thirty one | water tunnels & warm feelings
Zayn
"You know, I do like it, but I still prefer the animals that live on land." Rose pulled a terrified expression at the ocean animals that swum above us, especially at the shark. I laughed a little, continuing to walk through the aquarium tunnel.
My laughter died, I smiled instead. "I do too but look at it." I pointed my finger up and gazed above me as I saw the variety of sea animals swimming above us. I thought the idea was quite cool, it was as if you were walking through the water itself.
"What if this breaks? All the fish and sharks will come down and they'll eat us up alive while we drown." Rose quickly stepped aside when a shark came too near to the window in her opinion.
I laughed, "That won't happen, Rose. They obviously tested the glass a thousand times before actually putting the fish and stuff in here."
"Well, I don't know." She mumbled and I couldn't help but laugh again, secretly thinking she was precious. She let out a chuckle as well and sighed in relief when we finally got out of the tunnel, moving into another dark room that was full of smaller aquariums with any sea creature there was probably to exist.
Standing still in front of a rather large aquarium, Rose squealed. "Nemo and Dory! I had always wondered if they'd actually get along in real life." She exclaimed, her dark brown eyes full of wonder.
Smiling, I decided to copy her enthusiasm, secretly wondering if she had never seen them in real life before. "Wow! I've always wanted to see them in real life. Never knew they were this little."
"You never did see them in real life?" Rose questioned, a small frown visible on her forehead.
Looking at her, I couldn't keep a straight face and laughed. "Of course I did, who hasn't?"
Rose raised her eyebrows but smiled cheekily, "Do you like Disney movies?"
"They were my childhood. I could still watch them now, though. I love them. I think they're good. What about you?" We slowly walked further and stopped when people were crossing us so now and then.
"Me too. I love them as well." Rose smiled as we slowly made our way outside again.
Squinting my eyes as the sudden bright sun basically blinded me, I noticed Rose did the same. Once we were both used to the bright sky, Rose reached for the map, her eyes scanning the drawing and route. "Where'd you want to go?"
"Let's just follow the Brave Lion Route." I said simply, seeing it was closest to the Aquarium, where we had just been. All the routes from the different areas had names especially made for children but I thought they were quite cool as well. I really wanted to go to the safari area as I had always been fascinated by lions.
Rose nodded, "Sounds fun. Let's go."
We followed the Lion footsteps on the ground and we eventually arrived at the savanna area with lions, giraffes, hyenas, elephants and more, though, my eyes lingered on the lions. I couldn't help but smile when I saw them, they seemed so mighty, yet so cuddly in some, strange ways. Kings of the animal Kingdom, but the only thing they did was sleeping. I stared at them for quite some time, but when I turned my attention back to Rose, I noticed her staring at me.
"They're so.. beautiful." I sighed softly, following the lion with my eyes as she walked over to the male, lazily lying down against him.
Rose smiled warmly at me, nodding as she agreed. "They really are."
After we had watched them for quite some time, read the information board about these lions and visiting the other savanna animals, we decided to go towards the jungle area of the zoo, Rose basically gasping as she read the map. "What?! You can get into the monkeys cage and maybe cuddle one! I want that. Do you?"
I glanced over her shoulder, at the map and the part she was reading. I smiled excitedly, "Yes, of course! That sounds really cool. I didn't know you could do that."
"I didn't know that either." Rose folded the map neatly and stuffed it in the pocket of her denim jacket. "I hope we can take a photo with one, that'd be really cool."
"Yeah." I smiled at her while we continued walking. It wasn't that near and it was a little tiring seeing the state my body was in right now, but who was complaining today? I was out with Rose and that was all I could have wished for, for now.
Rose tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, eyeing me. "Do you have pets?"
Looking at her, I nodded, "I've got a dog and we have cats. What about you? Do you have any pets?" I wondered, realising I didn't even know that much of Rose yet, even when this wasn't necessarily relevant information- it was still nice to know.
"I've always wanted a dog." Rose pouted, "but my mum didn't want one. She didn't mind a cat though, so we have a cat."
I chuckled, "No dog but a cat?"
"Yeah because she was like, 'you'll have to walk your dog but I know you guys, you'd look at it once and who gets to walk her every single day after that? Me.'" Rose chuckled as she mocked her mother's voice.
It made me laugh, she sounded sweet. "I know that sentence. I used to walk my dog every day though, until now.. of course."
Rose nodded understandably, "Do you miss your dog? That's a stupid question, maybe, but.."
"There's no such thing as stupid questions. But yeah, I miss him a lot. I even miss my annoying cat who always attacked my legs and dug his nails into me for no reason." My eyes squinted as I laughed, though, I felt the slight pain in my heart. Oh, how I wished to be at home.
Rose laughed softly, "I can imagine. The duty of a cat, though." We both chuckled at that, continuing to walk in silence until we had arrived at the jungle area, the monkeys to be specific.
