a little bit. "Listen, you're new. I'm Kyle, my friends and I, we're part of Phi Sigma Psi." I rolled my eyes, yup, frat boys. "You should come sit with us. We'll show you around." He lowered his voice a little, "we'll show you all the school hideouts." He reached out and took one of my curls between his fingers.
I jerked back, the hair falling out of his hand. "No thank you." I retorted with more force in my voice. I glanced at the clock above the door, there were still fifteen more minutes before class started.
I dug in my bag and pulled out my earphones, plugging them into the computer before shoving them in my ears as I hit play and music drowned him out. He said something else but I couldn't hear what it was as guitar riffs filled my ears.
Gritting my teeth, I stared at my computer. Dudes just couldn't take a hint. I heard another voice but couldn't make out what they were saying. I sighed in relief as Kyle stood up, and someone else took his seat. Probably the persons actual assigned seat. I wondered if I was sitting in someone else's assigned seat and started to worry, not wanting to intentionally piss anyone off.
The owner of the voice said something to me but I couldn't hear what they said. Out of the corner of my eye through the curtain of my curls, I could see that they were looking at me. With a frustrated sigh I pulled one earbud out, turning my attention towards the stranger.
For the third time today, I felt my mouth fall open.
Sitting where Kyle had just been sitting was a new man. He had dirty blonde hair, shaved shorter on the sides and longer on top, it was styled just enough that it looked effortless, a few strands falling into his face in an almost artful way. His ocean blue eyes scanned my face as we stared at each other. My own eyes fell to his lips and I wanted to groan, why were men blessed with such perfect lips like that? Five o'clock shadow covered his sharp jaw, complimenting him oh so nicely. Unlike Adonis and his hoodie this morning, this guy was only wearing a gray t-shirt, so I could see how it hugged his muscled pecs so right, and emphasized the size of his biceps.
The mystery guy leaned back in surprise as I turned toward him. I watched, enthralled, as his pupils dilated, making his blue eyes turn darker and mysterious. I felt like if I kept staring at him I could fall right into their depths.
Was I just imagining it, or did his nostrils just flare? Could he smell me? Goddess, I hoped I didn't forget to put on deodorant this morning.
He mumbled something, but thanks to the stupid earbud in my other ear I missed what he said. I pulled it out, still staring at him in disbelief. How many absurdly hot guys attended this school?
