Chapter 7

Three months passed since Fiona ran into Martie's sister. In those three months Fiona had continued to ignore the urge to contact Martie, despite the fact that the desire was growing rapidly by the second. She would usually have to set her phone across the room, avoid thinking of Martie, and turn her phone off at times. She still felt a pang in her chest like a needle when she thought of the break up that occurred, but she knew it was getting better slowly.

As autumn turned into winter, the air got chillier and the ground more icy. Everyone was starting to put away their Thanksgiving decorations and pull out their Christmas ones. Lights glittered all over Fiona's neighborhood, making it look a lot like what she expected to see in the North Pole. Snow had yet to greet her town, but she knew there would likely be some this year. Everyone was in good spirits, even Fiona's teachers at school whom usually were strict with their students.

Fiona's spirits were very high as well, mainly because she saw Garrett nearly every day after school. He, like her, wanted to major in the study of world history and culture and they would share their opinions with each other a lot when they got together. Fiona also helped Garrett with his math homework he got from his college, since Fiona did excellent in the area of math. After they got their work done, they'd do some research on a random country or culture and take notes over it before comparing them and writing a random paper for no particular reason.

Soon enough, as Fiona had expected, snow had payed a visit to the town. Fiona greeted it like an old friend or relative coming home for a few days. Fiona loved snow, it's pure and innocent appearance, the smell of freshness it brought, and most of all: The peaceful attitude it provided.

And as she gazed out her bedroom window the Saturday morning it appeared in the neighborhood, she couldn't push away the giddy feeling she always had when she saw the first winter's snow. Fiona watched from inside her room as the snow continued to lazily float down from the sky above. She decided she wanted to go outside, be a child again, and play in it.

She dressed in some soft dark jeans, her heavy snow boots, a burgundy sweater, a puffy black heavy coat, and her black scarf. She felt like she was missing something, though. She looked around her bedroom, seeing if she might be missing something. Her gloves were downstairs, so it's not them..

Garrett! Her mind suggested eagerly. Fiona groaned inwardly and shook her head to clear him from her thoughts. Garrett had much better, if not more important, things to do than play with her in the snow like children. A blush of shame and embarrassment crossed her cheeks when she realized how stupid she was sounding to herself.

I could call Penelope.. She thought silently, trying to think of friends she could invite.

No. Penelope hated the snow with a deep passion. Definitely not Penelope, then. To suggest such a thing to her is like suggesting someone to jump off a cliff.

By the end of her thinking, nobody she thought of would probably agree to have a snow day with her.

Garrett. She thought again, causing her to bite down on her lip. A sigh of frustration left her mouth as she stormed over to her charging cell phone. My funeral when he say no.. Fiona thought angrily.

She dialed Garrett's number and brought the phone to her ear nervously. She could not help the feeling of excitement and worry rush through her body like a drink going down her throat, she was so nervous. If he turned her down, she would look like a fool and yet if he said yes..

She took a deep breath and scolded herself for sounding like a lovesick puppy. She began to pace around her room as the phone rang. She was sure she would burn holes into her carpet from the amount of pacing she was doing in that thirty seconds of ringing.

"Hello?" Garrett's voice asked from the other line. Fiona bit her lip when she heard him and urged herself to stay calm and ask the question normally.

"Hey, it's Fiona," she responded, surprised how casual she sounded right now. She smiled inwardly to herself and gave herself a mental high five for not sounding stupid.

"Fiona!" Garrett said cheerfully, "Hey!"

Fiona felt her cheeks warm up slightly as she tucked some of her loose, wavy hair behind her ears. She walked over to her bed and sat down on it, and instantly her feet tapped against the carpeted floor under her. It was a habit of Fiona's, mainly when she got nervous did she do this.

"Hey," she repeated, clearing her throat as her cheeks warmed up even more by the second. Get it over with already, silly girl! She thought in frustration. "Um, I was wondering if you wanted to come over and help me shovel snow?"

Damn it! She inwardly cursed once the words escaped her lips. That just made her sound stupid and needy, not like she wanted to hang out. Good going, Fiona, can't you actually come up with something good to say?

But luck seemed to be in her favor for once, because Garrett's reply was, "Sure! I'm really bored right now since I finished homework. Nothing to do, you know?"

"Right," Fiona agreed, a smile starting to form her lips. She resisted the urge to jump up and down out of pure happiness. "I totally get that."

He chuckled in response, sounding amused. "So should I meet you at our usual place or do you want to give me your address..?" He trails off to let Fiona finish the question.

"Oh!" Fiona smacked her forehead. "Yeah sure! I'll text you the address, alright? My house is pretty easy to find."

"Okay," Garrett told her, hanging up. The minute he disconnected, Fiona pulled her phone away from her ear and tapped the icon to message Garrett. She sent him directions to her house and then went back downstairs again, grabbing a black beanie on her way. She slipped it on her head once she reached the end of the stairs and searched for her gloves. She found them resting on the coffee table lazily and she grabs them, putting them on while humming.

She glanced outside her window and noticed the snow was still falling, and if anything it would only increase if not started to be cleared. Fiona went through her garage, grabbing two snow shovels and opening up the garage door. She placed one shovel on the wall near the driveway for Garrett, and then began to shovel the snow.

As Garrett approached her in his car, she waved. He gave her his cheeky smile and ran up to grab the shovel. The two worked to shovel the driveway together, and Fiona knew then and there she was crushing on Garrett.
