Chapter 3
Cassandra flapped her wings as she soared over the town. Her mind reeled with what just transpired. She actually did it. She killed someone. Sweat beaded her brow. What was Dad going to say? How would he react? Butterflies swarmed in her stomach. No doubt about it, she would be sent to jail. Not just any jail, but the prison on Neevitat Isle for murders like her.
A building loomed in the distance. Its pentacle reached into the clouds allowing flyers, such as herself, quick entrance into her guild. Dragon Claw was her home, the place where she grew up, trained in magic of all type and took jobs to help better the country. A shadow overcame her. Cassandra squealed as she dove, causing the blade to miss her shoulder.
The fairy closed her wings until she neared the ground. Opening them once more she flew into the sky and took in her surroundings. Did they already know? Did the guards send an assassin to over take her because of how dangerous she had proven to be? Wind whistled in her ear as the shadow came up behind her once more. The pink orb in the staff she held shone bright. She spun towards him, "Holy Essence!" The orb glowed bright pink destroying the shadow and revealing a Rekin within its grasp.
Cassandra giggled. "Draco what are you doing here? I thought you were out in the Paʻulia Sea searching for reports of Icerr." The fairy placed a hand over the orb cancelling out the light. As an illusionist it was safe to say a light spell was her strongest weapon if used correctly. Especially a high powered spell such as that.
"You're getting stronger, fair maiden." He laughed, "Perhaps someday, you will qualify for sainthood as the strongest female of your racist."
The fairy couldn't help but laugh. Sure she was one of the top females in her guild, but she had a long way to go before she could ever best a real mage in a fight, after all, she hadn't perfected her dragon soul yet for fighting and her illusions were meant more for distractions and unnerving her opponent then defeating them. However, when she could get a win through smoke and mirrors it left her with an elated feeling of success.
Draco laughed as he held his sword once more ready for a strike. Cassandra held her staff up as well. He used a special kind of magic that allows him to blind into the shadows. A magic that has proven to be useful on missions where stealth was required. "I can't continue this fight right now." She sighed as she lowered her rod. "I actually need to speak to father right away."
Letting out a sigh, he threw his hand towards the pentacle giving her the go ahead to enter the guild. Cassandra smiled as she flapped her wings and went inside. She closed her wings and dropped her speed, allowing herself to fall through the stoney tower. After her meeting, she would be more than happy to continue her battle, provided her father didn't kill her or have her arrested first.
Nearing the bottom, a light came into her view. She opened her wings in time to zoom over the heads of her fellow guild mates. As normal, fights were breaking out between the members. She couldn't help but laugh. To anyone on the outside it would look like they were killing one another. A bolt of lighting shot past her, she moved over to avoid the blast. "Watch where you're aiming, Antonio." She giggled.
After watching the sights below, her eyes narrowed in on guards that had walked into the guild hall. They approached a male that was covered in red fur with a fluffy tail. He was a red fox animaloid. Cassandra turned pale. Why were they here? Why were they speaking to her father? The guild master flicked her tail as they spoke. His left ear twitched as she drew nearer. "I will take care of it," he grumbled.
Fire flamed up on his fur. "I said I will speak to her." Cassandra landed and closed her wings tight against her back. Her father could control fire as if it was a part of his body. Needless to say, when he was mad, his fur would dance with flames. She approached him with care. Though his back was to her, the guards kept their eyes trained on her. She opened her mouth but no words came up, her mouth was dry or body numb. They were here for her. What did he mean by 'he'll take care of it?'
A shadow appeared behind the guards. Draco hit them on the back of their heads before disappearing on the floor. The guards spun around looking for their attacker. Master Roku turned and narrowed her fox eyes at her. "Office, now." Cassandra dropped her head, opened her wings and hovered up to the balcony that held their upper level.
Whimpering, she hovered down the small hall with doors on the left side. Stopping in front of an oak door with a golden paw handle, she stared at the sign on the door, "Roku Luna," was embossed in gold. This was a nightmare, her father was going to kill her for ending that man. Tears welled up in her eyes, what should she tell him? She didn't do it on purpose, did she? She knew she deserved any punishment he would give, but she didn't want her life to end so soon.
Pushing the door open, she hovered inside. The room was small, yet cozy. There was a desk on the right side of the room, with a bookcase at the back and a couch on the left side. Two arm chairs rested in front of the desk for visitors. Cassandra sat down on the evergreen cushions. Pictures of her and Roku dotted the walls of the office. She couldn't help but smile, even though she was adopted, he really was the best father she could ask for.
The door slammed open causing her to turn her head towards it. Her father walked in. "Cassandra," he began. She swallowed a lump in her throat as she watched him take a seat in the black chair behind his desk. "Is it true that you killed a thug outside of Jacob's Emporium?" Cassandra straightened her back. Her fear was true, he knew. Now the question was what was going to happen to her.
A smile pulled at Roku's lips as he let out a hearty laugh. She cocked her head at him as her eyes stared on with surprise. What was so funny? She knew she had done something wrong. She just wanted to get the punishment over with already. "I'm proud of you my dear. I have tried teaching you mirages and it looks like you finally mastered it. I told you only the strongest of your type could perform such feats."
The fairy stared bewildered. She killed him, she knows she did. What did he mean it was all a mirage there was no way that was right. "Imagine," He continued, "the look on the crooks face as he watched himself die. I wish I was there to see it." Roku leaned back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling, though it does seem Larissa thinks you killed the crook so I'll have a word with her later."
"But Daddy, I,"
"Yes, Kit?"
Cassandra looked away. She wanted to tell him he was wrong but how? She didn't want him to lose faith in her. She bawled her hands into fists. She knew what needed to happen, she was going to run away until this matter could be resolved. He was wrong about the Mirage, she felt it in her heart. She didn't even understand what happened. All she understood was that she felt the need to end a life and she did. "Thank you for understanding, I don't think the guards did."
"They just wanted to make sure you were okay. The shop owner told them you were attacked brutally and what he had witnessed. After you created that double and left the original shook in his boots so hard that he was an early pick up, just another day in the life of a wizard. Now, go downstairs, Kit. I have some paperwork to attend to. It's only a matter of time before I get more paperwork on this incident."
Cassandra nodded as she hovered and headed towards the door. Her body trembled. Perhaps her father was right, perhaps she overreacted. It had been said that unless the welder knew it was casted, it could be full even the mage who conjured it.
The fairy shook her head hard. If that was the case why did the guards show up and why did her father tell them he would take care of it? He didn't scold her or punish her, instead she received praise. Opening her wings, she jumped off the balcony and flew towards the ceiling and out into the cool evening air. Hopefully, after a good night's rest, everything would make more sense.
