Rose

I was lucky that I had a late work shift today, meaning I could sleep in. I really needed that as yesterday night was such a mess with me and my feelings, being around my brothers at the time I should've been asleep.

I had slept for nine hours straight, not waking up for even one time. I still felt a little tired, but a lot better than yesterday. I had thought about Thomas' words and I again knew he was right. I wasn't going to admit my feelings today, but if the time was right for it.. I maybe would.

I was a little nervous to see him today because of all the admitted feelings, but I pushed all of the thoughts aside and decided to have a fresh start today. I was going to be professional and act the way towards him we had always done since the first day.

I got out of my car and entered the huge hospital, quickly pushing myself inside of the elevator as it was almost closing and there were many people in it. I gave them an apologetic smile as some of the people were looking at me in annoyance and I sighed in relief when a few people left when we arrived at the first floor.

When we arrived at my department I stepped out and walked over to Caroline's small office, which I could use as well. I always had to read the shift reports first before I could start working. It was necessary but also easy. You'd know if something had happened with any specific patient or if there were particularities we needed to give attention to.

I started up the computer and hung up my coat and bag, sitting down on the chair after that. I opened the program we used for electronic patients files. Clicking on my thirty patients, I noticed that someone had edited the file of Zayn, meaning something either had happened to him today, or someone added the results of the scans in it.

I pressed on it and started reading. I was curious, and I was allowed to, so I opened his file and started reading the shift report from this morning.

The first impression I had this morning was that Zayn is doing much better. He was still asleep when I entered his room, but once he woke up and saw me he smiled instantly, something he hasn't done the past few days.

He told me he had slept for hours and that he felt better. He wanted to get out of bed and I helped him with it because it took him a long time to find his balance as he hadn't been out of bed in days. After that he went to the toilet himself and took a shower on his own where he wouldn't stop singing. He ate some soup for lunch and told me he wanted it for dinner too, preferably chicken soup.

I smiled by myself. He was doing much better, I could tell. He barely talked the past few days and now he was singing in the shower and ate soup. It was a really good sign. I felt more relieved after reading this. There was written more, so I continued reading.

His temperature was 37,5 last time I checked. His wound is still slightly open but I already cleaned it for today. I also took out the tube feeding, and placed it in his other nostril (it went well after he threw up two times) due to an irritation on his cheek because of the band aid.

Attention points:
- Irritation on his left cheek. He tends to itch it, but he's not allowed to. He puts ointment on it himself. ( triamcinolone vaseline cetomacrogol cream)
- His open wound due to the radiation. (It's cleaned already but check on it!)
- He wants chicken soup ;)

I sighed a little. I felt bad for him that Caroline had to take out his tube feeding and bring it in again but in his other nostril. When I did it he threw up as well, which was so obvious for me. Something went down your nose and throat, that's never a good feeling. I just hoped it didn't ruin his mood.

At least his fever was finally gone. He had been caught up with it for days, now he could finally rest for real. He needed it.

I smiled satisfied while closing the program and switching off the computer. I knew what I could expect now, and it would hurt so much less to see him being better. It always gave me so much.. hope. Hope that he really was going to get through this sickness, no matter how long it still was going to take.

I left the small office and met the nurse I would be working with today, the one Zayn thought was sweet. She would be with the kids today and I'd be with the eighteen plus patients, like always.

"Good afternoon, Rose! Do you also have a shift until eleven pm?" She asked me, stuffing the bags of medication in my hands which I had to hand out to the patients.

I smiled at her, "Yeah, I do. It's weird starting at three pm. I usually work a day shift."

"I can imagine that. Well, we're really glad you're able to work flexible times." She gave me a warm smile then pointed at the kids, "I have to give them some medication. You have given your patients their medication before, right? You understand how it works?"

"Yeah, I do." I opened the bigger bag to find all 30 smaller bags full of pills for every patient.

"Good, good! I'll see you around." She then left and I chuckled slightly. She was really hyper but she was sweet.

I took out the first small bag for the first patient and walked over to the man's room. I knocked on the door and opened it when I got an answer. "I've got your medication."

I handed it to him and he gave me a smile, "Thank you, young lady."

I didn't really know how to react to that so I just smiled and left his room. I went on and on giving everyone their medication but I skipped number 28. I wanted to do the two last rooms first, then Zayns so I could stay a little longer with him.

When I was finally done with everyone except Zayn, I knocked on his door but I weirdly enough didn't get a reaction. I knocked again and stared down at the floor, hoping he'd react now but he again didn't.

I frowned but slowly and quietly opened the door. I sighed in relief. There he was, sitting at the table with a pencil in his hand and headphones on. He ticked the pencil on the table to the beat of his music while his head was bobbing back and forth. He added his foot and empty hand to the beat and slowly hummed along with the song he was listening to.

