Chapter 42 - Bed of Thorns
Only when she thought things couldn't go wrong anymore , Rishi brought out a gun. "I can only be at peace when these highly privileged, spoiled siblings are dead!"
Gyan's feeble voice heard from behind. "Rishi da! You-"
Rishi's head turned swiftly towards Gyan. "Oh! I totally forgot you're here too..." he paused briefly before adding, "My little brother." Rishi's eyes narrowed at Gyan.
Shreya glanced at his way. The poor man was so much in shock that he couldn't even talk. He opened his mouth to say something, but words wouldn't come out.
Rishi took a step towards him before thinking otherwise and returned to his previous position. He glanced around the room; perhaps, counting the number of people he appointed to torture his enemies before ordering them, "Everyone, leave."
Gurung objected, "But, what about you Rishi babu?"
"I'll be alright. I have to clear some clouds between us. Plus, they don't have any evidences against me. I can simply fake a statement if I get caught by any chance. After all, I'm great at playing the innocent. Don't I..." he gazed at Abhimanyu slyly. "Abhimanyu?"
Abhimanyu said nothing, nor did he give any reaction.
Gurung started again, "But Rishi babu..." but got interrupted by Rishi. He snapped, "I said, leave!"
After that, the men didn't wait any longer. They left them. The last one to leave was Gurung. As soon as they let go, Shreya scrambled forward and almost leapt at Abhimanyu. "Abhi..."
Abhimanyu caught her as she collapsed on his chest. He reached behind her and untied her hands. She plucked off the tape from her mouth hastily before throwing herself at Abhimanyu. Wrapping her hands around and burying her head into his neck, she started sobbing full on. Abhimanyu tapped on the small on her back in a comforting way before they had to split as Rishi said, "Enough with the drama!"
Shreya pulled back and touched the wound on Abhimanyu's head. Blood smeared on her hand as well. Her gaze fell on his bloody right arm. Hot tears streamed down her face when she gazed back on his face as he fixed his glasses.
She opened her mouth as the first word rolled out of her mouth was, "Ritu..."
He blinked before his eyes shifted their focus on Rishi.
Gyan's faint voice sounded again from behind. "Why Rishi da?" He noticeably sounded broken.
Rishi turned towards him. "Why?" His eyes narrowed as he scoffed. "You're asking me why? Ask this question to you brother instead..." His eyes swept over to Abhimanyu speedily as he gritted his teeth. "Who snatched my life from me!"
Abhimanyu asked, "What do you mean?" His voice monotonous as always.
Rishi grinned. "It is unbelievable, right?" He paused momentarily before continuing, "How could you, who has spent almost all his life away from his family, possibly snatch my life from me? But trust me... you did!" He growled in the end. "If it weren't for you, I would have been there in your place... as Abhiraj Roy's son!"
Shreya's eyebrows curled in confusion.
Abhimanyu said, "Be specific."
"Such arrogance. Huh? Still so cold? Or is it your disorder?" Rishi smirked.
Shreya's eyes widened. How did he know?
When no one make a sound, Rishi talked on. "If things weren't messed up by your mother, Abhiraj Roy would've married my mom!" He yelled aloud. "And I would've been his son. My life- my life would've been easier!"
Shreya blinked, not understanding a single word.
Gyan suddenly hissed from pain. It caught Rishi's attention immediately. "Is it paining? Oh- I should feel sorry for you. But... I feel no compassion towards you, trust me. Cause I have suffered much more pain than this. I was born in a jail hospital. What else do you expect from me? I was born amidst pain and suffering to begin with!"
Shreya's mouth fell open. She tugged on Abhimanyu's shirt tighter as Rishi went on. "Your father, Abhiraj Roy is a selfish old man. He played with my mom's emotions, and then when he found met your mother, he just abandoned my mom and left her without thinking twice." He looked between the brothers cruelly and spat. "What my mom went through do you have any idea? Abhiraj Roy never cared for my mother, not even then, when she fell prey to that filthy monster Romeo. She let herself got manipulated just because she didn't want to miss the opportunity to have her love back. But, Abhiraj Roy... he ruined everything! Because of him... my mother had to serve prison for seven years! I had to spend my childhood among the blood thirsty monsters! Just because of your parents."
