Chapter 38- The Last Train Ride

The party in the Great Hall was bigger and better than any of the seventh years had expected it to be. There had been a vote held on whether or not they were going to let the other grades participate in the party, and in the end, the answer had been yes.

"This isn't just a graduation party," Hermione said. "It is also the celebration of our first year without the fear of the Dark Lord resting above our heads- we celebrate together."

And so it was decided- all grades would participate at the seventh year graduation. The Great Hall was being prepared by the teachers as the students readied themselves for the party, bustling around with excitement.

"What sort of thing do you wear to a graduation party?" Ron had asked, holding up a casual shirt and a fancy one, of which was white, with a black cloak to match. "I mean- casual or classy?"

As if in answer, and owl swept into the boys dormitory window, and all five of the boys turned the heads to see who it was for.

"Probably Harry's- he always gets letters." Seamus says.

Dean frowns. "It looks like Neville's- it's sitting on his bed."

Harry walks over and plucks the note from the owl's grasp, and he holds out a finger. The owl flies towards him and perches on his finger as he carries it over to Hedwig's empty cage. He sets it down inside and pours in some of Pig's bird foot and a bit of water, and the owl starts to take it all in happily, hooting with joy.

Harry looks at the name on the envelope. "To all seventh year boys attending the graduation party. You will wear casual clothes. You may dress fancy if you so wish, as long as you don't look like a rich snob, or a trash can that has been run over by a garbage truck. Happy Graduation! Professor M. McGonagall."

"Darn." Dean pipes up. "I guess Seamus won't be able to attend at all."

Seamus frowns. "Why not?"

"Because," Dean says, taking the letter from Harry and pointing at it the second to last sentence. "It specifically says that you can not come looking like a trash can that has been run over by a garbage truck. And, I mean, unless we find a lot of makeup, we can't stop your face from looking like that."

Seamus punches Dean's shoulder as Neville says, "I think Ginny has some you can use, Seamus!"

Harry laughs, turning away from the boys to his trunk, pulling out a pair of khakis and a black shirt that he had purchased from a muggle store for himself.

When the war had ended, Harry had taken a day to go out and buy himself some clothes that weren't the baggy hand-me-downs from Dudley that he had been wearing for eighteen years. He had gotten a letter of money from Aunt Petunia and Dudley containing some money for him to go shopping- and it had been made clear that Vernon never wanted to see 'the boy' again, but Aunt Petunia and Dudley had said that maybe they could try to start over in the future. Dudley had even given Harry his phone number.

So Harry had taken a trip down to a muggle clothing store not far from Privet Drive, called Arnie's, and he had bought himself an entire new wardrobe, and he also bought wizarding clothes with his own money.

Ron glanced over at his outfit. "Khakis?"

"Mmhmm." Harry says. "A casual yet more presentable pants choice."

Ron tilts his chin up. "Yeah?"

"Yup."

"Do you think Luna likes men in khakis?" He asks, pulling a pair from his trunk.

Harry shrugs. "Probably. Too bad you aren't a man."

"Shut up, Harry." Ron says, hitting Harry over the head with his pillow.

~~~~~
The Great Hall was amazing.
There wasn't many words that could be used to describe it- it was beautiful.
The sun had set, so the sky above was black and dotted with glittering white stars, like salt on a black table cloth. The four long tables and benches had been pushed away, the Slytherin and Hufflepuff table had been left on the sides for elaborate and decorative trays of food to be held on. In the center of each table was a large chocolate fountain, one of which was milk chocolate, and the other being white chocolate. Fruit was placed around the fountains for dipping- strawberries, pineapple, banana, mango, peaches, cherries, apples, muskmelon, and other kinds Harry was sure he didn't know existed. Ham and turkey was in several trays, with other side dishes like mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and corn were around them.
The Hufflepuff table consisted of a beautifully decorated graduation cake that was large enough to feed everyone in the hall, as well as other various deserts like treacle tart and cupcakes, as well as a small tray of rock cakes, courtesy of Hagrid. The Hufflepuff table also supplied the drinks- pumpkin juice, lemonade, sparkling water, water, firewhisky (with an age-specific spell cast upon it so that only the teachers could drink it, and only a few cups) and chocolate milk.
Harry entered with all of his friends by his side- Ron, Hermione, Luna, Ginny, and Neville. He grinned at the sight of all of the dancing people in the room. Everyone together and happy.
Neville and Ginny ran to dance, and Luna told Ron that she had to go get a drink for them all.
Before she left, Harry spotted George standing over by the food table, a cup in his hand and watching the crowd of people. "Luna, we'll be over by George, okay?" He said, and she nods, disappearing into the crowd to go get them all a cup of pumpkin juice.
The trio made their way through the crowd and over to George, who smiled them. "Alright Harry, Ron, Hermione?"
Hermione smiles. "Fine, thank you George. Are you alright? Why are you just standing here?"
Harry grins. "Yeah, mate. It's your graduation too."
George's smile is thin, as if it was a struggle just to keep it upon his face. "Just thinking about Fred. It's harder to have fun without him here with me."
Ron blinks rapidly, as if he was trying to blink the tears from his eyes, and when he speaks his voice wavers. "Yeah, it is. But look mate." Ron points over to Angelina Johnson, who was standing alone, drinking something from a red cup, glancing around the room. "Your girlfriend is looking for you. Go talk to her."
George's eyes fall on Angelina, and the sight of her makes him smile. "Yeah, you're right. Thanks Ron."
He stops leaning on the wall and makes his way over to Angelina, who's face immediately bursts into a smile as soon as she sees him.
Hermione raises an eyebrow. "I didn't know they were dating."
Ron nods just as Luna comes into view, handing them all cups of pumpkin juice. "Yeah, they started going out at the ball at the start of the year. Thank you, Luna." He says, taking the cup from her.
She smiles softly. "George alright?"
"He's fine now." Hermione says, and Luna nods.
"That's good. So, Ron and I are moving into the house next to the two of you, right? On Rowena Lane?" When they all nod, she claps her hands happily. "This will be so delightful! We'll all be together!'
"Oh," Ron says, as if he had just thought about it. "Neville is buying the house down the road from us, and he's about five houses away. Ginny might be moving in with him."
Hermione raises an eyebrow again. "Ginny and Neville are dating?"
Harry stares at her. "Blimey, Hermione. Do you live in a box? They've been dating since they went to the ball together."
Hermione smiles slightly. "I don't live in a box- I've just had other priorities this year, in case you haven't noticed."
Then a song by the Weird Sisters starts to play, and Harry grabs her arm. "Well, that's all over now. I like this song, so I think we should make dancing to it a priority." And then he pulls her onto the dance floor.
They swirl and spin, Harry a little clumsy and Hermione as graceful as ever. But that doesn't matter to Harry, all he cares about is dancing wth his girlfriend on the last day at Hogwarts.
~~~~~

