Why am I Doing This?
As it turned out, the ginger was called Wally. And the other redhead was Megan, and then there was Robin and Conner and Artemis. Aqualad I didn't need a name for, not really, but since saying that aloud would end up with very uncomfortable questions, I bit down my want to object and shook his hand.
I wrung my hands together and chewed the inside of my lip. My nails scraped the inside of my palms as i stood in silence, all eyes on me. Canary pressed her hands down on my shoulders. She squeezed before releasing.
"I'm going to take her to get some clothes. Kaldur, do you mind making sure one of the spare rooms is ready?'
"Wait," I said. "Why can't I keep staying where I am?"
""You can, I just want to make sure you have some place to sleep if you need to stay over while they're on a mission. Do you want to get woken up at midnight by Robin breaking down your door?"
"No???"
"Exactly." Canary worked her fingers under my scarf and lifted, letting me duck out from under its weight. Rolling my shoulders, I reached to take it from her. To my surprise she didn't let me, instead sitting it on the floor. Her deft fingers unlatched the shoulder pads, letting them drop to the floor. "Kneepads and shorts."
Rolling my eyes, I took them off. I felt bare, even though I wore leggings beneath them. Not having as much water left me feeling exposed, and not in the fun way. Canary shrugged out of her dark blue leather jacket. Without a word, she offered it to me, and she fixed me with a steady stare until I slipped it on.
Canary nodded and looked at the others. "We'll be back in a few hours. Try not to die." She rested her hand on my back and led me away from the living room. Away from them, all of the weight pressing in on me lessened. "Are you okay?" asked Canary.
"Really that obvious?'
"You don't have to do this if you don't want to."
"No, I want to it's...it's just-" I sighed. I shook my head, the two strands of hair framing my face swayed. "-a lot."
Canary nodded. She kept her hand where it was as she led me out of the Cave. The ramp sealed with a hiss behind us. The clearing was small, pressed between the mountain and the surround forest. Sunlight dappled the ground within the treeline. Small movement drew my attention, and from the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a dryad merging back with her tree. I didn't get a chance to talk to any of them to let them know I was aware of what I am. It would draw too much attention from Canary if I started talking to a tree.
And really, what's the worst the could happen? They call Camp and ask them to send a satyr my way?
"If you want we can enroll you in the local high school."
I looked at Canary. "And how would you like to do that without knowing my name?"
She smiled. "Fake names are always an option. And trust me, enough of the League has connections with someone who can doctor some paperwork. It could be a good chance to give you some normalcy. God knows that you haven't had that for a while."
"At least this year of my life took longer to get messed up than the last one." Though I'm pretty sure all my enemies would have to speedrun it in order to beat my sixteenth. And even then it would be nearly impossible.
Once in the city, i expected Canary to pull out a phone or a map. Instead she grabbed my arm and pulled me through the streets and into a random store. I stood and stared blankly as she looked at different clothes. Occasionally, as I followed her around the nearly empty store, I'd reach out and pull my fingers along the sleeves of shirts. Fashion, I could care less about, practicality and mobility I didn't have much choice with that. Anything that restricted my movements could get me killed. And plus, who wants to wear scratchy shirts anyway?
"What about this one?" Canary asked, holding up a shirt.
"I'm not wearing a Batman shirt."
"He's not that bad."
"He glares at me constantly."
"He glares at everyone constantly."
I sighed. "I'm going to go look at the hoodies." They were close by and well within her sight, meaning she'd have no issue with me looking at them. As it went, there really wasn't much in the way of plain ones. Navy blue, black, and yellow. Hero merch, though, there was quite a bit in way of selection. Manhunter, Bats, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Latern, and- "Really?" I looked at Canary as she pulled down one of her own.
"Hey, I am allowed to buy things with my name attached to them." She added it to the shopping cart. "Besides, it helps my numbers when we do our yearly review. And I want bragging rights over my idiot husband."
"Based on what I've seen, you already do. How did he think arm wrestling the strongest man on the planet was going to go?"
"Obviously not with him ending up through the table," said Canary as she shook her head. "If you think this is good enough, I'm going to go pay."
Okay, first off, thank you to all the people who waited patiently and did not bother me for an update or tell me the exact number of days its been since I've updated
And i have finally completed some of my other books so my friend so graciously agreed not to beat me with a cardboard tube if I started working on this.
And in my free time (though what's really free time in college amiright?) I-
did this.
See yah
