×TWENTY-SIX×

Everyone watched with solemn gazes as Stoick's boat was set off to sea, the beginning of his travels to Valhalla. "May the valkyries welcome you," Gobber began tears prickling in his eyes, "and lead you through Odin's great battlefield. May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we might hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla, and know that you've taken your rightful place at the table of Kings."

"For a great man has fallen. A warrior. A Chieftain. A father. A friend." It pained you to watch Hiccup ready himself to begin the ceremony, tears trickling down his cheeks. He knelt, setting his arrow in the dying embers of the fire built just moments beforehand, as if wilting to nothing but flickers and embers in respect for the fallen, and setting the tip on fire. He stood once again, notching his arrow and drawing back. You waited for his shot, so you and the others may follow. He hesitated for a moment, as if holding his breath, then let the arrow slip between his fingers. It sailed through the air, landing on Stoick's ship.

Everyone followed suit, flaming arrows flying through the air, putting the watercraft up in flames. The grief hung heavy in the air, tightening its grip on Hiccup the most. "I'm sorry dad." He finally mustered, staring onwards at the blazing glory that sailed forth to Valhalla. "I'm not the Chief that you wanted me to be, and I'm not the peace-keeper I thought I was. I...dont know..." Valka came to her son's side, running her fingers through his hair. "You came early into this world." Her fingers fell through his hair and came to rest on his shoulder.

"You were such a wee thing. Oh, so frail. So fragile. I feared you wouldn't make it." She looked towards the sea as if hoping to catch a last glimpse of the vanishing boat, burning its way to Valhalla. "But your father, he never doubted. He always said you'd become the strongest of them all. And he was right." She came to face him, cupping his cheek with her hand, and running it through his hair. "You have the heart of a Chief and the soul of a dragon. Only you can bring our worlds together. That is who you are, son."

With a newfound sense of pride and strength, Hiccup looked forth once more, then turned to face the rest of you. You slowly approached his side, hand sliding up his chest and resting on his neck. "I didn't know him long, Hic. But he was a great man, filled with more honour than most." You glanced down, between the two of you, before looking upwards at the handsome young man before you. "He was an idol, a teacher, and a care-taker. He took me into your village without a question, putting faith in me when I refused to tell my heritage. He put others before himself and lived a selfless life. For that, I know he will be revered in Valhalla and the stars above. Men, Gods and Dragons alike will mourn the loss that is Stoick the Vast." You watched with a pained expression as more tears trickled down his face. You gently cupped both his cheeks in your hands, bringing his face closer to yours. "But remember these words, Hic. I'm still here, and I still love you." His expression softened at your words, his knuckles brushing gently across your cheek. "You have a loving mother, and a whole village full of people who love you. He's always going to be right here," you placed your hand over his chest, "no matter what."

He closed his eyes as if to compose himself. Your hands slid down to his chest, lingering for a moment before they dropped to your sides. He took a few paces forward, staring at the distant glow of the blazing trail Stoick left behind. "I, uh, I was so afraid of becoming my dad. Mostly because I thought I never could. How—how do you become someone that great? That brave? That selfless? I guess you can only try." He turned, his expression steeling over as if he finally found his inner strength at that moment. "A Chief protects his own. We're going back."

"Uh, with what?" Tuffnut asked, looking at his sister. "He took all the dragons?" Ruffnut stated although it was more of a question. There was a plan hidden in those emerald eyes, a ghost of a smile on those lips of his. "Not all of them." At that moment, sensing the shift in the mood, Astra came strutting over, sitting beside you matter-of-factly. "Astra isn't under the new Bewilderbeast's control, because she has an Alpha of her own." You say with a small, coy smile. "Valka's Bewilderbeast had no claim over her, so neither does Drago's."

"But how will she carry all of us back to Berk?" Ruffnut asked, a quizzical look on her face. "She won't." Hiccup said, looking at you with a similar smile on his face. "I have a plan."