I smiled at the view and kept staring at him for a while. He was beautiful.

I walked over to him and just then I noticed that he had one rosy colored cheek, and one flaming red colored one. For some weird reasons I thought he looked cute with the red cheek, even though it was irritated skin.

I rolled my eyes at myself and cleared my throat, slowly waving my hand in front of his face. "Zayn?"

He dropped the pencil and looked up at me with widened eyes then sighed in relief and took off his headphones, hanging them around his neck. "Rose," He breathed out then smiled shyly, "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you coming in."

I smiled softly. It wasn't the first time that I accidentally scared him, and I really didn't mean to. "Don't worry about it. What are you doing?" I peeked on the sheet of paper in front of him and just when I realized he drew a few roses, he snatched the paper away.

"Oh uhm.. just drawing and listening to music and stuff." I could've sworn he was blushing. "I didn't expect you today. You weren't here in the morning."

I shook my head, trying to ignore what I just saw. Did he really draw roses? Did it have anything to do with me? "I have a shift from three until eleven pm today."

"Oh, I see. That's cool." He smiled sweetly.

"Yeah. So you're feeling better." I returned the smile and he nodded, pausing his music and taking off his headphones completely.

"Luckily, yeah." He looked down while smiling and slowly played with his fingers. He seemed a little shy, but I didn't really understand why. He was usually never shy with me.

He seemed to notice it as well. He pulled a face at himself, cleared his throat and spoke up, "Do you want to play a game? I'm a little bored."

"Yeah sure, why not." I pulled a chair out and sat down, watching him as he grabbed his phone and started up an app.

"It's 30 seconds, do you know the game?" He looked up at me and showed me his phone screen.

I smiled then nodded, "Yeah I do. My brothers are always so aggressive when I don't know one of the answers." I chuckled, making Zayn laugh.

"I know what you mean. We're only with the two of us though.. I bought it on the App store but I never got to play it because I don't have people to play it with." He said, itching his head from underneath his beanie.

I nodded slowly, "I get that.. can we play it with just the two of us though?"

"I think we can. We just need to be honest and play fair if we want to do it together, okay?" He laid his phone on the table in between us.

I nodded again, "Okay."

"Promise Rose Dawson?" He narrowed his eyes, trying to look serious and threatening. I thought it was adorable.

I did the same, returning the look he was giving me, "Oh I sure do, but do you, Mr Malik?" I slowly raised my eyebrow, causing Zayn to laugh and showing me his perfect white teeth.

"I promise." He stretched his hand out to me and I shook it, making clear that we were going to play this game very honestly.

He smiled cheekily and grabbed his phone, pressing on start and seeing the five words he had to describe to me. "Uh.. oh! Of course, duh. You can watch movies or series on it, everyone has it nowadays except me."

"Netflix?"

Zayn faked an angry expression, grumbling a "Yes." as he obviously didn't want me to have it right, it'd mean I got points.

I cheered and he chuckled. "It's a singer? Yeah, a lot of girls are fan of him. He has brown curly hair."

"Harry Styles."

Zayn groaned, "Yes, uhm, it's a country."

I rolled my eyes, "There are so many countries in this world! More specific, please." I started to bounce my leg up and down because of the nerves and Zayn glanced at the time then quickly described more.

"Pizza, sunny, best ice cream, warm, beautiful." He shrugged, pulling a face at himself as he didn't know more words.

"Italy!"

Zayn sighed dramatically. "You're smart. Okay next one.." He read the other word and suddenly started laughing so hard that I was scared he was hallucinating again or something.

"What?!" I said, trying to look at his phone screen.

He calmed down and rubbed his eye, "Okay, okay, the woman who sang the title song in Titanic."

I gave him a look. "Seriously? I'm not going to answer that."

Zayn's eyes widened, "Rose! The time is ticking I swear it's a word! Hurry up!" He smacked the table with his hand to let me know he was being for real.

For a moment I didn't know if I had to believe him but I decided to play along anyway, "Kate Winslet."

Zayn gave me a look, "Are you serious? That's Rose! The woman who sang the title song! Come on, Rose!" He yelled giving me a total black out and I frowned as I didn't know why it was wrong.

"What? Who? I said Kate!"

"Time's up." Zayn grinned, then sighed a little and looked at me. "But seriously.. Kate? It's Celine Dion." He shook his head, pretending to be extremely disappointed in me.

I chuckled, "Oops? Show me. I want to see if it really was a word in your list."

He showed me his phone and it indeed had the Titanic word in it. "Told you. I wouldn't lie to you, Rose." He smiled, cheeky yet sweet.

"Whatever." I laughed, grabbing his phone because now it was my turn.
