Hear No Love, Speak No Love

“Ah, that wasn’t pleasant,” I grumbled as I face planted on the sidewalk.

“Watching it was,” my best friend, Kellin, said, snickering. He bent down and helped me to my feet as kids glanced at me and laughed. Yea, yea, yea. Like they’d never tripped over air and face planted on the sidewalk before.

“Shuddup,” I whined, smacking him once I was steady on my feet. He ducked away from my hands and chuckled, walking towards the school.

“Come on princess,” he called over his shoulder.

I glared at him. I crossed my arms childishly and followed him, walking faster to catch up as he neared the entrance of the school. I didn’t feel like opening the door on my own. Too much work.

Kellin opened the door and motioned for me to go in. He bowed as I passed him and stepped into the main lobby of the school. Ewww it smelled like teenagers. Were Kellin and I the only people who owned showers in this school?

“Another day of hell,” I said miserably. “And it already sucks. I think I broke my face. I better go home.”

Kellin rolled his eyes and slung an arm around my shoulders casually. “It’s not like there was much damage to do in the first place,” he muttered. I pouted and elbowed him in the stomach. He grunted and I grinned to myself.

“Let’s just go to our lockers,” he grumbled, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the junior hallway.

We went to Kellin’s locker first. He exchanged his books before we went to my locker. I exchanged my stuff and shut my locker, turning to Kellin and frowning.

“I don’t want to go to class,” I whined, giving him puppy dog eyes. Please let him say we can skip, please let him say we can skip, please let him say we can sk-

“We can’t skip. We have that stupid test first period,” he said with a sigh. “I got a 45% on the last one, so passing one might just help me. What’d you get on the last test?”

I smiled innocently. “Oh, ya know. A 22%...”

He stared at me and sighed hopelessly. “You got a 22% on the last test, and you want to skip this one? What am I going to do with you Cam?” he asked, rolling his eyes.

“Stop babysitting me fool! I’m old enough to babysit myself,” I said matter-of-factly, and then realized that what I had just said made absolutely no sense. Ah well.

“Oh Cam. You make no sense whatsoever. No wonder I love you,” Kellin said, hugging me. I grinned and we began to walk back to the main lobby.

The bell rang and we both sighed before trudging off to our first period English class. We took our seats across from each other once we had reached the classroom and gave hopeless looks to the teacher. She was a proper bitch who hated us.

She ignored us and I glanced at Kellin. He held his hand out and I took it in my own. “If we fail, may we find good burger flipping jobs. May the bitch visit us. May we spit in her fucking food,” we said, closing our eyes as we spoke our “prayer”. It was generally what we said when we knew we were about to fail a test.

I released Kellin’s hand as we opened our eyes. “Let’s go! I’m ready! I can so pass this test!” I said with determination as the final bell rang.

“You have your test today. Eyes on your own papers, no electronic devices, and no talking,” the bitch said sternly before walking around and passing out the tests to us.

I took mine and looked over the questions, feeling my hope drain as I did so. What? How was I supposed to know why the bitch in The Birthmark died? I wasn’t a doctor!

I stood up and skipped over to Ms. Bitch’s desk. “Here you go!” I said sweetly, handing her my blank paper. She took it and raised an eyebrow at me.

                “That’s all Cameron?” she asked.

I pointed where I had scribbled my name. “I signed it for you,” I pointed out. “I deserve extra credit for that. My signature is worth a lot of money. People would kill for it.”

“I’d kill for Cam’s signature!” Kellin called.

“Kellin! Sh. You’re taking your test,” Ms. Bitch snapped. Kellin grumbled out something about a vibrator as he turned back to his test.

“Well Ms. Clark, since you refused to even attempt taking the test, you might as well make yourself useful and take down the attendance sheet for me,” Ms. Bitch said flatly, thrusting the attendance sheet in my face.

“You’re the one that needs the exercise,” I muttered under my breath as I took the attendance sheet.

                “What was that, Ms. Clark?”

                “I said you’re the one that’s the boss ma’am!”

She gave me a suspicious look. I smiled innocently before flashing her a peace sign and hurrying out of the room before I got more detention. I didn’t feel like staying afterschool to die of boredom yet again.

I made my way out to the hallway and down the side stairs. I looked around for signs of anyone that I knew. Maybe I could just ditch class. It’s not like I did anything in class anyways.

But, running with the rest of my luck today, I didn’t run into anyone that I knew as I made it to the attendance office. I mentally sighed as I handed the sheet to the secretary.

I turned and began to walk back to class when I noticed a kid staring at a schedule in confusion. I didn’t recognize him and he looked about my age. He must be new here.

I turned and made my way over to him. He was so fixated on his schedule that he didn’t even noticed me as I got closer. I stopped a few feet from him.

“Hey, do you need help?” I asked curiously.

The kid didn’t appear to hear me, his eyes still scanning his schedule, a look of confusion on his face. I frowned.

“Hey kid! Hello! Do you need help?” I repeated, getting the same result.

I sighed, getting annoyed now. Why didn’t men like to ask for help when they were lost or confused?! Ugh. They made everything difficult.

I stepped forward and shook the kid’s shoulder. His head jerked up in surprise and he glanced at me, taking in my appearance.

“For the third time: Do you need help?” I asked, trying to keep my patience.

He blushed and nodded, holding out his schedule to me. I took it in my hands and eyed it, looking at his first period.

“Oh! I know where your first period class is. Come on; I’ll walk you there,” I said, handing his schedule back to him.

He shook his head and pointed at the attendance office with a sheepish smile. I nodded in understanding.

“They still trying to get you settled into the school? Are you new?” I asked and he nodded. He held his schedule back out to me and I took it again, looking it over.

“We have most periods together. You can sit with me and my best friend during lunch if you want,” I said with a shrug. He gave me a shy smile and nodded, glancing down at his feet as a slight blush rose on his face.

He stood next to me and pointed at second period, giving me a questioning look. I didn’t have it with him, but he was probably wondering where the hell it was. The school could be confusing.

I pointed straight. “You just got to the end of that hallway and upstairs,” I explained, looking at the room number again before handing his schedule back.

I sighed. “I had better get back to class,” I said and gave him a little wave. He returned it and I walked away.

I paused, realizing I hadn’t gotten the kid’s name. And he was a cute one. I spun around to ask him and saw that he was just disappearing into the attendance office with the secretary. Shrugging it off, I wandered back to English class.