Shreya felt so confused by now. She didn't have any clue what Rishi was saying when Abhimanyu said, "Mrs. Zinnia Dutta Narayan had suffered what she deserved. She made a pact with my maa's rapist, or should I say your biological father?"
"Shut the fuck up!" Rishi growled. "He isn't my father. Shyam Narayan is my father!"
"Your mother met Shyam uncle after she served her prison years. How could he possibly be your father? Things cannot disappear simply because you've closed your eyes."
"Shut up!" Rishi shouted aloud. "Shut your mouth or I will shoot you right now!" He pointed the gun right at Abhimanyu.
"No!" Shreya screamed and threw herself before him.
Rishi's expression changed from perturbed to cruel immediately. "I must say, your wife helped me a lot to lure all of you in my trap." He chuckled. "She wasn't originally a part of my plan. She just happened to make it easier." He laughed out loud and withdrew his gun. There was a chair in the corner of the room. She hadn't seen it until now. Rishi dragged it in the middle of the room and sat down dangling his legs at the sides and tucked his chin on the back of the chair. "The first time I met her and learned about Gyan's feelings, the plan popped immediately in my head. I started plotting and circumstances were so favourable." He chuckled and crossed his arms and put it on the back of the chair while playing with the gun. "That night, at Gyan's party, the original plan was setting her and Gyan up. A leaked making out video of business tycoon's son would've made it spice up things. But who knew, it'd turn out spicier than my expectation." He grinned at Shreya then at Abhimanyu before his focus shifted to Gyan. "Originally, I installed the hidden camera in Abhimanyu's room to spy on his activities on the latest project. But, this stupid girl... hahahah!"
"So, that means... my drink... you mixed it up with..." Shreya murmured indistinctly.
"Of course, it was me. Who could it be otherwise? I mixed Ecstasy in your drink." He winked at her.
Shreya's eyes widened at the mention of the drug. Ecstasy or MDMA is a kind of stimulant drug that is made illegally and used for increasing energy or euphoria in the user's body. The main purpose of this drug is to make someone feel high. It's a feel-good drug, but a dangerous one not-to-mention. Ecstasy or MDMA – is basically known for its hallucinogenic side effects which may last up to 6 hours. It causes heat in body, dry mouth, blurred vision, sweating, anxiety, confusion, paranoia or high desire of receiving pleasure. The drug directly hits the thinking and memory of the user. It drastically increases the activity of brain chemicals – dopamine or serotonin. Overdose can lead to heart diseases, high blood pressure, even death.
"Wasn't it cool? I never got a chance to ask you about your experience. How was it by the way?" Then he feigned innocence. "Oh, I forgot. I have seen your reaction to it already. Even the whole world saw it. Hahaha!" He laughed out loud.
"You!" Gyan cried out.
"Oh?" He shifted his gaze on Gyan. "I'm so sorry your plan of revenge didn't work out quite right, although I tried my best."
Shreya looked over at Gyan and saw him clenching his teeth. Although he had no strength to raise his limbs, his eyes were shooting daggers at Rishi at this point.
"You should've been there at the restaurant. Then at least you could've pulled the trigger yourself." Rishi laughed. "What a gorgeous relationship between brothers! I have never enjoyed anything more than your hatred towards your brother." He chuckled again. "Even you know what? Back then, when you came to me crying, telling me your parents prefers your elder more than you, I found my pawn right then and there. How old were you then? Thirteen? When Abhimanyu came back after finishing his schooling, you were just so furious with him. You complained to me how he had become the centre of attention to your parents and they didn't anymore love you." He chuckled. "I knew then, you'll be my main weapon as I plot to turn this family down."