Hagrid stood in front of the scarlett train, seeing them off with tears the size of saucers dripping down his massive face. "Now, don' ya be forgettin' 'bout me. I expec' a visit every month, no exceptions. An' Fang an' Buckbeak, they'll be missin' ya too. An' Grawp... seems like on'y yesterday I was tellin' ya ter stop worryin' 'bout Nicholas Flamel." He lets out another loud sob, and pulls them all into another rib cracking hug. "An' now yer all grown up!"

"It's alright Hagrid." Hermione groans from his grasp, sucking in a breath when he lets go. "We'll definitely come to see you."

"Yeah Hagrid." Ron says. "We can't leave you behind."

Harry smiles. "No way are we leaving our best friend behind."

And once Harry said that, Hagrid burst into tears. "You three think o' me as yer bes' friend?" He howls, and then hugs them again. When he lets go, he sniffles. "Oh, I almos' forgot." He rummages around in his many pockets for a moment before he pulls out a key. "I fixed up Sirius's bike fer ya, Harry. It's waitin' at the Weasley's for ya. I also 'ave a picture," He pulls out a large picture frame. "Bu' this is too big fer ya to take with ya right now. I'll mail it to ya. It's connected ter Dumbledore's portrait, so ya can talk ter him."

One more hug and a tearful goodbye later, the three of them collapse into a compartment. When the lady with the trolley comes around, they order some of everything on her cart, so that they could fully experience their last trip on the train.

When she walked away, Hermione, who was smiling down at the pictures of her, Ron and Harry on their own chocolate frog cards, speaks. "So when we get off the train, we're going to go to the Weasley's to get our stuff, and then move in?"

Harry nods. "Yes ma'am."

"What day are we moving in?"

"Tonight. We were going to stay one more night at the Weasley's but Andromeda is dropping Teddy off with us tonight."

Ron pipes up. "I'm moving in with Luna tomorrow. My mum insisted on me staying another night. She says she doesn't want anymore kids to move out."

Hermione looks over at Ron sadly. "Don't you feel bad? Your mum and dad have to see all of their kids leave in one shot."

Ron frowns. "Yeah, sort of. But she'll be alright. We'll visit tons."

"What about George?' Harry asks, draping an arm around Hermione's shoulders and pulling her into him. "Is he keeping the shop?"

Ron nods. "Yeah. He says that they worked way too hard on it just to lose it now. And he thinks he's strong enough to go back." Ron bites into a frog. "I told him that when I get tired of being an Auror, I'll come to help him in the shop."

"Oh!" Hermione exclaims. "I set up job interviews for all of us on Monday of next week for an Auror position. They said that we don't have to do the training either, because we 'proved ourselves worthy of the position while fighting in the war'. Quote, unquote."

Harry grins. "Nice."

Ron nods. "Thanks Hermione."

And so, the trio spent their final trip on the train engine talking about how they were all going to lead their life afterwards, and recalling all of the brilliant times they had had at Hogwarts. Though they would miss it much, they were excited to start the new phase of their life.
