ten | piano's & coincidences

Rose

I left the small room I just had lunch in and strolled around the department, greeting some patients I saw while walking around. Today was my last workday for the week and how much I hated going to university- I was also a little relieved the first four days were almost done. I could process everything and think it all through and start a new work week on Monday.

Working here went better than I had expected so that was definitely a good thing, but time to process everything wasn't there before.

I walked past a shared sleeping room for kids and I glanced inside. Some were in bed sleeping and other patients were playing with each other. It was nice to see and I wished I could just step inside but I didn't want to be that annoying nosy internship girl. I didn't want to invade their privacy either.

So I kept walking and saw more of those rooms, then the separate rooms which where mostly all closed and if they weren't, family were visiting them.

I continued walking until the sound of a piano stopped me. I heard faint voices, probably singing but the door was closed so I couldn't really hear but the piano was a very bright and warm sound, I could hear it although the door was closed. I couldn't make out a song, but hearing this all made me very curious.

Looking up, I noticed the words 'music room' written on the door. I kept staring at it for a while when I heard a nurse speak to me.

"You can go in if you want to. It's for everyone." She gave me a smile and continued walking. I simply smiled back and slowly opened the door.

Closing it behind me, I looked around me. It wasn't that big, but it was bigger than a regular room for a patient. I saw several guitars hanging on the wall and music instruments for kids to play with. A few kids were playing with them and in a corner there were two older patients drumming with headphones on. In the middle of the room, against the wall, stood a piano and two persons were seated on the same stool. When I saw who was playing the piano I stood still and watched them for a while.

It was Zayn and a little girl. Sarah.

He told me about his music lessons with her. I had to tell him before that she couldn't come because she was at home with her family, but she apparently came back earlier and now they were both playing the same piano. Zayn playing on the left side and Sarah on the right.

"Can we please, please play Olaf's song?" A very sweet voice spoke. I saw Sarah looking up at Zayn like he was the most beautiful looking guy in the world and I wanted to melt. She was wearing a Frozen hat as she was bald and she showed her little teeth while giving him a puppy- eyed look.

Zayn chuckled, "Really? I thought you were over Frozen." He looked back at her. They clearly hadn't picked up on me entering, but I didn't really mind. Curiosity took over as I wanted to listen to them playing the piano, perhaps even singing.

"No silly, Zayn. I want to sing Olaf's song, please?" She practically begged as she pressed her small hands together, her smile even bigger and her barely visible eyebrows pulled up in hope.

"Fine, fine." Zayn laughed and started hitting a few chords before choosing the right one. He cleared his throat and started singing, a deep, melodic voice coming from his mouth.

"Bees will buzz, kids will blow dandelion fuzz and I'll be doing whatever snow does in summer.." Zayn started, his voice resembling Olaf's. Sarah giggled and forgot to play along with him, clutching her stomach with her small hand.

I noticed him laughing but he continued to play the piano, anyway. The moment the part came on where Olaf would sing 'rrr-raht da-dah' Zayn did it the exact same way and Sarah bursted out into an adorable laughter.

Zayn shook his head, "You only wanted me to sing because of that part, huh. I know you, Sarah." He started poking her side and she started laughing even harder, squirming away.

She giggled, "You sound just like Olaf!"

Zayn smiled at her and lifted her up the moment he stood straight. He held her up and pinched her cheek softly. "Well you can do that too. You just always forget to sing along because you're to busy laughing at me."

Sarah rubbed her eyes while still laughing and I could just tell how much she loved him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her small toes on the piano tiles, false, random, chords filling the room.

"Cheeky." Zayn smiled, turned her around and sat down on the stool again, Sarah next to him.

Now, I didn't know if he saw me or that it was pure coincidence, but he whispered something into Sarah's ear and they both started playing 'My heart will go on'.

"Every night in my dreams, I see you, I feel you." Zayn started singing and despite the fact that I wanted to slap him if he did this for me, I couldn't help and listen to the sweet but deep voice he had while singing. I didn't know if he knew, but he really did have a beautiful voice. He just had a bunch of talent, listening to his musical skills and voice.

"Near, far.. wherever you are, I believe that the heart does go on." Zayn sang. I couldn't help but laugh now. I walked over to them and leaned my elbow on the piano while slowly raising my eyebrow as I looked at Zayn.

Zayn looked up at me and chuckled, "Dawson! What a coincidence!"

"Oh, I bet it was." I laughed and removed my elbow from the piano.

Zayn faked a frown, "What, you don't believe me? I just think it's a very beautiful song. Not my fault." He shrugged but fist- bumped the little Sarah who was giggling again.