Rishi turned towards Abhimanyu. "Weren't you accusing me being Romeo's illegitimate son a few moments ago? Guess what? I know!" His smirk turned vicious. "And because of that reason, when I reached Vishwa, Romeo's elder brother, he took me in gladly. I met him in prison and told him my plans and he provided all the help I needed. Even, half of his work is now under my care. Isn't it amazing? I can be a gentleman and a mafia at the same time." He laughed again.
"So, it was you who attacked me and Papa that time at the party?"
"Of course! They were my girls. The waitresses I mean. I sent them to kill both of you. But they failed and Abhiraj Roy sent you away again. I couldn't do anything."
"Then why did you wait so many years?"
"I couldn't just kill Abhiraj Roy without getting into Permabell. I had to wait until I got into the company and, see my luck! I was appointed in the finance department." He threw his head back and throes of laughter erupted. "They... trusted... they trusted me with the company financing. Hahahaha!"
"So, it was indeed you!" Gyan gritted his teeth. "Dadabhai was right!"
Rishi laughed. "Your dadabhai has always been the right one, Gyan. It was you who never believed in him."
"But I trusted you! You broke my trust!"
"You shouldn't have had any expectations from me in the first place. It was your fault."
Gyan groaned. "You!"
"Save your strength." Rishi smirked and turned his head away. "You know what?" He pointed at Abhimanyu. "I've always been very jealous of you. You have everything in your life and yet you're impassive about everything, while I – ah, never mind."
"Why do you hate him so much?" Shreya asked feebly. "Had he ever done anything wrong with you?"
The corner of Rishi's eyes crinkled. "Who's got voice here? You want to know why I hate him so much? Then listen. It's because of him my mother never loved me. She always compared me with him. She always called him Abhiraj's son, and me as a criminal's son. She beat me senseless when I was a toddler, she beat me senseless when I was a kid and she beat me up senseless when I was a teenager. She never spared me even for the littlest of mistake. I still remember her saying, 'you can never compete with Abhiraj's son, you filthy creature! Why have you come to my life? Why didn't you just die?'" Rishi paused for a brief moment before resuming, "My adoptive father is a good man however. When he was still in his good condition, he tried showering me with love. But mom couldn't take it. Mom deliberately made him crippled and made it look like an accident. But I know the truth. I was there when she pushed father off the terrace. She turned towards me and flashed her cruellest smile. As if I was the one who was responsible for it. Such a nuisance!"
He went on. "Anyway, Shyam Narayan, my adoptive father, he's so decent that he never recognized all the unholy signs I had left uncovered up until now. To be honest, he's been too busy taking care of mom's temper throughout his life. He made a mistake and that's mom. That lady is too temperamental. She has no so-called sympathy towards anyone including me. She treated me like a trash throughout! Just because I was her mistake! Just because I was Romeo's blood and flesh. It was another thing that she couldn't conceive after having me. And that frustration she directed towards me. I didn't want any of it. Did I? Then why did I have to suffer too much?" He scoffed then waved his hand.
"But why the fuck am I telling you all this? It doesn't matter anymore. I have silenced her forever. Now she won't be able to shout at me."
"What?" Shreya whispered.
"Yeah. Before leaving here, I had to silence her. Now that old man can live in peace. He's well off without her." Rishi snorted.
"And what about the fire at the tea factory?" Abhimanyu asked.
"Oh! The tea factory. Yeah, I almost forgot about it. So, this Gurung reached me and made a pact. He was offering his help to destroy Permabell. How could've I say no? It was my plan from the start. He was just a pawn. Just like your little brother."
"And what about Didiya? Why did you pull her in?"
"Ah-" He turned his gaze at the wall where the projector screen was still focused. "Pretty Tiyasha. Trust me, I had no ill intension towards her. But she was too clingy. She wanted to mend her broken heart after her ex. And have you ever seen a dog not eating his meat served right in front of him?" Rishi shrugged. "But the problem arose, when she told me she's pregnant. I don't fucking want this baby."
"Y-you performed a forceful abortion on didiya?" Shreya mumbled, horror-stricken.
