×THIRTY-SEVEN×

Ever since you got back to Berk, you had been restless and uneasy. It was too late to sneak off, and you knew Hiccup would just try to follow you if you did manage to get away. You remained distant, lost in your thoughts even when you and Hiccup curled up together to sleep for the night, which made him worried. "Are you sure everything is okay?" He asked, arm wrapped around your waist as he pulled you closer to his chest. "Mhm," you responded, staring blankly at the wall. He sighed silently, wishing you wouldn't just shut down on him. You, on the other hand, were just trying to process everything. The wedding arrangement felt so forced, and so rushed, to the point that it made you feel very uneasy and uncomfortable. But Hiccup seemed so happy about it, so full of light every time he looked at you that you held your tongue. There was no way you'd ruin this for him. You'd just go sneak off in the morning while he's busy with his Chiefly duties and clear your mind for a couple of hours, before returning like nothing ever happened. Everything would be okay after that, it had to be, right?

Your eyes couldn't stay open much longer. You were going to fall asleep pretty soon. "G'night, Hic," you mumbled into your pillow before the darkness consumed you. When you opened your eyes, you expected it to be the morning, but instead, you were sat on a field, a loose white dress on your body. You looked around, seeing nothing but lush green trees. The only thing was, this field looked more like a modern-day park than anything you had seen on your travels with Astra. In the distance, you spotted an old, rusty swing set. Something about it seemed so familiar. You stood, making your way over to it. The closer you got, the more a small child came into focus, swinging back and forth on the creaky, clearly unsafe swing with a melancholy look crossing her face. "Are you okay, little one?" You asked, approaching the (colour)-skinned girl, slowly recognising her features as your own; just younger. "I don't want to grow up," she said sadly, eyes not leaving the ground. "Weddings are adult things, and adult things suck." She continued, the creaking of the swing stretching out in sharp groans as she came to a slow stop. You winced at the sound, watching as she stood on wobbly, stubby legs. She could have been no younger than five, rubbing at the tears pooling in her eyes. "I know how you feel," you began, crouching down to her level as she looked up at you, "adult things do suck." Little (name)'s lip quivered before she latched onto you in a great big hug. "Please don't let daddy marry me to Petey! Petey's daddy scares me!"

Your eyes widened, your body going stiff. "Whatever do you mean, little one?" She sobbed quietly into your shoulders, making you fall to your knees so she could stay standing upright. "He hurt me," she began, pulling away from you. The scene around you had changed, now morphing into the darkness of night-time. Little (name)'s appearance had changed, too; her once clean white, flowing dress was now dirtied and torn. There was dirt on her face, and bruises blooming on her arms. Behind her stood a dark figure, the only thing you could make out was the vibrant, green eyes of Astra. "But the black beast saved me from the bad man, and his friends." Your eyes went back to Astra, who was now becoming more visible than just bright, glowing eyes. "You, you saved her..." You trailed, watching as her dragon companion nodded solemnly. "I smelt horrible, horrible intentions on those men. I couldn't...I couldn't just leave her there. I have my own children, I could never wish something like that on any child." Her head dipped in a dispirited fashion, her gaze going soft as she looked at the smaller version of yourself that stood before you. "But..." You looked down at your hands, still the same as they always were, "but why am I only finding this all out now?"

"Because you don't belong here." Your head whipped around, to see what you thought was a reflection of yourself. However, this version of you had a tired look in her eyes, one of stress and countless memories she wished she didn't have to always remember. "You took my place. I don't even know how or why. I can't even take your place. I'm stuck here, with all these memories." With the wave of her hand, the scene before you changed, Little (name) and Astra vanishing before your very eyes. "No, wait!" You called out, but in the blink of an eye, they were gone. "What did you do to them?" You demanded, rising to your feet. "Relax, they were just a memory, anyways. Fragments of what happened, and how they felt in that moment." Your brows furrowed as you drew closer to the copy of yourself. "Was I, wait no, were you, no that's not right..." You trailed, stopping in front of yourself. "Were we really to marry Peter?" She 'pshed' waving a hand dismissively. "Do you think our father is an idiot? Of course not, Pete just kept telling us we would marry him when we grew up. He used to like us, it's just a shame his father did, too." Your face grew serious. "So, what do we do?"

"Nothing." She replied, smiling at your confused face. "It was all in the past. My past. But, since you took over this life, it's now your future. Just don't mess things up, okay? Don't let anyone know that you're not from here, from their world. If you do, well, let's just say you won't be too pleased with the outcome." She turned as if to walk away. "Wait!" You chased after her, skidding to a stop as she turned, giving you a curious look. "One question. Ask away." You gulped, wracking your mind for what to ask. It took a moment, but finally, you settled on one. "Why are you blending our memories? That swing, that park, those were all from happy memories." Your other version smiled, shaking her head as if she were laughing. "Because we can't escape fate, (name), no matter when or where we live out our lives. You saw the start of that in your world, but I finished it in mine. In yours, the most they did was harshly grab you. They were far too drunk to finish what they started. In mine, Astra saved me, when she and others from the nest were trying to steal livestock. Unlike your lucky encounter, they were fully going through with their plan. Your saviour was their foolishness, mine was my future sister."

"Then why am I here?" She tutted, waggling a finger. "Nope, that's more than one question. Maybe we'll meet again. If we do, I'll tell you then. But, for now, you need to clear that pretty little head of yours, before Hiccup wakes up." You had completely forgotten about that. The dreamscape was fading, as you started to wake up. "Am I ever going to see you again?" She laughed, shaking her head. "No more questions! But, you silly, silly goose, we are the same person, split apart by lifetimes. I'm always with you. We just won't chat for a while, that's all." And with that, your eyes opened, revealing the ceiling of Hiccup's bedroom.

"Oh, shit," you mumbled quietly, as to not wake Hiccup from his sleep, "that dream was too much." You silently groaned, looking outside and marvelling at the stars still left in the sky. It was soon to be dawn, and both Alpha and Chieftan would be up soon, preparing for another long day of hard work ahead of them. You slowly and gently slipped out of Hiccup's arms, replacing a pillow where you had just been. He grabbed onto it, cuddling into the fabric. Stifling a laugh, you changed as quickly and as quietly as you could, before making your way over to the heap of sleeping dragon across the room. "Sia myvish," you said in a hushed voice, nudging the black mass with your boot-clad foot. "Wake up, lazy scales." She huffed, opening an eye to glare at you, but she still got up, even if she did so begrudgingly. "Why are we up so early, it's not even daybreak." She replied in a quiet voice, blinking tiredly. "I need to clear my head, and I can't if Hic gets up before me," you glanced back at the auburn-haired man sleeping in his bed, "I don't want to be dragged around all day, y'know?" Astra rolled her eyes but nodded in agreement. The pair crept over to the window, you climbing onto her back as she stealthily crawled out of the window, before leaping and taking off.

"Where to?" Astra inquired, flying up higher into the cloudy sky, breaking through to reveal the last of the night-time stars as morning bled into the night. "We're going home." You replied, a determined look settling on your face.