"Whatever." I rolled my eyes but laughed. Sarah climbed off the stool and walked over to me.

I watched her and saw how her eyes were bright blue. She stretched out her hand and I shook it. "Hi I'm Sarah. I'm five years old and I have cancer just like Zayn. But mummy says I have my last chemo soon and the doctor says I might get better but he says I don't tell the other patients because maybe it makes them sad that they don't get better." The kid rambled on and I couldn't help but smile.

Five years old and already talking like that, that promised something for the future.

I smiled at her, "Hello Sarah. I'm Rose. I'm.. a new nurse here." I looked up at Zayn and gave him a 'I don't know what else to call it' look.

He gave me a warm smile and shrugged a little, letting me know it was just fine.

"Are you from a movie?" Sarah smiled cheekily and I frowned a little, not really understand where the question came from.

"I wish I was. But no, why?" I asked her. I saw Zayn shaking his head at her, his eyes big and I suddenly understood why.

Sarah frowned, "Zayn, you said-"

"I said she had the same name as someone in a movie. Not that she was the girl in the movie." Zayn chuckled and softly nudged her small shoulder.

Sarah giggled, "Oh, oh. Busted."

I covered my mouth and started laughing again. She was way too sassy for her age and that made me understand why Zayn liked her as much as she liked him.

Zayn gulped and started laughing as well, the three of us looking up when the door opened and a nurse started clapping her hands.

"Dinner time for the kids." She said. The kids didn't hesitate one bit and all rushed their ways towards the woman.

Sarah pouted and hugged Zayn. "Mummy said that after dinner I need to go to bed. Bye, Zayn!"

"Bye Sarah. See you around." Zayn gave her a hug back and I simply waved at her as she started walking away towards the woman. It took a few minutes before all the kids were gathered around the woman and then she could finally leave.

She closed the door and the older patients started playing some music again. Zayn was staring at me and when I looked back at him he looked down and at the piano, a smile definitely visible on his face .

I coughed, "So.. coincidence, right?"

Zayn chuckled, "That girl has such an attitude. It's unbelievable. She's definitely going to make it." He shook his head and closed the piano book.

"I can tell." I smiled when I thought about her. When I looked at Zayn I started thinking about his voice and I had to compliment him for that. "You've got such a beautiful sound. When you're singing."

Zayn smiled, "Oh.. thanks."

I shrugged, "The truth. Did you get singing lessons?"

Zayn patted on the spot Sarah sat on before and I walked over to sit down next to him. He looked at me and shook his head. "No it's just.. my natural voice if you call it like that."

"Yeah." I smiled and stared at my nude colored painted nails, being aware of the closeness between us.

"I used to play in musicals though, but I was still so little I didn't learn a lot from it." He chuckled, shaking his head at the memories.

I looked at him, "Really? That's cool. I had always wanted to play in musicals and such but I'm just not made for it I guess." I shook my head and pressed on a tile on the piano, hitting a false one to which both me and Zayn cringed, exchanging chuckles.

"I don't think that's true. Maybe you just had to practice a little harder." Zayn smiled at me while playing with his fingers.

"Probably." I ran my fingers through my hair, "But having two older brothers who were always making fun of you didn't really boost my confidence."

Zayn sighed softly, "Tell me about it. My sister always used to tell me how girly it was to sing and stuff." He chuckled and shook his head.

"Oh aren't sisters just lovely. I wish I had one, though." It was true. Growing up with two older brothers was fun, but I really did miss a sister. Just to share things with, a friend that would stay a lifetime.

"You can have one if I can have a brother. I've got three sisters." Zayn looked at me and I glanced back, noticing a small freckle at the side of his iris in his right eye, thinking that was such a pretty detail.

For a moment I forgot what we were talking about, the freckle had captivated me. I looked away and thought about it for a while. "Oh, sure." I laughed. "Poor you."

"It's almost the same as you and besides, I'm used to it so it's whatever. I love them." Zayn stood up and stretched his arms. "Anyway, I'm going to get some dinner before it's too late."

"Yeah, sure. See you next week I guess." I gave him a smile but he frowned.

"Why next week? I'm here the whole weekend and tomorrow too." Zayn told me, shrugging. "I won't be leaving the hospital anytime soon."

Standing up as well, I straightened the white, uniform trousers and glanced at him. "Yeah but on Friday I go to Uni and my next internship day is on Monday again so.. I won't be here tomorrow and the weekend." I explained him.

The moment those words left my mouth I could swear his expression changed to a slight disappointment. He smiled anyway, "Oh I see. Well.. good luck then."

"Thanks." I smiled back. "Bye Zayn."

"Goodbye, Dawson."