"Of course, I did. I had no other options. I had to think it through. And that's when the whole planning came to me. I have already ruined Jatayu's name. The latest product launch, the shortage of fund, the quality compromise – it was all me." Rishi laughed hysterically.
"But why did you torture us?"
"Just for the fun of it!" Rishi growled. "As simple as that! You'll have to live with the trauma your whole life. Just like I have been doing... being a rapist's and an abusive bitch's son. That's my revenge! Hahahah!" He pointed the gun at Abhimanyu, then at Gyan, then back at Abhimanyu. "Or should I just kill you? What do you say?"
Shreya noticed Abhimanyu slowly standing up. She also stood up and tried to stand in front of him, in case the psycho decided to pull the trigger. But Abhimanyu pulled on her arm and forced her behind him before he fixed his spectacles and buried one of his hands in his pocket. Shreya held on to his other arm, the bloody one. A moment later, Abhimanyu opened his mouth. "What I say?" He drawled before adding, "Did you really expect I'd come here single-handedly?"
Rishi's eyebrows curled in confusion, and so was Shreya's. She heard an indistinct noise of snorting from behind. She glanced behind for a second and saw Gyan faintly smiling. His bloody teeth were on display as he made an eye contact with her.
Rishi asked quickly, "What? What do you mean?" A hint of panic laced in his voice.
She turned her head back at the front and saw Rishi unlocking the gun. He was taking it seriously, and wouldn't think twice to pull the trigger.
Abhimanyu answered in his usual tone. "It's not your plan anymore." He paused for a second before finishing. "It's mine."
A loud crash sounded from behind as the door flew open and sent flying away. Rishi caught off guard and ducked his head from getting hit. As soon as he covered his head, Abhimanyu took a step forward and kicked him on his stomach. He staggered behind and there several footsteps sounded from behind Rishi.
Two policemen caught both of Rishi's arms and another one snatched the gun away from his hand. Rishi looked so lost.
"How? How did they find out?"
Abhimanyu bent down and gave the heal of his left shoe a twist. The heal came off and from inside it, came a little device.
Rishi's eyes first went from disbelief to furiously mad! "You!" He tried to shook himself free from the policemen's grasp. But it was to no avail.
"This is a transmitter. It has a speaker as well. So, whatever you spoke, has been recorded already." An officer made his way to the front and explained. "It was risky for sure. But when Mr. Abhimanyu said he knows the culprit, we proceeded with the plan."
"You knew it was me?" Rishi asked. "Since when?"
"Since the day Gyan put fire in my office." Abhimanyu said calmly.
"What? It was a long time ago! How – how did you – even find out?"
"Gyan was missing for a week just before the incident. He was only 17. I knew someone was manipulating and helping him. And then I checked the CCTV footage."
"But I wasn't there."
"I know. But your infamous skull lighter was!"
Realization washed over his face as Abhimanyu added, "Among us, only you smoke Rishi. And who hasn't seen the skull shaped lighter of yours? I couldn't say anything back then, because I had no proof. You could've turned everything against Gyan as well. It was very much possible from your place. I had to have a solid proof, and since then I have been waiting for your next move. Although Shreya's entrance took a off turn in the beginning, it brought extra evidences against you. Why did you think I thought of you in the first place when my brother and cousin went missing? Was it because I consider you as my confidante? I don't Rishi. I don't make friends Rishi. You should've been more careful."
"Then why- why did you sent Gyan beforehand knowing he might get tortured?"
"I knew you wouldn't be here in person and would send your men instead. Only way to catch you was red-handed, along with your own confession. Everything was my plan, except Shreya and Ritu." Abhimanyu glanced at Shreya for a quick second before turning back at the officer. "Take him away officer. The procedures are awaiting."
The policemen handcuffed Rishi and dragged him out.
Two pairs of medics came in with stretchers. A pair went and picked Ritu on to it and left immediately. The other pair went towards Gyan, who was leaning on the wall, his strength seemed to have diminished.
Shreya and Abhimanyu went ahead towards him. Before the medics reached for him, Gyan looked up at Abhimanyu and mouthed, "You always win."