Before we entered the room full of monkeys, there were a few rules and tips so our time in there would be the most fun, as they said. There were rules such as stuffing away your phones and other stuff as they were the kind of animals to just steal things.
I frowned when I saw the rule 'take off all your hats' as they could, apparently, grab that as well. Rose noticed it and sighed softly, "Don't do it. They won't grab that. It probably happened once and that customer was probably complaining about it." She whispered as there were people around us, not wanting to gain too much attention.
"Yeah.." I sighed a little, but felt warm because of Rose. She was thoughtful, made me feel at ease and more secure of myself in these situations.
"Come on, let's go." Rose softly grabbed my wrist and pulled me inside the area. My skin tingled on the place where her fingers were softly digging into my skin and I couldn't help but stare at it for a while. I smiled by myself again, even when she let go.
We walked around, admired and stared. Eventually, we crouched down near a small monkey who didn't shy away from us. We admired it from so close, the two of us silent in awe. "Hiya." I whispered as he curiously walked over to me.
"You're so cute! Let me take a picture of you. No, even better. You and Zayn." Rose fished her phone out of her pocket and snapped a few photo's of me and the monkey. The monkey stayed with us for another while until kids came and they scared him off.
Standing up, I slowly stretched my muscles and walked over to Rose, curiously glancing at her phone. "Can I see the photo?"
Rose unlocked her phone and showed me her screen, making me chuckle as I saw the monkey curiously looking at me, while I laughed. "As if I'm in love with him."
"Well, I mean isn't everyone?" Rose looked up at me as she was slightly shorter than me, a cheeky smile appearing on her face. My eyes trailed down to her lips almost automatically but I knew it was wrong. They looked so pink and full, so kissable, so natural.
"Hey, dude! Can't you read signs?" We suddenly heard from behind. I woke up from my daydream and looked around me, trying to find out who just said that.
I heard him closer now, "Yeah you. With the beanie on. Take it off. It's a rule."
Glancing at Rose, I noticed that her expression was slowly turning to thunder as she stared at a specific direction. I didn't look, I wasn't feeling like any drama, though, I was sure he was talking to me now.
"It's a rule! Seriously mate-" He pulled off my beanie himself, exposing my bald head to everyone that was looking at us because of his loud voice and the scene he was making. His eyes widened when I turned around, them lingering on my feeding tube, bald head after that, before he stretched out his arm to me, the beanie in his hand.
People cursed, despised him for what he had done but I simply wanted to take the beanie from him and continue walking, though, Rose had different plans.
"Hey, dude, I think it's time to put that beanie on his head yourself." Rose snapped, crossing her arms over her chest while raising her eyebrow at the guy that stood in front of us.
He couldn't swallow his pride, he tried acting cool but I knew he deep down regretted this a lot. "Why? He's got hands himself."
Rose gave him a look out of disbelief, "Seriously? You basically snatched it off his head. Is it so hard to put it back on? You just made yourself look like a prick in front of all these people, do you realise that? Why don't you try and make yourself seem a little more respectful?"
"Rose," I said quietly. "It's okay. My head is getting cold." I joked, trying to enlighten the situation as we gained more and more attention.
She gave the guy a death glare, but it didn't make him do it. He kept looking at her without showing any emotions while I had a feeling, deep down, the situation had made him feel bad but he didn't want to show that towards the friends that stood behind him.
"Asshole." Rose murmured under her breath, snatching the beanie out of his hands. Softly grabbing my wrist, she pulled me away from the people so they wouldn't focus on us anymore. "I'm sorry you have to go through that." She whispered sadly, adjusting the beanie back on my head, over my ears.
"It's fine, Rose. It's whatever." I softly touched her arm as a small gesture, not really knowing how else to let her know I was being genuine.
She gave me a warm, yet sad smile, "I was so close to slapping him. Next time someone does something like that I'll beat them up. Not even kidding." She mumbled, glaring at the guy's direction for one more time.
Warm feelings erupted inside of me, realising she did, somewhat, care about my feelings and not just because I was the patient she needed to look after, today.
Finally getting out of the monkey area, I took a well needed deep breath that filled my lungs with fresh air, the warmth in the monkey area not really helping me.
However, the warm feeling never left my inner body. It was only getting warmer and heavier as I listened to her voice speak about things that didn't even make sense. The sweet sound of it was enough to make me feel some type of way. I watched her eyes light up as she was telling me one of her funny stories about her previous visits to the zoo when she was a little girl, but my eyes focused on the way her lips curled up when she smiled, and God, was she beautiful.
When she was done rambling, we stayed quiet and I looked in front of me, where I saw a couple holding hands. I swallowed. If there was one thing that I wanted right now, then it'd be holding hands with Rose.
I looked at her and I saw that she had noticed the couple too. We both quickly looked away when our eyes met and I bit my cheek on the inside. Was it a sign?
I don't think my mind was thinking at this point, because my muscles suddenly started to move as my hand slowly reached for her hand. I brushed my finger softly over hers, and I gently grabbed her small hand, holding it loosely in mine.
